in San Francisco
on April 11.

Small screen is better than no screen, but if you can, do try to catch it large first.

But no movie theatre sex during this one, I warn you all.

while I don't usually remember the size of the screen per se, I often remember the environment -- and not having the distracting cats around or the distracting kitchen nearby is one benefit of seeing something in a theatre, but also I notice that how I respond to a film often depends quite subtley on the experience of having seen it. Because I focus better in movie theatres, I'm more likely to remember a film better if I see it on the larger screen, as well as get more out of the film on one viewing.

If that makes sense.

I see what you're saying...especially about remembering a movie more when you see it on a larger screen. But there have been a lot of times when I've felt more distracted in a movie theater than at home, depending on the audience. Like, at Bus 174, I had Snotty Nose Chick down at the end of my row (and I should've handed the bitch a tissue) and behind me was Loud Popcorn Munching Guy. The audience distraction factor got so bad for me at one point that I stopped seeing movies in theaters for probably a year. I don't have those particular kinds of distractions at home (and I turn the ringer off on my phone), but like Mynoriti said, at home sometimes it takes me several days to finish watching a movie.

But I do agree the Bus 174 should really be seen on a big screen.

janey, I need you to school me on movie theatre sex, for real. How do you do it without being totally obvious to other people? The most I've ever done is a movie theatre hand job, lol. ks

1. Sit in the back row.

2. Remember that the people who work in the movie theatre don't care, in fact, they find it amusing.

3. Remember janey's rule: Oral sex is sex.

I've never had intercourse (vaginal or anal) in a movie theatre.

Public restrooms are better for that.

A-ha! I was wondering how the hell you'd manage intercourse, unless maybe it was a theater with those high-backed seats and no arms between 'em. Oral sex I can definitely handle! ;-P

I agree with you completely. The last time I saw The Barbarian Invasions, I almost left because the audience was so fucking weird, laughing inappropriately, etc. I thought I wouldn't be able to concentrate on the movie. And in parts, it's true, I couldn't.

But I still cried harder at the end that time than I had the previous two times.

That movie. Damn. I just relate so deeply to so much going on there.

And I know what you mean about curling up in a fetal position after seeing Bus 174. I've seen it twice, and it stayed with me a good week or so afterwards, both times.

Goodbye, Lenin! and Eternal Sunshine. I think I want to see Ladykillers, but I figure it'll be around for awhile. Goodbye, Lenin! has already been here one week and I doubt it will be for three, so I need to catch that one this weekend for sure. ks

'Cause I was kinda thinking I'm trying to cram too many movies into one weekend. I should really use Sunday for catching up on my DVD rentals.

Hmm...well, thanks for the heads up! Oh, and btw--Thanks for being the first person to post about GreenCine here, 'cause I'm not sure if I'd have learned about it otherwise. I really love it! ks

I'm glad that's working out for you.

Yeah, Goodbye Lenin just didn't move me. It's like, I could see where they were coming from and nod sagely over the juxtaposition of the east/west germany culture clash and see that it's a commentary on how neither system lacks flaws or whatever, but grab me it didn't. I suspect that I would relate more closely were I europeen.

I saw Bus 174 in the most auspicious of settings.

The first time I saw it was during the SF film fest last year. Film festival audiences (at the smaller, less well known festivals, at least) tend to be very very good audience members. No bullshit. No babies. No cell phones. No seat kicking.

The second time I saw it was at a very small screening at a contemporary art museum here in SF. Great little screening room. Very respectful audience.

I also get to see a number of films through my movie club, which means smart and respectful audience, no trailers or other pre-screening bullshit, a fabulous moderator.

And then I also find that because of the kind of movies that I go see, I rarely have really horrible audience experiences. The people who go see films like Bus 174 turn off their cell phones because they don't want to hear anyone else's phone. They don't talk because they know talking bothers them. Etcetera.

But there's a bad apple in many barrels. I had to ask someone to put away his rattling plastic bag of food back a few weeks ago. But I did it nicely, and he nicely stopped making noise.

Yep, and it's always someone sitting in the middle of the damn row. Sit on the aisle, dammit!

> cell phones

Ugh, and even after they have some PSA telling people to turn them off, still one goes off! And I've had people in front of me (bored, I guess) pull out their cell phones and play games on them or checking text messages with the bright blue light glowing...wtf!?! That most recently happened to me at My Architect.

>babies(!!!)

There is actually a theatre here where people can reserve space in a crying room and watch the movie from there. More theatres need to get with that.

I caught the movie last weekend, when it was screening at the Hollywood Theater here in Portland (it had a short run for about a week). I was shocked at how empty the auditorium was for the Friday evening show (there were a total of about 7 patrons including my wife and myself). But, it impressive documentary - insightful political and social commentary coupled with this incredible footage of the actual events unfolding. Usually, a story like this is presented in a way that makes it possible to distance yourself from the socio-political problems that exist in this foreign country. But, to me, the issues raised within this movie seemed as socially and politically relevant to this country as they are to Brazil, and they really do a good job laying them out. It had an immediacy that made it quite powerful.

