255
Pens lost game 1 vs TB last year at home too
May 14th 2017

Not even a question Fleury starts
May 19th 2017
281
LOL and minutes later Murray named the starter
May 19th 2017

May 19th 2017
283
Fluery stepped up but he was the backup for a reason
May 19th 2017
285
Pens have scored 2 or less in 6 straight games

As bad as the Oilers have been, they still had Gretzky in his prime, 5(?) cups in the 80s...and now they have soon to be the greatest player on the planet... but you want to give them a sympathy cheer?? smh...

I feel bad for some Canadian hockey fans. Watching US teams win every year, and franchise after franchise get moved south of the border.

Fuck Bettman, basically.

In some ways thinking about the playoffs makes me realize most if not all the teams are flawed, especially when factoring in who is limping around (and in some cases who is out). But on the flip side I have seen almost all these teams turn in great performances lately and the matchups are pretty good.

I'll come back with picks and thoughts later.

I can't see the Penguins doing it without Letang at all and without Malkin at 100%. They should be able to beat Columbus but not without taking some bumps and bruises. I think the Caps are going to have their 2003 Spurs moment where they smell blood in the water and take it to the Pens in Round 2.

In response to Reply # 0

Toronto / Washington

A lot of people are picking this series to be close or something. I guess it's Washington's reputation and the newness of Toronto. Washington is a much, much better team. The Leafs have talent and very good coaching, that is why I think it will be a short series of close games (think 2014 Stanley Cup Final, maybe less overtime action though). Like four real close games and one beatdown maybe. The Caps are fucking stacked. The Leafs don't have much of a defense and most of their players can't order a beer in the U.S. The Caps have made 10 straight postseasons, the Leafs have made one in 10 years (actually 11). I think Babcock's brilliance is the only thing that won't let it get away from them. Instead of breaking down for whole games, it'll be for five or ten minute stretches. But it will happen.

Columbus / Pittsburgh

The Penguins have a lot of injuries but guys are slowly getting back, apart from Letang who is probably their second most important player after Crosby. Fortunately for them Columbus backed into the playoffs and generally underwhelmed after the All-Star break. This is going to be a competitive series but the Penguins are the better team, plus they have a chance to improve as the series progresses. Getting Werenski back should help the Columbus PP but not enough. Look at their splits, guys like Atkinson and Foligno were definitely worse after the break. They won't be able to score enough to win, though they will probably slow Pittsburgh down enough to make it a six or maybe even a seven game series.

Montreal / Rangers

In a way I feel the least strongly about the winner of this series so instead of equivocating I will make a bold, overcompensating prediction with unwarranted specificity and low probability. I think the Rangers will win the series in six or possibly seven games after Montreal takes a 2-0 lead and they make a goalie change. One of these series is going to swing a goalie change and it might be this one or Chicago if Nashville comes out hot. So Montreal takes the first two at Le Centre Bell, where Lundqvist has been terrible (and it was pretty saucy overall down the stretch). Then they go to Raanta and he shuts it down. Keeping Montreal off the board is not hard. Basically Montreal has the edge in goal but they need Price to be great, the Rangers just need their goaltending to be above average to good. Of course the Rangers offense has had tendencies to blow up in one direction or the other, so disregarding my not that likely scenario, the series might just hinge on which team shows up. I like how Kreider, Zucs, Hayes and some of their other guys are playing, but Nash was hurt by the compressed schedule and Grabner is cold as fuck. He holds the most misleading "leading scorer" title in the playoffs, and it's not close.

Ottawa / Boston

Ottawa had their number but most of the games were tight. Ottawa losses aside, the Bruins played well down the stretch. No Krug, no Carlo to start the series. I am thinking no Krug at all. Ottawa's defense is banged up but they should have all their guys, with the possible exception of Methot. Ottawa swept the series (Montreal did the same to the Rangers) but here I am a little more confident picking against them. Special teams are not good. You can have a weak PP or maybe get away with letting a couple in on the power play, but not both. Ottawa needs to keep the game 5on5 because Boston is strong in both areas. They also got better 5on5 and have more experience. I like Boston to win out over seven games but it should be a very tight series. I love Guy Boucher, I think he would get my vote for the Jack Adams. Probably Babcock will get it though.

