"Trotz don't L.I.E.: 2018 NHL Offseason Poast"

Barry to Long Island.

Grubauer to Colorado.

Orpik's $5.5M contract off the books.

So far so good.

Wonder where Karlsson ends up.

In response to Reply # 0

I wasn't expecting much trade activity at the draft but perhaps a little more than this.

Hamilton+Fox+Ferland for Hanifin+Lindholm

To me this seems like one of those "shake it up" deals where the pieces are pretty even on paper, kind of like the Buffalo-Winnipeg deal a few years back.

Kovalchuk to the Kings, three years 18.75M. A lot of people complaining about the deal but they had no reasonable expectation of value here. Tons of teams make Kovy an offer. Three years I'd say was the shortest term that would get it done. $6.25M is a pretty big cap hit but with competition I don't think it was going anywhere under $5.5M. Kovy was very close to signing in LA when he inked his deal with the Devils. LA and Boston were the biggest suitors among many it seems. Obviously the downside is that this guy has not always been the most engaged player and he is much older now than the last time we saw in the NHL. The upside is that the Kings offense and power play were both extremely inconsistent and even at 75% of what he was, he would help both immensely. The cap hit is worth it because they didn't have to sacrifice any assets to get him, but now let's see if he can still play.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

From what I gather they were looking at Grubauer but didn't want to take on Orpik's contract. Good deal for the Avs I think because they can actually use Orpik on a nightly basis and upgrade their situation in goal. Does not bode well for Varly's health/future.

Trading Orpik was huge, I think they could have signed Carlson either way but then they would have been filling out their roster with ELCs. Now they have flexibility to ice pretty much the same team as last year plus maybe another forward just by swapping Orpik out for an ELC defenseman

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

COL already put him on waivers. I think they're going to buy him out. He might actually come back to DC for like $1.5M or something. Wild.

Getting a 2nd and moving Orpik for Grubauer is a great deal for the Caps.

Seems odd that they would waste cap space like that but whatever.

Nice deal for the Caps, they could have gotten a little more in picks but needed to move that contract. 8/64M for Carlson now. He earned it.

They will return their top 9 forwards and top 4 defenders from last year. Also got DSP back even though he got better offers elsewhere.

That’s life when you win the cup in what was supposed to be your down year.

Sucks for Islander fans.

Mildly dickish move by JT to not let the Islanders trade him at the deadline. He knew they were going to suck. So he could have made his decision back then.

Helluva top 9 Toronto has. Gonna need a little defense though.

Not sure what he was expecting as far as being able to stay or what he had against being a rental for a team with a real chance to win. I get not wanting to be traded where you ultimately go, but why short the Isles? He gave them a chance I guess but like I said I can't see what more he wanted from them.

Toronto is in a great spot for this year with their forwards, they have money for Nylander and should have a great group. Their defense is still trash but much like Philly the guy they needed wasn't really out there. So they went for the best available player and got him. It'll be interesting to see how they ditch the last year of Marleau's contract next summer.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Like you said, isles did all that could reasonably be expected and he still left, for less money too.

There’s no reason he couldn’t have made that decision in February.

I think he was just noncommittal, which is a shitty thing for a franchise player to be.

JVR comes back to Philly, kinda odd as they have a lot of forwards but you get a chance to add a 30+-goal guy and you take it, I guess. They still have more money to work with, too. I would love to see them get in on Karlsson but we'll see.

Wings bring Green back after nearly trading him last year (though presumably he'd have been a rental). They also bring back Thomas Vanek, increasing his chances of being traded at the deadline again. Jonathan Bernier is their new backup goalie.

In response to Reply # 0

Seemed like Winnipeg was getting their cap straight to sign Stastny and extend Hellebuyck but I guess not. Decent value for an open market signing (previous deal was 4/28M, though he didn't quite play up to it overall) and a good fit for Vegas. High character, two-way, 200-foot player. Very nice fit for them on the second line which appears to be losing Perron (returning to STL) and Neal (TBD). They can use Haula on a wing and have to hope Tatar plays a larger role.

