19602, REWIND! it aint over! Posted by illosopher, Tue Nov-07-00 11:44 PM
as of 4:39am, only 240 votes separate Bush from Gore in Florida in other words too close to call...
Plus Gore is winning the popular vote...

the most deserving of the booby prize would still go to Nader supporters. why, you ask? because they obviously did not WANT Gee Dub to be president and then threw their votes away on a man that did not have a snowballs chance in hell of becoming president; thereby HELPING gee dub get the job.
the turn-coats WANTED to give Gee Dub the job, so they voted for him.

19606, You pointing the finger? Posted by Ursus, Wed Nov-08-00 11:12 AM
I voted for Nader.
I could not support either one of the candidates even remotely, so why would I vote for them?
Are you blaming me for voting for someone I supported and agreed with (for the most part).
I would like to thank the two parties for giving me the shitiest choice of candidates to choose from. (I think I may have gone differently had McCain and Bradley been elected).
So fine you can go ahead and say that Nader supporters gave Bush the office. I dislike Gore as much as I dislike Bush. Either way I lost. Therefore I vorted for a candidate who I felt had some good ideas about healthcare and called out the "polarization" of $$ in America.

Ursus the shame of it is... you missed the point.
No candidate is going to be perfect. It's the issues that they and their party stand for. Being that these two (Gore/Bush) are practically polar opposites, one of the two have to represent something, issue, concern that represents you. If you are looking at the men and not the causes that are going to affect you... then you missed it.
And so did your vote.

19612, my point Posted by grannie, Fri Nov-10-00 07:40 AM
..almost.
any government official is a dickhead, we can all agree to that. this includes Ralph Nader, too.
but a Gore administration, in my opinion, would be less unbearable than a Bush one. we've already survived a Bush administration..big george almost single handedly led the country into a second depression, remember?
My goal, as was the goal of MOST Gore, i think, voters wasn't to make Gore president but to keep bush from becoming president.
Nader voters argue that they voted their conscience. well what did it get them? self-satisfaction in knowing they did so? great. but it also got them Gee Dub as their president (maybe).
is that what they wanted? i mean, i understand their point that neither candidate was desireable..but why vote for someone who had no chance of defeating either candidate? the lesser of the two evils would seem to me to be, unfortunately, the best chance at keeping Gee Dub out of the white house.
so if i HAD to point a finger, it would be aimed squarely at those who, in my opinion, threw their votes away on Ralph Nader.

19614, RE: it's over /blame Nader Posted by illosopher, Wed Nov-08-00 11:47 AM
Blame Nader if you will, but Nader didn't blow 3 debates, for Gore. Gore didn't challenge Nader at all, he could've debated Nader, why didn't cuz he would've worsened his chances, if you can't beat Bush in a debate i know you can't beat Nader. Also Nader didn't cause Gore to underestimate Bush. Even DNC Chairman Ed Rendell criticized the Gore campaign's major errors:
1 Not exposing Bush's record in Texas 2 Not taking on Bush's accounts of lying by exposing Bush's Lies 3 Underestimating Bush's ability as a candidate 4 Alienating much of the Democratic base until the last weekend 4a Trying to appeal to a more middle class middle of the road deomographic that's outside of the liberal sphere 5 Refusing to use The President to run on his behalf in key areas Black, Latino and Feminist voting blocks
There are several more errors but if he would've took advantage of the election by taking advantage of any of these strategies. Don't Hate the Nader hate the Game.

>satan still had gore beat by >over 1k votes when i >checked the news at 545am >today. >if (when) bush wins, we can >all thank every single person >who voted for ralph nader.
The reason why Buchanan isn't taking more votes from Bush is because Bush is a better candidate to the right than Gore is to the left. Gore has given the Left virtually no reason to support him and he is hoping the Left will do so out of fear.
Despite the "nader effect", last I checked (a few hours ago on cnn.com) Gore was AHEAD of Bush in the popular AND the electoral college vote. So how do you 'nader spoiler" theorists explain that?
If Gore loses, it's because he gave too few people reason to vote FOR him.
And I think Gore will win.
But it looks like this election may be decided in a courtroom. There is a suit already being filed to enjoin the State of Florida to hold the vote AGAIN.
There are also allegations that Florida sheriffs stopped blacks who were on their way to the polls!! Maaaaan, looks like some serious civil rights suits are about to be filed.