Anaheim / Calgary

Calgary has been terrible in Anaheim and the Ducks have home ice. Ostensibly this is a close matchup but Anaheim beat them pretty solid during the season, too. The Ducks are the hottest team in the West and they have several players who are rolling (Getzlaf, Eaves, et al). Gibson looks very good and Bernier was the best No. 2 down the stretch. The Flames have a handful of really good players and they are ballsy. They also had a real hot stretch through February and March; Elliott was on point. I just think the Ducks have more going on and I also think Carlyle is a better coach than Glen Gulutzzzzzzzzzan. Lindholm is back, Fowler is not and he was injured against the Flames. This could be a long series though and it has the best potential for "old-time hockey," or, in layman's term, 20 guys punching 20 other guys in the face. These are two of the fightingest teams in the league, they are divisional rivals and there is bad blood from the last meeting.

Edmonton / San Jose

San Jose has a deeper, more experienced team but they also have some guys limping around. To go deep last year, send guys to the World Cup and then play a compressed schedule, wow, that's a lot to ask. I think the same of Pittsburgh, but they have a potentially favorable first-round matchup. The Sharks do not. The Oilers have the best first line in the West and maybe the entire league. McDavid is the best offensive player in the league, Draisaitl is explosive in his own right and Maroon is a surprisingly good player in today's NHL. He is really good and stopping pucks and starting possessions/cycles. He also goes to the net and stops, plus he holds his ground well. They aren't a one-line team though, their second line is starting to cook. Eberle, Lucic and the Nuge will have to be good, keeping the puck away from Burns and relieving some pressure on that top line by scoring a little. Vlasic and Braun have to be *great* for San Jose. I just didn't like the way San Jose finished the season at all. On the flip side, Edmonton is going pretty strong. They also have good goaltending. I don't think their defense is good enough to win it all but I like them in this round.

Chicago / Nashville

This could be a very fun series. The Predators are probably the most wildly inconsistent team in the playoffs, which is kind of intriguing in the context of a seven-game series. This could be a very high-scoring series, lots of firepower. Nashville opens it up and if they have a lead then Chicago will be forced to do the same. A problem for Nashville is that they are pretty weak on the road and obviously do not have home ice here. Rinne is going to have to be the best goalie in the round for them to win. I like Chicago in six games with plenty of goals and highlights. Nashville has a very active defense, which is big because scoring down low against Chicago is not easy. The Hawks top six should be able to feast on Nashville, who has an exciting defense but not a real gritty one.

Minnesota / St Louis

The Wild seem to have gotten it together in the last half a dozen games but the Blues have been consistently sold down the stretch. Minnesota should definitely win this series, consider the depth they have everywhere but in goal, which isn't important during the playoffs. The Blues have been a team built for the regular season for years now and the sweeping changes they made didn't change that, they just made them less talented. I wouldn't be shocked if the Wild blow it but it would be a choke job; they have a very solid team all the way through. I am more interested to see what kind of momentum they come out with to see if they can beat Chicago in the next round.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

what's the Caps' weakness besides, you know... the whole choking thing.

This is about as complete a team as you see in the NHL, imo. No HOF defender like Keith/Doughty... Letang? But still.

Alzner and Orpik kinda suck, but they wouldn't destroy a strong team.

Apart from that they might be the first time in Anaheim in 07 or maybe Detroit in 08 that was so good that you could peg them from the start.

Their overall defensive depth is better than those teams have.

They definitely have the best team on paper and not in a way that they have in years past when they flopped. Last year I knew the Penguins would beat them, this year I do not think so at all.

More like the Blues stint for Hitch than the Blue Jackets stint.

I think Travis Green is the next coach to get hired, probably in Florida. Vancouver would be smart to hire him but let's face it that is a dead-end job. If he has another offer, he will probably take it. I wonder what other vacancies will pop open soon. I thought probably Winnipeg and New Jersey. I think Sutter would be a good fit for Winnipeg.

The Blues had their goalie steal a game. If the Wild play four more games at any point in the series like that, they win the series.

Montreal has had a hard time scoring but Price was sharp and they bottled up the Rangers speed a bit. That series is a coin flip.

The Oilers definitely fell apart as the game went on but we'll see how they adjust. The Sharks were definitely the better team overall thanks to a kickass third period and they took it to them in OT. I still think that series could go either way.

Boston I expect to beat Ottawa but tonight's game showed it should be a long series or at least a bunch of close games. Nice to see Bobby Ryan score; he has had a tough year.

They just smothered their defense. That third defense pairing is not very good. They need someone who can move the puck better than Gryba. Nurse was rushed IMO, needed more time in the minors, but I don't think they have one good replacement, let alone two. He just needs to play better.