And, to my knowledge, there was no sex going on during the screeninig I attended (although the couple behind us was out of my view for most of the film, so I guess it is possible).

peace,
murph

I was thinking the same thing, lol. Although, I've told people I'm really glad I saw it and think it's important that others see it, I didn't think I wanted to see it ever again...but the advantage to watching it again at home is that I can curl up in the fetal position _while_ I watch instead of afterward, lol! ks

City of God is about street children, the violence and horror of their lives, and the causes of the violence and horror. Bus 174 is about a bus hijacking by someone who was a street child, and it looks deeply into the societal breakdowns that result in this kind of violent response to hopelessness.

They're actually the same story in many ways, just told very differently.

First. Please do NOT put spoilers in a post without warning people. Good christ, how often should we say this?

Second.

SPOILERS FOLLOW ----

Are you sure he killed that girl?

I think if you watch it again you'll find that it wasn't him.

Third, the point of the film is not that he is without responsibility or blame. The point of the film is that there are no easy answers and that there are ills throughout society that are in need of correction.

Exactly. The trigger happy cop tried 2 shoot Sandro & ended up shooting the girl Geisa 1st. The other 3 shots came from Sandro but he was being wrestled 2 the ground @ the time & the 1st shot from the cop is probably what killed her & not the 3 afterwards

City of God was a great film but Bus 174 touched more upon the cops role in Brazil which is obviously in need of some serious attention. They werent prepared @ all to deal w/ this situation & in fact one can argue that they actually provoked it. Deep, deep documentary.

and anyone else who feels what i stated spoiled anything if you read before she stated it....

now,

you're right about there being no easy answers or solutions to the problem of the street kids. you can see there are genuine people who want to help them, like his Aunt Yvone and the ladies who would bring the church kids soup, but there is obviously no funding for such a large scale problem. i'm not the most knowledgeable on such topics, but i'm surprised that Unicef and some of the other organizations that deal with international poverty have not begun allocating funds for those people (maybe they have and i'm unaware).

i never could tell what really happened to the girl....so i took the commentators word that she was killed by Sandro. the slow motion replays they showed, if anything, made it harder to tell what took place. i need to see it again and pay closer attention to the last few mins.

but thank you to Mynoriti for posting this and everyone for recommending it. i'm glad i saw this

See above. It was pretty clear 2 me what happened but maybe I'm just jumping 2 conclusions & lookin 4 an excuse 2 blame the cops.

No doubt. Good lookin out 2 Mynoriti, Janey, Kurlyswirl & anyone else recommended this.

No doubt...I drove home pretty much on auto-pilot and had to curl up with my blankie and Seinfeld before I attempted to get any sleep.

I thought it was extremely excellent. To the extreme.

So glad you posted about this coming on, cause I would've missed it for sure.

This movie did such a good job of examining the social system and environment that produces these kinds of tragedies.

I mean it covered everything. A truly thoughtful and compassionate work.

And I think the theme of the film is best summed up in a quotation from the sociologist who was interviewed in it:

"These boys are hungry for social existence."

That says it all.

Everybody needs to see this movie as soon as possible.

I hope you see City of God soon, I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on it. I think there's a chance you'll like it, but there's also the possibility like ricky said that you'll just call it "goodfellas meets kids in brazil." Either way I look forward to discussing or arguing with you about it lol.

One thing certain is that you wont like it as much as you liked this.

I need to see this soon. It actually played here in Kentucky when it was out. . . I just couldn't get to the theater. Plus it only played for like a weekend. Damned indie movies and their short runs (meanwhile The Passion Of The Christ is STILL playing there. . . at the art-house theater! This is like 4 or 5 weeks now isn't it? Why? It's taking up screens.)

>I think there's a chance you'll like

You never know. But I'll give it a fair shot. Open mind all the way.

>Either way I look forward to discussing or arguing with you
>about it lol.

Arguing is best. That way you can illustrate your frustrations by typing in stage directions. For instance:

*throws chair at you*

*smacks you in the face with imported Zhang Yimou DVD*

*hides joint in your textbook*

*gets Denise to make you a designer shirt*

*lets Cockroach go onto televised dance party instead of you*

>
>One thing certain is that you wont like it as much as you

It's taken over one of the arthouse theatres here, too. And it's still selling out shows. I noticed that at the multiplex where I saw Eternal Sunshine. I think whole church groups are going together--multiple times.

People are treating it like it's a new book in the Bible.

Mel chapter 1 verse 17 wherein Danny Glover sayeth "I do getteth too old for this shit."

Mel Gibson is a right wing religious fundamentalist and nothing he says or does should be taken seriously. That's my personal feeling on the subject.

I love the Cosby Show. I think my favorite episode was when Vanessa introduced Dabnis for the first time.

Or maybe the show where they went into the studio with Stevie Wonder: "Jammin on the One!"

I've always trusted your opinion here, and given Bus 174's content I didn't have much doubt that I would like it, but you've gone to bat for this movie so much that anything short of incredibly amazing would have been a let down.

I'm happy to say I was wrong

And I hope this comes back to LA. I'd really love to see it on the big screen
