"Dave Chappelle: The Closer"
Tue Oct-05-21 11:05 AM by Boogie Stimuli

What do the people of OKP think of this final chapter of the Chappelle Netflix specials?

I thought the final story about his friend was rather touching.

Not the funniest special imo, but it had its moments here and there.

Dove's more of a story teller than comedian now but thats not a bad thing at all IMHO. The last story was definitely touching! But I foresee people possibly comparing it to prejudice white people who point to their one black friend that defends them.

Some people watch things with the intention of finding something to fault. Some are doing it on purpose. Some are doing it subconsciously. Regardless, I can’t imagine doing that with my time.

That written, this was a great ending for me if he doesn’t do anymore. I watch wrestling and love hiphop so I don’t buy ‘this is my last one for a while’ type talk until you look up and it’s been 20 years since Stankonia. Anyway, the last 15 minutes was especially human and best case scenario Dave storytelling. Sadly, I’m not confident that it will be seen that way since trying to make everything polarizing is big business on earth in 2021. So the thinkpieces and hitman tweets will flow. And nothing will ever be good enough if the mad about everything portion of our population don’t want it to be. And maybe it wasn’t perfect. But I enjoyed it…especially the last 15 minutes. I took it as an excellent close and a powerful tribute to someone who isn’t here anymore.

his self-righteous mouth did that

its sad seeing someone as smart as Dave buy into that boogeyman bullshit

lets be clear,
Kevin Hart tripped over himself doubling down on his ignorance, then deployed the cheapest apology kit he could find and mass produced it, you know, because his ‘team’ is so goddamn smart

never once did he think to educate himself on LGBTQ issues

not one dime did he dedicate to educating others on the same ignorance he suffers from

it was disappointing seeing Dave use such a big platform to perpetuate such a trash myth

i told a story about CK doing an imitation of a mentally challenged character for his daughter and the punchline was the character was a Black man and the crowd groaned…

and then he mailed the rest of his set in.

Now I do remember you recommending a comedy special with a white dude who said nigger 10 minutes into his set and none of it was funny.

But like kayru99 said below, progressive liberal Black folks on here always end up defending white people at the end of the day.

44. "Nearly half of trans women will be the victim of a hate crime."
In response to Reply # 18

That's in an old study from all the way back in... June 2021.

The violent death toll of transgender people grows annually.

90% of trans people reported workplace harassment.

More than half of trans men will attempt suicide in their lives. 30% of trans women will attempt suicide.

LGBT people, and especially trans people, are disproportionately affected by homelessness.

Trans people are disproportionately more likely to have HIV.

I could go on... but, like, I think it's pretty obvious that an inability to take jokes is not what's preventing trans people from being treated equally. It's the insane discrimination that comes from people not making even the most basic attempt to empathize. And a lot of that lack of empathy comes from people who simply don't understand. And jokes like the ones Dave tells encourages people to continue to not understand.

Dave joking about trans people because people tell him not to... is like Kyrie refusing the vaccine because people tell him to get it: it's more important for him to feel correct than it is for him to see the facts, empathize with the world around him, and understand how his actions can negatively affect and influence others.

(Yes, I'm a teacher who's had multiple trans students and seen what they've gone through, so maybe this is a bit personal for me, admittedly. But I also think people generally just *do not understand* how at-risk trans lives are. The statistics are beyond staggering.)

Goddammit. This wasn't meant to target the above poster, and I regret framing the above post as if it was exclusively him defending Dave's material here-- especially since he said he hadn't even seen the special. I got off track a little, and I'm mad at myself for ranting about this topic (especially here, where a lot of people probably just have their minds made up, and it's unlikely to make much impact). But Chappelle's one of my all-time heroes, and it just really, really, really, REALLY sucks to see him take this path. It's fucking heartbreaking. So I left out a really important thing that's worth clarifying in my post--

No one's telling Dave he can't make jokes about trans people. He's on his sixth Netflix special and he's hosted SNL multiple times in the past couple years, so clearly no one's telling Dave he can't make jokes about *anything,* but this idea that people are trying to "silence" him when he tells shitty jokes is... pretty transparently wrong. He can joke about whatever he wants. And people can call it out when it's damaging and/or hateful. That's how it works.

If his jokes on this issue had insight or variety, that'd be one thing, because I'd defend any comedian (especially a hero of mine) trying to craft good material on any subject matter. But when his jokes mostly revolve around "they're not real women! they're dudes!" and they have been that way for a while? Then clearly he's not really attempting to do anything other than double down. And the tone of it is just soooo defensive.

There's a pretty good rule of thumb that applies across the board. The moment any comic starts doing material that involves them saying, in a naughty boy tone, "What's wrong? have I *offended* you??" or some variation of that? Then yeah, in general, they've fallen off. Dave's presence and timing and what have you are still absolutely elite. But that trans material is just really lazy and has been for a while now. And he'd rather do an entire defensive special than admit that he may have said some things that were more hurtful and out-of-touch than they were funny.

Anyway. Sorry. This is one of those issues that just sets me off. Probably shouldn't post about it online, not much good will come from it. Hope everyone is well and thinks empathetically about trans people this week.

Haven't seen this special yet, but from the reactions I gather he hasn't evolved from the stuff that I did see and that made me roll my eyes. Feels like he's refusing to evolve through critical introspection and is slowly going the John Cleese route instead. It's such a shame because it casts a shadow on the excellent stuff he's given/giving the world.

https://publicintegrity.org/politics/black-americans-still-are-victims-of-hate-crimes-more-than-any-other-group/

So why don’t the (white) social justice warriors go to bat as fervently for them as they do anti-lgbtq? (in general, not you specifically) It’s clearly his point for 2+ specials now (caitlyn/cassius etc..I know you’ve seen them too).

To me, this is almost like dave’s “the aristocrats!”-asized version of patrice’s more concise “missing women” hypocrisy bit..do the transphobic jokes go too hard? Yes, but i also believe its the only way to truly drive his point home.

their LGBTQ views.

I have, however, cut out large swaths of people for their views on Black people and Black issues- and there were countless impassioned conversations leading up to that point.

You could say that the fact that I had so many such people in my bubble was/is a reflection on me, and that's fair, though it was just as much a reflection of my actual physical location and proximity, as it was anything else. But I digress.

