Saw Shawn Ryan speak and he said that Sam was directing every episode of this season. Hope he didn't burn himself out.

Definitely the best new show and possibly best show overall of last year.

awesome how they're slowly piecing together Wellick's disappearance.
just a fucking mesmerising opener to the season overall.

I figured we wouldn't get a glimpse of Tyrell in this episode and that's a fun storyline to have in the background. Interested to see that mystery play out.

Angela's turn this season is REALLY interesting and leaves her less happy than anyone.

Darlene is trying to spearhead the movement, but not entirely sure where it's going without Elliott. The cash-burning trick was a good move though. There was only one other original fsociety member there, right? He always seemed the most hesitant, so I'm surprised he's lasted this long.

Elliott's trying to find a new normal while still not even knowing what's going on in his mind. I've never had the problems this character has, but when you're in that hazy "Have I even been taking my medication?" phase it's scary as hell. Add on to that the fact that his mind has the ability to basically destroy the world. Mr. Robot isn't even pretending to be fatherly anymore, just straight up corrupting and fucking with the kid.

I have a lot of faith in this show.

And more Joey Bada$$ Seinfeld Thoughts.

Darlene's in an interesting position. All of the dread the other fsociety members were feeling the night of the hack never seemed to affect her, but it's clearly hitting her now. She's hurt them, but not bad enough to kill them. The revolution hasn't freed anyone, just given some people the confidence to commit vandalism and party about it (and made hard cash even more valuable.) Even if they do wind up putting ECorp out of business some day, what then? Who's going to rebuild after they've burnt it all down? Gonna be hard for Darlene to do both without radically altering who she is.

For some reason, Elliott writing everything Mr Robot was saying to him in his journal as he was saying it cracked me up.

BTW, was anyone else sort of taken out of the moment when the CTO dumped that money on the ground and NOBODY tried to pick up some of those stacks and run?

This article theorizes that Eliot's new life is actually inside a mental hospital and the author makes a compelling point.

He has a regimen. He eats with Leon at the same time every day. He doesn't really engage Leon, just listens to him speak. Like a random other patient in a mental hospital. Leon just discovered Seinfeld in 2016. Is he watching syndicated episodes on the hospital television? Eliot's room is decorated spartanly and is really a hospital room. He writes in a journal as if he might be required to do it in a mental hospital. His "mother" acts more like a guard (or cranky mental hospital nurse). Ray is just another patient in the hospital. One with an imaginary dog. He wants to escape so he wants Eliot's help.

everything about Elliot's new situation was a tad off. but from all the new faces and the isolation and the visual cues? seems like he committed himself but has built a delusion on top of it, which is maybe his brain's way of dealing with it.

both Craig and Joey were real, and I figured it was jail by episode 4. the politics of the race of the characters and the oddness of places Elliot was "living" in, all signaled jail

I'm just confused at the scene of Craig eating that meal by himself with the dialysis machine and how exactly he was running the biz online out of jail. also the scene were he was in "the kitchen", how was the other dude's family there.

and the FBI showed up to arrest them at a jail

but overall well done

because it was just people not involved with the show nerding it up about details of episodes. this one follows that Talking Dead type format where they bring in people from the show on some "what ways are you like and not like Elliot? fuck off with that.

the "after show" for the rest of the episodes I believe. Andy Greenwald is great. But I laughed when he called Talking Dead basically the lowest form of television and then him and Chris Ryan got After the Thrones and Chris Hardwick was gloating like a little kid. But they made up on the Andy Greenwald Pod a couple years ago.

Andy's humour is very dark in his writing and The Watch pod, so its funny to see him thrust into the cheerful host role. I'm not sure he loves it, but its gotta be good for business and for raising awareness for The Ringer

Love how hard it is to watch Elliot's mental illness. They are constructing such a clear picture of how difficult it must be to have schizophrenia. From the sound engineering, to the construction of the scenes, to the dynamics of the interactions he has with other people: All of it is so well done.

I also love that this show had the courage to develop within a "revolution" on American soil and it's not a dystopia or a utopia. While I may not rock with some of the representation or lack of detail with how the world is functioning in terms of money, it's a unique and difficult word to build

What I don't like, sorry, Darlene. It's awesome that they got a woman at the head of the rebellion, but she's terribly written and annoying. In no which way would I follow or believe in her in the real world. She has no vision beyond the crumble, she's overly emotional, she doesn't know how to talk to her own comrades, and she simultaneously understands how dire things are yet doesn't. If Darlene acted within the rebellion like Angela acted within E Corp, then I could rock with her. I would much rather they debeloped Trenton as the head woman of the movement. I blame the writers for that though, but Carly ain't the best actress either

Speaking of Angela, Portia is actually doing a great job with her, but her arc seems off and rushed. The subtleties of how much angst and conflict she has are so well done, but I don't understand why. Maybe that's on me as a viewer. It just seems one day she's being crushed by the realities of what this Corp has done to her family, then she's lock step down with their power...

Joey and Craig, especially Joey, have been great additions. I'm upset they killed Romero first. Like come on y'all, the Black dudes, first, again. I know I know technically they off'during Gideon first, but you know what I mean.

Fuck I'm addicted right now, lol

she seems to be purposely unable to see it from a big picture standpoint

i think this season is really building up to show that Mr. Robot is important for that aspect

her arc is making sense now. she hasn't bought the kool-aide all the way, but she's def struggling with how to manage her need for revenge, her personal desire for power, and to stay loyal to Elliot and his team

Joanne is cold. She took ol bartender boy's soul in ep4 and proceeded to dome him up like it would even matter. Theno the philosophy of how and why they murdered old boy, this show is reaching peak atheism/ chaos theory... it's wonderful

White Rose is a fantastic character. From the gender bending, to the theoretics about time, to him possibly being the smartest person on the show knowing he has to feed capitalism, stay within ethnic tradition, and be at the Frontier of technology. Es muy bueno

Some one please punch Angela in the face

Damn I really hope the Elliott in psyche ward theory is not true, but McGriff and PimpTrick kinda gave it away above

That shoot out... woooo.

