"what do soulq's charge??"

i'm sayin' how much is your fee for hookin' someone up. okay, you don't have to give me any figures, but how do you go about justifying how much to charge different people?
like, say the jazzies wanted a track or two. would you hook em' up cuz they were fam?(even though the record company prolly pays for it)
or if n'sync hit you guys up for a track. that's big $$$ right there.
i know y'all are pretty much a collective, but how do you work it out between everyone as far as who contributes what?
basically i'm asking what the creative process is like for you guys? or does it depend on the artist.

ALSO, D is a soulquarian obviously. is he going to be contributing more to various projects in the future? cuz i noticed he didn't on erykah's but he did on common's. what's up ur guy's sleeve for the immediate future?

ALSO, ALSO-have any "big" named artists step to you all and asked for contributions to there projects recently? i know mj did, but you guys nixed that for studio expenditures or something like that.

so, lay it on me somebodyd. i deserve to know!!!

peace and love my fellow players.
thank you & goodbye

I hope the Soulquarians don't do anything with n'sync or any pop music star because that's not soul music. You can't be anybody to be blessed with a soulquarian track. It has to be a soulful person like D'angelo, Bilal, Badu, Common, Jill, Musiq, etc. Even someone like Mary J would be worthy of a Soulquarian track. I can't speak for them, but looking at their track record; I don't think it has anything to do with the money, but the artist themselve. So I think they charge you soul instead of major money( Yes their is a fee though). Peace and Love

I think the Soulquarians should work with whoever can bless their music. I don't care that much for N'Sync, but I heard an a capella track from their current album, and the harmony was off the meter! Now I was imagining what it would sound like with some great music behind the vocals, and I can hear ?uest's crisp drums keeping time, and a little bit of James on the keys, and maybe even Pino on the bass. In other words, I agree on them not just working with any ol' body. But saying they should only work with people in the quote unquote "soul" category would leave out a lot of heavyweight contenders.

jay dee producing for jigga is no surprise to me, jay z can rhyme, he has skills, jay dee has skillz, they both dont see anything wrong with bein about girls or money, i dont see this being anything more than a dope beat for jay z and a good payday for jay dee, that collaboration seems fine
If the dough was righter than right i still dont think they would do a track for nelly, unless they gave him a scrap joint they dont like or did one as a joke or some shit. nelly would have to live in a studio with them for a month and get schooled and make a real song.
and after all is said and done we all have bills to pay, but if you think the okayartists are making this music to pay their bills then i think your mistaken, i think if it was like that they would have made a moneymakinmusicscheme a long time ago.

I didnt say okayplayer artists made music just to pay bills but i'm sure us purchasing their albums and singles did help a little.

I'd hope for the Soulquarians to branch out from doing strictly soul/hip-hop. Perhaps a 'rock' track with Vernon Reid, or weird Prince influenced bluesy joint with Beck. Work with artists that we wouldn't expect to see them on the same record with.

this J Dilla/N Sync collabo interests me for that very reason.

Yo I'm starting to think by reading these post that the Soulquarians are bullshit. Man they holla about all the commercial emcees and artist, and then say shit like I'll work with n'sync because it's a challenge. Yo don't you think niggas like Jay Z, DMX, Nas, and others can rap about the street and hustling they whole career. Yet they took chances by turning in there street stories for dollars signs. To me ya'll aren't doing it for the love, but for the money. N'synce and other pop shit is not a challenge it's money; sorry you can't fool a real nigga. See that's the thing they would do something for n'synce before they would do something with DMX, Nas, or even Beans. I mean Jdilla is apart of the Soulquarians, but he's always bless other niggas in Hip Hop with nice tracks(Busta Ryhmes for why you niggas hate him). Have these happy ass emcees couldn't get in a chipher and fuck with niggas like Jay Z, X, and Beans. I've always like the Soulquarians but when they talk about somebody and do the same thing, that's bullshit. I don't hate somebody who tries to get paid, but say that don't be on some I do it for the love shit. Peace and Love