I have those conversations less often now, because I just wound up pruning those people from my life nearly entirely. But I routinely have these discussions with my wife, family, and friends, as well as others online. Though, even that comes with some limits; my Black friends and family don't really need me going hard at every issue, because they deal with it day in, and day out, and don't exactly want to hear about it more than they already do. But yes, we have those discussions.

OKP really isn't a place for me to go HAM on the subject of Black issues, because this is a place where I largely need to listen more than speak, due to the high concentration of Black people here.

That isn't to say that this take isn't valid overall, or that I don't falter along the way, or that I'm somehow the exception to the rule. I'm just saying, I make plenty of passionate defenses of Black people and Black issues with non-Black people.

I can't recall disowning people for LGBTQ views, but that's largely because that subject hasn't really come up a lot until recent years.

And by that time, I had largely disowned most of the people who would have problematic views on LGBTQ issues for their problematic views on Black issues.

I don't know whether or not I pass any of Dave's (or anyone else's) metrics for what would qualify as a quality "ally"- a term I don't really care for, because I'm so deeply entrenched and invested, but it's also not my direct, 1st person, lived experience either. But again, I digress.

I suspect that it's not so dissimilar with the LGTBQ community, in any event. Because, even for the well-meaning and intended, for every impassioned argument and defense, I'm probably saying or doing something, somewhere along the line, that either doesn't quite nail it, or is detrimental to some degree.

considering your wife/ex-wife (don't know your current situation) is Black and therefore your children are at least half Black as well?

That is to say, you have a vested interest in defending Black people and cutting folks off for their anti-Black views.

Could that answer the "why" in RagOnMe's post as it pertains to you?

I've discussed it here before, so I have no problem putting it out there. I just figured that was more or less known by most people who interact with me here.

Also, I did say this, at the bottom of my post:

"I don't know whether or not I pass any of Dave's (or anyone else's) metrics for what would qualify as a quality "ally"- a term I don't really care for, because I'm so deeply entrenched and invested, but it's also not my direct, 1st person, lived experience either."

So I definitely didn't leave it out, I just didn't say it overtly. Because again, people here know that about me.

>That is to say, you have a vested interest in defending Black
>people and cutting folks off for their anti-Black views.

Certainly.

>Could that answer the "why" in RagOnMe's post as it pertains
>to you?

Not in my case, unless I misunderstand your question relative to Ragonme's. I've always had close proximity, just not to that degree.

Yes, it's the old "some of my best friends are Black", but it's still true. The woman who was my biggest rock throguhout my teenage and young adult years, was a Black woman, and her children are more or less my siblings. I've posted about my relationship with her son on here, in fact, though I don't know that I ever said "oh yeah fyi he's Black". It's not just that family, but that's the best example.

Still, I can't deny the larger impact and perspective marrying a Black woman and having Black children hasBut I think I would have reached this point without that happening, because I already had a foot out of that bubble by the time I even met my wife.

And I was having those conversations with those people when I still thought of them as friends and family, because my naivete led me to believe I could be a voice of reason.

I was wrong. And far less educated than I am now. But I'm confident that I'd still have wound up chucking those deuces to those sample people, for the same reasons, at some point. Maybe even sooner, because a significant catalyst was me leaving the church. How and why that is, is another discussion, which i'm perfectly happy to have if you're curious about the correlation.

But, to answer your question in a broader context, certainly.

Proximity can change a lot of things. So, I'm sure there are plenty of white liberals with little or minimal proximity to Black people, who just aren't as passionate about that, because it doesn't effect them.

And I don't mean to minimize that, if that's how I came across.

Mainly, I'm speaking from within my personal bubble, since the question does apply to me, and I do know people who are just as loud and fervent on the issue of racism as they are anti-lgbtq sentiments.

And for me, I rarely occupy spaces where that's even necessary now.

i.e. bringing up the RL plight of trans people and allat like transphobes doing the bullshit really tuning in to Dave Chappelle like that

kill the virtue signaling and all of that, making it more than what it is.

the problem with Dave going there is two fold:

1) he sounds obsessed about the topic, to the point of being cynical so that he can easily get the attention. See also: Lil Boosie talking about the gays.

2) it isn't funny. like he tells no actual jokes. this is a man who told the funniest "kick em in the pussy" joke ever. he can't get one good joke out on this topic after about 4 attempts.

there's a way to be a crank and actually be funny about it. if you're going to do Archie Bunker '21 while Black, part of that joke is that you have to really make yourself look like a dumbass, but that clashes with the whole "Chappelle" motif in the first place.

move on from this topic, Dave. "We Get It, You Don't Understand Trans People".

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Niggas will go back 8 years and pull up a bad tweet from somebody before they were famous and run them through the ringer.

But Da Baby, even though he did kill somebody in self defense, nobody went back and brought that up once?

Them niggas that made Who I Smoke are doing fine.

YNW Melly was doing great up until he got charged with double murder.

Are they though? Spinnabenz, Foolio and other rappers in that realm have lost bookings/missed money making opportunities based on the controversy surrounding them

DaBaby shooting someone at Walmart wasn't exactly some dark secret, it was well known and he would talk about it openly in songs/interviews, if anything it probably helped his reputation and rap career

Because the last 4 specials make the dude seem reactionary to me.

I'll say it again:
Then: Dave was actively, maliciously, and falsely accused of everything under the sun when The Chappelle Show was on. He was intentionally harmed and there were people in bad faith actually trying to destroy him.

Now: He just doesn't like people telling him not to joke about gays - or telling him to STFU when he says "Give Trump a chance." Most of those criticisms are not in bad faith, and they are not trying to destroy him personally on the whole.

But I don't think he can tell the difference anymore.

And that's COMPLETELY understandable. I know me, personally, would not be able to do it. Dick Gregory was absolutely destroyed too.

Once an actual conspiracy targets you and does damage you'll likely see conspiracies EVERYWHERE. Again, I would crumble. And many people have.

