"Talking Cars On...What day is it now? Time makes no difference"

Had to do my SIL duties for my FIL and his '09 Nissan Murano. It reminded me how I dislike working on transverse V6 engines, as taking the intake plenum off was a PITA. At least the engine sat far enough forward from the firewall to make removing the plugs easy enough once the intake was off. Now I need to head to the dealership tomorrow morning and get a coil pack bolt, as it dropped while I was removing it and I am not crawling under that truck, pulling the splash guard and looking for it, especially when the dealership is 10 minute from the house. This should buy me a few more years brownie points...

Quite a few new car reviews out:

- Grand Wagoneer is huge. Don't like the window frames. Interior looks sick. But asking 'Slade money for a Stellantis product?
- GT86 looks to have more power to make it properly quick (well, finally quicker than a Miata), but will people actually buy it, or the BRZ?
- Lambo Countach looks sick. I'm not sure how 113 people had 2 mill sitting around to buy one right now, but the production run is all sold out.
- Pics of the new Z are floating around. Twin turbo, 400 hp? I'm starting to wish I had an 80's coke flow.

Oh, and I got fresh feet for the Fusion. What a difference tires make, for better and wose.

I was disappointed by the Countach

it looks like every other recent lambo, it's like a huracan special edition or something

the whole thing about the countach is that despite the fact that it pretty much sucked as a supercar, it was different as fuck from anything and everything else and the car they rolled out is not that

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at

i was thinking about the new corvette the other day. i think im fully onboard with it now. it is a corvette to me now but when it first came out i was like eh doesnt really scream corvette to me. it just took time.

kinda curious where they go with styling from here, i think the next one can really push forward more.

that thought had me thinking about ferrari lamborghini and porsche. they kinda dont really do new generations of specific models. they just go with completely new styling and call it something else. i know there are a few exceptions but they dont really worry about a model having to stick to a certain look. that said each of those brands do have pretty specific styling that is recognizable on most of their models. i dont think corvette really has that especially with going mid engine. maybe it will going forward.

back to the countach its.. okay. it definitely looks like a countach but its not really exciting. it is a step back to more plain styling compared to what im used to seeing lambo in the last 10 years. seemed like they were trying to put as many edges in different directions as possible on some of their recent cars.

not sure how they can make a new countach look different than anything else out there yet still be seen as a countach.

You can't redo the wedge, as there's already been a number of cars with that shape over the decades. You can't go too retro or you end up with the Thunderbird, and we see how that sold. Call it safe, sure. Call it boring? OK. Call it uninspired? Why not. Agree on all of those. And I'm sure the people that put deposits on them agree too. And yet, every one of these retro Countach's are booked to be sold, and the VW Group prints money. Funny how that works...

The evolution of the Vette will be interesting to see. There really wasn't much else that could be done past the C7. I think getting a better handle on a mid engine design and keeping the beancounters at bay could result in a cut rate R8. But this is GM we're talking about, so that may be a challenge.

anywayz, glad they went back to a more boxy shape. it looks nice. Kia came and shook the table with that telluride and made folks do better.

Look at the rear of the new Sorento. Between the taillights and the oval Kia badge, you'd swear it was an Explorer in drag. Been confused a few times seeing them on the road.

Boxy is DEF the move with the Pathfinder. I was super disappointed in this outgoing generation...it really didn't do the Pathfinder name justice.

I def. gotta give Kia props on their yellow LED headlight halo effect

no issues. she recently bought one from carmax. whole process was terrible.

I got my car through a buying service called Credit Union Car Finders. not quite like carvana, etc., but similar idea. I told them what I wanted and they search for it. I can bring financing or take their suggestions.

I love their reviews and how the cars are presented, made it easy to cull the ones that would be problematic.

Ended up getting a one owner used Toyota Prius, low miles, leather, roof, etc.

