UPDATE: So we've kind of slowed to a halt. If there are any posts you feel STRONGLY that we should get rid of, please post them below. Also, to Ryan, Wordman, and Kurly, if you want to look at Ricky's posts and get some quick ideas about what you'd like gone, go ahead and glance through soon please.

I'm gonna try to delete the ones I feel the committee agrees should be gone, and I'll make judgement calls based on individual requests. I probably won't get rid of ALL of the ones you recommended, Ricky, simply because our archives are comparatively small anyhow. I will try to get rid of a page or more, especially the pointless repeat/list posts. But it'll probably come down to judgement call for some of those.

So if anyone has any hardcore campaigning to do, please do it in the next 48 hours.

Thanks, Frank

*** ORIGINAL POST ***

I believe the people in this post are Ryan, Wordman, Kurly, and genius.switch (a.k.a. Ricky B). Thank you guys for agreeing to do this. I've asked a couple of others that I'm waiting to hear from. Also, if anyone searches and stumbles upon this post and is interested in joining in, welcome. I've basically got two goals with this post.

1. Discussing "archivability": i.e. what constitutes a post worthy of archival, what are the specific attributes of a post the mods do or do not archive.

2. Discussing the specific posts currently archived in detail: do they meet our list of attributes for archivable posts? Are these posts that can easily be repeated? Do they contain material held more eloquently in other archived posts on the same topic? Are these posts that are on a good topic that we should perhaps create a new post on the same subject to see if we can get better, more up-to-date responses, rendering the older one obsolete?

I'm in the process of moving all music related posts archived back when PTP was Reviews, but that should be done soon. I'd like to start talking about this as soon as possible.

Also, in the interest of keeping the masses who either haven't been here long enough to know what we're about or don't really feel like dedicating the time to reading all of these old archived posts, I've decided to hide this post from the public. If you could either bookmark this specific post, or (the long way) you might be able to find it via the search function, then please do that. But I'd probably do that right away, before you forget the link to this post, lol.

Thanks,
Frank

Here's just some thoughts I have on archivability.

1. Is this a post that can never truly be replicated, i.e. really valuable information, an epic poster fight, or just some really funny reply? If so, it should probably be archived.

2. Is there valuable information/discussion in this post that truly captures a moment of good in-depth analysis/conversation in PTP?

3. Is this post screamingly funny? Does it have a classic beef between posters that people will talk about for years?

Those are my big three requirements. Add on?
275717, This feels like the Breakfast Club. lol
Posted by genius.switch, Sun Apr-22-07 11:32 PM
And I can't help but feel like Anthony Michael Hall.

I think there are a couple kind of posts that should be chopped off first.

1. Repeat Posts
--stuff that's covered multiple times
2. Quote / List heavy posts w/out much dicsussions
--what's the point?
3. TV Show Season Posts
--i can't imagine too much rereading comes from a lot of them.
4. Impotent Reply-wise
--obviously, they offer little dicussion.
5. Prep Time
--i think there are a number of great comic posts, unfortunately they're the exception

Basically, as Frank said, archived posts should offer insightful discussion or something else that makes rereading them worthwile (jokes, information, etc.).

There are others that don't fit in those five categories, but we can get to them later.

Since I'm in a cutting-type mood, let me at least offer some of mine up for execution.

Keep the discussion - informative, fun read.
Get rid of number 2 - pointless
keep number 3 ("worst best film oscar ever") - If for no other reason than to see Frank Longo pissed. It's just fun reading stuff from folks who are passionate about their haterade.

It should also be noted that while I thought Crash was good (not great, not amazing, not better than DTRT, I just thought it was good), I definitely do not think it should have won best film.

I think a case can be made to keep TV show season posts (as they can't really be duplicated a la Frank's stipulation), but a lot of the discussion doesn't make sense out of context, i.e., months or years later they lose their flavor.

only reasons I could think to keep it are:
* Johnbook
* Janey
* Is a fun read.

But other than that, I say nay.
It also doesn't help that I was born in '82.

I was so happy this was archived!
Do you know how hard it is to find discussion on this film?
I find reading stuff on particular films in depth VERY interesting, and I always go back and read them.
I was more upset that I didn't find the post until it was in archives.
I don't necessarily know that it fits any of the requirements we set, but I like this post and - when my archives function was working - would read it every time I went 'archive fishing'*.

*'archive fishing' - 'bout 2, 3 times a year I'd go through the archives and read, or in most cases re-read posts. You know, if I had the time to kill.

I think it does merit re-reading.
I enjoy posts like this, posts that critically look at the industry as well as the films. I haven't found too many boards that intelligently (note: INTELLIGENTLY) discuss the film industry, so I think keeping posts like this is a good idea.

I'm not trying to save everything, you just started with ones I like. I promise to get the chopping block going any second now...

LOL no, not really. I'm gonna start making individual posts about posts I think should not be archived in a bit, and we'll just go into them, poke our head into that archived post, see if we want to keep it or not, say a short thing why (or don't if everyone's in agreement), and we'll move forward.

I just kind of want to start trimming it now. I have no real deadline.

The Pulp Fiction Post
http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=23&topic_id=1928&mesg_id=1928

Personally? I would keep the first two, if simply because the Orbit_Established blowups over Pulp Fiction are simply legendary. The first one having a great O_E vs. Damaja battle, the second having a great O_E vs. AFKAP battle. O_E's hatred of Pulp Fiction has been an institution of PTP for the last several years, and I really actually like both of these posts as evidence of such.