So Dave's rich, has millions of SUPER FANS, and can't NOT complain about gay people on Netflix - a service I think is bad.

there are so very few quotes in this post because on paper the material is offensive. which leads me to believe people are laughing because of who said it, not because the material was good

doing an hour of tasteless material and ending with a tribute to a trans woman is the same as a white guy doing an hour of racist material and going "but in all seriousness I befriended a black guy who killed himself, he was a great man"

Netflix is shameless too, they care about revenue more than who his content harms

The obsession with joking about LGBTQ, in particular about trans people, has gone from lazy to simply bizarre. Dude is a brilliant comic and can find a billion ways to have interesting things to say about society, yet he *keeps* choosing to go back to the same tired well. It's been his weakest material for multiple specials now, and he keeps leaning harder and harder into it.

And a new children's book she just released. She's one of the least silenced people in the world.

Rich people always defend other rich people's rights to say whatever they want without incurring any public criticism. It's baffling.

I made an observation that he's being reactive to his criticism on this issue.. which he specifically talks about in the special.. and i do think he's overly locked on it. i'm not saying he's "being silenced" but the notion that no one is telling him shit is false.

from right-wing folks with this last couple of specials based off his LGBT views. Assuming that's the case, pretty odd to see Chappelle get support from the crowd, but here we are I suppose. Also pretty odd how roughly 2/3rds of this special was devoted to that subject, but I guess that's what been on Dave's mind for these last couple of years for what ever reasons.

In response to Reply # 0

the trans community when there's such a fundamental disagreement. Anytime you talk to a trans woman, they'll say they've always been women from birth and that their body just didn't match the inside. "Sex is between the legs & gender is between the ears" they say (I think I'm saying that right). So when Dave says he's done telling jokes about the lgbt community until he's sure they're laughing together, that's one of the most obvious reasons yall aren't.

Also, while the story about his trans friend was quite touching, I have to ask myself if HE wonders whether or not his insistence on referring to trans women as men had some impact on her. Granted, there are people like Flame Monroe who don't give a damn what you call them because they identify as both on occasion, but idk much about his friend. I think you have to be careful when you're such a widely admired person, because it's possible that people will deal with less-than-favorable treatment to be close to you. I mean, THE Dave Chappelle let her open for him, so maybe she wasn't going to say "hey Dave, it's really offensive when you call us men" for fear of getting kicked off the show. And that kind of thing will eat at a person, make them depressed... suicidal, even... to think "here I am on the biggest stage I ever imagined, and it's given to me by my famous 'friend' who doesn't fully acknowledge me. Is this the best the world has to offer me?" If he had been able to think of that and address it here in the special, that would've been a real thoughtful and vulnerable moment. He recalls her singing his praise about not punching up or down, referring to him as her friend. I wonder if it's hard to for him to imagine that maybe she was seeing the best in him and loving him the way she wished her would love and see the best in her. Chappelle expressing these kinds of considerations probably would've done a lot of good for a lot of people

Cool. This is no different from the "I have a black friend, and HE said...." retorts people give when addressing their interactions with the community on the whole.

Because Dave's stance is, essentially, if you were born with a dick, you're still not a woman, not really, because gender is a fact.

And he's just plain fucking wrong. It's a social construct.

And "not forgetting that she's human" is one thing. That's what she's saying to him. That's their dynamic.

Thing is, it's dehumanizing to deny her- and every other member of her community- her gender identity.

The rest of his story about her does nothing to fix that problem.

where he tells the story of being on stage while she was in the audience. They were having a back-and-forth dialog, and then he tell her that he loves her but doesn't understand what she's saying. She then responds with "I don't need you to understand me. I just need you to believe that I'm having a human experience." Personally, I don't see why that's a mindblowing or light bulb moment. She's a human being. What else would she be having? Furthermore, he went on to say he believed her because she didn't say anything about pronouns or about him being in trouble. If she'd said something about him being in trouble, would he have been to defensive to see her humanity? That might be the part of this whole thing that can be squarely blamed on him. And if pronouns would shake his belief in her humanity, maybe he still isn't totally seeing her. I get that he's saying a person's humanity matters more than anything else, but a person's desires, boundaries, wishes, etc all matter as well. People are mistreated, devalued, and silenced every day by people who understand that they are humans. But I mean... if he helped somebody see that trans humans are human, that's a good thing no matter how troubling it may be that they couldn't see it in the first place. There's just more to respecting a person than understanding that they're human.

>they had a conversation on what she wanted to be called. she
>said, it wasn’t as important as not forgetting she’s
>human. or something like that, lol

I don’t view it from that lens. at this point in my life, it’s makes better sense to meet people where their at. it’s not on me to say if it’s right or wrong. that’s how I free myself….

regarding the lightbulb moment…however misquoted, it was the moment that I felt like i understood his point. my assessment of it is in my original reply to this post…

The story about his friend at the end was actually touching, I get the impression I believe his heart is in the right place but yeesh.

Odd that he KEEPS devoting so much time to LGBTQ people every special and just going out of his way to try purposely make people mad and then complaining about the result

Dude disagrees with some view points of the lgbtqia community. And? What hatred was he spewing? You can disagree and still not hate a whole community.

- Is he an advocate for laws that target the lgbtqia community making it harder for them to vote in the name of voter fraud? We are literally watching the rights of Black people being stripped away right in front of our eyes and it is just......**shoulder shrugs**

- Is he advocating for pushing out the lgbtqia community via gentrification since the lgbtqia community has a history of being redlined and faced economic and environmental racism making it damn near impossible to obtain generational wealth?

- Has he made light of any deaths of any members of the lgbtqia community? Because from what I've seen, he made a whole special on a death that deeply effected him.

- Has he weaponized the police against any members of the lgbtqia community? Unfortunately, members of the lgbtqia community has weaponized the police against Black folk. Some of your 'Karens' are part of the lgbtqia (.....as well as feminist) community.

No?

Oh wait....his definition of what a man/woman is, is different from theirs? That equals hate and cancellation?

very true but it's aight though.

We should be able to have conversations of opposing view points without skipping steps and going straight to phobia/Nazi-ism/whatever.

Yes Dave is poking the bear...a lot....and I see it for what it is. And it is working.

People reacting without watching the special. People not even addressing what Dave was trying to say or offering any opposing viewpoints. They can't even sum up his special. just cherry picking.

It is all name calling and insults.

If you can be physiologically Caucasian, Asian, African or even deaf/blind....then why can't you physiologically be male or female?

