"Ok Sports GD Post September: Sports are starting again edition"
Been a good month for the most part. Passed my national mortgage broker's exam yesterday with a 93%. Proceeded to go have a few drinks of celebration before i headed to the airport. Left my phone in Virginia and flew to SF. Not really a big deal i am out here solo so it just feels like less of a distraction.
Arrived at the hotel last night to see a home made back to the future Delorean being valeted outside the hotel. Spent last night drinking and bullshitting with a New Zealander and an Australian who had just seen their first baseball game at Giants stadium. I explained football and baseball to them and they explained rugby and cricket to me. All in all this is looking to be a great month.
So what's good with you OK sports? Excited about pumpkin beers and other October things? Any new Albums out? Anyone tried this fanduel thing? i was thinking about making a small deposit.

Make sure you go to Franklin BBQ. Get there early (930-10am), have fun, wait in line, have a beer, make friends...and enjoy the hell out of that brisket. Get a pound - 3/4 fatty, 1/4 lean, and get a sandwich too if you want, but get that shit - DO NOT make it the first BBQ you try in the city though because it'll ruin you for life.
Best fried chicken in the city is at Max's Wine Dive. Many will tell you Lucy's, which is good, but Max's is the spot.
Hit up the Rainey St. bars for some unique experiences.
I also highly recommend canoeing on the lake down there.

tell them you're from out of town, sometimes they give a taste of the other meats so you can try it. but the brisket, as with everywhere, is king. it really does ruin any other brisket, even in austin. so fucking good.

la Barbecue is run by a guy who worked with Aaron Franklin since his trailer days and Mueller is Franklin's old boss. also heard good things about Micklethwait.
Franklin's brisket is amazing and the sausages are very, very great...but he only does beef ribs one day a week (perfect beef rib > perfect brisket) and you can get better pork ribs elswhere. curious to see if you ate any other barbecue in Austin.

Awesome summer. I definitely gained like 7-8 pounds because of it, but that's also due in part to not working out like...at all.

She was lucky enough to have gotten out with her sister, but her parents basically sacrificed themselves to make that happen. I quit pushing myself before they got too bad (I think the crew at KosherSam's thing saw them around the worst of it, so it wasn't full-blown crippling), but figuring out exactly how to get back into the swing of things is tricky as shit.
I tried easing back into my usual basketball routine (I had been playing three times a week-- pushed it to four times a week around the time the pain started, not a coincidence I'm sure) by just playing once last week and doing simple shootaround exercise stuff two other days, with plenty of rest. I'd taken roughly two and a half weeks off, and the light exercises/shootaround stuff hadn't aggravated anything. After I played my one time last week though, I still didn't feel 100% and felt some pain come back. Pushing will just make it worse, but unless I try it out some, I have no clue when I'll be 100%.
I know some of y'all have dealt with this before. Advice? I got new in-soles, plenty of ice packs, etc.

That's the way to get rid of them if the issue isn't already too serious and/or keep them away. While you're sitting around watching TV at night, pick up a handful of pencils (or marbles if you're feeling whimsical and own some marbles), drop them on the floor, and pick them up with your toes. You'll suck at it because you're a person and not an animal which regularly handles objects with your toes, but being good at it is't the point.
Do it every night, same as brushing your teeth and ... whatever the hell else you do as a nightly habit.

This summer I got certifications to teach ESL (English as a Second Language). I'm finishing up the online component now, then the job hunt, through an agency, begins.
I'd love to go to Latin America, where I would be able to perfect my spanish and probably fit in better, but they barely pay you to teach english. I've heard that after teaching there for 12 months I could save up at best around $5,000. Whereas in places like Japan I could save around $30,000. Culturally I'd prefer Latin America, but I just graduated college and could use some money. Tokyo could be pretty cool too.
Anyone ever taught ESL? Or have experience living in Latin America/Japan?
On a very important sidenote, I gotta follow the NBA wherever I go. I'm guessing I'll have to spring for NBA League Pass International. This the year for the Bulls. 82-0 and we'll sweep the Heat.

From what they tell me, it's a fairly easy gig, and all your coteachers are young and fresh from college, so you end up just partying and traveling all the time. Both of them really enjoyed the experience.
One of them did warn that it's fun and so easygoing that before you now it, you've extended your stay twice, turned 30 & are way behind in your career back home, and may have pigeonholed yourself
And if you do end up learning Spanish real well I would hide it from your kids, and maybe bosses too, since they want you speaking stricty English with them

Can't beat Capitol Hill for dive bars. every other storefront is a bar. If you want to experience peak Seattle hipster check out cha cha or unicorn. You can head to a bar called Montana for some goodass ginger beer mixed drinks. Maybe an odd recommendation but Rachel's ginger beer, that shit is really good & you can only get it in Seattle.
And they got a bunch of cocktail type places all over the city too. up there they especially love these speakeasies where there's no sign and you gotta go in an alley and ring a doorbell and shit, lol.
,y favorite music venues were neumos, chop suey, and the crocodile, so check those out
People love the underground tour but I've never done it

One day we drove it to a little sports bar to watch Ohio St. We dropped it off at the valet and were walking inside. I turned back around for some reason and saw the funniest thing ever.
Some guy who was behind us stepped to the valet guy before he could park the Delorean. He paid the valet (I don't know how much) to let him sit in the car so his girlfriend could take a picture.
I laughed for 20 minutes. My man was gonna get mad but then all he could do was shake his head & KIM at that point. He did slightly grill the valet dude when we left though.

