they started playing Public Service Announcement... but long and drawn out to build the suspense of "oh shit!! is jay z about to come out?? is he REALLY here??"

i dont see how you could think Kanye was coming by them playing a Jay Z song.

it started with black thought singing the ray chalres song, then the roots started playing gold digger, i was actually texting my boy that kanye was comin on, and then they switched it to PSA. and act like jigga throwin the hood off wasn't the sweetest thing ever.

yeah i know they go through the old joints but they played the ray charles joint, then thought started singin' the sample and people were looking around like hhhmmmmm, then they went into the others like SIKE, doin biggie, pac etc. then that baseline dropped for public service announncement. you had a feeling 'cause it seemed like a weird time in the show to start that "hip hop 101" thing.

SO amazing..... and no one has mentioned yet that Bilal rocked with them too. KILLED it!!!!

The feel in the house when Jay came out was ELECTRIC!!!!!!!

Badu and You Got Me was a highlight with Kirk's solo in the middle

Mos singing "Boogie Man" was hot

Angelique really worked it out

And Jazzy Jeff... well what can you say.. it's Jeff

Congratulations guys.... that show was officially murdered.

tonight was GREAT... i went to both shows, and 5/19 definitely made up for 5/18... the intro with the marching in was so dope... they were marching 2 inches away from me... (my pictures didn't come out too well so if anyone has pictures and/or videos.. PLEASE contact me... i could really use those)

this was the best show i've ever seen in my life... Dave Chappelle's stand up was HILARIOUS... the surprises were GREAT!... and honestly my favorite part was the marching in and marching out because i was so close to so many people i look up to...?uestlove, Dave Chappelle, Mos Def, Black Thought, Erykah Badu... that was RIDICULOUS.. please if you can.. PICTURES AND VIDEO of it.. MOS DEF DID UNIVERSAL MAGNETIC... i flipped out.. i've never seen him perform that, and it's one of my favorites... the set was much better in my opinion too!

HOVA HOVA HOVA!! i still can't believe Hov came out...

In response to Reply # 47

Bilal was wonderful! I noticed that few people were standing when he was on stage. I was surprised considering the type of show it was that most would know who he was. *shrugs* I enjoyed him.

Me and my guy drove from Atlanta to be at this show. We bought tickets last minute from a broker and hopped in a car 10 pm on the 18th to arrive 12pm on the 19th. People said we were crazy, they said, "Why would you drive 14 hours?" My response, it was my 31st birthday on the 18th and why the hell not.

If I could make a career of just traveling to different 'once in a lifetime' shows I would. I guess I could make a career of it. lol It was wonderful.
- It was worth the crook in the neck I got while I slept in the car.
- It was worth the blood shot eyes yesterday morning. (My coworker told me I looked like my boyfriend beat me up)
- It was worth almost being scammed by the stubhub people, because we got closer seats. Row ZZ baby! All the artists walked right past us when they were leaving the stage.

Once in a Lifetime experiences is what it's all about. This was the best birthday ever!

Peace

Registered just to post about this concert. I had 5th row seats to the concert on the 18th but sold them, when I heard the bad reviews of the first one i was like damn they gonna have to od for the second one. So i get the tickets no lie about 7 o clock cause i called the guy and he had to make ticketmaster have the tickets for me at the door.

SO as I get in security is blocking people from getting to thier seats, i was like wtf, so then i see them walking through the crowd right in front of me, good way to start. Mos def killed it, he ran up the aisle right past me. Dave chappelle came on talking about the game and iceberg slim, I recoreded the whole thing. Bilal came but wasted too much time and didnt even sing fast lane and walked off strangely. Slum village did rize up, selfish but damn no tainted. Then badu came out and killed it, didn't sing all her hits but did her thing.

The they was like the show is over, and i knew it wasnt cause i checked the time, so they keep playing for a while and then Jay-z comes the place goes crazy, I seen him do this before at the Kanye concert. And when the show is over they all walk apast me except jay-z and i got it on video.