I don't like the sound of this. I personally would like to see a clear cut winner. The Florida Recount will be controversial for a long time to come, especially since South Florida has had a history of voter fraud and scandals, mainly in the favor of the Democratic Party.
I think Bush should get the nod. Although he lost the popular vote by a small margin, he has had the support of way more states than Gore. The only states Gore took were in the Northeast, California, New Mexico, Michigan, and Illinois. The rest supported Bush. Bush even took Gore AND Clinton's home states. I am seeing this as an urban vs. rural area matchup. Gore is taking the urban and metropolitan loaded states while Bush is getting the rest. Thank goodness the Fathers saw this coming, and made sure there was a fair shake in both the presidential election, but also on how Congress was shaped and districted. If not for them, we could have had urban dominance in this election, and given the election of that brewhag, Hillary Clinton, we can tell most of them aren't that bright to begin with.

I was referring to the set up of Congress, not necessarily the Congressional Districts. As in House of Reps being the lower House, proportioned by population, and Senate being upper, with two reps per state, etc.
Considering that Palm Beach residents can't even read a simple ballot card, SOMEONE needs to mention voter intelligence.

> >Considering that Palm Beach residents can't >even read a simple ballot >card, SOMEONE needs to mention >voter intelligence.
Considering that the State of Florida and the City of Fort Lauderdale broke its own law in how they set up the ballot, SOMEONE needs to mention Republican shadiness.
Bush X
X Buchanan
Gore X
The fixing of this process is obvious, and not done in a way that it will only screw the lesser educated. You want to vote for Gore. The second name you see, on casual glance, is Gore. So you pull the second lever.
This kind of philandering goes on in every state. The problem here is that Florida has a law on its books that says the lever for each canidate on the ballot must appear to the RIGHT of his/her name. So in the area of the disputed Buchanan votes, where this ballot appeared, any self-respecting judge should demand a revote in the area

The ballot was designed by the county election supervisor in Palm Beach County, a Democrat. In fact the entire election board is made up of Democrats. Yeah, the ballot design was _moronic_. But let's not insinuate things that aren't backed by evidence...

Racial Intimidation -- The Sun Sentinel in Broward County reported that four white Florida Highway Patrol troopers set up a checkpoint near a Baptist church where voters in a heavily black district cast their ballots. Florida Democratic Party chairman Bob Poe told ABC News that the troopers seemed to have their "lights flashing and ticketing people."
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Florida attorney general are reportedly investigating a civil rights complaint that was filed in response to the checkpoint charging that it was intended to intimidate black voters.
Democratic Party officials also said that reports of possible voter intimidation in some African American precincts were cropping up. According to Jesse Jackson, black voters in Florida and other southern states were told there were no more ballots or that the polls were closed. "What we need is not just a recount by hand, but also a thorough investigation," Jackson told ABC News.

Whatever. You just like him are trying to use urban as a code word. Urban was meant as a densely populated area, not another word for black people.
Black folks do live in the country also you know.
>btw, expertise, you say bush should >get the nod. well, >if gore wins florida, do >you still think bush should >get the nod? i >mean, are you saying he >should get it anyway, even >if he's not actually legitimately >elected? or were you >just saying that you fully >expect him to get florida? > because if it's the >latter, you're probably right, although >as president i think he'll >do only a slightly shittier >job than gore would have.
I think he'll win Florida, but let's say for a minute Florida's votes weren't included. I still believe he should win. All of Gore's gains were concentrated on the Northeast and the West Coast. California and New York were the only states that kept Gore in it. Bush took everything else. I feel the next president should have had some kind of support from all regions of the country, as Bush did, yet Gore's base was built on heavily populated states. I think Bush will get the win, although I smell a rat in Florida. I don't trust a state where Janet Reno has stroke.
As far as the jobs they'll do, there is no doubt that Bush, if he wins Florida, would have the biggest advantage ever for a Republican president since Reconstruction. A majority of the House, the Senate, and the number of Governors. Not to mention with Colin Powell (He wasted no time announcing that one did he?) he has the potential to have a very strong support team. I think he will do a SLIGHTLY better job than Gore. However, if he can't enact policy in the next 4 years, the Republican Party is doomed. They have no excuses now on getting their programs and platform off the ground.
> btw, did you vote >libertarian or republican? i'm >curious.
Libertarian of course. But I'd just rather have Slightly Bigger Government Bush in than Big Money Grip Government Gore.
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship." - Alexander Tyler