I thought the Oilers second line played well yesterday, some of their supporting guys in the bottom six were adequate or better. Defense was decent. If they don't get production from that top line, they aren't going to win. The Sharks were all over McDavid, a guy on him and another over the top with a third guy sometimes supporting. Draisaitl needs to get it in gear, he can make plays solo and has explosiveness. If he doesn't get it going, McDavid is going to be suffocated and that line won't score. Another thing they could consider doing is moving McDavid to a wing, that would complicate what SJ did last night and give him more opportunities to create space and get to the net.

This series is super tight, I mean how Minnesota did win one of those two games is beyond me. Great series, I thought this and the NYR-Mon were the two most even matchups

In response to Reply # 0

Maple Leafs came out in Pd 1 and straight punched the Caps in the mouth. Caps eventually recovered and worked hard for the win.

Anderson had some ridiculous glove saves all game, plus the sprawling pinwheel save on Burakovsky early in OT. Then Tom Wilson just put it in the perfect spot to end it.

Maple Leafs really shut down the Caps outlet passes and zone exits and it limited the Caps attack all night. The few times the Caps got good exits it usually led to a good offensive possession.

that's just a terrible angle to allow a short-side goal from. not blaming andersen for the loss, he played very well overall, but yeah that's a bad goal. he has to prove he can come up big in the biggest moments. he definitely played worse from games 5-7 against chicago than he did in the previous 13 games or whatever it was in the 2015 playoffs.

anyway i am not surprised, like i said at the start i expect mostly games like this. very close throughout, caps win at the end. they are facing a talented albeit inexperienced team and the best coach in the business.

Hank is in vintage form. That Plekanec goal was a beauty. VERY patient approach there. My dad was like "shoot the goddamn puck!" and I said wait for it ... wait for it ... and then they got the puck to the right wing side I knew something was going to happen. Kind of a shitty play by Holden there. He couldn't clear Plekanec out, ended up breaking his stick with his last attempt and then there wasn't much he could do to take away his position or his stick. Basically he could just nudge him like a bitch.

Kassian was just a big hit, maybe in some really protective lower-level league it was a suspension but I can't see it here. He played an awesome game, too.

Calvert kind of lost his shit at the end there. I think he will get suspended mainly because his stick broke. In the end it was a feud between two pretty insignificant players and that series is looking like a short one so who cares?

And it's got alot to do with coaching. They've outplayed the caps (I'd peg it at 4 periods to 2). I don't think we'll see the Caps win in Toronto. Babcock is already exploiting matchups. When he has home-ice advantage that will be amplified. I think there's a good chance the next two games in Toronto aren't even close. I'm thinking 4 to 1 type scorelines.

I've only skimmed the other series...but I think the Pens are going to repeat.

#fancystats have the Caps up 4 periods to 2, with two even periods. That's what my lying eyes have more or less seen. The two even periods were both OT periods last night in which the Caps were the better team with more high percentage chances.

http://www.naturalstattrick.com/game.php?season=20162017&game=30131

http://naturalstattrick.com/game.php?season=20162017&game=30132#

In OT Ovi got it past Anderson twice and both times it squeaked through his pads just wide. Then JC74 did the same exact thing. That's just puck luck. Two Leafs goals came when a Caps defender lost a stick.

**All that being said, Leafs are playing great** and Trotz is getting miserably outcoached. Slow defenders like Alzner are killing the Caps against Toronto's speed. But I'm not fatalistic.... yet.

And as a Caps fan, I know fatalistic.

The same way I picked Pittsburgh because they were the best team in the last 20 games of the season, I would argue that Anaheim was that this year.

I don't think Washington will lose to Toronto. So far the series has gone roughly how I figured. Almost all close games. Caps still have more players and more skill. Leafs just lost another D also. I would be fucking shocked if the Caps ended up losing the series, but I am not at all surprised that it's close.

In response to Reply # 0

Big win tonight in San Jose. Very well-played game, neither team was giving much. Two good coaches and two good teams. I don't get why people are surprised, Edmonton came into the playoffs playing well. The Sharks need Pavelski and Vlasic to pick it up because their other stars are either operating a low capacity or getting keyed on big time. Edmonton seems pretty determined not to let Burns beat them. Pavelski is a guy who does his thing in a way that's hard to really plan against. Justin Williams is like that, too, and that's why they are both good playoff players. This isn't like the Minnesota series where they are hitting a hot goalie. It's a very tight playing surface out there going both ways, so he's gotta find a way to get to the net and tip the pucks that they do manage to get there.

This series proves something I have always thought. If you dominate a team, you might be hot while they're flat. But if you can continue to beat a team with half-assed to average play, then you're definitely better than they are.