You just ranted against a host of imagined objections that exist largely in your head.

Now you're mystified as to what the actual issue is.

So no, you're not even trying to listen to the objections people actually have, even as you made a long, impassioned argument against objections that aren't being raised.

Do you hear yourself?

If you did, then you would've realized I made the points he made in the special. And what I am saying is no one is really addressing the full scope of what he said. Just cherry picking and reacting. Some of his arguments are based in logic; he is not the monster that the media like to paint Black men. He may be wrong, but he is not a monster; there's a difference.
See.....'yourself' and think for a change and stop reacting.

Kevin Hart tries to be as PG as any top comic and people love to scream about how "not funny" he is and they dug up 10 year-old tweets to try to sink him.

which is why its funny to see people always prop carlin up as the patron saint of the anti cancel culture movement (not you just people in general). like did anyone actually go look at his own words? its like when conservatives use their bastardized version of mlk to criticize modern day protests for racial/economic equality.

its pretty interesting that daves act has essentially evolved from freeform/abstract to just a more high brow version of what andrew dice clay was doing in the 90s (what carlin was speaking on).

Carlin is talking about LANGUAGE.

>how would any of this go over now?
Here he's talking about LANGUAGE. He never says "cripples seem weird to me" and he didn't spend segments on 5 different show on cripples, or lookism, or saying that "slow" children are weird.

He was MUCH kinder than Dave is being.

Remember there are 3 version of older Carlin on stage.
1)George Carlin - The real man - who was a little cranky about language, but over-all warm.
2)"George Carlin" - The crank character who ranted and was a little meaner.
3)Depressed George Carlin - After his wife died Georg 1 and 2 combined, with #2 taking over the dominant personality and jettisoning the warmth almost entirely.

For me Carlin lost a BIG STEP and a lot of his humanity after his wife died, and by the mid 2000s he was PURE nihilist on stage.

But in ALL of it I didn't see him as targeting a group as relentless as Dave has --especially one that was not a the status quo/in charge.

I asked how would this go over today. You think people would stop and try to understand his larger point about language?

Especially if he's leading with phrases like "the PC liberal language police"... etc.. Or talking about the dangers of what happens when well intended liberals get together with an agenda

How about his n-bomb bit. Would his overall point give him a pass to say it in 2021?

I never compared Carlin talking about Disabled people to Dave talking about Trans people. You're responding to something I didn't say

though it probably wouldn't matter. I'm not sure why his clip on punching down is treated as gospel on twitter, vs so many things he's said that MOST people on either side wouldn't differentiate from something Jordan Peterson would say

Cancel culture is threatening to shut down Dave Chappelle’s “The Closer.”

The always outspoken standup comic is pushing the public’s buttons again — and a swelling wave of culture critics and activist organizations are calling for his brand-new Netflix special to be yanked from the streaming giant’s catalog.

The special — the sixth and final in the Emmy winner’s big-bucks deal with Netflix — premiered Tuesday, and immediately stoked the flames of controversy with incendiary jokes about transgender women.

Chappelle, 48, is also being accused of defending what many perceived to be problematic comments by rapper DaBaby and “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, as well as deflecting criticism he faced for cracking wise about the trans community in previous specials “Equanimity” and “Sticks & Stones.”

In “The Closer,” Chappelle declares that he’s joining Rowling in “Team TERF!” (the acronym for trans-exclusionary radical feminist), and conflated rapper DaBaby’s homophobic statements at a show over the summer with systemic racism.

Dave Chappelle's "The Closer” premiered Tuesday on Netflix. It’s his final standup special for the streaming network.
Dave Chappelle’s “The Closer” premiered Tuesday on Netflix. When confronted by paparazzi asking for comment about backlash, he ignored them, muttering: “Dumb-ass questions.”
Mathieu Bitton
“In our country, you can shoot and kill a — but you better not hurt a gay person’s feelings,” Chappelle says onstage, referencing a 2018 shooting incident involving the rapper at a Walmart in North Carolina. The 19-year-old victim later died.

The brewing backlash is ample — but perhaps most shocking is the reaction from one of Netflix’s own: Jaclyn Moore, executive producer and showrunner of the streaming giant’s “Dear White People.”

Moore bluntly declared her self “done” with Netflix.

“I love so many of the people I’ve worked with at Netflix,” she shared on Twitter after detailing her own transition in a passionate post. “Brilliant people and executives who have been collaborative and fought for important art,” Moore continued. “ I will not work with them as long as they continue to put out and profit from blatantly and dangerously transphobic content.”

“Chappelle’s brand has become synonymous with ridiculing trans people and other marginalized communities.”
GLAAD, in a statement about “The Closer”
Meanwhile, the National Black Justice Coalition, a civil rights advocacy group focused on the LGBTQ+ community, goes so far as to prod Netflix to pull “The Closer” from its menu.

“With 2021 on track to be the deadliest year on record for transgender people in the United States — the majority of whom are Black transgender people — Netflix should know better,” NBJC executive director David Johns said in a statement to Deadline. “Perpetuating transphobia perpetuates violence. Netflix should immediately pull ‘The Closer’ from its platform and directly apologize to the transgender community.”

LGBTQ+ advocacy leaders at GLAAD also called out the acclaimed comic’s pattern of degrading jokes, declaring: “Chappelle’s brand has become synonymous with ridiculing trans people and other marginalized communities.”

“Oh, I’m jealous. I’m not the only black person that feels this way. We look at the gay community, we go, ‘Goddamn it — look at how well that movement is going! Look at how well you are doing.’ And we’ve been trapped in this predicament for hundreds of years. How the f–k are you making that kind of progress?”

However, Chappelle goes on to claim there’s a big difference between the “old-school gangsta gays” who fought for change during the Stonewall era.

“I’m not that fond of these newer gays. Too sensitive. Too brittle. Those aren’t the gays I grew up with … They fought for their freedom. I respect that s–t.”

Nice usage of storytelling to address the race/class entitlements in the white LBGTQ movement

How did people not get this when watching the special? I didn't think he was funny but I thought he did a great job expressing his point of view as well as pointing out the hypocrisy of a movement that is doing a lot of the cancelling.
It's a great opportunity for dialogue, discussion, and clarity but way too many are in their feelings and over reacting.

in that category. Dave is the type that hangs with everyone. Who knows why? Who cares?