I'm upset that doesn't get any dick redhead survived. Her character bothers me, only cause she making gains against the Rebellion.

but can someone explain to me how they let a whole gang of f-bombs go all unedited in the first few eps, and then in ep4 Darlene says "cunty" but they muted out all the "fucks" in the same ep?? lol. what copies am i watching? are they releasing unedited joints anywhere? (clearly i'm watching online).

just utterly fascinated with White Rose at this point. BD Wong is killin it. and Elliott needs to start finding that middle ground and listen to dad when it's got to do with survival instincts, coulda saved himself from a beatdown.

so the shooters in China were Dark Army? can we assume this?

53. "Sam Esmail talks Whiterose, long episodes and season 2 reactions (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.ew.com/article/2016/08/03/mr-robot-whiterose-long-episodes-season-2-reactions.

Posted August 3 2016 — 11:00 PM EDT

Regardless of your specific reaction to season s of USA’s Mr. Robot so far, it’s safe to say the new set of episodes have felt… different. This is a darker part of Elliot Alderson’s story. The episodes are longer (tonight’s being the first episode this year to clock in at under 60 minutes). And the pace is slower than the hack-focused plotting of last year, when Mr. Robot broke out in a big way.

And there have been some growing pains. Complaints about runtimes have cropped up, and creator/executive producer Sam Esmail has acknowledged this publicly (albeit in a slightly tongue-in-cheek fashion).

EW caught up with Esmail, busy in post-production on the rest of the season, to talk about some of the biggest moments in episode 4, “eps2.3_logic-b0mb.hc,” and address some of the reactions to the series this year.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What were the early conversations about Ray and the role he would play in Elliot’s life?
SAM ESMAIL: Ray, to me, was a character that I always had in mind to represent the Silk Road archetype, meaning if you think about the morality of something like a Silk Road, you’re essentially creating a marketplace that anyone can do trade on and you’re just going to ignore what they’re actually doing. It’s actually free trade without any laws or limits. For Ray, he’s the guy looking the other way. He’s making a lot of money, but he’s trying to ignore what’s being bought and sold on there. We just thought that was an interesting moral gray area to explore with a character. I thought it would be an interesting intersection to have Elliot confront someone like that, who is a decent guy but who could actually commit the atrocities that are on this marketplace. He’s indirectly allowing them to happen. Elliot is trying to not be that vigilante anymore. He’s trying to move away from that. I just thought, here we have two guys in murky areas in their lives, and they cross paths. What does that look like? What are the effects of that?

It also feels like the first time we’re starting to see the full, real Elliot in season two.
There is a thing in Elliot. There’s the good side of his vigilantism that wants to save the world — the thing that he said at the end of the first season — that he’s locked away. He locked it away with the bad side effects of that, which is in essence what Mr. Robot embodies. He’s locked away the good and the bad and essentially zombified himself because he feels like it’s the only way to control it. This is the first time that temptation has come back to him. That harkens back to the Elliot we saw in the first season, but it’s a very reluctant Elliot. He actually doesn’t act fast enough, and he gets punished for that.

That rattail is one of the grossest things I’ve seen on TV in a while.
Yeah, we’re trying to set the bar.

Whiterose has gotten some more of the spotlight in these last two episode. What did you want to convey about her life and backstory as we begin to see a fuller picture of her?
The one thing about Whiterose that’s very interesting is the mystery, right? It’s not what you know about the person; it’s more about what you don’t know and how to keep that intriguing. A lot of the charm of Whiterose is the way BD plays it. He’s so brilliant at playing coy and complex and mysterious and just fun. He’s got this great smile. In tonight’s episode, he walked down the stairs, and he’s got this serious look. Then it switches to a smile. I love that moment. That’s the only thing that I want to convey about Whiterose, that she has a passion. We don’t know what that passion is, but she is very diligent and very deliberate and very methodical about what she’s after. If she doesn’t get it, she quickly adjusts and figures out an alternative way of getting. And she holds her cards very close to her vest. I think what we’re seeing is her methodology, but also in tandem with that, we’re seeing her passion and seeing how much she cares about the causes she’s taken on right now.

And we’re seeing a sadness in her in the scenes with Dom. What made them interesting sparring partners for you?
You’re right. There is a sadness, and I equate that with passion. She’s going through this inner struggle with her identity. She feels so much like one person, and she doesn’t feel like she can be that person. That’s part of her passion. She wishes she could. I think what she sees in Dom is that same notion. We haven’t gone down Dom’s path yet, but there is something about Dom that has that same sadness, the same hiding behind the mask. Is she the person she wants to be? Does she feel like she can be the person she identifies with? What I love about it is that Whiterose always goes to the background for people. She doesn’t talk to Santiago, who is the head figure. She goes to the person that she sees is a little more cunning, a little smarter and more on her game, but just doesn’t fit into her identity as well as she could. I think that’s the connection Whiterose feels with Dom.

This week’s episode was shorter than the others this season, and you tweeted about the runtimes, apologizing. Why were episodes running long before?
To clarify my tweet, because I think maybe people took it the wrong way, I don’t apologize for those episodes because I actually really love those episodes, and I think everyone did a really good job. The problem was that, as a viewer, I know that if I have to watch a 65-minute episode that night — I’m talking about any great show that I love, Fargo or Game of Thrones — I know I’ll probably watch half of it and then watch the rest the next night. Sometimes it’s good to just get a 42-minute episode, so you can sit there, watch it, and bang it out in a night. That was really what was behind the tweet.

Obviously, I think people had problems with the pacing of those episodes, and that’s a very subjective thing. We in the edit bay and people I showed the cuts to, we felt very proud of those episodes. The thing I want to say about pacing is that an episode can have a slower pace and still be compelling. There are a lot of television shows that have very slow paces. It doesn’t go through a lot of story and it’s still compelling and entertaining. Obviously, that’s where we were at with our whole season this year, because we know that the pace got slower from the first season. That was by design, but we felt that we were putting out pretty compelling, entertaining stuff.

