No candidate is going to be perfect. It's the issues that they and their party stand for. Being that these two (Gore/Bush) are practically polar opposites, one of the two have to represent something, issue, concern that represents you. If you are looking at the men and not the causes that are going to affect you... then you missed it.

My goal, as was the goal of MOST Gore, i think, voters wasn't to make Gore president but to keep bush from becoming president.

Nader voters argue that they voted their conscience. well what did it get them? self-satisfaction in knowing they did so? great. but it also got them Gee Dub as their president (maybe).

is that what they wanted? i mean, i understand their point that neither candidate was desireable..but why vote for someone who had no chance of defeating either candidate? the lesser of the two evils would seem to me to be, unfortunately, the best chance at keeping Gee Dub out of the white house.

so if i HAD to point a finger, it would be aimed squarely at those who, in my opinion, threw their votes away on Ralph Nader.

Blame Nader if you will, but Nader didn't blow 3 debates, for Gore. Gore didn't challenge Nader at all, he could've debated Nader, why didn't cuz he would've worsened his chances, if you can't beat Bush in a debate i know you can't beat Nader. Also Nader didn't cause Gore to underestimate Bush.
Even DNC Chairman Ed Rendell criticized the Gore campaign's major errors:

1 Not exposing Bush's record in Texas
2 Not taking on Bush's accounts of lying by exposing Bush's Lies
3 Underestimating Bush's ability as a candidate
4 Alienating much of the Democratic base until the last weekend
4a Trying to appeal to a more middle class middle of the road deomographic that's outside of the liberal sphere
5 Refusing to use The President to run on his behalf in key areas
Black, Latino and Feminist voting blocks

The reason why Buchanan isn't taking more votes from Bush is because Bush is a better candidate to the right than Gore is to the left. Gore has given the Left virtually no reason to support him and he is hoping the Left will do so out of fear.

I don't like the sound of this. I personally would like to see a clear cut winner. The Florida Recount will be controversial for a long time to come, especially since South Florida has had a history of voter fraud and scandals, mainly in the favor of the Democratic Party.

I think Bush should get the nod. Although he lost the popular vote by a small margin, he has had the support of way more states than Gore. The only states Gore took were in the Northeast, California, New Mexico, Michigan, and Illinois. The rest supported Bush. Bush even took Gore AND Clinton's home states. I am seeing this as an urban vs. rural area matchup. Gore is taking the urban and metropolitan loaded states while Bush is getting the rest. Thank goodness the Fathers saw this coming, and made sure there was a fair shake in both the presidential election, but also on how Congress was shaped and districted. If not for them, we could have had urban dominance in this election, and given the election of that brewhag, Hillary Clinton, we can tell most of them aren't that bright to begin with.

I think he'll win Florida, but let's say for a minute Florida's votes weren't included. I still believe he should win. All of Gore's gains were concentrated on the Northeast and the West Coast. California and New York were the only states that kept Gore in it. Bush took everything else. I feel the next president should have had some kind of support from all regions of the country, as Bush did, yet Gore's base was built on heavily populated states. I think Bush will get the win, although I smell a rat in Florida. I don't trust a state where Janet Reno has stroke.

As far as the jobs they'll do, there is no doubt that Bush, if he wins Florida, would have the biggest advantage ever for a Republican president since Reconstruction. A majority of the House, the Senate, and the number of Governors. Not to mention with Colin Powell (He wasted no time announcing that one did he?) he has the potential to have a very strong support team. I think he will do a SLIGHTLY better job than Gore. However, if he can't enact policy in the next 4 years, the Republican Party is doomed. They have no excuses now on getting their programs and platform off the ground.

No doubt I do. The Electoral College allows smaller states that usually wouldn't have much of a voice to influence an election to collaborate and give them equal footing for highly populated states.