I want a vehicle that’s as rugged and accessible and sturdy as the xterr we got
But with a swivel chair and table like a VW Multivan
My kids held up like great. Only way they could’ve been better is in a fantasy world. But I want the family to be able to interact so the road isnt so hard for them.
My wife cant reach the rear facing car seat, so Im reaching back to entertain little guy and the back bench is tiny. So no adult can really be back there with them.

Power: 310 hp @ 6800 rpm
Torque: 266 lb-ft @ 2800 rpm

I don't know what the magic is...but once it gets going...IT GETS GOING...
I mean yeah, it's heavy as shit...but having had it fully loaded up with people and luggage and cargo, I was perfectly content with power reserves at highway cruising speeds.

For comparison, my 2008 VW Touareg is packing like 350HP and similar torque as the Chevy I think....but it also burns MORE gas and can't haul as many people or as much cargo and I have to put premium gas in it.

found em:
Horsepower 350 hp @ 6700 rpm
Torque 324 lb-ft @ 3500 rpm

since release in 2018.

It's a 3.6L V6. That's what he meant about giving him pause...at least that's what he wrote

https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/chevrolet/traverse

I researched the hell out of these things lol...
But I realize it's going to take some years before a clear picture is painted.

On the flip side....I drove (and still own 1) VW's for the past 18 years so.....compared to those this is a cakewalk so far.

I still stay with an full extended warranty just in case.

Oil and timing chains. Assuming you kept up with maintenance, you MAY be good. But too many horror stories of the opposite would make me think twice at a used one without a detailed maintenance record.

Other than that I dig 'em. Got friends with an Outlook and an Enclave that love 'em. Do they take care of 'em? Eh....

Pads and rotors all around. Went back and forth on getting either slotted or drilled and slotted or sticking with blanks. Just stuck with the blanks. Nothing in my daily commute justifies the tradeoffs (noise, pad life, dust) besides looks. Only wish they came in while I was off last week. But it was 95+ with 1000% humidity last week, so I may have passed out in my garage.

Debating how to bleed the brakes though. I've got a fluid vacuum setup, but I'm not entirely sure mu compressor has enough CFM to pull the fluid through well enough. On the flip side, I do have the Motive adapter that fits the brake cylinder. .I could run that to the compressor and pressurize and bleed that way, though I'd have to keep removing the adapter, checking and filling the cylinder, then repeating the process.

Getting older, having arthritis and working on concrete sucks ass. I was beat all Sunday. But got the whole brake job done in more hours than I wanted. Started later, took my time, got interrupted a few times, but fluid flush, rotors and pads all done just in time for my in-laws to come get the Murano I worked on earlier in the week.

I'm seriously considering getting some QuickJacks come bonus time. Being on a stool is better than on your knees trying to unbolt caliper brackets. If I ever hit the lottery and move to a new property, I'm having a garage with a lift and all the Snap-On tools I could want (although that may take all the lottery money)

Most people that could afford them and bought them knew what they had and maintained them. Fill that V8 up and let 'er rip. Prelude would be next, but age and the whole tuner craze may make it harder to find one that wasn't dogged. As much as I love the MR2 (especially the 2nd gen), I'd only get one in Gran Turismo. They fun, but you need to respect physics in a small mid engined car like that. Won't take much speed for a disaster in that thing

In response to Reply # 0

did the swap myself. found out they had one speaker connected backwards. its not as loud now but theres a bigger range. before i turned it up to 5 and it was pretty loud. i gotta turn it up to like 20 to get to the same level now. i can turn it up all the way without distorting but its too loud for my tastes.

i like the sound.

the other amp was faulty. it would suddenly cut out in some speakers. keeping the back seat down so the amp would be flat helped some but even then it would do it sometimes.

ive been keeping the seat up and so far it has been good. i did hear one loud pop once when i turned it back on somewhat quickly after i had turned the car off. i dont like that.

hit 20k in the car. still kinda weird to me since before this car the lowest miles i had bought car at was 60k+

starting to think again about cashing in some of this equity but i dont know. might just refinance and look into a separate private loan.