For the first few episodes of our season, those long runtimes were necessary to get through what we needed to set up for the season. There wasn’t anything we could really do, and I think we really tightened it and made it as polished as possible to set up those beats and tell those stories. Unfortunately for some people out there, it wasn’t as engaging, and for others it was. That’s the nature of the beast.
---

i'm with Esmail.
and fuck apologising for ANYthing. i'm LOVIN the longer runtimes. and the seemingly slower pace. gotta let shit cook first. can't stand all these fickle impatient viewers AND critics taking a huge dump on the first few eps of this season (one of the reviews for the most recent ep was titled: "Mr. Robot Is Good Again!". what the fuck man lol). this show goes from strength to strength. you're either wholly engrossed in this universe, and everything that happens within it, or ur looking for quick and immediate satisfaction and payoffs and not stopping to soak in and enjoy just the visual and aural aesthetic in front of u. just watching and listening to the show is extremely stimulating on its own. that's on top of freaking mesmerising performances by Malek, and most recently by BD Wong. and shit, everyone else. i hope Elliot takes some meta digs at us for not having faith in the material somehow lol.

my only gripe is the afore-mentioned random muting of the word "fuck" which, considering all the OTHER shit they let fly (graphic murders, surprise buttseks, all kindsa drug-induced shit), is a bit fucking silly.

Just enjoying the show. I got in late so was downloading episodes and didn't notice the censorship on the downloaded ones at all, I know I distinctly heard one fuck on an episode this season, maybe some others were muted and I just didn't catch them tho.

I'm just loving this show and trying to recruit all my friends to check out. A lot of them have Amazon Prime where season one is streaming. I'm not sure what twists they will pull off to give this multiple enjoyable seasons but nearly half way thru season 2 and I'm all in.

I'm also glad Christian Slater is finally doing something worthwhile again. I was a big fan of his early on, Heathers, Pump up the Volume, True Romance, even Kuffs were some of my fav movies back in high school. I just rewatched Pump up the Volume recently, dated as hell but still good. lol

loved everything bout the 90s sitcomisation.
and ALF??!
and GIDEON!??
and Gideon returning only to smh at his own death...and then die again? and die by being run over by..ALF?! lol.
this show is one of the main reasons i regret quitting weed.

seems to have been lots of clues about real world shit buried in that sequence: primarily what happened to Tyrell, & the mother's abusive behaviour toward Darlene.

overall good to see Mr. Robot showing a more sensitive side toward Elliot. yes he's the survival instinct, but he's also the visual representation of his father. it's bout time they had a nice 'moment'.

Angela's one-take sabotage scene was dope.
can't believe we're already halfway thru the season.

Only thing I am having a problem wrapping my mind around is the Craig Robinson situation. I don't feel the same danger sense that I did with last years 'real world violence' badguy Vera.

It's not Craig Robinson's fault, because he's nailing the role. But last year Elliot/Mr.Robot went through so much crazy shit that its hard for me to imagine this being too much of a hangup. Of course Elliot was too busy trying to get 'sane' but considering he was pulling guns on his friends as Mr.Robot last season in addition to presumably murdering and hiding Welleck's body..Im just waiting for him to let the Mr.Robot persona take over and fuck shit up.

I always figured Elliot was either in jail or a mental institution. But now I'm curious to what he was locked up for. They haven't revealed who came to his apartment at the end of season 1, so maybe related to that?

I also don't think Mr Robot is being honest with Elliot about Tyrell.

Given the reveal, what exactly was the deal with the Craig Robinson character? Was he a prison guard or someone on high up with a Silk Road type setup? I'm guessing the show will explain that more in detail, but that doesn't make too much sense to me, and the way that storyline ended was quite lame.

That's what I meant by being disappointed first, the way that ended I thought was a big copout. I first thought he was playing Elliot at the chess game, then when he wasn't and the cops were coming that was bullshit. lol But then the twist at the end I didn't see coming. I guess I wouldn't have been as surpised if it was 2 or 3 episodes ago but last episode was essentially a dream within a dream so completely threw me off.

I need to rewatch that last part but thought Ray was just one of the prisoners and was in the NA meetings with him too, maybe not tho.

Yeah, think its a guard or warden now. So most everything did happen, website was real but ran by this guard and Elliot exposed it. The Seinfeld cat does probably work for White Rose and stopped a prisoner ambush. Its making more sense now, was pretty confused after watching last night.

or a prison guard. Likely he was a counselor as he had an office and a computer. He ran a Silk Road site that some of the prisoners used.

and then he fucking STOMPED ON IT.
good lord. that was (wait for it)...bada$$?
the prevailing theory was he was in an asylum by his own free will in order to work on a way of destroying Mr. Robot. jail was a close second, but that just opens up a whole new story as to...WHY.
it can't have anything to do with 5/9 otherwise he woulda presumably been frontpage news by now, Gideon wouldn't have been the fallguy, nor Tyrell been the only public mastermind. maybe freeing Vera from prison was the reason? can't see why he would *willingly* put himself into the prison system so it musta been a past fuckup come back and biting him on the ass.
great mindfuck, but the clues were pretty much there the whole time.

so are we really trusting he won't do this again to "us"?

so the idea is that he turned himself in for the hack/dog theft of his therapists boyfriend

so while relatively minor it did land him in actual prison

Ray was most likely a counselor (he talks about how he thought he was going to "Save" elliot) the therapy dog, him having his own office etc..

then he reveals that he also didnt know exactly what was being sold on the site until the first IT guy got beat up thats why elliot is going to "Save" him (he was basically being extorted/threatened by the other prison guards and prisoners) so him getting arrested was him getting saved

once you establish that the narrator is officially unreliable then it's good to sidetrack him so that the show doesn't become too reliant on that "sike, everything is fake!" thing. we all knew there was another side to his story (RE: his living situation) that we weren't getting, but if the whole thing is about unraveling the mystery of elliott's mind it could get annoying quick.