I've decided to enter the world of basketball referee. taking a 9 week class to get certified for high school ball. Need to get an 86% on the test to pass. 50 T or F questions in 50 minutes. Then I'd have to pass the floor part.

I'm sure if you'll enjoy it more it won't be, but I took a class in college for a credit and aside from the test we also had to ref 30 intramural games.
My first night I went to ref games, the other 2 refs didn't show and I had to do the games by myself which as an overweight unsure of himself college freshmen was terrible.
The first game the Pitt football team had a squad featuring Antonio Bryant and Rod Rutherford, they rolled all over some team of 5 small white kid and I tossed Rutherford out of the game for dunking twice (it was a technical each time)
The 2nd game, a fight broke out due to bad reffing with the teams getting too physical and deciding to police themselves, when the fight ended they all realized I was the common enemy.
I never went back and got an F in the course. To this day I can say I failed basketball officiating.

I'm at the point where I'm actually making more $$$ from music than I am from my day gig (networking/software support for accounting and law firms.) I play for a couple agencies which book musicians for corporate events and country club weddings, and I also have a regular gig at a large church (the biggest church in Michigan.) I'm at the point where I'm having to turn down gigs because of my full time work schedule.
But leaving the day gig also means I'd loose my benefits. I could go on my wife's health care plan, but don't want to if I can avoid it. (That would be a good amount coming out of her check covering for her, my son, and I, and if we have another kid that too.) So I'd like to pay for my own health care. I could definitely make more $$$ from music and have more fun doing it. But I'd also need to put in more work being organized in terms of managing expenses, keeping receipts, etc because it really is running a small business.
It would be great if I could keep doing both, but I'm not at home much right now to help with the kid because of working two full time jobs. Sleep would also be a good thing.

I know I'd make more money now, and definitely for the next few years. But if there was another economic downturn then high paying country club gigs would dry up really quickly. If that happened in the next few years I know I could return to my job if needed. But if that happened maybe 5-10 years from now it would be much more difficult to reenter the job market as any experience I have now would be completely outdated. I guess that's a stupid thing to argue against me going forward because I could keep my job and then get laid off at some point if there was an economic downturn. But there's an overall mindset change I need to go through in moving from being an employee to being a small business owner.

by the economic downturn than live music gigs.
If you do software/networking, keep in touch with spots/colleagues & maybe come in to do some projects on a corp-to-corp level here or there to keep your skills up to date.
You can maybe even file taxes for both under the same umbrella & get yourself a health-care package that's not crazy.
But if you got a chance to do something you love for a living that's also gonna make you more money plus free up your time, it's a no-brainer.
You owe it to yourself to do that for at least a year if not two then take stock.
5 years later, if it all goes to hell, you'll still have a wife with income, kids you'll have gotten to spend more time with, maybe some degree of money plus a few cooler stories than installing NetApp or supporting some servers.
You might have to take a hit coming back in the game (even if you keep up with the technology) on the first gig but once you get a year or two back in the game then you're good to go again with the knowledge internally that you gave it a shot when you had the chance.

I've had a few friends that've reached that point where they can quit their regular day jobs and just get to do the music thing and it's definitely a huge step. Plus it sounds like you can do this without spending too much time away from home which sounds fantastic. Since you currently work in IT, have you considered doing it on occasion as a consulting gig? You'd lose the benefits and it doesn't really sound like you need the cash, but it'd help keep you current if you ever need to leap back fully into it and it could probably keep you going in any slow times with the corporate/country club gigs.
But congrats man on the success, I hope I could hit that level one day.

I've got friends that are on the road touring for artists and it's rough...completely away from family, plus the $$$ isn't consistent because when they are off tour it's tough to get local work since they haven't been building those relationships. The divorce rate among touring musicians is crazy too...it's basically a military spouse type situation.
Staying local isn't as glamorous but the $$$ is more consistent and while I'm working most evenings/weekends I'd still be able to do stuff with my son at school and help out around the house through the week.
I doubt I could do consulting in IT. My degree was in music, and all my experience has come from being with one company for eight years and is pretty specialized. I could get a job from another company but I don't know enough general info to consult.

I knew it would happen at some point. I partially tore my MCL in the first game of my senior season and missed several games. Needless to say, I left a lot of yards on the table. Also, I only got a limited number of carries my sophomore year as I had to play behind a great senior rb. 13 years was a good run though.

We had to do that in Nashville, where lived in a 120 year old building and rather incredibly paid more for heat in the winter than we did in Chicago. Good windows make a huge difference.

No one (including him) saw this coming. Dude wasn't happy and was looking for other jobs, but didn't plan on exiting for at least a little while. Apparently, he got it, his boss called him into his office and he got let go. Don't know what it ultimately ended up being about, but I know he was pretty thoroughly in over his head as soon as they gave him responsibility for one of the "problem" groups in the company.
So yeah, I'm kinda reeling right now. Dude is the one who first gave me an opportunity at this company almost five and a half years ago, so I'm grateful for that. He also looked out for me and the rest of the team over the years, so that was good too. I was kinda annoyed with him right before this happened, because he basically gave me shit on Friday for not filling out the TPS Reports correctly (especially after I'd been busting my ass and taking names on a few other projects), but he certainly didn't deserve this.
And, on a sorta selfish note, I have no idea what this means for me and the rest of the team's future with the company. I worry that it's very likely that someone is going to take over who doesn't understand what we do, and we're gonna be fucked as a result.
So yeah, still trying to keep it all straight in my head right now.