One of the best concert i been too but not the best, at the r kelly concert in radio city last moneth i got to go no stage!!!1

I got video and pics so holla!!!!!!!!!!!!

i will post the entire complete setlist tomorrow night.

jay z, dave chappelle, slum village, mos def, jazzy jeff, rahzel, horns, erykah badu, bilal, j davey, angelique kidjo, skillz, truck north, the list goes on.

RCMH absolutely erupted when Hova came out... it was unreal.

also, the roots came out just like Kimmel center. entered from back of the arena playing Duck Down with the brass band and BlackThought rappin through the megaphone. ILL.

We will upload some exclusive video clips later this weekend, courtesy of therootslive.com, and much much more goodies to come in the future from this memorable event.

i cant sum up the whole show, shit was amazing

personally, i liked thursdays guests more (nas, common, kweli) more than fridays (mos, eryka, etc...) but fridays show was definitely done better and more professionally

i knew hov was gonna show, and i was gettn nervous at like 10:45 but i knew theyd save him for the last minute of the last night

chappelle's shit got me laughing so hard tho, great intermission from the music

shit was so fucking funny when dave came out tho, he said something like :

"shit...you know its special when i show up. i dont even show up for my own (TV) show"

The Roots were on point but thats a given. There was a sexy ass chick with a feathered hat that was cool. Jay-Z tore the place down though. These two night will most definitely go down in hip hop history. Mos,Kweli,Common Sense,Roots,Dave Chapelle,Big Daddy Kane,Bilal,ErykahBadu,Mad Skillz,Nas and Jay-Z.

the way they broke down the two nights was perfect imo.

while night 2 was a bit more soul/rnb than night 1, it was still a perfect mix.

someone needs to make this happen.

Was there sign of videotaping?

Looking forward to seeing the setlist. Did Badu sing anything other than You Got Me? Any differences between the Roots sets last night and the night before?

the roots setlist was different both nights. they knew people bought tix to both nights and wanted to make sure they saw 2 different shows. badu did 3 of her own songs, and a new rendition of you got me with beautiful work on the keys by Kamal and I believe James Poyser.

with Skillz and Truck North both making their guest spots.

this song was actually the only flaw of the night.

it sounded excellent, but at one point Kamal came in too early with his keys and kirk started doing the "clap your hands" riff a bit premature.

but that is VERY nitpicky, it came off great and every song was done to near perfection!

wow i am still stunned...

some highlights chronologically...

angelique kidjo, first time seeing her...

thought and mos doing 'double trouble...

mos and the roots ripping up 'ms. fat booty'...

mos running down the aisles of radio city at the end of 'umi says'...

slum village paying tribute to dilla in 3 songs...

mos singing the hook to 'selfish'...

jazzy jeff killing his run-dmc 'peter piper' routine he did at the bet awards a couple years ago...

dave chappelle riffing on 'the game' for 15 mins...

bilal singing 'everything in its right place'...something about bilal covering radiohead is just perfect...

bilal killing 'sometimes'...

erykah rolling thru three baduizm tracks (otherside, on & on, lifetime) then ushering in 'you got me'...

jay-z coming out in a gray hoodie, hood up, taking it off, and bringing the house down with 'psa'...

unbelievable show...worth every single penny...

i originally bought tickets for Fridays show 'cause i've seen Common a lot recently. then i see NAS on the bill and couldn't miss it. but for some reason i felt something special would happen the second night, like with less expectations. both shows were DOPE. I enjoyed the second night more (even before HOV took stage) there was something more casual about it the way Mos and Erykah rocked, thursday had this like Wrestelmania shit to it that it couldnt live up to. dope nonetheless, but the ROOTS set was cooler thursday opening with DUCK DOWN in the audience with Black Thought rhyming through a megaphone, STEP INTO THE REALM, WHAT THEY DO, MELLOWMYMAN.

I was a little tight in the beggining because BT did the megaphone bit back at the Kimmel Center with the band from New Orleans. Turns out they flipped it, and it all went uphill from there. Between Dave actually SPEAKING on Friday (he had us gassed on Thursday) and Hov taking of the hoodie, shit was definitely one of the best I've ever seen.