I love how the big "twist" of each season has been largely telegraphed. It's not a twist for the sake of shocking the audience, but feels like a more organic reveal in the context of the story.

The biggest thing sticking on my mind right now... what exactly is the Dark Army's role in all this? Whiterose is both Minister of Defense and head of the Dark Army. He/She wants to see the world burn, but is also apparently trusted by Philip Price. And clearly they wanted access to Allsafe via Cisco's bootleg rap CD... but access to/for what? And why do they now want access to the FBI?

Not to mention there's an implicit assumption that Dark Army would never have been involved had it not been for fsociety's insistence on their involvement (from S1). Their agenda seems like it's older than fsociety, but without fsociety E Corp never goes down (if that was even part of their agenda in the first place... and now my head hurts).

And Tyrell is still gone as fuck (hilarious how he showed up in 90's sitcom dream world, yet we still don't get a look at his face.... wonder why?)

A bit of a bummer was Ray's surprisingly peaceful exit. Hopefully they jump back into his story a bit to explain some things, but expecting Elliot to turn him in seemed like a big leap of faith.

Really good stuff so far, wish more heads were watching this.

As a sidenote, it's interesting to see real life imitating art... I don't claim to be well versed on all the nuances, but apparently the FBI is looking to crackdown on TOR and bitcoin users:

https://news.bitcoin.com/update-bitcoiners-use-tor-warned/

(partial swipe):

A revised Rule 41 would allow the FBI to use a single warrant to hack an indefinite number of computers anywhere in the world. To hack a computer today, the FBI requires a warrant issued by a court with jurisdiction over the location of the targeted machine. After December 1, the FBI can quietly get a warrant from any federal judge and hack not merely a single computer but all computers connected to it…and so on and so on.

In theory, a single warrant issued anywhere in America would allow the FBI to control millions of computers on a botnet whether or not they were located in the United States.

I assume Stage 2 is going to be the focus, or at least its gonna be the 'aha' moment that they end the season on.

I like the fact we moved into pure paranoia mode, although I hope the inner conflict between Mr.Robot and Elliot dies down since its taking up pretty much most of the season.

I like the fact that all the players are getting closer together and aren't working in their separate silos anymore.

i think Esmail's said as much, that it's mostly a focus on Elliot with all the other crazy shit as peripheral (but important of course) stuff.
i don't think we're quite done with it this season either, judging from Elliot's weird timelapses and observations of self from afar. just when he thinks he's got an understanding of his condition, it morphs into something else.

...but so damn confusing lol

I don't know if I didn't pay great attention up front, but who was the injured guy Sisqo picked up from that house? They said the Capitol Hill job?

Did Angela set up Elliot on the train? Who is making the blocked calls and why was goofy nose chauffeur freaked out about the address?

they showed him walking up the stairs of the safe house with the prosthetic leg
there was a part of the FBI hack that darlene sent him to dc for

i don't think angela set elliot up on the train bc it doesn't look like she recognized the people who walked up to her
and in the previews for next week she looks like she's being held captive

He touched upon it this episode, how he's been locked away working on himself while letting everyone on the outside take the fall.

But Reg! He's been dealing with mental issue stuff! But both Elliot and Mr.Robot have dropped the ball...you figured if Mr.Robot gave a fuck (or better yet, if Mr.Robot felt Elliot gave a fuck) he would have used it as a reason to motivate him when he was trying to get Elliot on plan.

i knew what was coming

I can't believe they let Dom survive a second shooting

I watched the drive-by scene again, I looked like Dom pulled Darlene out of the way, but she also had hella blood on her

they had Joanna come off kinda hammy with the "do you wanna say no to me scene". the slow here is the cell shot was basura as well. But good lawd she looked exquisite in that dress.

and that opening scene between Phillip and Colby was brilliant. The angles, the positions of the men, the color saturation, the painting, and Satie's Gnossiene no. 1 playing in the background... incredible

I'm a really need BD Wong to crush Phillip though. That white man makes my skin crawl

Issues: I understand its a two parter but they didn't move the plot forward almost at all. We don't have answers of what happened to Darlene, they were they were intentionally obtuse on what changed Angela's mind (thus adding a new mystery), and they still haven't explained who's been making those late night phone calls.

On the positives the imagery as usual was great...that room and girl were trippy. It's always fun watching the E-Corp dude throw his nuts around in the room, and imho Wellick was missed (there was something about his simple self-serving evilness that grounds the show).

I read a review where they were like either this is gonna be the biggest shark jump ever or a whole awesome new refresh for the show.

We've done a complete 360 from where the show started with a lonely hacker group trying to take down an evil corporation into half of the secondary cast "dead", international assassins and secret safe houses run by 10 year old interrogators. From the jump Rami said he had it all planned out and season 1 was just the first act of the 'movie', so hopefully he pulls it off.

that idiotic Alexa scene. I'm curious why in the world she felt the need to put glasses on since she didn't need to aid her vision to talk to the device while laying in bed. Just a painfully bad scene all around.

It's the best scene they've done as far as the 'super smart cop goes home to an empty apartment because they are consumed with their work' trope...at least here there isn't a sad masturbation scene. The problem is that while this scene worked we've already seen lesser versions of it and they've already given somewhat of an explanation of why she's like this (when she told that story about how she was about to get married). But you right on those glasses tho, LOL. At least if they had her start to read or something.

and made even worse in that the time spent on that scene could have been used to make whatever in the world was going on during the episode a bit more understandable since that time could have been spent to move the story forward in the clearer fashion. Perhaps Amazon is underwriting this season of Mr. Robot and that explains that idiotic, ham-fisted way the Alexa was used in the episode? That's the only thing that would make sense to me.