39. "I Need A Vehicle But Have No Proof Of Employment"
In response to Reply # 0

At the beginning of the year my car got repossessed cause I was behind on payments but told the lender why but they said it was okay on the phone if I pay later but I guess without having that in writing, they was just bullshittin' me.

I was late with payment cause back in early December my battery died on me, had to get a new one, once I got a new one found out why it died cause the starter was draining it, so I had to get a new starter; so I ended up paying $150 for a new battery and $550 for a new starter and towing fee.

Then the first week in January my insurance double charged me by mistake which ended up putting my bank account in the negative, so now I had to pay for $25 for the overdraft, and I had 10 working days to get it back into the positive or my bank would cancel my account even though I've had an account with them since 1995; the insurance company decided instead of putting that money back into my account they will just pro-rate it and charge me 1/6 less than normal, the fuckers.

I told my car lender all this and though they was on my side until the morning of January 20th, I go outside and my car was gone, thought somebody stole my car but found out from the police it got repo'ed.

So anyway, I've been without a vehicle since, and just been riding the bus, walking, & getting rides from friends and co-workers while saving up; but my recent employer pays me in cash (aka under the table, which means he's not reporting my income to the gov't) and doesn't want to put me on the payroll right now, so while I got a large sum for a down payment cause my bank said since my car got repossessed it just killed my credit score and I would probably need at least 20% down for them to even work with me on financing a new-used vehicle.

During the seven months, I found a way to boost up my credit score by 100 points but the only problem is that I don't have proof of employement, I could buy a old used car that's way cheap but I'm not really in the mood to do that shit again (yeah I've done it before and put more into a junk car than it was worth in the three years I had it thinking it would be a great way to have transportation but being able to save up for something newer and better) lol.

I want to get a Crossover/SUV, I've been checking online and seeing some great prices for ones outside my area in other cities (my city it seems prices for the same vehicles are almost $1000 to $5000 more, or has way more miles on them), Carvana has some great choices but they're constantly selling them as quickly as they post them up.

I'm not sure what to do right now, need some ideas & suggestions from the GD team .

In my experience (if I'm right about which state you're in), they jack up the prices because you pretty much have to drive to get around for the most part.

I would probably keep saving up until you can get over the hump moneywise... until your employer stops drinking pee with regard to putting you on the payroll.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

My wife has been talking about the Model 3 and Y for a year or so, and wants to get rid of her minivan. After doing some research we ended up ordering a Model Y for her (currently a 4 month wait.)

Also I went ahead and paid the 100 deposit to reserve a Cybertruck…I know I know. The design is incredibly divisive, but I just love it. It looks like what I thought the future would be back when I was a kid in the 80’s. My current car is a Lexus ES F Sport that I bought new in 2019 (and still love.) Given all the delays and timeline on the Cybertruck my guess is the earliest I’d have one GFR on getting in line is around 2024 or 2025, and by that point maybe I’ll be ready for a new ride.

The $100 is fully refundable so at any point I decide against it, no loss to me. The only downside is the reservation doesn’t lock in the price - the dual motor AWD version is currently 49k, but I’m guessing that when it releases that price will go up significantly. My then maybe I’ll change my order to a Model S instead. Or something else…We’ll see!

other Tesla folks is the one downside. I’m in Michigan though, where they JUST started being able to sell them in state. So there aren’t many here at this point. We were in Cali earlier this summer and we’re shocked seeing them EVERYWHERE.

We’ll see. My wife started this when she fell in love with the Model Y. I’m pragmatic - I got her to look at other electric car options. But in doing the research, Tesla is just pretty far ahead of the game at this point. Also doing the research made me realize that EVs are clearly the near future, and by the time I’m ready for something newer than my 2019 Lexus an EV will be more of a “default” new car option.

at audi is so much better thaan what i've experienced.

