the prevailing theory was he was in an asylum by his own free will in order to work on a way of destroying Mr. Robot. jail was a close second, but that just opens up a whole new story as to...WHY.
it can't have anything to do with 5/9 otherwise he woulda presumably been frontpage news by now, Gideon wouldn't have been the fallguy, nor Tyrell been the only public mastermind. maybe freeing Vera from prison was the reason? can't see why he would *willingly* put himself into the prison system so it musta been a past fuckup come back and biting him on the ass.