It did win a couple Golden Globes so maybe. USA just ain't going like that. Its doing about Mad Men first couple season numbers tho and that was helped tremendously imo by being a critical success. Breaking Bad started off better and became enormous after awards and word of mouth, not sure if this will have those legs or not to last past season 3.

I was burned before with this type of gimmicky storytelling with Lost. Should I stick this out? Is there any chance that dude isn't making shit up as this show goes along like Lindelof and Cuse did? Shows obsessed with mystery rarely end well. What a change from season 1.

Like whenever there is a brownout, that is the dark army going back in time (fits with the BTTF music this ep).

1 example: there was a brown out right before the dark army showed up to kill Sisqo at the diner. The DA showed up right after Dom arrived and before the police came to the scene.

I'm checking out if something like this turns out to be true.

this show man.
all those Back To The Future callbacks were cool.
not convinced it's there as part of a time travel/multiverse story, but more to highlight the fact that it was mentioned by Angela to Elliot on the train in the prev ep (maybe to play up their burgeoning emotional connection?). i'm sure there's more to it than that but i'm still not buying it being just a time travel connection.
fucking Elliot snooping on himself.
fucking WELLICK.
clearly Mr. Robot's been hijacking Elliot since 5/9 in order to facilitate stage 2. kinda excited to see what the hell it is.
Angela seemed less fearful, more purposeful. whatever Whiterose said or showed her w/out us being there seems to have put Angela on her own path. she def seemed more relaxed about everything...altho in a quasi-manchurian candidate type way.
anyone else feel like they're planting the seeds for Dom's defection? she seems to fit the hacker profile. would totally buy her joining fsociety at some point.
altho the hospital scene gave jackshit away, i'm gonna assume Cisco died and Darlene survived...then again i'm not entirely convinced ANYone (other than Elliot) is safe.
yes shit got Lynchian for a minute there but i enjoyed every creepy confusing minute of it.

i think overall, with one ep to go, i've loved the transition from the rather rudimentary premise of season 1 into a much more deeply layered exploration into a post-rebellion world in s2. Angela summed it up nicely during her convo with Elliot on the train, how they'll never win. that essentially the PTBs will always find a way to rig the game, even if they're forced to reset the system. main point being that chaos and disorder is fuel to their fire. out of the ashes of something as epic as 5/9 come new and wonderful ways for those in charge to further consolidate power. and like a One in The Matrix, Elliot and his movement play their part in that larger game. i can see each season being an opportunity to peel back more n more layers of the system, to reveal how deep and ingrained the control really is. the fascinating part, to me, is trying to see HOW a movement like fsociety can have any kind of positive impact for the greater good and for the common shlub, without it benefiting the "1% of the 1%".

In response to Reply # 155

either Tyrell was killed by Mr. Robot and Elliot has now absorbed him into his system as another alter, or (and imo more likely) Elliot successfully had a lucid dream and is interacting with his own subconscious (which may explain Tyrell's changed accent, mannerisms, weird jokeyness, wearing a suit, as he's just a version of Tyrell that Elliot concocted from his own memories).

there's also the possibility that the hand that held open the door in Elliot's apartment, before he left to follow Mr. Robot, was Tyrell's.

in either scenario, there's plenty of shit being thrown at us to doubt whether or not that's the real Tyrell Wellick. i'm kinda hoping he's real, but that ep was so surreal it's REALLY fucking hard to tell. which is why i love this show so damn much lol.

It was like the "cooldown" episode after the heat from last episode. So much nuance all around though.

I agree that the time travel theory is too far fetched. That will pull away from the development they've given the characters and make it a farce. I did see somewhere though that Esmail intends to make this five (or four) seasons at most so there's already a pre-planned endgame (a la Breaking Bad). So at least we know this isn't a "Lost" scenario with shit happening on the fly.

> anyone else feel like they're planting the seeds for Dom's defection? she seems to fit the hacker profile. would totally buy her joining fsociety at some point.

I'm getting shades of that, yeah. Her bed scene was so haunting because it's so relatable. And like Shayla and Tyrell in season 1, it feels like Dom is being set up as a tragic end (Shayla) or a major player going forward (Tyrell). I'm hoping the latter myself, I've been a big fan of Dom this season.

> i think overall, with one ep to go, i've loved the transition from the rather rudimentary premise of season 1 into a much more deeply layered exploration into a post-rebellion world in s2. Absolutely spot on. The "post-apocalypse" premise has been explored ad nauseum in so much media but never in this fashion. Fight Club ended with the credit card buildings going down. Mad Max is a post-war world, not post-data. There are a lot of neat little nuggets in Mr Robot that show how this world develops. I loved that brief little scene where Elliot was walking through that daily swap meet, and you get glimpses of what, basically, is a reversion to the barter system.

And the scene that absolutely blew my mind last night was Price's proposal for government support of ECoin. Everything is coming together now. If you control the currency, you control the world. There's a reason why the US Dollar is a safe haven currency and if Price can supplant the dollar with ECoin... it's stunning the amount of power he will wield. This is why Price was so resistant to stepping down, how he was able to leverage a two TRILLION loan (INTEREST FREE) from the Chinese... and why Jack Lew agreed to let E Corp issue ECoin loans.

It's such a refreshing, nuanced take on the "supervillain" and I am thoroughly impressed. Why? Because it all makes sense. The world's superpower cannot continue on a paper currency forever, Bitcoin is the wild west and E Corp is the pinnacle of "too big to fail".

It really makes me wonder what the endgame is. Whiterose is both a partner and rival to Price, and is involved in both the government and the hack. It's a testament to Price's leadership that he was able to put E Corp in an even BETTER position after the 5/9 hack but that then raises the thought... was that the whole point of the hack in the first place? What if (putting tinfoil hat on here) Price INTENDED to collapse the public debt record? And he expected a bailout from the government but needed to lean on China instead? This is farfetched and the more I think about it the more I think that's wrong, but shit it's fun to think about haha.