So you think Dave is trending, and this post is mad deep, because of how funny his Netflix special is? Or is it because he brought up something those, in a particular community, may not like?

Where ever there is white people there is entitlement and privilege. Doesn't matter whether left or right wing. The lgbtqia pretends to be all inclusive. But the same way white feminists could give a damn about Black women, it is the same for that community as well....so enough of the bullshit.

Dave Chappelle Backed by Family of Late Transgender Comedian Daphne Dorman From ‘The Closer'

The family of Daphne Dorman, the late transgender comedian who Dave Chappelle highlights in his new Netflix special “The Closer,” say he’s an LGBTQ ally and meant the world to her.

It didn’t take long for Dave Chappelle’s sixth Netflix stand-up special The Closer, which dropped early Tuesday morning, to have critics and some fans shaking their heads by the afternoon.

The 48-year-old was quickly taken to task by the LGBTQ community for wading into the controversy surrounding rapper DaBaby, who inexplicably spewed homophobic comments during his performance at Miami’s Rolling Loud festival over the summer.

ADVERTISING

Chappelle also took a stand for Harry Potter author turned anti-trans activist J.K. Rowling. “Effectively, she said gender was a fact, the trans community got mad as fuck, they started calling her a TERF,” he said, adding, “I’m Team TERF. I agree. I agree, man. Gender is a fact.”

And, as he began to close the show out, Chappelle launched into a story about his friend and fellow comedian, Daphne Dorman—a transgender woman he’d struck up a friendship with after bonding over their shared humor and their ability to have an open conversation about identity.

He had previously referred to their friendship in his 2019 Netflix special Sticks & Stones, and credited Dorman for defending him against similar admonishment after some of his jokes in the set were labeled transphobic.

The crowd let out a slight gasp when Chappelle stated that Dorman had taken her own life in October 2019, a few weeks after sticking up for him online. “I don’t know what the trans community did for her,” Chappelle said, “but I don’t care, because I feel like she wasn’t their tribe. She was mine. She was a comedian in her soul.”

Chappelle finished the show by declaring he'd be hitting pause on jokes about the LGBTQ community until he and the LGBTQ community could both be laughing together again. “I’m telling you, it’s done. I’m done talking about it,” he concluded. “All I ask of your community, with all humility: Will you please stop punching down on my people?”

And while some voiced concerns that Chappelle may be using his relationship as a cheap get-out-of-jail-free card to validate his earlier line of commentary, Dorman’s family believes there should be no offense taken, for they certainly aren’t.

Two of Dorman’s sisters told The Daily Beast they were outraged at the suggestion that Chappelle’s set was transphobic or derogatory toward the LGBTQ community, saying they wanted to make clear they supported the comedian.

“Daphne was in awe of Dave’s graciousness,” Dorman’s sister Becky wrote in a text. “She did not find his jokes rude, crude, off-coloring, off-putting, anything. She thought his jokes were funny. Daphne understood humor and comedy—she was not offended. Why would her family be offended?”

“Dave loved my sister and is an LGBTQ ally,” Dorman’s younger sister Brandy added in a text message. “His entire set was begging to end this very situation.”

Dave loved my sister and is an LGBTQ ally. His entire set was begging to end this very situation.
“At this point I feel like he poured his heart out in that special and no one noticed,” Brandy wrote in a separate Facebook post. “What he’s saying to the LGBTQ family is, ‘I see you. Do you see me? I’m mourning my friend in the best way I know how. Can you see me? Can you allow me that?’... This was a call to come together, that two oppressed factions of our nation put down their keyboards and make peace. How sad that this message was lost in translation.”

Dorman, a San Francisco-based activist, software engineer, and aspiring actress, had met Chappelle on the comedy circuit; he recalled in a “hidden extra” of Sticks & Stones that Dorman had been “laughing the hardest” at some of his jokes that many deemed transphobic.

The two developed a friendship, with Chappelle offering to give Dorman pointers as she launched her stand-up career, even inviting her to open a show for him while he was in San Francisco.

Thrilled by the shoutout in Sticks & Stones, Dorman confirmed in an Instagram post that she was the woman Chappelle was talking about, happily freaking out that her photo appeared after former President Barack Obama’s photo.

But as the backlash against Chappelle grew, Dorman felt moved to speak out. “Punching down requires you to consider yourself superior to another group. He doesn’t consider himself better than me in any way. He isn’t punching up or punching down. He’s punching lines. That’s his job and he’s a master of his craft,” she wrote, a line Chappelle repeated in The Closer.

Dorman took her own life on Oct. 11, 2019 at the age of 44, and The Closer was released a few days shy of the second anniversary of her passing. “To those of you who are mad at me: please forgive me,” she had written in a final Facebook post. “To those of you who wonder if you failed me: you didn’t. To those of you feel like I failed you: I did and I’m sorry and I hope you’ll remember me in better times and better light.”

Becky wanted to make clear that her family does not blame Dorman’s death on Chappelle. “After she committed suicide, all I saw all over social media was Dave Chappelle-bashing,” she said. “I commented on so many posts, which is something I do not do. I commented to defend Dave.

“No one knows what life was like for my siblings and I,” she added. “We are products of how we were brought . Dave was the biggest bright spot for Daphne; she was enamored for the first time. Blaming Dave is beyond the wrong thing to do. He helped her and let her be comfortable while talking with him. She had many demons; Dave Chappelle was NOT one of them.”

Becky confirmed that over the summer, Chappelle had finalized setting up a college fund for Dorman’s young daughter, adding that she had planned to watch the special later that night. “I saw his first special and was thrilled for my sister and even more so after we got to talk about together,” she wrote.

“The man loved my sister and felt empathy towards her human experience and, yes, he makes terrible jokes that are also funny,” Brandy added in her Facebook post. “News flash, our whole family does that. Our funerals are laughter through tears, we mourn by remembering the times we laughed together, and yes, some inappropriate humor, too... As often as Dave stands up for Daphne, we will be there for Dave. This man is our tribe, and we mourn alongside him.”

