"Lets Talk Anime (New and Old)"

I've run into a wall with Bleach...meaning there are no new eps. What other good shows are out there? I haven't been really excited about a show since I finished Monster. I watched Gundam Seed Destiny and that was cool. Hell I wouldn't even mind watching another Gundam series if it was good. It's hard to find good ones IMO. I'm late as hell getting into Ghost In The Shell SAC but once I get HDD space I'll start watching that seriously. Any other good fighting or thought provoking anime out there?

Oh and don't mention Naruto....we all know what the deal is with that.

Your milage may vary though...

Flag is a war documentary styled show about a photojournalist and her assignment with the military and it's new battlefield weapon. One aspect is the conflict the UN is involved with. The other is the main characters search for meaning in her work and how it affects the outcome of the war.

The art and animation are great and the story seems to be grounded in the real world politics of Middle Eastern conflicts. The most interesting thing about the show is that it's being told through the various still images and video files of the journalist that are involved. Consequently, you get a show that's almost entirely made up of camera POV sequences and stolen moments.

If anyone is thinking the character design is familiar, it's because the designer used to work on the Disney TV shows like Duck Tales. He also animated the German Sheppard attack scene in Akira. His style is very western and it shows in the dialogue scenes when characters interact.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6722
Kemonozume is a tragic romance between a monster hunter and the monster he unwittingly falls in love with. Done in a style simular to Bill Plympton's animation but with more of a pop art/indy comic feel, it looks and feels very different from most current animation. It's coarse and rough around the edges but at the same time, very effective for the kind of surreal story they're trying to tell.

Looking into the development of the show, it seems some of the more experimental tallents in Japan's animation scene are connected with the show. Most of animation will be done by the director but others will step in to take up the slack as the series progersses. The roster shows tallent from Samurai Champloo, Beck and Eureka 7 stepping up to show off what they can bring to the mix.

You could always give Gundam Seed a try to see how Destiny got to the point it did. Granted, it would be kind of anticlimactic since you know how everything turns out.

The Gundam shows I usually reccomend for the uninitiated take place in the original timeline of the series.

Gundam the 08th MS Team
Jungle warfare drama in south east Asia during the time of the original series. The last two eps are well worth the wait for this series.
http://www.gundamofficial.com/worlds//uc/ms08/multimedia/index.html

Gundam 0080
A slow but engaging drama about a young boy discovering the reality of war in his home colony. Not a lot of action but it is put to good use and punctuates the series well.
http://www.gundamofficial.com/worlds/uc/0080/multimedia/index.html

Gundam 0083
The Top Gun of the Gundam franchise where a lot of hardware is rolled out. Very action packed but somewhat uneven in the story. Still very entertaining.
http://www.gundamofficial.com/worlds/uc/0083/multimedia/index.html

All are relatively short series and don't require a lot of time to watch.

Those two series ("Flag" & "Kemonozume") are what I would've recommended as well. Very good series.
If I were to pick two other's I'd say:

Does this actually get beyond fanservice and actually deal with why the main character is a recluse. The "I'm going to show her how perverted I am by hiding in bushes and taking sneak shots of elementary schoolgirls on a windy day" gag really turned me off.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Great series. Theres only one fighting episode but its a good one.

I just finished watching Monster, and I HATED the ending. That series should have been 4 seasons instead of six, and Johan should have gotten the shit kicked out of him for the entire final episode.

But ultimately it's Vampire Hunter D light with a bunch of dangerously handsome characters.

Actually, Trinity Blood is a bit of a trend I'm noticing that seems to be including girls as a target fanbase. Shows like this Getbackers, Jyuosei(boy, was that one for the fan-girls) and Innocent Venus seem to be reaching out by taking the cute guys protecting a girl theme.

Then again, there seem to be a lot of shows that are targeted to girls that get little play since a good chunk of fandom over here in the US seems to be male and obsessed with preteens. Most of the girl centered shows seem to be centered on romance or wish fulfilment but I'm beginning to see quite a few mecha and action shows that seem to be catering towards female fans.

I think this is also the reason why they took Gundam Seed/Destiny in the direction they did.

But you're right, what few episodes I saw, the developing romance was definitely leaning toward Inu-Yasha-like protectiveness, only Abel's not adolescent mean.

Still, girls need their anime too. Otherwise, they start ruining shows like Naruto with their stupid Naruto-Sasuke fanships (wth is that about?). Little girls need their own little shows to play fantasy with.

I liked the VHDness though. I kind of miss that type of thing. I need to go back and read Sandman or something lol.

But if it's Super Robots like Big O you looking for, you NEED to see Giant Robo. If you can find it, give it a shot.

It's a modern retelling of the old school robot manga stories that were eventually made into what was called Johnny Sokko here in the US.

In a completely different direction, there's Rahxephon. It's a modern series inspired by the old school show Raideen and Evangelion. To be honest, it's as if the director said; "Evangelion dropped the ball, we can do it better!".

And to be honest....IMHO, they did.

This is one reason why I think Rahxephon does a slightly better job. IT ENDS. The movie they did for the show was essentially a alternate view of events/summary of the seires.

The other two things that put it ahead would be that all the characters don't just come off as self centered jerks in the end and even with a TV budget, Rah stays visually stunning for a majority of the series without all the rushed shortcuts and reused animation.