At the end of the day though, I think the biggest mystery is still Dark Army's motivations. China state-sponsored hacking is already a reality (despite their claims otherwise), so it would actually explain Whiterose's position as Chinese Minister of State Security. And it's clear Whiterose cares DEEPLY about the Washington Township Plant... which is a nuclear plant right? And with blackouts on the East Coast.... what the fuck is going on...

and the Voight-Kampff test performed on the replicants.
the prevailing theory is that Angela and Elliot have been programmed with alternate personalities to act as agents with enhanced abilities, in order to facilitate the 5/9 hack and all the shit still to come. the test/interview was meant to determine which persona Angela was inhabiting at the time. which might explain why she was chill as fuck when visiting her lawyer afterwards. whatever subsequent off-screen convo she had with White Rose seems to have manifested the other personality (theory being since Elliot is programmed with his dad's personality, Angela might be programmed with her mother's).

I don't want to see any time travel reveals. No reprogramming people. None of that. I want Elliot to be the only one that has issues.

Go back to a simple story. A guy with multiple personalities and his rag tag group of friends try to destabilize the world.

I'd be okay if they ended this season with "It was all a dream" and just start fresh with a clean slate next season

It's still about hacking, Elliot's FUBAR'd brain and the machinations of power

Like the show has never given anything close to time travel or reprogramming (outside of Elliot) and I'm honestly not even seeing where people are drawing these conclusions from (other than their own ass).

Angela doesn't have other personalities. She's just driven as fuck despite her own personal insecurity. White Rose put the battery in her back and now she's got purpose, understanding and illuminati backing. It's also the conclusion of an extended troll by Esmail on the audience through Angela's plot line.

These theories making ppl look like Elliot when he was trying to get the cabbie to see Tyrell.

Have some faith in Esmail. Hes earned that much.

the theories are theories, and the fans seem to run fucking wild with em lol. i've always bought into the premise that it's Elliot's fucked up mind we're experiencing majority of this through. he's the lens. we're the silent observers. i feel like all the weirdness is Elliot's attempt at trying to decode reality. i mean there's weirdness happening independent of him as well, but via equally weird characters.

like i said in post #153, i'm loving this season for the depths its plunging us into after the idealism of season 1. everything that's happening has an explanation grounded in reality as we know it, but Esmail and his team seem to love throwing us off our axis and making us completely doubt pretty much everything.

this season's got so many ppl, including reviewers, losing faith left n right. but i actually think the show got 10x stronger *shrugs*

There's a point where you go from appreciating how creative something could be to it just coming off self-indulgent. If they haven't crossed that line already, they're surely walking it.

I'm much more interested in the straight-forward part of the story than trying to decipher the meaning in everything, or determine what's real and what's not.

I'm afraid that scene in the dark room with, let's see, a commodore 64, a mini-me, a fish tank containing a goldfish and apparently emptying for no reason, a mysterious video game, a mysterious phone with a mysterious voice on the line, etc., may have crossed that self-indulgent line. I'll guess we'll see soon.

at the moment I'm willing to accept it at face value because we know how idiosyncratic Whiterose is (and how much she likes her indulgences).

I'm interpreting the Commodore room as a way to express those indulgences that doesn't need to be eliminated if anyone comes sniffing around (a la the computer repair shop).

Of course, if the show continues without explanation for these types of things then it would be Esmail being too "cute".

At this point I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that things will be explained though.

as in, they reference Blade Runner & the empathy test to illustrate Angela's level of humanity, not that she's actually a replicant/android of some kind and has manifested an alter cos White Rose 'turned' her. i think she's just taken the red pill and is operating off a new set of parameters.

mostly everything else can be explained away as being via Elliot's fucked up POV, which is hella unreliable and prone to flights of fancy. i'm 99.9% sure there will be no flux capacitors or tangent universes introduced into the series, no time shifts or teleportation, no sci fi to speak of. the MOST i expect is some MK Ultra programming of the brain type shit, which has been documented for many years, and is totally up the show's alley.

she was the fun loving bestie in a relationship with the dick.
she always been gullible.
going to e-corp wasn't her idea.
setting up the hack wasn't her idea.
the one time she tried to assert herself price laughed her off.

she follows whoever has good reasoning.

>Angela acting like a robot post interview was mad
>troubling/corny

>a matter a fact on further reflection that interview was fucn
>dumb as shit

No the interview was perfect as shit for her character, just like the one with elliot in s1 was perfect for his.

she has to try to assert herself then get shut down, then she acquiesces to better reasoning.

the tests with the little girl let her get out her assertions, and then aquesce and do as told. it primed her to hear what white rose had to say, and then do as she was told.

fucking remember her listening to the self help tapes. c'mon. it's like yall believed she was realy a cutthroat executive like she did.

On top of all your examples, look at how she initially handled Ollie's fuck up. Not only was he cheating, he roped her dad into it AND threatened her. After all that, she was still willing (for a short time) to reconcile things with him.

She finds strength in her own agency, but she needs to be pointed in the "right" direction.

The "fuck society" scene with his psychiatrist basically outlined Elliot's motivations for the rest of the show.

The premise isn't what makes the show unique, it's the storytelling.

"Plucky protagonist takes on evil corporation" has been done ad nauseum in film and video games:

Resident Evil
Robocop
Blade Runner
Terminator
Lego Movie
Avatar
etc.

That's the premise I was referring to. It's fine if you're getting disillusioned with the storytelling, but the premise is nothing new whatsoever.

That's not the premise. Imcvspl is saying that everything is controlled by corpoterrorist and a totalitarian state ala 1984 and The Handmaid's Tale. In both those books and some others, it's done well, was fresh, and the end of Handmaid's is actually hella unique. But if corpototalitarianism is what THIS show becomes I'm going to find it boring/cop out ish

What you are talking about has been done to death as well. But what was fresh for me where these things: one, the major flaw in the savior character having mental illness. Two that the rebellion was actually successful. And three that they were inhabiting a "post-apocalypse" landscape that hadn't gone to shit.