The last one is superfluous, has no true value that couldn't be repeated, and I think it should go.

Thoughts?
277562, RE: FIRST UP FOR DISCUSSION: Pulp Fiction posts.
Posted by genius.switch, Sun Apr-29-07 11:27 PM
Perhaps, this is where there might be some disagreement.

For the most part, the posts that break from discussion and become big ol' tangled messes of tangents and ad hominems are boring to me. It's alright to highlight someone being clowned or bickering back and forth in some really notable fashion, but I think if you try and carbonite a couple meager examples, it brings the worth of the whole lot down. Basically, you don't see every time WC and AFKAP go at each other in the Lesson being archived. That shit is rather common place and not all that exciting once it's been a minute or two after. And O_E's argued with anyone and everyone, so I don't think there's any special need to save these.

I think all three posts, and any that are being perserved simply because hand-slapping was involved, should go. I'm sure you, Frank, or whomever, might feel different, and that's cool, but I'm just stating where I side.
278560, I agree 100%. Cut that 3rd one.

WORST BEST PICTURE WINNER IN THE HISTORY OF OSCAR
http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=23&topic_id=37102&mesg_id=37102

This is gonna sound like nepotism, but I think the most archivable is the last one, my post. I think it was the apex of the anti-Crash movement, it has the strongest opinions of all 3 posts, and I personally just think it's pretty damn funny.

I'm torn on the first two. See, I feel the Crash reactions are somewhat symbolic of how PTP feels towards popular "meaningful" movies: at first they love it (the first post), then someone states how strongly they hated it (the second post, which I believe was the first really strong anti-Crash post), then the lovers of the film never show up anymore for fear of mockery and the hatred runs rampant (the last post).

In order of importance of archival, I'd say the last one, then the first one, then the middle one. The last one is the only one I REALLY think should be archived, but I also think it could be really great to have the first one archived too with all the love in it (especially ?uestlove's glowing heartfelt praise for it). The second one... after the original comment, which I think is hilarious and damn near legendary for how much it pissed off some people (who found it representative of the PTP style of reviewing films), there's not much else, so I'd probably be okay with losing that one.
277563, RE: NEXT UP FOR DISCUSSION: The Crash posts.

Okay, in hidsight, I think there probably should be something to note the "anti-Crash movement." That was, as you pointed out, a "memorable" time here. However, I think having a dicussion post archived, where discussion actually happened, isn't so bad. So maybe keep the first and the third and axe the middle child.

There's definitely some funny bits in there (Rjcc's legendary AD hate, the "My Name is Earl" comeback, The Damaja saying he thought The Contest and The Soup Nazi were "shit"), but I do feel like it's a bit superfluous in some manners.

In terms of archived posts to delete based on the repeat factor, that one would probably be near the end of my list of posts to axe... I dunno, it's still pretty goddamn funny. I'm torn over post #2.

In regards to the first two, there's MUCH more in-depth discussion in the second post that really gets down to the detailed nitty-gritty-- what worked, what didn't, what things mean, etc. However, the first does have some insightful things to say about the film and a rare ?uestlove in PTP appearance.

The third post was interesting and would be a very good companion piece to whichever of the first two posts we archive imo.

The final post-- can it.
279787, You know what . . .
Posted by genius.switch, Mon May-07-07 03:03 PM
The second one (Matrix Reloaded *SPOILERS ABOUND* thread) is probably the more archive-worthy because it goes deep into all sorts of possible theroies and interpretations of the movie. Looking at them again, I think we could keep just it and then Matrix Reloaded would be well represented (whereas if you had one in there, you'd be getting short-changed).

The third is interesting, as you say, but I don't know, the trilogy went belly up, so I'm less likely to wanna see a Revolutions post at all, especially a highly abstract one. Similar feeling about four.

Two can win.

I'd have no problem keeping both. The first is a must-keep, and unless there are multiple posts about the plight of black cinema and Bignick's criticisms of the way blacks are portrayed in popular movies, I'd say the second one has value too.
279793, I'm not a fan of the second

So why it should go:

It's a swipe, and the poster who swiped it and carried most of the early "dicussion" hadn't even seen the movie, thus negating most of what he said and swiped in the first place (from a purely argumentative POV). Beyond that, I'm willing to bet whatever great conclusions were arrived at about the state of black film are present in at least half a dozen other archived posts and in threads somewhat routinely on the active board.

The first actually addresses the movie by people who actually saw it. In fact, it then goes into the weaknesses / flaws of black movies just the same.

Swipes, IMO, aren't exactly archive-worthy, even though in this case Nick made some great points. I think the first was much more valuable in the long term.

KEEP BOTH POSTS.
Alot of good reviews that would take way too long to find, plus I thought the convo about the film good.
Can you believe I still haven't seen this movie?

My job just added some responsibilities that I have to handle (without adding to my 'fiscal' responsibilities - the punks). But I'm here, and I'm gonna be getting on it. Still having some trouble loading the archives, so I'll just click on the individual links in this post.
Y'all been putting in work! Sorry to play catch up!

I'd appreciate even MORE suggestions for what to cut. Ricky's links are phenomenally resourceful, for those looking to cosign posts to cut.

Thanks to everyone putting in work though, it really means a lot and will make this process a lot smoother.