Maybe I understand because I'm a musician who wants to get into the business as either an artist or a producer. But when somebody says they create music "for the love of music", that means the reason they would create any piece of music is because they like to do it. You can't hate on the preference of who he/she/they create music WITH. Just because the Soulquarians haven't made a track with Jay-Z or DMX doesn't mean they only collaborate to get paid. You can't even include Beans in this argument because he was on The Roots' "Adrenaline!". From what I can tell, the Soulquarians work with people who either (a) fit the so-called "soul" category or (b) people who can truly BLESS a Soulquarian track. Me personally, I think Jigga and DMX would be crucified by "real niggas" for doing a collabo with the likes of ?uestlove and James Poyser (I didn't include Jay Dee cause he does a lot of rap, and D doesn't really count because he can sing the hell out of a hook), but I would probably like it. We should just appreciate the product if the Soulquarians do indeed work with pop artists like N'Sync. If nothing else, you know the music will sound great!

Yo I'm also a Muscian, Poet, and Buisnessman See n'sync is bullshit point blank, and if you colaborate with bullshit you bullshit, sorry. You kissing ass because you trying to get in the game, and I love the music because hip hop and soul music was meant for soulfull black people, sorry again. White people have stole everything we created just like commercial hip hop(Eminem whites holla he's bigger than Hip Hop). That's what white people do pay you a lot of money then steal your shit. Let the Quarians do something with n'sync the Soulquarians want get nothing but a paycheck. No credit for the music it would be call a new sound from n'sync. I'm pretty sure if you knew X you would know he would love to work with the Soulquarians, but the question is would they, proberly not. They would do n'synce though, that's bullllllllshit!!!!!!!

Why is N'Sync "bullshit" to you? Because they're white? Or do you have more credible reasons? Like I said, I wouldn't blast their music all day long because I don't care for them, but I can't deny the fact that they can sing. About the a cappella track off their album? I had a friend of mine who is very well knowledgeable in music tell me that they utilize very complex harmonies and arrangements when they sing. As far as I can tell, that's what ?uest et al love: shit that the average Keep It Real Kenny can't do. And NO, I'm NOT kissing ass just to get in the game, I'm stating an honest opinion. I think that working with N'Sync would be a good deal for the Soulquarians' dedication to art as well as their pocketbooks. And I'm ASSUMING that if X really wanted to work with the Soulquarians, he just has to reach out to them. They might decline, but wanting to work with someone and really TRYING to work with someone is two different things.

Yo they can't sing, period. Bilal can sing, D'angelo can sing, Musiq can sing, R kelly can sing, Jaheim can sing, Jill Scott can sing, Badu can sing, Mary J can sing, Kelly Price can sing, must I go on. It's not because they're white, Jon B is white and he can sing better than them, for real!! X is the shit, but this isn't about X this about soulful singers with soulful production. N'syne is not soulful at all, unless they've been eating some greens, cornbread, and black-eyed peas(the right way). I doubt that!!!!!!!

no this is about you trying to enforce your closeminded view of music on the rest of the okayplayer community.

by the way, you stated that you mix art with bullshit then you get bullshit but I believe you are being pessimistic. Do you feel that the bullshit of N'Sync will taint the artisticness of a track produced by SoulQ's?

I haven't ever really listend to N'Sync music and I don't have cable so I don't even think I can name one song by them. I haven't been exposed to them enough to build any animosity. Maybe if I saw what they were like I would empathize with you more but I DO know you cannot be certain about what is motivating an artist when they create. Perhaps dollars do come into the mix but so what? The Cistene Chapel was a commissioned work. You don't see no Italians talking about "Michaelangelo was on some old getting paid bullshit...fuck the chapel and fuck that David statue too..." In all reality, all of our greatest artists that we know of achieved wealth and fame from their work except for a few post-impressionists like Van Gogh. Art is nothing but creation...expression and revelation of the self to the self. If you can get paid to do that at the same time cool. Some folks don't really create, I will grant you that, but you cannot get caught up in thinking that money somehow taints art. If that is the case then you gotta call coltrane and davis and simone and wonder and everybody else a sellout except for that cat on the corner singing for the hell of it.