Growing up in a fairly conservative environment and being the "only" or "first" Black everything, LGBTQ was not something being championed, and I did encounter a handful of openly gay people, though none during my K-12 years, which, wrapping in the mid 90s was a torrent of pejoratives and slurs that were rarely delivered with literal intent. Not as if that shit made it ANY more comfortable for any students TO come out.

After 4 years at a liberal arts institution, seeing LGBTQ and POC as in alliance became normalized. So while white folks have long lacked the power to truly disappoint me (can only pleasantly surprise me), it was interesting being at a 4th of July party for a gay co-worker where only three women (my future wife included) were present and presumably every other of the 40 something men, except one other, was gay. Though I hadn't been in such a space since college, the only memorable takeaway from that evening was the white judge (I'm not sure whether he had come out or was closeted) who was unapologetically Islamophobic. The thought of him making decisions affecting lives daily with that mindset was troubling, to put it mildly. This was nearly 20 years ago.

Every topic he discussed, to me, extracted or underscored whiteness. Having dealt with anti-Blackness in subtle, overt, benign, or toxic forms for most of my life, the whiteness examination resonates strongly. That folks are walking past that, when so many of his previous bits did not uplift or celebrate folks, but instead made a point is interesting. I also find it telling that his use of "bitch" has never impacted folks' consumption of his context, despite the many graphic and disrespectful ways he's spoken about women in his comedy.

What I find most singular about Dave is that he did the unthinkable in walking away from that amount of money, came back, and actually surpassed his previously reached apex. I am sure there is a part of him that has never fully recovered from the brutality of the industry, who had influence/who was protected or favored and it seems that more than anything, THAT is what he takes personal.

I was wondering about the 'bitch' and 'nigger-nigga' being said all throughout.

… Dave’s blind spots (to use an overly generous term) don’t just include the LGBTQIA community, but women as well.

But hatred of women is not a thing that people really care about so…

That said, I’m a huge Dave Chappelle fan. He is, quite clearly, a genius. That is why his blind spots are more glaring for me. More egregious. I wanna say, “you’re better/smarter than this, Dave.”

But alas, he ain’t.

"LBGTQIA" just became a thing a few years ago, the average person of any age today probably couldn't tell what all the letters stand for off the top of their head, its it really that hard to believe that someone of Dave's generation has a "blind spot" there?

He is but a few years older than me. So yes… I expect him to be wise enough to be better. And really… what the letters mean is hardly the point and you know it.

But more importantly, it’s not that I don’t expect him, or anyone, to have blind spots. It’s that his level of genius — for me — means that I expect him to be better about acknowledging and navigating those blind spots without shitting on people. Maybe an unfair expectation, but it is how I feel.

I’m disappointed that he refuses to acknowledge them, and even more disappointed that he’s throwing his toys at the expense of these communities.

If you grew up with a father, grandfathers or uncles in your life different opinions and stubbornness or "blind spots" about certain issues that don't meet your expectations shouldn't really be that disappointing to you if you're realistic IRL. Maybe this is a referendum on your own feelings.

I very clearly stated that I understand and expect people to have blind spots. But I expect Dave to be better and smarter about acknowledging and navigating his. Unfair expectation? Maybe. But he’s smart enough to know and do better. And frankly, he understands the power he wields… and the implications of that power… that’s what led him to walk away from The Chappelle Show. So I absolutely expect him to — at minimum — be more careful with his platform. Instead, like a petulant child, he’s just choosing not to. Worse? He’s doubling down just because he can.

Trash behavior.

I’ll also say… that while the LGBTQIA community’s voice is as loud as it is is because of white people… we too often forget that there are MANY people who look like us that are a part of that community and they are affected (more acutely) when the Dave’s of the world use their platform to be shitty. While he’s super fucking busy saying “fuck you” to white people who dislike his posture around the LGBTQIA community (which, if I’ve not been clear, is fucking terrible), he’s putting Black people on the line.

Trash behavior.

the LGBT community and their criticisms of things he's said about them with Whiteness and white supremecy comes across as him to trying to shift the framing to make him appear as the underdog speaking up to some all powerful, dominant group instead of a Millionaire Cisgendered-Heterosexual Male being called out by a community that's faces leget issues because they don't fall under those prementioned categories

This also ignores the Non-White people in that community who aren't insulated by race/financial status who are more likely to be in poverty or targeted by violence due to their appearance/gender identity/sexuality.

There's a reason Kevin Hart got more backlash than Sarah Silverman and Amy Schumer. There's a reason DaBaby is canceled whereas the white artists aren't. If we being honest THEY don't care about the people you mentioned otherwise Ed Buck gets the same treatment Kevin Hart received.

that happened with Sarah Silverman or Amy Schumer?

I haven't seen either one of those 2 recently so maybe they did I dunno, Dave Chappelle has way more eyes on him than those 2 combined

As of now nothing has really "happened" to him other than people voicing disagreement with something he said, a Gay rights group asked Netflix to remove the special but there's a snowsball's chance in hell of them actually taking it down.

IMHO, it's biggest "problem" that it isn't particularly funny. Outside of the MLK impressions, I barely chuckled.

Content-wise, there's a lot to unpack, but I think he's making a lot his arguments on bad faith. Honestly, it's a weird choice to make the subtext of the whole special about what happened to Da Baby. I wonder if he'd recording this a few weeks earlier or later if his whole set would have been completely different.

Yes, much of it is him trying to make points about intersectionality. I get that, but a lot of the times he comes off like Bill Maher after UC Berkeley students circulated a petition to ban him from campus. Most of the time he sounds mad that he can't tell jokes the way he used to/wants to. And I'm sorry, "killing someone's career" isn't at all like actually killing someone. Especially since getting "cancelled" his yet to actually end anyone's career as of yet.

I'd say the thing that I found the most problematic (along with his overall obsession with "LGBTQ people are being mean to me!") is that his main argument seems to be the women/LGBTQ aren't protesting or conducting themselves the way he wants them to or would like them to. And that's really arguing in bad faith. Especially the whole "I made a sacrifice and you didn't" stance.

And, yeah, I found the story at the end a bit disingenuous. As someone said above, it did come off as "Some of my best friends are Trans!" Then him sideways blaming the Trans community for her death was self-serving as well, on some, "Well, she didn't kill herself until she publicly defended me and the Trans community dragged on Twitter. So, you know..."