Also to understand the Electoral College is to understand the founding of this nation. The federal government didn't make the states. The STATES made the federal government. Therefore they ultimately should have the power individually to decide the leaders of the federal government within their own boundaries. That way, they indeed all have a voice. No doubt if it wasn't for even a state like Montana, or Alabama, or even New Hampshire (the only NE state Bush carried), then Bush would have been screwed. If he does win Florida, he will only have a majority in the College by one point.....and that's, and I emphasize, that's IF none of the electorate voters, particularly in Florida, turn tail and succomb under pressure to change their vote.

Bush had support from states in every region of the country. Gore didn't. Hell he couldn't even win in his home state of Tennessee or Clinton's home state of Arkansas.

Then again, a talk show host stated that Gore actually did win in his home state....Washington DC.

Therefore I am not complaining, because either way the Electoral College did it's job and kept it as fair as possible, IMO. People who complain about the EC obviously don't know what it's purpose is for.

Did I say the government was controlled by urban interests now? NO.

I said the Electoral College helps to stop that from happening. The Electoral College gives states recognition that normally wouldn't have much attention any other way in a presidential race, such as some of the Midwestern states. Most of the attention would go to the states that are densely populated and have high numbers of metropolitan areas. Therefore the smaller states could be left out in the cold. If it wasn't for those smaller states this year, Bush wouldnt have had a chance in this election.

As for this being an urban site, I don't really know where the hq for this place is (nor do I care, to be honest), but if I'm not mistakening people all over the world visit this site, and it's doubtful that all come from urban areas. Another thing, don't try to make the word "urban" seem as if its a code word. Urban does not mean minority, although it may in your book.

Do you know why Robert Byrd gets re-elected every time he goes up in West Virginia? It's becase he's able to bring tremendous amounts of political pork home to a very rural state.

If you think there's a balance between rural and urban interests in this country, you're simply wrong. There is scholarly work after scholarly work that shows that, under our wonderful system, urban interests are underepresented and urban areas don't receive representation in governing bodies proprotional to thier population. They, along with residents of poor rural places like Appalachia, are also are poorest residents and could most benefit from representation and the help that would presumably go long with it. Instead we systematically discriminate against poor areas.

On discussing the states that "Bush took" you are missing a key understanding in your logic. Bush got electoral votes, and not many of them. The popular vote i.e. the actual people's voices, went to Gore. The electoral voters are supposed to go with the popular majority, but they are not required to by every state. some get fines, few jail time, but many no consequence. Also who do you think become electoral voters? We'll make it even more general... from what Socio-Economic class do you think the electoral college voters come from. ... interesting isn't it.

The popular vote this year meant a lot especially when you look at how many people actually came out to vote. 10% of the voters were black which is huge considering that only 12 % of americans are black!

And as for the corruptness going on in Florida (which is VERY, VERY REAL) it is going on everywhere. Florida is just under the mic right now because of the way the states turned in their votes. But this shit is happening everywhere. Listen to the radio stations... there is so much more than meets the eye here.

Wrong. Yours is flawed because you're looking at the national popular vote as a whole and not the popular vote of the states seperately. Name me one state that went against the grain (or will do so) of the popular count of their individual state.

(However, to put this into proper perspective, they DON'T have to go with the popular vote. And they don't meet in DC until January 6th. You got to feel sorry for Florida's electives, especially the Republican ones, because they will have tremendous pressure to change their vote to give the election to Al Gore. All in all, we WON'T be sure who will be president for certain until the 6th.)

Once again, your logic is flawed. 10% of anything is not necessarily a good thing. When black participation is like maybe 20% or so, then we can talk.

Not to mention, necessarily when the election turnout is high, that usually favors Democrats. However, Gore BARELY led in the popular vote, which is bad because all pundits are saying Gore got a whopping 90% of the black vote. That speaks volumes, I feel, that people want to cut down on expanding government.

It's on both sides, but you don't hear about them. The extra ballots were found in counties that usually vote Democratic. The ballots in Palm Beach County were made by a county Democratic Party official (I've seen a replica of the ballot. You have to be a complete IDIOT to vote Buchanan when intending to vote for Gore.), not to mention the Democratic Party approved the ballot beforehand.