They also re-signed Ryan Reaves, two-year deal.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 0
Sun Jul-01-18 04:31 PM by ConcreteCharlie

Chicago fills their perceived need for an experienced winger with dead legs and their very real need for a solid backup goalie.

Roussel to Vancouver I think is an underrated signing. They needed some muscle since Dorsett's abrupt retirement and here they get a guy who can score some, too. I would not be surprised to see him set some career highs, nothing crazy, just a little better than he has done in the past.

Hutton to Buffalo is interesting. We will see if he is for real or not. He will face a lot of rubber up there. Also interesting to me from a Blues' perspective. Maybe he wanted the chance to be anointed the starter? I don't see why they wouldn't keep him in the fold, he outplayed Allen last year and they were priced where they could have been kept as a tandem if they didn't want to commit fully.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

$4M and $5M cap hits respectively. Perron had a great season, it'll be interesting to see how they use him in light of his playmaking ability last year. Bozak comes in, personally I would have preferred Stastny and it's not close but they got a first and a lower cap hit (enough to six a bottom six/third pairing guy), so there's that, I guess.

In response to Reply # 0

As expected the Pens add Jack Johnson. Not a huge fan of his but this is a fair signing and he should fare well there.

Neal looks like 5 at 5.75M. I wouldn't have paid that but I guess there is something to be said for not giving up any assets? Not a deep FA pool

The Blues replace Stastny with O'Reilly. Cost was basically a first, a second and some dispensable veterans. Pretty good deal. Buffalo gets a decent haul of future and will probably end up with more of them out of the deal. I dunno, at some point they have to try to win

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

giving up assets for him? Paying him $3.3M/yr until he's 36? Playing him on anything other than the bottom pair?

Pointless and might actively make the Pens worse.

Good.

What Johnson was so innocuous, Jesus Christ, and if they are such longtime friends why couldn't he just not take it in the worst way possible and also avoid crying about it?

What Rutherford said was meant to rattle their cage a little ... so why respond? Torts couldn't be like Tite today and let the appropriate person respond, Jarmo, could he? Jarmo said he was taken aback and would call to clarify the remarks. Torts tell him to shut the fuck up like half a dozen times on the record.

I just want to clarify also that Torts, unlike most guys who play tough in the media, is sincerely a prick.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

These are the guys who turned Schultz into a big-money player, got serious mileage out of Daley and earned Ron Hainsey a contract instead of fading into Bolivian. But yeah, Johnson is trash.

If I were a team looking at the open market I would sure as shit handle Hertl 5.75M or 6M per sooner than I'd give it to James Neal. I still feel confident that Hertl is going to bust out, he just has so many tools offensively and his defensive game has improved, too.

In response to Reply # 0

Beagle cashes in and the Canucks are trying to build a group with character in the wake of the Sedins' departure. They need their prospects to hit because they didn't have a shot at any of the bigger names on the market and let's face it there were only a small handful of guys worth signing. 4/12M for Beagle, I think the same deal as Roussel.

Grabner to AZ, three years just north of $10M. I think this is a good value signing. He's fast, he kills penalties and he can put the puck in the net. Not much of a passer but for 3M-ish and willing to sign with a bad team he is a nice value.

37. "Trade watch: Karlsson, Panarin, Pacioretty"
In response to Reply # 0

In my heart I am hoping Kane and Panarin are reunited but I don't see it. Nashville would also be a fun but unlikely landing spot for him. I think Boston has a pretty strong shot at him and they have some guys like Krug, Heinen and Bjorkstrand (one of those guys+another peripheral piece like a pick) that could possibly get it done. You know Tampa would love to have him also and may intensify their interest now with Boston kicking his tires. I would not go buying a new house if I were JT Miller, of they could move a roster defenseman+futures.