No doubt I do. The Electoral College allows smaller states that usually wouldn't have much of a voice to influence an election to collaborate and give them equal footing for highly populated states.
Also to understand the Electoral College is to understand the founding of this nation. The federal government didn't make the states. The STATES made the federal government. Therefore they ultimately should have the power individually to decide the leaders of the federal government within their own boundaries. That way, they indeed all have a voice. No doubt if it wasn't for even a state like Montana, or Alabama, or even New Hampshire (the only NE state Bush carried), then Bush would have been screwed. If he does win Florida, he will only have a majority in the College by one point.....and that's, and I emphasize, that's IF none of the electorate voters, particularly in Florida, turn tail and succomb under pressure to change their vote.
|

Bush had support from states in every region of the country. Gore didn't. Hell he couldn't even win in his home state of Tennessee or Clinton's home state of Arkansas.
Then again, a talk show host stated that Gore actually did win in his home state....Washington DC.
Therefore I am not complaining, because either way the Electoral College did it's job and kept it as fair as possible, IMO. People who complain about the EC obviously don't know what it's purpose is for.

19637, RE: double hmmmm Posted by Expertise, Thu Nov-09-00 03:32 AM
Did I say the government was controlled by urban interests now? NO.
I said the Electoral College helps to stop that from happening. The Electoral College gives states recognition that normally wouldn't have much attention any other way in a presidential race, such as some of the Midwestern states. Most of the attention would go to the states that are densely populated and have high numbers of metropolitan areas. Therefore the smaller states could be left out in the cold. If it wasn't for those smaller states this year, Bush wouldnt have had a chance in this election.
As for this being an urban site, I don't really know where the hq for this place is (nor do I care, to be honest), but if I'm not mistakening people all over the world visit this site, and it's doubtful that all come from urban areas. Another thing, don't try to make the word "urban" seem as if its a code word. Urban does not mean minority, although it may in your book.

Do you know why Robert Byrd gets re-elected every time he goes up in West Virginia? It's becase he's able to bring tremendous amounts of political pork home to a very rural state.
If you think there's a balance between rural and urban interests in this country, you're simply wrong. There is scholarly work after scholarly work that shows that, under our wonderful system, urban interests are underepresented and urban areas don't receive representation in governing bodies proprotional to thier population. They, along with residents of poor rural places like Appalachia, are also are poorest residents and could most benefit from representation and the help that would presumably go long with it. Instead we systematically discriminate against poor areas.
Oh, and on the urban/minority difference--you're damn rght I'm using them in a similar fashion. Whether or not you know it, so are you. How many white kids you know live in your closest ghetto? Race, class, and regionalism are all tied up into one ugly thing in this country, keeping those who are nonwhite, poor, and urban in a shitload of trouble. When you celebrate the vote of rural areas, you're celebrating the system that keeps these people down. Deal with it.

That's irrelevant. He still would do the same with a popular vote, given House elections are by popular vote, and chances are he would bring the same amounts back that he did before. Let's talk about the presidential election and the Electoral College, shall we?

Discriminate? You're advocating distribution. Population is irrelevant; it's about how much money each region provides. If I'm in a region that produces a high amount of government revenue (aka taxes) then it should be expected that the money generated should be used in my district FIRST, and not some other area.