I don't know how long it'll be before he does another one of these. I don't think just "moving on" is going to be particularly. But I really hope when he comes back, it isn't more of, "These people are picking on me and it isn't fair." I don't need to hear another Eminem album.

"Dave Chappelle represents a segment of society (along with white supremacists, hoteps, incels, and others) that is anxious about the waning power of cisheteronormativity and the patriarchy.

People like him know that their outdated, limited view of the world is obsolete, and instead of transforming in the name of empathy and humility, they lean into toxicity.

Chappelle reveals the ignorant tensions in the Black community about queerness and transness but doesn’t have the range to turn them on their head. In fact, he underscores the bigoted status quo.

It’s convenient for Black cishet male comedians to talk about LGBTQ+ folks as if our group is only or even predominantly white. With that frame, they don’t have to contend with how Black cishet folks often enact (physical and psychological) violence on Black LGBTQ+ folks.

With that frame, Chappelle and other Black cishet men don’t have to acknowledge that their hate of trans and queer people is more than “just jokes.” It regularly becomes beating “the queer” out of young people, shunning us, and even killing us.

Let’s be clear: Homophobia and transphobia aren’t just dynamics that exist in the Black community. It’s antiBlack to assert that narrative, especially when most of the anti -LGBTQ+ policies pushed around the world come from a white colonial power structure.

Interestingly, many Black folks think of queerness and transness as white inventions because much of the most regressive LGBTQ+ policies in other countries have been exported and stoked by white conservative and evangelical politicians.

Chappelle could have laid bare his insecurities with his gender and sexuality. We know so many Black cishet men are scrambling to understand their place in a cultural context where queer and trans people have microphones and platforms too.

Take, for instance, the DaBaby, Boosie, and Lil Nas X debacle. The tirades against queer and trans people being visible are really about their fear that their toxic and limited views on masculinity are losing their footing.

What does it mean for Black cishet rappers to contend with the fact that Lil Nas X has transcended beyond their success? They take it as an insult to their “rightful” place as the gatekeepers of Black culture.

And what does it mean for Black cishet men, writ-large, to contend with Black women, Black LGBTQ+ folks, and more charting their destinies independent of their patriarchal “leadership?”

They feel owed the power that white cishet men have historically had, and they haven’t gotten it. They think we’ve jumped a few steps in the March toward equity any time they’re held accountable for their transphobia and queerphobia.

Yes, transphobia and queerphobia are about fear. I don’t entirely buy the reframing of these concepts as solely about “hate for LGBTQ+ people.” They are fearful of losing a way of life, a claim to power, and a claim to an identity that is rooted in dominating “lesser” groups.

I challenge Black cishet men to interrogate what their identity means to them. Who are you without being the “head” of the household/tribe/culture? Who could you be if you saw Black community-building and cultural-building as the collaborative effort it truly is?

Who could you be if you took on expanding Black masculinity and manhood without having to repress other Black experiences of the feminine, gender nonconforming, queer variety?

It’s sad to witness Chappelle’s decline. He was once someone we could count on to punch up against white supremacy, but in a time where damn near everyone is “woke on race,” it seems punching down on the trans community is his shock tactic.

Chappelle is now a wealthy cishet Black man with little else to offer to his audiences, but low-hanging uninformed fruit. And cishet folks who claim the LGBTQ+ community have to thin a skin also lack the range to confront their own prejudices in a meaningful way.

Lastly, it’s particularly sinister for Chappelle to wrap his special up with a narrative that the trans community viciously went after Daphne Dorman. I don’t buy it. He’s using that to justify his hate.

You’re telling us that a community that has been so intimately aware of doxxing and harassment almost since the inception of social media is the culprit when we live in a society where trans folks continue to face systemic discrimination?

And for all the folks caping for Dave’s narrative about his “trans friend,” do you consider the trans people who will be harassed and experience violence because he told millions of people to not take our experiences and voices seriously?

Dave’s using his trans friend’s story is hardly any different than white people using their token Black friends as ammo to shoot down their racism. And the “trans on trans” harassment narrative plays out like the “Black on Black” crime narrative. Dave just skirts accountability.

Lastly, I’ll just say one of the greatest tells that he is disingenuous is that he in one breath claims Twitter isn’t a real place (or the concerns of trans folks don’t matter), but that the trans people on Twitter led to Daphne’s demise. It’s all nonsensical.

I actually don't disagree with any of that. Even the part about Chappelle "underscoring the bigoted status quo." That's a fair accusation. But she starts trying to be a psychologist... one who comes across very unaware of the Black community's historical trajectory, especially Black men.

None of that is verifiable. It's nothing more than a narrative created to explain what she's seeing. It's not informed by history or stats.
Black men writ-large have never sought to be white men or to have the power that they have. These are the kinds of narratives created when no one actually cares what Black men have to say, never finds it odd that institutions reject our studies of ourselves, and it's considered taboo to humanize our experience of white patriarchy, which disproportionately targets us for death and torture.

>you saw Black community-building and cultural-building as the
>collaborative effort it truly is?

Does she realize how many of us are raised by single mothers and exist in heavily matriarchal communities. How many of us grow up having never seen a Black man even stand up to a Black woman in our personal lives? How many of us know all the women in our lineage while the men are spoken about in passing or as utilities... or just negatively overall? In other words, the vast majority of Black men ALREADY know who we are without being the "head". It's the position our community is in now and has been in for about 40 or 50 yrs at least.

>Who could you be if you took on expanding Black masculinity
>and manhood without having to repress other Black experiences
>of the feminine, gender nonconforming, queer variety?
>
>It’s sad to witness Chappelle’s decline. He was once
>someone we could count on to punch up against white supremacy,
>but in a time where damn near everyone is “woke on race,”
>it seems punching down on the trans community is his shock
>tactic.

People aren't woke on race. People have some awareness but are mostly wildly uninformed historically and statistically. Unfortunately, she's proving that point.

>Chappelle is now a wealthy cishet Black man with little else
>to offer to his audiences, but low-hanging uninformed fruit.
>And cishet folks who claim the LGBTQ+ community have to thin a
>skin also lack the range to confront their own prejudices in a
>meaningful way.