She is on Y. N'dour's, Cassandra Wilson's, etc albums.
Also her own Solo albums most recent one making any noise in the states to my knowledge was Black Ivory Soul (very old now)
ANytime you need to bring THE HOT FIRE w' some W. African Sexy vocals ... Call Madam Kidjo

I just want to thank all the artists involved in this weekends shows. Friday night was a great ending to 2 nights of good music. The Roots are the Roots. You know you will be getting your money's worth and then some when you get your tickets to see them perform. With or without guests you are getting a hell of a show when you go see the Roots.

Thursday night was good but it had its problems with special guests not showing up and mic problems. I was also disappointed that more of the people in the orchestra sections were not in their seat when the show started. I was in the first mezz and it looked like the orchestra section was less than half full at the start of the show. It was my first time seeing Common and he was pretty damn good. Nas was great as well. I was also excited to see the legendary Big Daddy Kane and Jazzy Jeff.

Friday night was one of the best Roots concerts I have been to. I have been to about 10 Roots shows (these were the only Roots shows I have attended not in the 930 Club) and of course all the Roots shows are at the top of my list but this one as well as the first OKP Tour stand out as being great shows. It was my first time seeing Badu and Mos and they were very very good. SV did a great job. Chappelle was very funny. I liked Bilal's performance as well since he did my favorite song of his "Sometimes." Hova was icing on the cake. It was already going to be a classic show and his appearance pushed it over the top. The entrance of the Roots and the exit of all the performers through the isles was also a nice touch. I was hoping that since there was a horn section the Roots would play "Silent Treatment" which is one of my favorite songs.

Thanks to ?uest and everyone else that played a hand in coordinating these shows. I am sure it was a difficult process but in the end it was worth it. I made the not so long trip from DC on the train but i can tell you it was more than worth it.

Rich

...especially at the beginning and end of the show. The entrance/exit (both came right by me. I sat in the last row of the orchestra... I couldn't believe it when I turned around to see who was playing the drums behind me at the beginning of the show to see Quest, followed by Thought with his megaphone). I couldn't clearly hear all of what Thought was saying when they entered, but he was a slightly different version of "Duck Down" by the time they reached the stage.
-angleique was great.. I also liked how they went into "Water No Get Enemy" (I think that was it) when her set ended.
-Seeing "Double Trouble" performed live with Mos and BT was a dream come true, as was an amazing "Umi Says"
-Mos kept talking about how people sing the chorus to "Ms. Fat Booty" without knowing the words
-Jazzy Jeff tore it up
-it seemed that a lot of people weren't really sure what to make of J. Davey. I thought they were dope, especially their second song (I'm not really familiar with their stuff, but they brought a lot of energy)\
-Chappelle telling the crowd that he dodged Oprah's questions Matrix-style was great. His thoughts on "The Game" and his bit about Iceberg Slim was some pretty serious ish. I've seen Chappelle live before and he was on some serious/intense (albeit still funny) ish.
-it was good to see Bilal. I noticed, too (someone mentioned it in an earlier post) that he walked very solemnly off the stage. The man can sing.
-Erykah brought great presence. She took her time but did so with purpose. She even gave a shout to Okayplayer ("Can I get an Ookkaaypplaaaaaayyeerrr???") that many in the crowd seemed to appreciate.
-"You Got Me" was AMAZING... definitely a highlight. It was the most powerful performance of that song that I've heard The Legendary do. Kirk, E, Kamal, and BT were great.
-I had a great look of the entire orchestra going BANANAS when "PSA" came on.
-the exit was dope. Every person I saw on the way out had a smile and visible sense of elation/disbelief at what they just saw.

Thanks to the Roots and all the other performers for a great show.