Karlsson I still think Vegas. Ottawa is such a dumpster fire right now that they are trying to unload contracts (Ryan) or suck as much as they can out of the one *big* asset they have. They will sell off other guys also but Karlsson is their shot to really get a quick rebuild. Vegas can give them a lot of futures but I doubt they will take Ryan's deal or give them much in the way of roster players. McPhee has to identify and overachiever and send him away. I guess they also have to give some thought to Tatar's role going forward though the way things look he'll slot into their new second line on the right side with Haula at LW and Stastny at center. Devils could be a player for Karlsson and I wouldn't count out Philly. The Flyers have money, they might even be just dumb enough to step in and take Ryan since they just got out from under some shitty contracts and seem to be addicted to cumbersome deals.

Patches is the weirdest one. The Kings have been calling on him but I can't see them moving a D for him. Possibly a prospect forward plus Forbort? The money would work but I think the Habs would probably want something a little more concrete for their captain. I can't believe Bergervin still has a job.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

39. "TB moves in front in Karlsson sweepstakes. Montreal in peril"
In response to Reply # 0

Looks like Tampa has moved in front in the Karlsson talks. From what I can infer they will need a third team. Basically Ottawa is looking for promising players still under team control (heading toward RFA) so will be fairly low salaries and probably not Gourde who, despite not having much NHL experience, is a bit older player. Sergachev in motion again?

If that is the case, and it sounds like it is, then Tampa will need to get a third team involved. They only have about $3M in cap room, Karlsson's current hit is $6.5M and it will jump to $10M+ next year presumably, when Gourde, Point and Kucherov are all up for new deals and they will probably have to get real cheap on defense behind their big three of Hedman, McDonagh and Karlsson. That likely means dumping Ryan Callahan's contract. He is a solid player but very expensive for the rule they use him in, and he's under contract through 2020 so if they don't move him now they will have to under duress next year.

So expect a deal with young players headed toward RFA and futures to Ottawa, Karlsson to Tampa and then Tampa most of the aforementioned package for Ottawa as well as some asset to get a team to take Callahan. Oddly I think the Rangers and Canadiens may be in the best position to take Callahan's salary as he could be useful for them, both would love to add futures and both have plenty of cap space. Montreal has over $12M in space still and could have more to start the season with Weber needing surgery on his meniscus (will be out about six months ... can someone explain the rationale behind the Subban to me again?).

Montreal continues to have issues finding a good package for Pacioretty. Lots of teams are interested but they recognize that with just one year on his deal, the clock is already ticking for Montreal to make a move. It isn't a situation like Colorado with Duchene where there was not much urgency, they need to find a suitor soon or risk trading him as a rental at the deadline. I think that's a particularly bad move because of the way he played as the season progressed last year. If he checks out completely, that'll only lower his value. There's also some rumblings about the return of Andrei Markov, though Bergevin has slammed the door in his face a couple of times already. I doubt it will happen.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I really like Ken Holland, obviously very accomplished and he is also very nice and professional in my experience. But this has gone on a long time. They missed a big opportunity not kicking up with a "promotion" (higher title, less personnel responsibility) and putting Yzerman in that role. They basically made it Holland's call and he declined (he denies this but it's pretty widely considered to be true).

Karlsson there would probably end up a rental anyway. They gotta do it from the ground up. At least they finally had a good draft.

And as shitty contracts go, he is still a good 2nd/3rd line tweener and PK guy. It's not like some of these shitty deals that go to LTIR or really can't play but are physically able to do so (the worst kind/hardest to unload). He would make the Rangers, Devils or Habs a better team. I think he'd be a particularly good fit for the Habs. He would immediately double the number of balls on the roster (Gallagher has a pair now they get two more).

It was incredible’: Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin brings Stanley Cup to his homeland

By Isabelle Khurshudyan
July 8 at 4:53 PM

MOSCOW — The silver sparkled in the late Sunday afternoon sunlight as the Stanley Cup made its way toward Red Square. Its bearer wore jeans, a black polo and a flat-brimmed NHL All-Star Game cap as he strode toward the gated entrance with a small entourage circling him — makeshift security. But despite his otherwise nondescript appearance, the hulking chalice made Alex Ovechkin unmistakable, one of Russia’s most recognizable athletes carrying hockey’s grandest trophy to his country’s most iconic spot.

