This one still gets me all fired up. In Arizona, there is a foundation called Johnson-O'Malley. It's a group dedicated to bettering the lives of native people and recognizing our achievements. JOM would get the word out about their awards banquets, parenting classes, meetings, etc. by giving newsletters to schools. The schools would send the info home with the native students. Got it? I was in fifth grade when my teacher called the 3 native students up to her desk to pick up the JOM papers. As we walked up, she started singing, "one little, two little, three little Indians." She said "how" to us and made some joke about why we didn't just use smoke signals. I told my dad at dinner that night, and after he got done choking on his spaghetti, he made some calls, and about a month later, DIANE SHOUSE was fired. All the fifth grade students agreed that was the "freshest" thing all year, but the man wouldn't let us say so in the yearbook.