In response to Reply # 0

I had heard the sounds .... Griping from my peoples who went Thurs. But I was undeterred ... I had already drove down from Rhode Island and took a day off work just to be there. I do not know exactly what happened Thurs (other than hearsay)but my peoples were none too happy ... in fact one had tickets to both shows and decided not to go the second night just out of principal.
Sucky for Him....
So where to begin .... Bilal showed up. First he went into everywhere and was the background vocal lead in for ?uest's Drum Solo. He did sing my Song - Sometimes sooo there was much rejoicing. (Hehe) Seriously though this show was Hot .... not the best Roots show ever (I personally experienced the Roots in a smaller venue for the first time back in 94' and I am prone to wax Nostalgia) But Hot.

Everyone knows Mos was coming, Erykah, and J Davey were in, and by that evening I had heard that Jazzy was a lock, but Dave Chappelle doing a good 20 minute set for intermission.... then Bilal singing Sometimes ..... Not to mention Jay Z. Mos rocking w' Slum Village and reppin' J. Dilla was nice. (Although Slum Village Set should have been just one song...the first one raise it up and that's it.... Therefore allowing Angelique more time or even something a little different from J Davey)

When Jay walked on stage this asian chick started grabbing people randomly and screaming @ them. Tariq is a Beast and flexxed Stay Cool. Angelique Kidjo is my aunties and grandmothers' favorite so to see her rockin w' the Roots is phenom. (One Song though... come on!). Jazzy Jeff was tight (albeit brief) but I expect nothing less from a master. J Davey is on some real ROCKSTAR SHIT.

The only thing I can think of that would have shocked me any harder than some of the great surprises last night would be if Austin Powers (AKA Mike Myers as...) came out and flowed into BBC or Daddy Wasn't there then @ the End of the show when Jay Z came out have them go into Hard Knock life ...Dr. Evil verses Hov!

NY wasn't ready for J'davey, they had the stage jumpin the whole time they was up there and people were lunchin'.

Props to The Roots w/ the marching band, Great Beginning. I saw it at the kimmel center too, but you can't get enough. Slum Village was a surprise. I got really hype when they did 'raise it up', the beat started and here they come running out the stage. Im not gonna lie either, i started looking for Jay Dee when it came on. I love his verse on that song, they all did it and it had that effect like wow.

Angelique Kidjo definitely had me dancing to the drums, she was strong with hers. You couldn't just sit there (you had to dance, sing along or something), at least i couldnt just sit there.

The Roots of course did there thing, the next movement, love of my life, the mic, you got me (i likes this version), hip hop 101, Double Fucking Trouble with Mos Def.

Mos Def, man what can i tell you about dude. He seemed overwhelmed, when he saw the crowd but he did his thing. Double Trouble, Umi Says, The Intro on the New Danger Album, Universal Magnetic, Ms Fat Booty. It was a pleasure to see dude rocking the house.

Slum Village also did Selfish, w Mos Def contributing to the hook. And Fall In Love, might i add was So lovely to hear live

Dave Chapelle describing how he dodged Oprah's questions like the Matrix had me dying and of course his reasons of why he left the show and why how he wants us all to "Never Leave Him" was also hilarious. You know what he came at a perfect time because I haven't sat down yet since The Roots started marching down the aisle

Another surprise, Bilal, He always does his thing and he was a great addition to the show. Sometimes and the Radiohead cover, btw He blew that shit away, all good.

Erykah, Erykah, what can i tell you. Sexy as usual. Block on lock, the glock's on cock and you KNOW that you got me, what a combination.

J'Davey, shorty in them little ass shorts, *Two Thumbs Up*. I saw her walking up the aisle with another okp (FE), I was ready to snatch her ass up. but naw, I like her performance, well their performance, i keep forgeting about dude on the keyboard. If i wasn't so tired already (mind you the show just started not too long ago), I would have been jumping the whole time she was on. She is... whats the word... Lively. Why didn't they do "NO MORE", i was kinda sad about that but i couldn't complain.

My name is Hov, H to Oh Vee, Yes I surprised to see Mr presidente in the show but like fwmj said, I was quite upset that the crowd didn't go as apenuts for everybody else. but i could understand, because nobody expected him to come out. I thought kamal was just doing his solo thing, he started playing 'PSA' and im like 'yeah kamal, whatever nigga, yeah i know you can play, so what' then BT comes out on some 'ole i would like to introduce to you our next guest' with the song is still on, when i saw dude in the hoodie, it was a wrap, I knew who it was but i couldn't believe til he said those first lines. Damn.