>Resident Evil
No
>Robocop
No. You should probably go rematch that. Ain't not plucky shit about that protagonist
>Blade Runner
Uhh you should go rematch that. That's basically a sci-fish detective narrative.
>Terminator
Ok
>Lego Movie
Haven't watched
>Avatar
Fuck that movie
>etc.

I was already mostly in agreement with imcvspl's post #170. You were the one that (initially) disagreed with him, so that's when I replied to you.

Fine, screw the "plucky", but all those examples I cited are different takes on the "protagonist takes on evil corporation" theme. We can debate semantics on just how similar/dissimilar they specifically are to Mr Robot, but at the end of the day they all portray a similar theme.

> Imcvspl is saying that everything is controlled by corpoterrorist and a totalitarian state ala 1984 and The Handmaid's Tale. Honest question, what did you think E Corp was when you first started watching? Mr Robot portrays E Corp as basically Goldman Sachs, Apple and Google all rolled into one. They control the financial sector, hardware, software and who knows what else. I'm really baffled that the theme of "corpototalitarianism" is taking you by surprise because they kinda hammered you over the head with it from the very beginning. Elliot sees and hears "Evil Corp" everywhere for a reason, right?

> What you are talking about has been done to death as well. But what was fresh for me where these things: one, the major flaw in the savior character having mental illness. Two that the rebellion was actually successful. And three that they were inhabiting a "post-apocalypse" landscape that hadn't gone to shit.

Right. Check post #157, I already specifically mentioned that stuff:

-----------------------------------------
"The "post-apocalypse" premise has been explored ad nauseum in so much media but never in this fashion. Fight Club ended with the credit card buildings going down. Mad Max is a post-war world, not post-data. There are a lot of neat little nuggets in Mr Robot that show how this world develops. I loved that brief little scene where Elliot was walking through that daily swap meet, and you get glimpses of what, basically, is a reversion to the barter system."
-----------------------------------------

Sure, I agree with your three points. Those are all elements of great storytelling. Not sure how that's relevant to the original discussion though.

What I find interesting is that you initially disagreed with imcvspl's post #170, by calling it potentially "boring". You changed your mind when he expounded in post #179. What you failed to see is that I already touched upon a number of his points already in post #157:

-----------------------------------------
"And the scene that absolutely blew my mind last night was Price's proposal for government support of ECoin.

-----------------------------------------

There's more in that post too. Seriously, maybe you should read it.

but these are pretty much facts at this point.

White Rose is running shit in China
ECorp got the US by the balls
White Rose and ECorp are besties
White Rose is at the top of the dark army
ECorp seeded Elliot and Angela
White Rose gave f society the means
White Rose shut Angela the fuck up

Price pretty much said this shit has been in the works for ever, it just got accelerated by 5/9, they aren't reacting they are acting.

White Rose Elliot Phase 2 kicking off right after China bails out the US.

What else am I supposed to believe?

The elements you outlined clicked in my head :/

I was so happy to see a techno semi-leftist revenge/rebellion story done well. The surreality and uniqueness of how it addressed mental illness only made it better imo

But now, it's our parched American imaginary rearing it's ugly ass head again.

You right bruh

Now my only hope is white Rose smashes on Phillip, cause I hate that muthafucka so much

Where do you find Wellick in all this?

Negatives:

They didn't really answer much did they? Stage 2 was kind of a letdown but I assume its part of a bigger plan with Angela coming through.

Darlene seemed to own that investigation...I thought red head would come much tougher then that.

Positives:

LOL@them fucking with us. I howled when that bullet went off and you figured out the implicaton

I love how they re-introduced the other characters in the 'behind the scenes' credit.

Overall I thought it was a solid season though not as good as the first. Mainly because Season 1 felt less like a stop gap...this one def. left us with more questions then last season

If I'm not mistaken, the Sam Esmail dude (my apologies if I misspelled his name) was the sole writer AND director for the majority if not all of the episodes this year, correct? I could be wrong, but I don't think that was the case for the first season. Way too many navel gazing being weird for the sake of being weird aspects to this season compared to the first one IMO.

Then again, if ratings are huge for this second season, USA may just leave him alone to his devices again since I'm sure they want those ad dollars.

As is their forte, the more questions they answer the more that come up.

> Stage 2 was kind of a letdown but I assume its part of a bigger plan with Angela coming through.

I agree, Stage 2's reveal was a bit mundane, but at least the continuity is intact. I would imagine "Stage 3" will be the especially juicy reveal....

> Darlene seemed to own that investigation...I thought red head would come much tougher then that.

I think that was by design. Dom already knew pretty much everything surrounding fsociety, she just wanted to give Darlene a chance to disclose it herself. A bit under the radar this season, but Dom has proven herself to be exceptionally competent at what she does. She might be the only truly "good guy" in the show but we see where that got Hank Schrader....

> LOL@them fucking with us. I howled when that bullet went off and you figured out the implicaton

Such a great scene. The show is so incredibly effective at putting the viewer in Elliot's head. My wife and I were constantly second guessing whether or not Tyrell was real until the scene with Angela. Incredible storytelling.

> I love how they re-introduced the other characters in the 'behind the scenes' credit.

Loved it, especially now that we see Leon is still involved. His disappearance after protecting Elliot was a big hanging thread throughout the season. What's crazy is he (and/or Dark Army) tracked Mobley and Trenton for who knows how long.... is he going to watch over them now? Or eliminate them?

> Overall I thought it was a solid season though not as good as the first. Mainly because Season 1 felt less like a stop gap...this one def. left us with more questions then last season

Yup. This is a transition season into what I imagine will be a more plot-driven Season 3. The main purpose of this season was exploring the depths of Elliot's mental state and it feels (sorta) like that's resolved at the end of S2.