The total fucking breakdown by all five Caps skaters on the GTG yesterday is everything that's wrong with how they're playing.

Up 3-1, dick a 5-on-3 (Shattenkirk missing the net three times including a wide open net), lose the game.

And Trotz's inability to adjust for anything or play Ovechkin more than 15 (!) minutes.

There is no tomorrow for this group, this is the best team they have ever had and it's the best team they are ever going to have. If they fuck this up, they will never win the Cup. There's not like some second chance bubbling up underneath, there isn't some big window. This is it. They knew that and that's why they paid a lot to rent Shattenkirk. Obviously a lot of teams are having disappointing first rounds but there is no reason to believe that Chicago and Minnesota can't be as good or better next year. The Caps, it's pretty much impossible since they will lose key players to free agency.

This was a game where they trailed 3-0, for openers. They were perfectly capable of losing it for themselves.

The play itself, Ryan has stick and he gives kind of an awkward shot there. Could it have been elbowing? Yes. Did he clock him with it? No, it wasn't a big enough to deal even phase anyone. The retaliation gets seen and when you throw a punch, it definitely gets seen.

Obviously they could have killed the penalty, too. They make a bad change there and give two skilled players a lot of room and time to do their thing.

Ottawa was the better team yesterday. Game 4 is big for Boston; I still think this goes the distance.

It should have been matching minors but "he comes in hard" and acting like this was a Macho Man flying elbow aren't really right there. They missed one but the second penalty was legit and the Bruins had the same opportunity to kill it as every other team does, which 85% of the time results in nothing happening.

In response to Reply # 70

by the rule book, by anything, just so clearly a garbage call.

Backstrom was shoved into the goalie, and the goalie grabbed Backstrom to maintain contact. And Backstrom barely touched the goalie and quite clearly didn't affect the (non) save.

Such garbage.

It''s idiotic that a ref goes over to the booth and reviews his own call. There's nearly no incentive to tell the hockey world you just dicked a call.

You could look at their season on a macro level and think WTF? They were a bad road team, they were really inconsistent and they had the worst record of the eight teams in the West that qualified.

But if toss out a couple crappy stretches they were a lot better, that food poisoning outbreak and some other injuries hurt them. In November Rinne was lights out and then around New Year's they were good again, at times down the stretch, too. They kept showing flashes of what they could be and that was a deep team that didn't rely on any one guy or one line or one pairing.

You look at their team, they don't have any point-per-game guys but they have guys who are above-average scorers for their role through much of their lineup. Even some of their muscle like Watson can chip in a little, along with other guys more or less in checking roles (e.g. Fisher, Wilson).

This is the kind of potential they showed at their best during the year and then some. Subban is playing simple and it is very effective. Their other D are all hustling and they have good defensive forwards to begin with. Great structure here and Rinne was saving everything he could see. He has been very streaky in recent years but when he gets hot he is still very much an elite goaltender.

I think the Blues are in trouble against these guys. They played that first-round series like a team no one wants to face. Kind of reminds me of the Kings when they were the team no one wanted to play, but honestly these guys dominated the fuck out of Chicago while the Kings, relatively speaking, squeaked past Vancouver that year.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

They have some guys who are overlooked for sure, Hyman is a player and doesn't get attention because he doesn't score a ton of points like their other high profile young guys. Kadri has embraced his role and is very good at it. Andersen is still not a clutch goalie though. Murray and Fleury have each won Cups as No. 1 goalies. Firepower for Washington hasn't even woken up yet and they are still winning against a team playing a little over its head. I expect the Caps to close it out in the next game, another nail-biter. You don't think the people in Toronto are not going to get the pleasure of some soul-crushing loss in person?

Caps are starting to pull away now. Don't think this will go 7. Marner has been underwhelming after such a good season. I still don't understand why Babcock doesn't try playing Marner with Matthews. It seems like a petty stubborn thing. It's so obvious.

He is going to be an excellent player, probably like a b or b+ grade Pat Kane. He is not there physically yet, like he's definitely behind Laine (who will be an animal) in that regard. But he is a ballsy player with a lot of skill, I think he can be more of a goal-scorer than he was this year.

I won't guarantee a Washington victory in Game 6 but I feel it. Game 4 felt like a point where the Caps got their feet under them in the series, before that game (and also during it) they couldn't string together one level of play. But they seemed to be figuring things out and Game 5, while close, was probably their best start-to-finish game of the series.