He immediately was swarmed as people tried to shove their way through the cameras following him to touch the trophy or the man. They pleaded for a photo or an autograph. They yelled their congratulations. “Great job, Sanya!” some shouted, calling him by his Russian nickname.

“Alex Ovechkin is in Red Square with the Stanley Cup,” one woman frantically whispered into her cellphone as she tried to keep up with his brisk strides.

With St. Basil’s Cathedral in the background, Ovechkin stopped, and his agent and a Washington Capitals spokesman attempted to keep the crowd back. Ovechkin asked the people posted behind him to clear a path so that the cathedral could be visible.

“Can I please get a picture?” he asked of what had become a mob.

The crowd obliged, parting to create a clearing. He then hoisted the Stanley Cup above his head to the sound of cheers. Phones followed the Cup up to get the shot of Ovechkin finally returning home with the prize so many expected he would claim one day.

It has been a month since the Capitals won their first Stanley Cup championship, and in a weekend 13 years in the making, Ovechkin was awarded two days with the Stanley Cup in his hometown, a tradition for the winning team’s captain. For one of Moscow’s most beloved sons, it represented a prophecy fulfilled.

“I wanted to be the guy who brings the Cup,” said Ovechkin, who had promised as much as recently as last summer.

Ovechkin returned Saturday to the Dynamo hockey club facility where he played as a teenager and where there’s a large photo of him in the main lobby that he signed, “Thanks for everything.” When Ovechkin was 14, Hall of Famer Igor Larionov, who won three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings, visited Dynamo and spoke of his career and his championships.

As Ovechkin walked around his old locker room a year ago, he told Dynamo Coach Vladimir Vorobiev that he would be back with the Stanley Cup and they would drink beer together. On Saturday, Ovechkin had the Stanley Cup to his left with a tray of food on his right as his van pulled up to the training center, an arch with light blue and white balloons and a pedestal for the trophy awaiting his arrival at the front of the building. He went through the back entrance for a few quiet moments. This was where he ran laps after every practice and “hated it,” Ovechkin said, still able to picture his father sitting on the bench watching him.

He set the Stanley Cup on a couch before he picked it up again and carried it up the stairs, where Dynamo has its museum. The signed jerseys and sticks of notable former players are in glass cases, and Ovechkin immediately picked out Capitals teammate Nicklas Backstrom’s display from when they played there together during the 2012-13 NHL lockout.

With the Stanley Cup still in his grasp, he turned in place as his eyes scanned the room, perhaps considering that a photo of him visiting with the Stanley Cup soon would be proudly displayed. After he told a group of kids in Dynamo jerseys to follow their dreams and then posed for photos with the Stanley Cup, Ovechkin laced up skates and carried the trophy onto the rink where he once practiced, hoisting it up as someone on the bench warned him not to fall because the blades were dull. He then returned to the locker room, set the Stanley Cup down and clinked frosted mugs with Vorobiev.

“You know, Alex is a big star,’ Vorobiev said. “When he’s young, every guy who play with him, is working with him, he know he’s going to be a big star.”

The Stanley Cup made its first voyage to Russia in 1997, the summer that Detroit won with five Russians, and Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin brought the trophy to Moscow the past two summers. But perhaps no player had higher hopes placed on him than Ovechkin, the first overall pick in 2004 who became one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history. He first saw the trophy when he visited Toronto’s Hockey Hall of Fame as a Capitals rookie. Apparently unconcerned with superstition, he touched it.

“I knew one day we would win it,” he said.

It was after 1 p.m. on Saturday when the Stanley Cup finally made it through customs and Moscow traffic and into Ovechkin’s hands again. He set it on a table as he passed through a metal detector for a gathering of fans at the Moscow State University campus, there for a viewing party of Russia’s World Cup quarterfinal soccer game against Croatia. As he lifted it above his head for the crowd, one man yelled to him, “We’ve been waiting for you our entire lives.”

Ovechkin posed for more than 3,000 photos as part of an event organized by the Putin Team, a social media movement Ovechkin started in November to support Russian President Vladimir Putin. He shook so many hands that he later asked for a wet napkin. The night finished with a private party at a ritzy karaoke club with a guest list that included famous Russian actors, musicians, Capitals teammates Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dmitry Orlov and former Washington center Sergei Fedorov.