The biggest question is still Whiterose's motivations. Going back chronologically through the Dark Army timeline, this is roughly the order of how I think things happened (please correct me if I'm wrong):

- Minister of State Security Zhang founds Dark Army as Whiterose (critical unknown would be if Dark Army is government sponsored or not)

- Minister Zhang and Philip Price become political allies, involving stakes in nuclear power plant Washington Township. Potentially seeds planted for E Corp to manipulate the money supply

- Leaks occur at the plant, leading to covered up deaths of Elliot and Angela's parents

- Long gap, Cisco gets involved with Dark Army and Darlene

- fsociety founded by Elliot with intent to hack E Corp

- Darlene tasked with recruiting Dark Army via Cisco

- Cisco gains access to Allsafe via bootleg CD

- Dark Army agrees to hack China data center, then pulls out, then agrees again after Whiterose and Elliot meet

- 5/9 hack collapses public debt record

- At end of S1, Whiterose revealed as Minister Zheng. After Price mentions Ecoin, Whiterose's final quote: "The infamous Emperor Nero played an instrument very similar to the one she's playing... a lyre. Legend has it he played it as he watched... as he watched Rome burn."

- Price asked to step down as CEO, refuses, asks for government bailout

- Darlene hacks Dark Army texts, leading to Elliot meeting with Dark Army. Revelation that Elliot responsible for planning "Stage 2"

- After government bailout is refused, Price turns to Minister Zhang, leveraging the Washington Township to request $2,000,000,000,000 interest-free loan

- Loan facilitates government backing of ECoin loans

- Stage 2 intends to destroy the paper records. Tyrell stops Elliot from killing the malware by shooting him, using Elliot's **own instructions** as justification (major reference to Fight Club)

Whew. So why did I type all this? One of the theories floating around out there is that Whiterose and Elliot have been working together from the very beginning. I'm inclined to believe this is true now. Somewhere early in the timeline Whiterose and Elliot conceived the 5/9 hack. Minister Zhang is the public persona, intended to have the access to act on Whiterose's agenda (the final quote from S1 is the Minister Zhang persona letting slip Whiterose's motivations).

If this is the case, I think everything surrounding the Washington Township is a ruse, intended to maintain Price's trust in Zhang. If Price suspects anything of Zhang, then Zhang won't have the access to E Corp that Whiterose wants. This is why Dark Army does NOT want Angela bringing down E Corp via the lawsuit... because it would expose the facade that Minister Zhang wants to keep up in front of Price. And this also explains the cryptic room Whiterose used to discern Angela's trustworthiness, and why Angela is now seemingly aligned with Dark Army.

I have no idea if any of this is true and I could be way wrong. I wanted to recreate the timeline in my head to see if Dark Army's/Whiterose's motivations remained consistent. It's still unclear what exactly Whiterose wants to do (most likely taking Price/ECorp down in spectacular fashion, but with Chinese nationalism?), but it's fun to think about, hah.

This will indeed be a long, long year.

I don't think she cares much for Tyrell anymore (at least with her current knowledge).

Her main motivation to clear the charges is to get E Corp to release Tyrell's severance pay, which should be substantial.

When DA wants to take someone out, they do it hit-and-run style with anonymous, expendable agents.

It's clear that Elliot is extremely valuable to Dark Army (note how he wasn't physically threatened when he questioned them, unlike Cisco), so Leon's probably one of their most trusted operatives.

They knew people would expect that twist and be angling for Tyrell being in Eliot's mind so they dangled that infront of us only to swiftly shoot it in the gut...well done.

Wish the finale resolved more but it left us hanging although definitely more interested. That exchange between Tyrell and Angela at the end had me wylin. Also Joey showing up post credits was wild...although it means those two are dead which is a shame.

... that would explain Whiterose's motivations.

Once ECoin is established as the dominant currency after Stage 2, Dark Army reverses the 5/9 hack (with Trenton and Mobley's help of course), restoring the public debt record and confidence in the US Dollar. This would absolutely decimate ECoin and essentially put E Corp into financial ruin.

And from Minister Zhang's perspective, this would likely establish China as the global superpower with all the volatility in the US.

The elegant thing is that the postcredits scene in both season finales lend weight to the theory. I need to rewatch sometime with this in mind.

thats just relief and confidence?

i mean she was pretty much resigned to turning herself in and all that comes with it(including failing at her revenge plot essentially)

and one conversation basically reversed all that

i dunno just my guess

i enjoyed how we got their ages too she was born in 1988, darlene in 90. it adds to the "hyper-present-tense" of the show

In response to Reply # 0

Wellick and Elliot meet after 5/9 around a bunch of lawyers

Wellick talked to the bosses of E Corp, AND got fired, by Philip

the cops talked to him

he beat up that homeless man

Joanne threatened to kill Elliot if HE had killed Tyrell

Tyrell fucked ol' boy, Tyrell killed mujer on roof top

all the while you know Elliot was hacking or in jail

I have not idea why anyone would think that.

also makes the 80s show dream sequence a HUGE misdirection, because Wellick was in hiding of his own devices not cause Elliot/Mr. Robot killed him or had him hemmed up

seems like folk are letting the visual riddles play with their heads too much.

season 1 4.5/5
season 2 3.5/5, i feel like the Joey scene was the real climax and it happened in like episode 8

Like his dad, the possibility existed after Wellick disappeared (or died).

The show intentionally made you question if Wellick was dead for the entire second season, not the first.

You need to remember the sequencing of events.

i always thought the reveal was just about is he alive or dead, not the, is he part of Elliot's mind or not.

Tyrell's face was hilarious tho, when they got in the cab and Elliot started yelling. it was so clear he was like WTF is wrong with you, so about the plan...

dude playing Wellick has been beasting acting wise. the tears before he shot Elliot, berry berry good

Tyrell's such an interesting character in the show. He's Elliot's employer, then rival, then sympathetic figure then missing link. Like Dark Army (and Angela) his role has been shifting as time goes by. He's in love with Elliot now, but I don't think Elliot's sidekick is going to be his endgame either (especially with Joanna still out there).

And yeah, Martin Wallstrom has been fantastic. At least we'll get to see more of him next season, hah