Either way, it's guaranteed that the Socialist Democratic Party will whine and complain and say Bush cheated, either illegally though some kind of voter fraud in Florida or through legally though the Electoral College (don't be surprised if the motion for a new constitutional amendment takes form in the near future.). All in all, everyone is going to believe what they want to believe.

Hell, Powell is the most powerful man in Washington, and could have became president in either the 96 or the 2000 elections. I expect Powell, along with Condoleeza Rice, who might get the Secretary of Defense nod, and Powell's son, who should be FCC Commissioner, to be key voices in a Bush administration.

Please. Powell would have done way better than McCain in the primaries. In fact, he could probably have ran on the Democratic ticket. Powell appeals to both sides of the isle because he's in truth a moderate Democrat, but he's in the Republican Party because his strong views on foreign policy and military advancement, something the Democrats are weak on. Other than that, he would have beaten Gore and Bush easily. Only Clinton would have stood a chance to beat him back in 96, but now Clinton doesn't stand a chance. You'll hear a louder call for him to run in 08 if Bush wins this year.

Powell wouldn't have to. He'd take a decent percentage of the South because the South is moving Republican as the days go by. There is no doubt he'll take a high percentage of the black vote. War heroes and military men have always done well in presidential races, and although the primaries might give Powell a little trouble in the South, I wouldn't expect it to anywhere else.

More smug statements from a guy that simply is turning out to seem like a real asshole. There is NO, I repeat, NO, requirement for "intelligence" in the right of enfranchisement in the Constitution! Adults of marginal mental capacity are given the right to vote (I have personally registered people with serious learning defects, and others who were slightly mentally retarded, and illiterate individuals), and that's a GREAT thing, because they can protect their interests. If we start making comments that citizens with diminished mental abilities should not be enfranchised, then we put ourselves in a horrible presumptuous position of having to decide who is "fit" or "unfit" to have a basic Constitutional right, and that ish is eerily reminiscent of some slavery, "3/5 of a man" shit.

And for you to call a whole group of interested voting citizens(possibly as high as 19,000) "morons" because they may have ended up voting in a way they did not intend is just SAD on your part. Intent is the cornerstone of almost every law on the books, and Intent in voting MUST be of the UTMOST concern if we are going to preserve the integrity and faith in the system of enfranchisement, or else we open the door to tricanery in balloting and fraud.

I have read some of your claims before, some are on point, most are outlandish (the naming of yourself as "Expertise", I hope for your sake, was tongue-in-cheek), but I notice you must always resort to some "Democrats/Gore = Bad" generalized statement. Where is the "expertise" or intelligent thought in taunting those whom you don't share their political views by making dismissive comments about their integrity or intelligence?

On a personal note, I recall horror stories that my family in Louisiana (swamp cajun creoles) would tell me about how my only somewhat literate great-grandfather, once given the right to vote as a Black man, was turned away from the polls, then not given privacy when he cast his vote, then given a ballot that was not easy for him to decipher so he never was quite sure he voted the way he intended, all over several elections well into the 70s. Those were tricks of the trade back in the day to keep Black people from swinging the votes in Southern counties. I think the methods of prevention of enfranchisement, nowadays, although far more covert than the examples I gave about my great-granddaddy, are still present.

Those voters in Palm County are NOT gonna take this shit lying down.... if you've seen the ethnic composition of the voters there, they are overwhelmingly White, and you know how White folks are when they feel like THEIR rights have been trampled on! They are going to HAVE to be addressed.

Actually it was 10 pm Eastern. I know because I had just finished watching Scott Steiner kickin ass on Nitro and turned over to CNN and they had just gotten the opinion in their hands.

I kinda feel sorry for Al Gore. I mean he doesn't have shyt else to do, and will soon fade out of public eyesight. He doesn't have law experience, nor does he have a public office to fall back on, and there's no way in hell he'll ever get another one in Tennessee. Simply put, he's screwed. I guess he'll surface somewhere as a professor at some liberal arts institution, but that's about it.