The Leafs are for real and the Oilers are even more for real since they don't have as many kids and the one they had is the best. Boyle was a good start toward pushing toward something immediate, let's see who else they get to bring this group along.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

i have a boudreau-esque resistance to fancy stats but i can tell you that they had the puck for most of the series. you put up 52 shots and get *one* goal in game 1, 42 in game 3 and get *one* goal again ... with fewer shots but great chances in game 2 (again *one* goal) then you are pretty screwed. they ran into a hot goalie and an adequate team that wasn't that much worse than them on an even day.

these guys will be good again next year.

I don't mean it in a condescending way, but I feel like this is one of the last playoff matchups left that the NHL can really try to hype and that people still talk about Sid vs Ovi like it's Magic vs Bird, but do fans still see it that way?

Obviously pens fans respect Ovi for being great, but at this point 2 cups in for Sid including going through the Caps to get it last year it feels more like the pressure is about winning because that's just what Pens fans expect, than the pressure of beating a big rival.

I know people hate Crosby outside of the city, but is this still like a big rivalry to prove who the best player is for the team and fans? Like if the Caps win this do they feel they struck a major rivlary win or at this point is it just we need a cup and nothing matters territory?

In response to Reply # 93

All along you know Shang Tsung is even harder than Goro, but Goro still fucks you up as if he were his own boss.

No matter, to beat Mortal Kombat you inevitably have to go through both Goro and Shang Tsung.

To date, we can't even get past Goro. And, again, one way or another if the Caps are ever going to the Stanley Cup they will have to get through Pittsburgh at some point along their journey.

So the mood is mixed. There's the "these guys AGAIN" part of it of course. But there's also the knowing that beating this team en route to a Cup win is unavoidable; whether it be last year, this year, or at any point the Caps will eventually have to beat big brother to grow up.

Caps fans are 1 part "fuck, the Pens" and 1 part "FUCK THE PENS!"

Very much.

It is only amplified by losing to them in recent years.

Edit: as for Sid v Ovechkin I think most reasonable Caps fans know Sid is probably a better player, especially with the 2 cups and being a center, which is a more crucial position.

For Pens fans it's like ah great here come the caps. They treat us like the title is on the line and if they ever win we'll never hear the end of it.

But when you're on the other side of that of course your hate for the other team amplifies by 10X every time they win.

The Crosby vs Ovi argument was probably the one I was more interested in, like I feel that the argument kind of died but people just want it to keep going. A cup win and great showing in this series would obviously rekindle it.

Second round I will go

Anaheim in six, they have more weapons than the Oilers and I think Carlyle is handling the team very well. Oilers are more than just McDavid but will need a *huge* series from him. Ducks have some things to clean up from Round 1, namely their PK. But the Oilers aren't going to get two game-winners from Kassian again and also have a lot to clean up, including taking penalties and handling some bigger guys down low. Getzlaf is playing the best hockey of his career right now. Ducks didn't perform great in the circle in Round 1 but that was a small sample; much better faceoff team than the Oilers. This should be a fun series but I feel confident in the Ducks.

Nashville in five. They are rolling. The Blues didn't really impress me, overall I thought they were outplayed by Minnesota and were bailed out by great goaltending. Too bad Nashville is getting that right now also. Barring a very abrupt about-face, Nashville should win this series and without too much difficulty.

Ottawa in seven. The Rangers have more on paper but the Sens are playing better. Getting the whole Ranger team to roll at once has been difficult, nearly impossible it seems. This is a very even matchup but I just like the way the Sens are playing right now. Karlsson on a trashed foot is better than other defensemen are at 100%.

Reluctantly I am going to stick with Washington. I had Pittsburgh all the way last year and backed off it at the end, which was a mistake. So I will stick with Washington, who I thought would win this series going into the playoffs. Seven games though, it is going to be very tight.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

If their big guns fire (Sid/Gino/Kessel) then their bottom six can just do bottom six things. Cycle the puck, be physical, protect the puck and get the hell off the ice.

I'm also not worried about either goalie melting down. I think Holtby could be a difference-maker, Fleury will give the Pens a chance but not outright steal anything.

Hard to key on one thing here. If I had to pick something I would say defensive scoring for the Caps. If Shattenkirk and Carlson have a big series, then they should win for sure.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

last night he was sharp, he was particularly good protecting the 3-2 lead.

We got very complacent and stopped playing aggressively. We were dominating the first two periods and seemed to just play to hold on, which you can't do.