Noone isn't keeping anyone down. As far as the word "urban" goes, urban does not equal ghetto. Every urban area does not consist of a ghetto, not to mention there are more than merely black people that live in ghettoes. And ya know what? Some Actually do quite fine while having a high population. So you can use urban = ghetto in your wording, but don't use it in mine. "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. On discussing the states that "Bush took" you are missing a key understanding in your logic. Bush got electoral votes, and not many of them. The popular vote i.e. the actual people's voices, went to Gore. The electoral voters are supposed to go with the popular majority, but they are not required to by every state. some get fines, few jail time, but many no consequence. Also who do you think become electoral voters? We'll make it even more general... from what Socio-Economic class do you think the electoral college voters come from. ... interesting isn't it.
The popular vote this year meant a lot especially when you look at how many people actually came out to vote. 10% of the voters were black which is huge considering that only 12 % of americans are black!
And as for the corruptness going on in Florida (which is VERY, VERY REAL) it is going on everywhere. Florida is just under the mic right now because of the way the states turned in their votes. But this shit is happening everywhere. Listen to the radio stations... there is so much more than meets the eye here.

Wrong. Yours is flawed because you're looking at the national popular vote as a whole and not the popular vote of the states seperately. Name me one state that went against the grain (or will do so) of the popular count of their individual state.
(However, to put this into proper perspective, they DON'T have to go with the popular vote. And they don't meet in DC until January 6th. You got to feel sorry for Florida's electives, especially the Republican ones, because they will have tremendous pressure to change their vote to give the election to Al Gore. All in all, we WON'T be sure who will be president for certain until the 6th.)
>Also who do you think >become electoral voters? We'll >make it even more general... >from what Socio-Economic class do >you think the electoral college >voters come from. ... interesting >isn't it.
What does that got to do with it?
>The popular vote this year meant >a lot especially when you >look at how many people >actually came out to vote. > 10% of the voters >were black which is huge >considering that only 12 % >of americans are black!
Once again, your logic is flawed. 10% of anything is not necessarily a good thing. When black participation is like maybe 20% or so, then we can talk.
Not to mention, necessarily when the election turnout is high, that usually favors Democrats. However, Gore BARELY led in the popular vote, which is bad because all pundits are saying Gore got a whopping 90% of the black vote. That speaks volumes, I feel, that people want to cut down on expanding government.
>And as for the corruptness going >on in Florida (which is >VERY, VERY REAL) it is >going on everywhere. Florida >is just under the mic >right now because of the >way the states turned in >their votes. It's on both sides, but you don't hear about them. The extra ballots were found in counties that usually vote Democratic. The ballots in Palm Beach County were made by a county Democratic Party official (I've seen a replica of the ballot. You have to be a complete IDIOT to vote Buchanan when intending to vote for Gore.), not to mention the Democratic Party approved the ballot beforehand.
Either way, it's guaranteed that the Socialist Democratic Party will whine and complain and say Bush cheated, either illegally though some kind of voter fraud in Florida or through legally though the Electoral College (don't be surprised if the motion for a new constitutional amendment takes form in the near future.). All in all, everyone is going to believe what they want to believe.

I never said Hillary was stupid. Obviously she can't be too dumb, to be able to brainwash people in New York into voting for her. Now New Yorkers, that's another issue alltogether. They obviously fell for the biggest scam in history. Let's be real; Hillary only got the nod because she's the first lady, and the media hypes her up to be more than what she is. They are going to make her the Democrat's crowning jewel when she gets in the Senate, preparing for a presidential run in 04. When that happens, god help us all.

You are hilarious, man. Are you honestly an okayplayer?
By the way I've seen the questionable ballots and I can see where there was confusion, especially when you're talking about older people. If you've been doing something a certain way for years, then all of sudden there is a change, especially at an important time like this you have to question it.
Now, to something I really didn't like.
I would like to focus in on a comment you made regarding Bush appointing Colin Powell, as well as other comments you've made about the word "urban". Firs I don't like your overall tone, but secondly there seems to be some racial undertone in your comments, which I really don't like. If I'm wrong, please let me know.
P.S. I'm from New York and I was also a little disappointed about Hillary winning, only because it would've been a whole lot more fun watching her kick the snot out of Guilliani.

Oh please. If you can't tell that an ARROW means PUNCH HERE, then you don't need to be voting. Voting is more than simply registering and getting in line to hide behind a box and push buttons, it's about having the intelligence to make accurate decisions about the people you are voting for, or in some cases against. I'll cut the double punchers some slack, but the ones that voted Buchanan while intended for Gore are a bunch of morons. Once again, typical that leftists would fugg up something so simple.