I don't see any lies there. The tone of the piece just seems to be using "cishet Black man" with some suggestion that cishet Black men operate with some disproportionate privilege with regard to the rest of the Black community, which has been thoroughly debunked at this point.

>Lastly, it’s particularly sinister for Chappelle to wrap his
>special up with a narrative that the trans community viciously
>went after Daphne Dorman. I don’t buy it. He’s using that
>to justify his hate.

Can't be mad at her for saying that. I'd say with him it's more an unwillingness to accept the concept of people being born into the wrong body as legit, but I understand why she says he's using Daphne's story to justify it.

>You’re telling us that a community that has been so
>intimately aware of doxxing and harassment almost since the
>inception of social media is the culprit when we live in a
>society where trans folks continue to face systemic
>discrimination?

Idk why she finds that impossible to believe. Oppressed communities attack each other all the time due to differing beliefs on how their oppression should be handled.

>And for all the folks caping for Dave’s narrative about his
>“trans friend,” do you consider the trans people who will
>be harassed and experience violence because he told millions
>of people to not take our experiences and voices seriously?

That's a bit hyperbolic. He told some jokes that were in bad taste, yet he also told a story of hanging out with this person, and inviting her on his show... becoming her friend. Her family loves Dave, etc. Idk if that's "telling millions of people to not take their experiences and voices seriously", especially when he literally says he believed her when she said she was having a human experience. Granted, I have a more nuanced view of that elsewhere in the post, and while I don't necessarily feel it's enough, I don't think he's calling for or encouraging violence against trans people. If anything, he encouraged HIS crowd to show more understanding to trans people than they currently do. That's where I have to say Trinity kinda has a point about meeting people where they are, especially when you're trying to broaden their minds. If he did something negative, he showed his crowd, by example, how to accept the person but not their full experience... which I do agree is harmful still. Not violence or harrassment... but it's definitely hurtful.

>Dave’s using his trans friend’s story is hardly any
>different than white people using their token Black friends as
>ammo to shoot down their racism. And the “trans on trans”
>harassment narrative plays out like the “Black on Black”
>crime narrative. Dave just skirts accountability.

I wish she would've said more about how she feels he's skirting accoutability. Accountability for her death? Does she feel he's partially responsible? I've said in another post in here that I think it's possible he could've contributed but no one knows for sure.

>Lastly, I’ll just say one of the greatest tells that he is
>disingenuous is that he in one breath claims Twitter isn’t a
>real place (or the concerns of trans folks don’t matter),
>but that the trans people on Twitter led to Daphne’s demise.
>It’s all nonsensical.

That's a really good point. What's ironic though, is she contradicts herself in the same way. Her whole article is a critique of a part of her own community, saying they're violent toward another part of her community. Then she says

>You’re telling us that a community that has been so
>intimately aware of doxxing and harassment almost since the
>inception of social media is the culprit when we live in a
>society where trans folks continue to face systemic
>discrimination?

YES! Because aren't you telling us that a communtiy that has been intimately aware of violence and harassment since the inception of this country is the culprit when we live in a society where Black folks continue to face systemic discrimination? Yet she asks her question like trans' experience makes it impossible for them to perpetrate the similar behavior. She didn't think that one through.

The LBGTQ+ community in America is OVERWHELMINGLY white, in every community represented by each of those letters. That's not to say that being LBGTQ+ is some white people shit, but critiquing the racism in an overwhelmingly white community should be a given.

This is HUUUUGE fucking leap, that again does the white supremacist fuckshit of equating Black male thought with violence, and fuck anyone who does this.
Also, why is the focus solely on "cishet" BM?
BW arent critical of the gay community?
BW arent homophobic?

I only touched on the way she was using "cishet Black men" and what she's implying with that.

>this is just scarybadblackman fearmongering in intersectional
>rainbow speak...which is to say white woman talk.

That definitely needed to be said. I thought about it much later after posting, but it's actually hypocritical of her to say that Black men want the power that white men have WHILE she's using the same tactic of gaining white male approval that suffragists popularized and every non-Black PoC group employs... attacking the fictional Black boogeyman. It's like the initiation to join the Friends of White Supremacy Club.

>The rest of this thread is typical projection, stupidity and

Yeah, it's heavy on that.

THIS argument in particular

"Black men want the power that white men have"

is so arbitrarily and blanketly applied to ANY criticism that any Black man has of modern pop liberalism that nobody should remotely take that shit seriously.

Think about what that would mean in this context.

Chappelle is criticizing the racism of the majority white, male, & wealthy trans movement in America...because he wants to be a white male?

FOH.

It's the only intellectual-sounding arrow in these kinds of folks quiver, and it's really really dumb

Especially with those white lgbtqia talking points you are spewing. A Black person dares to disagree and have an opinion and it is immediately 'off with their heads!'. That's the real fear. A Black person standing their ground; be it right or wrong. The audacity! Call the police because they refuse to believe what I tell them or go where I tell them to go....and that makes me uncomfortable! And their refusal is responsible for so many deaths; not the system itself that someone else created. Black men are the monsters and created the power structure that oppresses the lgbtqia community. So quick, call the police because they need to be dealt with.

FOH!

At least there is a conversation being had about transgendered and male/female identity. Meanwhile, Black people are fighting (...and losing the fight) just to be seen as human beings! This includes Black men, Black women, and Black lgbtqia. Remember you are Black first before anything else. I know there are those who wish it was the other way around, and will believe it.....until they get their wake-up call.
A win for the lgbtqia is a win for the white lgbtquia. A win for feminists is a win for the white feminists. They are the ones who want the power structure of white men. They use Black faces as mascots to equate to the Black struggle thus garnering sympathy and support until what they truly want comes into fruition (via enforced laws and everything else). Meanwhile, the problems that afflict Black women and lgbtqia will continue because it is really all about white entitlement, privilege, and supremacy be it men, women, or lgbtqia.

That is what, I believe, it all boils down to for Dave. You can call a nigga a nigga and murder a nigga....but don't you dare hurt the lgbtqia's feelings because they have it worse than anybody.

He may not be right on all fronts, but he is entitled to his opinion (...and he seems open to discussion) without being labeled a monster, or phobic, and have this type of backlash.