My source on this is my mom back in Nashville with no ties to the team, so no idea its validity, but word is going around that Kevin Fiala's injury going hard into the boards was a femoral fracture that ruptured his artery. I questioned that, looked like a knee issue with how he hit.

Of course it is the NHL so it'll just be listed as a lower body.

Lots of things came down to earth, the goalies in your series and the Ducks play (first regulation loss since March 10). It coulda gone either way, lots of hit posts, streaky goaltending for both teams, etc. The bounces finally went against Anaheim which was due the way they lucked out at times in the Calgary series. The first Larsson goal was a mistake and a good play, the second was a mistake and lucky play. Edmonton giving up two goals in 2:44 to lose a lead hurt but like in the SJ series they bounced back. This is going to be a solid series. Watching McDavid in the playoffs show me he has room to improve, which is scary. He isn't physically mature and they have to dink around a lot to keep him from taking faceoffs. He is still creating all sorts of space for other guys and getting OK production. Teams have to start keying on him while he is still in his D zone, not sure I can think of another player like that.

On one hand the Ducks PK is dragging ass. Two more PPG against last night. On the other they have had some fluky ones. A broken stick on a 5on3 last night, the failed clear in Game 1 against Calgary, etc. It's a small sample size but they need to be better or, better still, stay out of the box. Their 5on5 play was real solid.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

they used to be about hanging onto the puck, now they are a counterattacking team. to play opposite styles with equal aplomb is pretty crazy. not sure if sullivan is a genius or just has very good players. edmonton plays a similar style, they invite your D into the play and then punish you going the other way. pens are really good at it, they sort of ropeadoped the first period. caps have played 40 great minutes and gotten nothing to show for it. fleury two GAA again but he played better than his stats show. he is on.

He was right about the broader culture of hockey and how the league fails to protects its stars and players in general. But I don't know that it applies here. Not really an intentional or dirty play. If he wanted to hurt him, he could have really lit him up there. Ovechkin's initial play is a bit much but nothing unusual, Niskanen is looking at the puck and raises his stick to what would have been Sid's shoulder but he's dropping down.

Did you read what Rob Rossi wrote? Jesus. I can't believe they published that.

It isn't meant to be. There's another level these other teams go to in the playoffs that the Caps never ascend to. They insist that they aren't haunted by failures of years past but they clearly are. Their tension is palpable when they go down early in a game, or when they blow a lead, or when they even fail to score on a power play.

This is who they are.

Since 2007 they've made the playoffs all but one year. Through all of those trips, they've failed to move past the second round. This is who they are, a fun to watch finesse team who racks up points in the regular season but who is intimated by the postseason.

It's over for this group. Probably been over.

came back tonight to tie it 2-2, came back last game to win in OT. Did it against the Leafs a couple times.

But they can't hold leads, or they can't get a lead to begin with.

The scoring has just not been good enough, and given that Ovi, Backstrom and Oshie are 3 of the top 4 scorers on the team in the playoffs, it's everyone else who is fucking up, from Kuzy to Bura to the 4th line.

It took a long time to recover from the idea that they should work hard to give up 50 fewer goals while scoring 100 fewer.

They have to make some changes now--likely losing Shattenkirk and Oshie, possibly Williams--but I don't think a super drastic change is the answer. Maybe consider making Backstrom the captain. Tweak some things with the open spots in the lineup, get a skating D to replace Shattenkirk and some two-way guys to replace the outgoing forwards, guys who can defend and make less money.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Taking 5 (!!!) offensive-zone penalties is a close second. That is some grade-A chokery.

If anyone sees Kuzy and Bura get consecutive shots on the fucking net, please come wake me up.

I stopped paying attention tonight after the own goal. You can see these Caps losses coming from a mile away.

No way he is healthy, he has too big of a concussion history.

Game 3 and 4 (despite a loss in 3) showed they don't need him to win this series.

Pens lose tonight but wrap it up at home in 6, then see how he is for the ECF.

because of concussions.

this is a guy with a long history. not only is his long-term health more important than one game, it's more important than one series or one season. not being cautious here is a big mistake. if this were his first one or even his first one in a while, OK. but this is a guy who has missed a couple hundred games in his career, almost all because of concussions. he just had one to start the season. you don't play game with that, especially when he is the guy who saved the franchise. the macho shit in hockey has its appeal and yeah playing when you're hurt is part of the game. but it has gone too far far too many times and concussions are a gray area to say the least.

playing him today is a mistake under any circumstances. this just happened. he needs more time to be evaluated given his history.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I seen way too many 3-1 series go 7 games.

Let's keep it real. Flurry has made some insane saves and can easily come back to earth. I don't want this going 6 games.