Aside from that, Rahxephon is just slightly ahead of Evangelion. Both are very good and in their own way challenges you through the stories they tell.

And finally, Evangelion is getting a four movie redux starting in summer 07. Milk it Gainax. Milk it for all it's worth...

http://www.animenewsservice.com/

"Apparent scans from the October, 2006 issue of the Japanese edition of Newtype Magazine (not officially due out on shelves until this wekeend) have appeared online, backing up almost word for word the information reported below. Images Copyright (c) Kadokawashoten 2006 / (c) GAINAX - Khara / Project Eva The title for the new film series is "Evangelion Shin Gekijou Ban", it will consist of 4 parts (First volume, Second part, Latter part and Final story) with the first part arriving in Japanese theaters in early summer, 2007. Staff include General Supervisor: Hideaki Anno, Director: Tsurumaki Kazuya , Character Design: Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Mecha Design: Ikuto Yamashita, Animation Production: Khara (Color) Studio. The scenario of the 1st part will be written by Hideaki Anno with storyboard by Shinji Higuchi. Key points of an interview in the magazine with Toshimichi Ohtsuki of King Records have also been circulating. According to that information:
-The content is quite different though the time base of the story is the same as the original TV series.
- It will be a remake, however, it is not a re-creation but a "new work".
- The approach will be different than what Tomino-san did with the Gundam Z New Translation films, there will apparantly be a large amount of new material.
- Even if the TV series has not be seen, the viewer will be able to enjoy it. Though the content becomes easy, it is not redundant to those already familiar with the series.
- The technique that purposely scatters difficult words and phrases will not be used any longer.
- As an antithesis to current animation industry segments, it is an attitude on the production side to pull the act in the age that started from Eva."

It goes out the window once they stick her in a none revealing uniform that involves bloomers. Yes, there is a titty shot in the first episode but as of episode five, it's the only one there is. They seem to be going through a Go Nagai phase or something; they've already done two projects with the Cutey Honey character.

You know Gainex is all about playing off the conventions; I'm sure you recognize how it's a throwback to Gigantor, Mazinger Z, Getter Robo and the like.

...or the fanservice.

It's the "I'm gonna be your best friend even if it kills me" thing going on between her and the depressed brown girl. The majority of the story is centered on this ditzy android begging for her attention and approval of someone too self centered to give a damn. That wole bubbly in the face of insurmountable indifference is played to me.

The background story is FASCINCATING. Seeing how they tie it into the original is what I'm waiting to see ep 6 for. But cutting through all the forced cutsey drama and angst is a bit tiring.

And if we're talking about Go Nagai's influence, we would have seen the Nono go beserk at being rejected, revert to Devil Nono, rip the other girl's head off and proceed to destroy the solarsystem (with what we learn in ep5) while facing off against as succession of Bustermachines. Eventually culminating with GOD GUNBUSTER materializing from the center of the universe and saving the day.

If we were to take his more "hot blooded" creations as a source, that is...

...fanservice doesn't bother me, or any of the female fans I know, if there's a lot more going on to make the time wasted worth it. Same goes for cliche' plots.

Two examples would be Midori Days...
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=3592

And Dokkoida...
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2950

Both have the usual cliche's up the yin yang but manage to skewer them in ways that make it fun and tell a decent story at the same time. I watched these expecting to not be too impressed and eventually found myself enjoying them quite a bit. Granted, I'm not rushing out to get the dvd's or anything.

Tekkon Kinkreet

http://www.tekkon.net/site.html

It's the theatrical adaptation of the manga Black and White, one of the most surreal, whimsical, gritty, but touching comics I've read in a LONG time. The basic plot is about two street kids who but heads with the cops and local mob. If this film comes close to the orignal, it will be highly entertaining.

The animation is by Studio 4C, the masters of taking the usual japanese animation conventions and telling them to fuck off. If you want to get a look at the pilot they helped produce with sofimage in order to get funding, go here...

Naruto: we've had about 4 episodes with the new openings and endings. These usually last a full season....which would mean we've got close to 20 more episodes THIS season if they don't switch over to the new stories mid opening. However the new opening does show a glimpse of naruto in his new clothes which could be a hint that these are the last episodes of filler. I'm being conservative and saying, after being told the new episodes would start this past spring, we won't see new episodes until 2007.

Bleach: going off naruto, it's been a full year since the fillers started and I think there is more than ample material to start showing those episodes again but I don't know how long it takes to draw an episode. This style of animation is different from South Park and they use computers. With bleach not even close to a year of fillers yet...I'm not expecting new bleach episodes until 2008 at the earliest. I mean there just isn't enough manga material to draw yet.

...i'm trying to at least watch a lil of the Bount arc so i can see what these fillers are about, but as soon as i started watchin the "kidnapped games" episodes i was pretty sure i was witnessin filler, horrible filler....

i heard a rumor that the filler eps of Naruto bring in less and less viewers each week so there could be trouble ahead...

...i wanna read manga, but i still have a tough time gettin into it...

They did a "special ep" to "bring back viewers". It sucked. All they did was play snippets of of old fight scenes and have cut ins of characters....it was wack.

I want part II. Those fight scenes are going to be sick.

"Death Note" & "Hataraki Man" are on the top of my list.
anybody checking out "Bartender"?
I tried to get into it just for the sake of checking out a 'different' type of anime but it's just too corny and tries too hard in the "we can make anything into anime" department
might've been an interesting manga though