h20

P.S. I like the way you jumped on qoolquest's sack when he replied to you in person. you on some super fan isht huh? Trying to steer the direction of your favorite artitst but being a sycophant at the same time.

i don't equate, doing shit for nsync the equal of killing my people by selling drugs. and until you walked in my shoes y'all can't say a goddamn thing.

if the outcoming product is lackluster, then that's a comprimise. me? i don't worship money that much that i'm just beggin some big star to work with. personally i'm not mad at all at nsync. so that's why i would even consider a move. believe me. there are a scillion projects that i rejected that coulda easily set me straight on some large crib x5 shit.

so cut that elite truer than thou bullshit out and give it to the next man. cause at the end of the day. i gotta look in the mirror. and i never lose sleep regreting anything i've done in my carrer.

I could care less who you make music with. If it's tight I'll get it.....if not...holla. I can think of a few white atrists that I would LOVE to hear on a SQ's track. I mean...can you imagine a collabo with Sting?? I'm sorry, but that shit would be hot!! N'Sync doesn't sound any worse than some of these black cats we got out here. (No, I am NOT promoting them) I think the problem is that the perception is that they will do anything for a $. Not because of the love for the music. Dunno, but at some point niggas gotta eat too.

Yo YO! Just sayin sumthin sumthin. I actually think nsync, despite my deep loathe for their music, may actually have alittle talent in their voice. It's just not really soulful, hardly! But i once heard them play live on hbo just flickin through channels and there backup band actually did a lite sumthin sumthin and wasnt bad. but then the singers came back out and i laughed at the choreography of their danses and switched channels.

Hey heres a shoutout to all my g-town crew!

So there's a strong possibility that N'Sync's next album could have a Soulquarian track on it (or two)? I think this would be the only way I bought their album, just to hear what goodness you and Jay would give them. Props to working with artists who present a challenge. I also would like to know if they (N'Sync) reached out to Jay Dee and asked him to work on their next album. That would be a big compliment for him, considering the number of people who are still ignorant to the man's catalogue.

You can add the 3.5 rating received by both "93 Til Infinity" and "Funcrusher Plus" to that list. And "Low End Theory" also got a 5 mic review if I'm not mistaken.

16. "RE: what do soulq's charge??"
In response to Reply # 0

they charge 4 music cuz they r artists, 2 be recognize cuz they r artists, 4 money cuz they r artists...i mean i think they r gifted ,if u r like me, u'd think "why other arists leave them in the musical ghetto?" i'd loathe at ?uest if he hit Nshit wit somethin but we also like him cuz he takes chances no?
he's an artist, at least he should make a jam wit dem (if they know what it is).
like most soulq's followers i look at them as the good guys that should work only wit good guys. but remember they wanna be the cuttin edge, isn't it selfish if they don't influence some peers and bring them 2 the promise land?. 4 instance i hate DMX version of bill withers "ain't no sunshine",let us imagin ?uest, jajapo, pino, jef lee on the wah guitar, bilal 4 the chorus....good hum?
when people r willing 2 work wit em, u think d should be like "dr.dre? chicken grease sample? clear it? u'll pay me big? i'm an artist i don't give a fuck bout your money!" or the same 4 jay-z & jay dee; i say let them bring something new in2 their peers minds. and niggas sayin they "on the top/wether they perform or not" or "after me there will be none" should pay 'em big so they can put money on new shit 4 the fam. on the other hand they might be used in order 2 make money: see how r kelly uses jay-z as his hoe (fiesta remix).
remember d sayin 2 ?uest that he can't do nothin musically-forced (although he was workin wit princess leia aka lauryn hill) and remember ?uest ask us 2 think about,in things fall apart liner notes, "what would happen if we don't give the crowd what they want but what they need?"... in my opinion ahmir talks about freedom: let me be free of doin something new and u be free-minded & open-minded, artistry knows no limit.

i agree if they work wit vernon reid cuz charlie hunter is good but not funky enough: d should re-do "the root" wit ?uest, pino, vernon

I think it's at least 20,000 $ for production (depending on whether you want a couple of tracks to a full album), but
probably more, with the grammies, Common and D's album ...

Plus studio expenses, hotel, etcetera ...