I went to two dealerships one in NY and one in PA and PA let me take a 20 minute test drive, just me and my girl and these dudes ain't even check our drivers license. In NY they didn't check our license but the sales lady hopped in with us, let me get on the highway and kick it into Dynamic driving mode. I'm used to 10 minute test drives on a side street smh.

Finance manager (usually the worst part of the experience) didn't try to upsell shit. Dude was basically like "do you want me to tell you about any add ons or nah" i was like nah, he's like cool, saves us both 15 minutes.

The rate they got from the bank also came in .5% higher than what i wanted so he took the difference off the price of the car, no questions asked.

Best part is i got loan through AUDI and then an unsecured (i didn't even know that was a thing) loan through lightstream so i paid off the Audi loan and now have the discounted price on the car and the lower rate.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

He probably got a kickback for getting you into an Audi loan. But they'll take it back once it disappears from the books.

I loved the B5 body-style A4's when I got out of college. I wasn't trying to take on a payment yet but I decided to test drive one anyway. There was also a Porsche and BMW dealership next door (I think all owned by the same group) so I decided to try to get a test drive of a 3 series as well.

I stood in the lobby of the BMW dealership for about 5 minutes and nobody approached. Asked the receptionist if anyone could help me and they all said they were busy. Ok.

Walked over to the Audi dealership and was greeted warmly at the door. I told the salesman up front that I loved the A4 but wasn't ready for payment just yet. He was like "Cool, do you want a test drive?" Of course!

Took a good 15 minute test drive on the main road while he talked about all the features. We came back and he said come back when you're ready.

Fast forward 2 years and I'm finally tired of commuting to work in a beater S-13 with a blown head gasket and leaking radiator. I sense the car is seriously about to give up the ghost so I drive back to that Audi dealership and the car basically dies as I'm pulling into the parking lot. I didn't have the original salesman's card but I was greeted warmly by a different one. Probably the easiest deal he'd had all week bc I was deadset on driving home in the A4 that night.... but of course they had to do some last minute stuff to it so I technically couldn't pick it up to the next day lol

Anyway, loved the car and would probably still have it if it hadn't been totaled in an accident. Maybe 10 years later, I decide to test drive a 5 series. We get in the car and I let the BMW salesman know that I'm not looking to buy right now but I will soon. He says "oh, ok... take a right here.... then take a right here... then take a right here." He had me basically take a 5 minute ride around the block!

After that, I just said fuck BMW as a brand. You don't want one with an expired warranty unless you're extremely handy and I'm not setting foot in another dealership. I'd still fuck with Audi though.

ago and doing test drives at all the luxury dealers, and it was interesting to see how each manufacturer has their own separate culture. I test drove a Porsche Panamera (Porsche dealer side by side to the Audi dealer since it's the same company) and they were so nonchalant. Didn't ask for a license, told me to take my time with it, recommended a drive route including both freeway and street driving, etc. Even let me drive a couple different models back to back because there's a huge difference in engine options/price.

My experience at multiple BMW dealerships was the same as yours. Hard to get anyone at all to help, and when I finally got someone they acted like it would be such a pain to have me test drive a 5 series. Made me sit and wait, and when I finally got a test drive the sales rep actually drove it out of the lot instead of me, and then eventually parked and let me drive it a bit before having me go straight back.

The Mercedes dealer I went to was better than the BMW dealers, but they were REALLY salesy. It was like stepping into a time machine and going to a dealer in the early 90s or something. He tried all of the stereotypical pressure tactics to get me to buy an E class that day. Asked me about the other cars I was comparing, and then he printed off a comparison sheet for me on this old black and white step-above-dot-matrix printer to prove that the E class was the best. In general he was talking to me like the internet didn't exist for me to have already done my own research.

I had a great experience at the Lexus dealership. Sales rep knew instantly that I'd done my research, just needed test drives and logistics. Decision ended up being between the Panamera and ES350 F-Sport - went with the Lexus based on the price along with maintenance costs of the Porsche.