If Crosby is ready, play him.

Might fuck around and lose this series. 8 straight goals by the Caps these last 2 games.

this bum ass defense they are playing and a near total lack of a possession game was not a winning formula. i feel like if the caps were going to choke it was in game 5. today they had no real pressure on, not in game 7 it's pretty neutral in those terms but physically they are in better shape.

malkin is cooking at least.

sid coming back was a bad idea. he is not up to his own standards and he probably re-concussed himself today. talked to a veteran defenseman, guy who was a team captain and two-time cup winner who also had a couple bad concussions. he told me all the signs were there postgame. he hoped to be wrong but experience told him sid got his bell rung again. were two losses where he played at half speed worth it? bad decision, unbelievably bad decision, and one with no payoff.

They are going to throw their lines in a blender and stick with this dumb 7D setup. They are at home. They are facing elimination. They know that this isn't just their season but their era on the line.

The Pens have ZERO pressure on them here. The Caps have all of it on them and we know very well how they have handled high stakes.

once fowler scored i knew it was going to OT. what a rally. that is the kind of win that springs you onto bigger things.

that said this series has had NO carry over from game to game. i expect the oilers to force a seventh game

They have struggled against speed teams for years but overall they have managed the puck well and kept Edmonton's speed in check. Last night they didn't and they also had shitty goaltending. The game was over halfway through the first period.

I am mad at myself for falling into the ZOMG WTF CAPS!?! narrative

In a seven-game series, the better team comes out on top eventually.

The thing I see with Pittsburgh is every one of their D is over extended and that eventually was going to cost them. Tonight they really got it handed to them. Also no one can tell me Sid was ready. He is looking very pedestrian out there.

Malkin can eat a dick too. That bastard always looking to make some sensational pass or skate through 3 defenders. Shoot te fucking puck on the power play instead of holding it looking to thread a needle.

Did these fools really think Fluery could stop a million shots and win a series?

he was asked two questions in one, was he concerned and was sid tested. if i heard correctly he simply said "no." was he answering just the first question? just the second? both? it's ambiguous.

hard to say why sid would lie but like i said above i talked to a guy, former player who sustained some serious ones and studied the topic, who said he'd wager sid was concussed again.

i mean there is still some hateful little capsule inside me that says fuck it let him rot, but come on, this is one of the best players to ever play the game. i don't want to see him suffer because of irresponsible competitiveness.

Going down 3-1 gave them no room for error or no room for the Pens to steal a game.

Not enough adjustments from Trotz. No depth scoring. Braden Holtby didn't steal a single game. That's the series.

Sad thing is I don't even know what the huge difference was. Caps had great chances in first two periods especially. If there were one or two glaring fuckups it was Ovechkin missing the shot that just barely nicked Fleury's stick in an otherwise wide open net and then the 2nd Pens backhand goal by Holtby. Truthfully Holtby was sort of dogshit the whole playoffs but he's far from the only issue. I don't know what they do from here but fatigue of this team is surely setting in here in the Beltway region.

and Winnik dicking the breakaway.

Plus all the times the Caps had great set ups but the final pass was 6 inches off or the shooter missed the connection. MoJo, Williams and Backstrom's passes were off all night.

Ovi had a good shot on that one, but when the goalie's stick handle stops the puck, that's mostly bad luck.

Ovi wasn't good enough this series. But I'm also pretty sure he's injured as shit.

The biggest scape goats for me right now are Holtby (who at no point looked like a Vezina winner), Trotz (who is now 0-3 in the second round and was outcoached by Sullivan in nearly every game), and the bottom 6, who provided exactly jack shit.

Kuzy and Bura missed way too many good chances through the playoffs too, but at least they scored occasionally.

holtby had some bad games but he also had some good ones, probably enough good ones for them to win. seems obvious but you're not going to win with zero goals and they scored two in their other losses. how are you staring down ron hainsey, ian cole and all the other schlubs like 'well, we dunno what do to?'

The stars were not consistent and the supporting guys provided essentially nothing. In the losses they made just enough mistakes to wipe out what they did well and anything the Penguins did right was almost gravy.

I liked Backstrom's analysis of when they lost the series. Does it matter? Is there a distinction? They fucked up early and still managed to get to a decent position, only to fuck up again.

It was frustrating to watch. At least the Ducks got their shit together. Nice win.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 203

I know saying a goalie stole a game is cliche, but it reminded me of game 2 in that the Capitals deserved a goal or 2 in those first few minutes.