As Ovechkin waited to make his grand entrance and carry the Stanley Cup into the ballroom, the master of ceremonies introduced him: “This is a moment to remember. He’s been waiting for this Cup for a long, long time.”

After a hectic and public first day with the trophy, Ovechkin chose to make Sunday more private. He took the Stanley Cup to a closed hockey game with high-ranking government officials, including Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev — but not Putin. He visited his family’s childhood apartment, laying with the trophy on the twin bed he used to sleep in. Then he and his parents went to the cemetery where his older brother, Sergey, rests after he died of a blood clot after a car accident when Ovechkin was 10. The Stanley Cup minders stayed in the car as Ovechkin carried the trophy to the headstone.

“It’s hard,” Ovechkin said. “But I think it was very important for me personally because he’s my brother obviously. He’s motivated me to play hard and give what I can on the ice.”

He then took the Stanley Cup to the most public place in the country, where the Kremlin walls enclose a cobblestone square with the colorful St. Basil’s Cathedral at the center. Slava Fetisov and Larionov took photos there when they brought the trophy to Moscow as part of the Red Wings’ Russian Five with Fedorov, but Ovechkin was quick to point out that his moment was different — “I’m pretty sure there was not lots of people around them,” he said.

They had been waiting for that iconic shot as long as he had.

“I don’t know if it was me or Stanley Cup,” Ovechkin said. “But both of us give all attention to this situation. It’s special moment. It’s nice to see when the people understand what you want to do. They take a step back, and we take what I think was a good picture. My friends were at the bar, and they sent it to me, the picture of how I walk and how many people were behind me.

“It was incredible.”

As usual Arizona acts as a contract gutter attracted to guys who will never play again. They also trade up and get some cheap players here, basically cost them Kruger and some fringe prospects. Mostly this deal just highlights that, as always, the Hawks are in salary cap trouble and the Coyotes need to hit the salary floor firmly.

Hellebuyck at $6M per is a steal if he plays like he did last year. Pretty much in step with these sort of first "big contracts" for a No. 1 goalie now. Crazy that this guy was toiling in obscurity and had almost no billing coming into pro hockey.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Emery was one of those guys whose talents were vast by often eclipsed by his troubles, then of course he had the bad hip condition to exacerbate things. He was only 35.

Now comes the fun time when the team says "We wanna keep you, but here are all the reasons you suck and some kinda shitty players we would compare you to." I think he will get a decent award maybe $5.5M or $5.75M. Dumba, William Karlsson, Zucker, Stone, Montour and others may also be headed toward hearings. Karlsson is obviously the most interesting one on the list. I have some places suggesting that the Knights might propose some sort of "show me" deal for a one year but I think it would be in their interest to lock him up now. The award may be pretty high and that would set the bar high for next year. I do think he will regress a little in terms of scoring but even if he is a 30/30 guy with excellent defense, he'll be worth good money. Basing the award on his breakout season last year rather than a level-headed extrapolation of the next few seasons seems risky.

Erik Karlsson remains a Senator and if not for the dumpster fire going on up there I am sure that would be fine with him. I don't think the deal was anywhere near getting done at the deadline despite reports and vague but "firm" notions that the deal was going to be done by the end of a couple weekends ago. Part of it is that the teams with the most assets like Tampa and Dallas might have trouble re-signing him at roughly 10M AAV. Vegas could do it but they seem leery of the type of huge deals that have handcuffed teams like Chicago and Anaheim. I also feel like the Sens haven't defined their goals in the deal, they keep exploring in a million different directions. Pacioretty and Skinner remain on the trade market and it's not a coincidence. I feel like teams are waiting out the situation to see which guys moves first and then maybe try to swoop in on the second guy once the market is set and another suitor drops off. That seems kind of simplistic, they are both wingers (Skinner has also played some center) but are pretty different players. Still the market seems pretty tepid for both, which is unusual given that their salaries are not astronomical

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