I had the salesman driving vehicles to my house for me to test before we finally landed on the Chevy. I don't know if that was a dealer specific thing or what but it was def. something that won me over. Didn't set foot into the dealership until I'd made a choice and went to pick it up.
Dude brought me 2 Buicks, a GM and two Chevy's....even offered to bring me a Jeep from their sister dealership.

I'm starting to outgrow the Civic. I need something to haul plywood and other construction materials, as well as band gear and a PA. Also need a tow hitch for a trailer to haul a few motorcycles every now and again.

Truck (like an F150) would be cooler, but a van seems more versatile for my need, especially with all the rain we get here. Being able to haul plywood and wood longer than 8' would be helpful w/ the truck tho.

Probably buying used, but if I went new I like the looks and price of the Nissan NV200. Anyone have experience with these?

had to find a used car under $10k for my daughter (she wrecked the Honda Pilot we handed down to her, *real tears*).

anything good on AutoTrader is already gone by the time you call.

fortunately, one of the Toyota Corollas I called and struck out on was from the same dealer I bought my Civic from 3 years ago. they had my profile so gave me a call on the next used Corolla they were getting (same guy who sold me my Civic).

2010, 148k miles, cost me $2k more than it would have last year but I looked around their lot and counted 8 used cars and 12 new cars TOTAL. I asked the sales rep and he told me all the 2022 arrivals they were waiting on have already been sold. even all the showroom cars were gone. I sucked it up and signed away.

don't get in an accident right now. make that repair. it is looking bleak out there, my friends.

58. "Renting a Tesla Model Y through Turo this week - my goodness."
In response to Reply # 0

As mentioned up above, we just ordered one for my wife - currently forecasting delivery in February/March. Given that we'd never driven any EV, or even been able to check out a Y in person, it was worth spending a couple hundred on Turo to rent one.

What we rented is brand new - under 1000 miles on it, and exactly the specs of what my wife ordered. Long range, AWD, upgraded wheels, etc. There's some things that will take getting used to - mostly the touchscreen and almost EVERYTHING being controlled through it. Most of that type of stuff is automatic once you've set up your profile, but when renting it and being new it was confusing at first. The regenerative braking took a couple drives to get used to, but I really like it now.

But the biggest takeaway is the acceleration...my goodness. This isn't even the performance model, and it's just so quick from a stop. The stated 0-60 is 4.1 seconds (the performance model is 3.3 seconds) which is really fast for a CUV, but the spec doesn't really do it justice. The power is IMMEDIATE. Throws you back in the seat with how quick it is off the line. A better comparison to explain it would be a 0-30 mph time if those nuymbers were out there - because it's like the acceleration is linear instead of having a curve. I'd seen reviewers explain it, but it's another thing actually driving to see it.

Another reason we wanted to rent to test it out was to see the size. The interior size is deceptively large. I'm a big guy - 6'5" tall and weigh around 275 lbs, and I have plenty of room. I can even sit in the backset behing my own front seat setting and still have room. Looking at it from the outside it doesn't seem like it should be that big, but because there's no engine, no transmission, etc there is a good deal more space for the designers to work with.

the third row is ONLY for young kids. And not even babies because full car seats would be cramped back there. But like age 2-10. Which to be fair is on par with most CUV’s that have a 3rd row - I know that was the case with the Lexus RX 350L we also drove.

In response to Reply # 63

actually driving one and feeling that immediate torque was just something else. Then in addition to how quick it is out the gate, the fact that there’s no transmission, so the acceleration is just perfectly smooth is something else.

And then going back to my gas car afterwards made it even more clear. And I have a nice car. But when you pass someone while driving a regular car you floor it, wait for the power to kick in, and THEN change lanes to pass. In that Tesla? Just immediate power out the gate. Completely changes the approach to making a left turn with oncoming traffic as well. Zero lag, just go time. And again, this wasn’t even the performance model…

It's a weird time in the auto industry in general in terms of used car value my wife's old 2015 Chrysler minivan that we're selling to get a Y is worth around $5k more now than it was two years ago when we first looked at selling it.