If they went up 1-0 or 2-0 early on the game would probably be over, they would play a whole different game, the Pens would have felt beat, the crowd would have been one of the wildest crowds in history probably.

But when the Pens weren't doing anything and looked lifeless, Fleury kept the game 0-0 and let them gain their composure have a more even 2nd half of the 1st period and then keep getting better from there.

There is no knowing how it would have ended if the Caps scored early, but Fleury made sure they didn't and you started to see those can we do it looks on their faces.

Frequently he carried the team until they could get the offense going.

Holtby generally didn't do the same, and/or the Caps offense never got going. Which to CC's point, when Ron Hainsey is a team's #1 D, is inexcusable.

They could easily have been deflated by the early fuckup but they hung with it and the last 35 or so minutes of the game they owned it. They gave Edmonton nothing. Very few second chances, one dangerous deflection and some medium-grade stuff. Just a controlled, steady, energetic game. They got pucks deep, they made Edmonton defend and they controlled the line change/match up game. Most of the time when Edmonton was looking to come up ice, they were also looking to get a change. McDavid tried to turn it on a few times but they didn't give him any space in the O-zone. I think he needs to get stronger and work more on a down low game, then he will be just completely unstoppable. The Oilers weren't able to generate any speed, their breakouts were weak and, ultimately, they started turning it over. Nice fore check, good pressure within good structure. I was very impressed, even though it wasn't sexy or lopsided, that was one of their best games all year.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

And do it without analysis, metrics or stats, it's pretty much the definition of narrative.

Ovechkin leads the team in Game 7 goals since he's been in the league.

I know blaming him makes sense to you and Jeremy Roenick, but thankfully there's smarter analysis out there.

In response to Reply # 221

I remember there was a study of cup winning teams as a function of the amount of Canadian players a team has in combination with their relative significance (are they in the top 4 d? Are they in the top 6 forwards?)

Might be oversimplifying...but there's no doubt that the Stanley cup means something different to Canadians and every year there's a Tom Wilson type that suddenly goes beast because he grew up dreaming about the playoffs.

Past few cup winners

Pittsburgh 2009:
http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/PIT/2009.html

Chicago roster 2010:
http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/CHI/2010.html

Boston 2011:
http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/BOS/2011.html

LA Kings 2012
http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/LAK/2012.html

That's alot of Canadian flags on those rosters.

Just look at Anaheim's cup winning team in 2007:
http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/ANA/2007.html

The ONLY team that wasn't heavily Canadian is the Red wings of 2008. And even then...they had more than the Caps did this year or years before.

Caps 2017:
http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/WSH/2017.html

The Canadian players they do have are mostly at the bottom of their roster. I don't have the effort to confirm this....but skimming through cup winner rosters...They'd probably be the 'least' Canadian team to EVER win the cup if they won this year. That's a pretty big statement.

Not sure I am buying this little Coach's Corner segment.

>Pittsburgh 2009:

Conn Smythe winner was a Russian.

>Chicago roster 2010:

Finnish goalie, American offensive star that scored the Cup-winner and balls-out defensemen from Sweden.

>Boston 2011:

American goalie that had a season and postseason for the ages and a Slovak captain who played beside a German guy to form an incredible shutdown pair that did a lot for them. Krejci, a Czech, was great for them also.

>LA Kings 2012
>http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/LAK/2012.html

American captain, American MVP/goaltender and their best player hailed from the hockey powerhouse that is Slovenia. Scuds and Greener were Americans, if anything what stands out to me is how many U.S. players played a prominent role with the Kings. The Devils also had a lot of Americans though obviously they had very prominent Canadians and some Euros as well.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Pointing out the Conn Smyth winner for the pens that is otherwise more than 50% Canadian doesn't refute the argument.

Of course...I'm speaking of a combination of the aggregate amount of Canadian players and they're relative worth.

Again....The 2017 Capitals would have been the LEAST Canadian to ever win the cup. By a measurement that combines total players and the weight of their roles. EVER.

Again. Here's the past Stanley cup winners:

http://www.hockey-reference.com/awards/stanley.html

Right click on each to see the nationality make-up of each team. Find ONE who is less Canadian that the 2017 Capitals. The closest you can come is Detroit. And they were an anomaly. Year after year....the teams with Canadian players win. It was no secret that this was basically Brian Burke's entire strategy with the Ducks. The post 2000 Kings did the same thing and got two cups out of it.

Make a list of the Canadian players on those teams you took acception to. Then make a list of Canadians on the Capitals 2017 team. Voila.