You don't like something I said? Well join the socialist crowd to the left, buddy.
I don't understand what you want me to elaborate as far as the word "urban" goes, but it was a given that Bush wanted Colin Powell as Secretary of State. Hell, Powell is the most powerful man in Washington, and could have became president in either the 96 or the 2000 elections. I expect Powell, along with Condoleeza Rice, who might get the Secretary of Defense nod, and Powell's son, who should be FCC Commissioner, to be key voices in a Bush administration.
>P.S. I'm from New York >and I was also a >little disappointed about Hillary winning, >only because it would've been >a whole lot more fun >watching her kick the snot >out of Guilliani.
Blah. It just goes to show that elections shouldn't be focused on highly populated areas. If you New Yorkers actually represented the kind of voter that's in the rest of America, then this country is doomed. Hillary Clinton simply used that Senate seat to make a run for the White House either in 04 or 08, pending if Gore pulls this one out. The liberal press is going to give her so much attention it's silly. She'll only go one term, if that much. Congratulations in allowing your state to be a doorstep on her return to power. I'm sure the other states are envious.

Morons? Only if they REALLY intended to vote for Buchanan.

And where are you from again? I like your optimism but I don't think that Colin Powell would've been elected President. And I'm a black man, who longs for the day there will be a black president. He has alot of Democrat in him, and he wouldn't get past the Republican Primary.
You still have people defending Confederate Flag, there was a state that just Tuesday lifted a ban on "inter-racial dating", you have people defending Bob Jones University and you can honestly believe that the Jesse Helms and Strom Thurman voters of the South will vote for Colin Powell???

Please. Powell would have done way better than McCain in the primaries. In fact, he could probably have ran on the Democratic ticket. Powell appeals to both sides of the isle because he's in truth a moderate Democrat, but he's in the Republican Party because his strong views on foreign policy and military advancement, something the Democrats are weak on. Other than that, he would have beaten Gore and Bush easily. Only Clinton would have stood a chance to beat him back in 96, but now Clinton doesn't stand a chance. You'll hear a louder call for him to run in 08 if Bush wins this year.
>You still have people defending Confederate >Flag, there was a state >that just Tuesday lifted a >ban on "inter-racial dating", >you have people defending Bob >Jones University and you can >honestly believe that the Jesse >Helms and Strom Thurman voters >of the South will vote >for Colin Powell???
Powell wouldn't have to. He'd take a decent percentage of the South because the South is moving Republican as the days go by. There is no doubt he'll take a high percentage of the black vote. War heroes and military men have always done well in presidential races, and although the primaries might give Powell a little trouble in the South, I wouldn't expect it to anywhere else.

More smug statements from a guy that simply is turning out to seem like a real asshole. There is NO, I repeat, NO, requirement for "intelligence" in the right of enfranchisement in the Constitution! Adults of marginal mental capacity are given the right to vote (I have personally registered people with serious learning defects, and others who were slightly mentally retarded, and illiterate individuals), and that's a GREAT thing, because they can protect their interests. If we start making comments that citizens with diminished mental abilities should not be enfranchised, then we put ourselves in a horrible presumptuous position of having to decide who is "fit" or "unfit" to have a basic Constitutional right, and that ish is eerily reminiscent of some slavery, "3/5 of a man" shit.
And for you to call a whole group of interested voting citizens(possibly as high as 19,000) "morons" because they may have ended up voting in a way they did not intend is just SAD on your part. Intent is the cornerstone of almost every law on the books, and Intent in voting MUST be of the UTMOST concern if we are going to preserve the integrity and faith in the system of enfranchisement, or else we open the door to tricanery in balloting and fraud.
I have read some of your claims before, some are on point, most are outlandish (the naming of yourself as "Expertise", I hope for your sake, was tongue-in-cheek), but I notice you must always resort to some "Democrats/Gore = Bad" generalized statement. Where is the "expertise" or intelligent thought in taunting those whom you don't share their political views by making dismissive comments about their integrity or intelligence?
On a personal note, I recall horror stories that my family in Louisiana (swamp cajun creoles) would tell me about how my only somewhat literate great-grandfather, once given the right to vote as a Black man, was turned away from the polls, then not given privacy when he cast his vote, then given a ballot that was not easy for him to decipher so he never was quite sure he voted the way he intended, all over several elections well into the 70s. Those were tricks of the trade back in the day to keep Black people from swinging the votes in Southern counties. I think the methods of prevention of enfranchisement, nowadays, although far more covert than the examples I gave about my great-granddaddy, are still present.
Those voters in Palm County are NOT gonna take this shit lying down.... if you've seen the ethnic composition of the voters there, they are overwhelmingly White, and you know how White folks are when they feel like THEIR rights have been trampled on! They are going to HAVE to be addressed.