But from what I've found, even separate from this current used car market Tesla cars hold value like crazy, since they don't have engines that die the way an internal combustion engine will along with all the over the air updates that keep it current.

Like MEAT said above it was significantly more new. Ours are also pre-autopilot and can have more issues than newer ones. (All door handles will be replaced, ha ha)

In 2017 I paid $43k for it with 23,000 miles. It has most options except performance. I came from a Mazda 3 with 342K miles, I hold onto cars and am not really concerned about their value. Free supercharging has been great, we take it all over for family road trips.

That said the 3 & Y have held onto their value crazy well, I've seen quite a few over the years selling for more used than new. Wouldn't be surprised if that's also true now due to the wait.

And yeah - used Model Ys are selling significantly over the new price due to the long current build time. While we are waiting I signed up for daily inventory updates on a site that compiles nationwide inventory for both new and used Teslas, and it’s consistent. Every few days a new Y will show up on the page because it’s a demo model with like 2-300 miles on it, but they’ve been gone instantly.

reviews I've seen comparing charging options make sense.

At this point I'm trying to convince my wife to switch her order from the Long Range Y to the Performance based on the delivery dates. Her Y LR is currently scheduled for late March, while they are delivering new Performance Ys in December. $7000 price increase, but we were paying $2k for the upgraded wheels while the Performance comes standard with even nicer wheels. So a $5k premium to get a better car in December vs. March...

i was impressed with the sound. i didnt bother to check the eq but it was hitting plenty hard. not the same as a dedicated subwoofer but enough where theres not really a good enough reason to fill up your trunk with a subwoofer.

whenever i get a new car i do hope to get one with premium sound. i do not want to deal with another aftermarket installation.

One is a recent upstart that is more of a tech company than a car company, run by a douchebag, and known to have questionable quality.

Easy choice for me.

Kudos to anyone who buts or boycotts based on a CEO’s likability but for me it would come down to value, maintenance cost and how the car drives.

is there any reason besides the way the look? Just seems like a bad idea and the tires would wear out faster.

76. "I think you're referring to negative camber"
In response to Reply # 75

Performance cars and definitely race cars use a lot of negative camber because at high cornering forces you need it to actually have the full contact patch of the tire evenly touching the road surface for optimal grip and tire wear.

For "normal" driving, you don't really need it and it will cause the inside shoulder of the tire to wear faster.

A lot of people take it to extremes just for looks, which IMO is idiotic. Lowering a car too much also gives you/requires more negative camber. It ruins any performance the car had and yes will just eat through tires.

2017 XLE

we also have a '14 Lexus RX450 which was good for the early years, but now the boys are turning out to be tall as fuck (the 4 year old is as tall as an 8 year old) we need the space.

Both cars are set up to carry both boys so theres always some coverage no matter who has a car.

wife was not into a boring toyota, but I'm thinking about practicality and this fuckin' ride has it all. The kids wrecked the interior after a weekend out - I was able to dump everything out because the mats are rubber with a high side wall. It was like dumping a plate into trash.

Both cars are hybrids, but the highlander has a ton more get up. It's quick and stable. The sound system is really fucking good, I heard things in familiar songs I don't even hear on my monitors.

Both the Toyota and the Lexus are both the sorts of cars people drive well past 250k and 350k miles...and then buy them again, but I see why the Highlander is a cult item.

All features, no frills, shit just works.

the Lexus is technically a Toyota. difference is mostly some engine displacement and badge prestige. especially with modern Toyota models.

good choice btw

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I just do not feel like getting a DSP and tapping the speaker outputs and rerunning wires everywhere. Makes me miss my SL2 days when I had the entire system was redone. Crutchfield was my friend. Oh well

I had no idea until I started looking did I realize a vintage version of one of these cards would be big money. I could have sworn I would see them for low money being sold used growing up.