i get so pissed at people blaming nader for this shit. if people think nader is the best candidate than LET THEM VOTE FOR HIM. i monly 17 so i wasnt able to vote this time, but i mos def wouldve voted for nader. i like his position on many issues and he seems like a good guy. hes very much against the corrupt filled political world. as a matter of fact i think the people who voted for gore wasted THEIR vote. why vote for the lesser of two evils when u can get the best of everything?

Actually it was 10 pm Eastern. I know because I had just finished watching Scott Steiner kickin ass on Nitro and turned over to CNN and they had just gotten the opinion in their hands.
I kinda feel sorry for Al Gore. I mean he doesn't have shyt else to do, and will soon fade out of public eyesight. He doesn't have law experience, nor does he have a public office to fall back on, and there's no way in hell he'll ever get another one in Tennessee. Simply put, he's screwed. I guess he'll surface somewhere as a professor at some liberal arts institution, but that's about it.
Next target: Hillary Rodham Clinton. I'mma have to pull out the big guns on that socialist.
"In general the art of government consists in taking as much money as possible from one class of citizens to give to the other." -Voltaire
"The assumption that spending more of the taxpayer's money will make things better has survived all kinds of evidence that it has made things worse. The black family- which survived slavery, discrimination, poverty, wars and depressions- began to come apart as the federal government moved in with its well-financed programs to "help." - Thomas Sowell
"Life is insensitive, and the truth can be highly offensive. To hide from either is to hide from the reality of life. Take pride in the fact that I am an equal opportunity offender. You today, someone else tomorrow. You have no constitutional right not to be offended." - Neal Boortz
Some of you still think America's a democracy. Lemme break it down for ya...
* Democracy: Three wolves and a sheep vote on the dinner menu. * Democratically Elected Republic: Three wolves and 2 sheep vote on which sheep's for dinner. * Constitutional Republic: The eating of mutton is forbidden by law, and the sheep are armed.
The United States is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC. Not a democracy.

Who are you? Are you for real? Do you listen to Neal Boortz everyday? What do you mean by the "big guns"? Why is it your duty to "get" Hillary Clinton?
I can't believe that you are proud to regurgitate something some crazy white man says!

>Who are you?
Expertise
Are you for >real?
I guess
>Do you listen to Neal Boortz >everyday?
Nope. I can't. Although he is based right here in Atlanta, I have work and school to contend with. However, I do read his website.... http://boortz.com Fascinating information. Check it out sometime.
>What do you mean by the >"big guns"? Why is it >your duty to "get" Hillary Clinton?
Because....Hillary can spin information almost better than Slick Willie! Hell, Al Gore couldn't light a candle next to Hillary. You see how she made New York fall for her shyt? The woman is power-hungry, and will do everything she can to get back in the White House. If she succeeds, the US will become a socialist state. Guaranteed.
>I can't believe that you are >proud to regurgitate something >some crazy white man says!
I only "regurgitate" truth. It doesn't matter where it comes from. I think you should read the last quote at the bottom....

I know who Neal Boortz is. I've even been to his web page. You should like one of his followers. Everything you write is almost like it came out of his mouth. I was just worried that you might be listening a little too much. I'm in Atlanta too and I listen to him when I can stomach it just to keep on top of what the "good" white folks are thinking about.
Your fascination with Hillary is also classic boortz.

the only power hungry person trying to be in politics is Expertise.
Stop trying to draw attention to yourself.
Embrace the fact that you are a marginalized nut, and move on.
Stop wasting your time online where it's easy to try to defend yourself. Get out the damn house.