Dj Jazzy "there it is!!(C) Run-DMC" Jeff, brought me back when he did his solo. I was drunk too, (I had one big cup of thug passion the whole night), and when that beat came on, I was loose. Them speakers had me in a trance.

Also ?uest drums was feeling extra Boomish, too. Looks like he was having fun, especially when J'Davey was on, It looked as if he was beating his drums with his head.

The Misc: Hub's solo, The horns on the side, Knuckles, Cpt. Kirk showing what he does best.

Awesome Show. ####

As an attendee to the 5/18 Thursday show, I have to say.....I FEEL CHEATED!!!!

Yeah i know, Kane, Nas, Kweli, Comm were there, but what everyone is describing about Friday is what I expected Thursday... I was set up by all this "unnanounced guest" talk that it was a real let down when there were none...

Don't get me wrong, I love the Roots, but I left thursday's show , not only at 10:30pm, but a little torn, on the one end, I enjoyed every minute of the Roots, Kane, Comm, Kweli, Nas doing their thing, but on the other end the show felt very incomplete (for reasons already stated)

and then my biggest fear came true, NIGHT 2 BLEW NIGHT ONE BLEW NIGHT 1 OUT OF THE WATER!

and then to top it off i read the "original plan" set list and it just killed me, i rather not even know that such a great plan fell so short...

As an attendee of night 2’s show, I see now why ?uest was a little let down by the original plan for night 1 falling through. I mean I know night 1 was probably a tight show nonetheless but had the initial plan been executed it would have been monumental.

for a concert that should've been worth every mile of our drive.. 12 hours in a packed car, having to stay in a shitty motel with piss water in the pool.. and I can't say that it came even close to being worth it. We went on Thursday and were only contemplating what 'special guests' were going to performing.. and not just because we were hoping for it.. but we were EXPECTING it.. especially after all that was said by ?uest.. how it wasn't about the people mentioned on the tickets, but the people that WEREN'T. And.. unfortunately.. Rahzel was the only thing I liked about the Thursday show. I had never seen Nas perform and was greatly anticipating him.. but when he left the stage, I was like "THAT'S IT?!!" Sure, timing and such should imply that no one will be there long.. but I felt like Common did a better and longer set. And I'm a big Common fan, so that was great but still.. I've seen Common many times in CHICAGO, where he def. brings it.. I couldn't stop screaming when he'd mention the City of Wind.. but this was NYC, this was Nas.. and I felt unsatisfied. At the end of the night, when we saw Badu and Dave showed face to say bye.. I was like "thanks for nothing, I'd rather not know that they were there late.. I'd rather lie to myself and believe they were not planning on coming at all." In the end, if it weren't for Rahzel.. I would've said a lot of apologizes to my friends on the drive back.. it just wasn't the concert we anticipated to see.. for that, we would've stayed home. We've already seen The Roots with Kane and with Common here in Chicago..

They've done the type of entrance/exit described for years. I'm not trying to compare them to the Roots but I've seen this concept executed much better.

Anyhow, sounds like it was a great show. Checked out the youtube that was posted in anohter post. Wish i was there to experience it.

The crew needs to do this in LA!

and now that i think of the schematics and seating or RCMH, it would be impossible. you really have to see how intimate ozo is with their fans.

in a nutshell, usually they'll do a whole conga line throughout the venue, everyone follows (horns and percussion mainly). then they make their way towards the middle of the venue in a circle and just start playing music...very respond/react with the audience. i highly recommend you pick up their live dvds. i tried a youtube search but couldn't find any good ones.

Okay I have like THE biggest bone to pick with Mr. Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson aka The Musical Director at the Helm!!!! I went to the Thursday show, had a blast, Big Daddy Kane nearly made me die as i nearly lept over the banister on the upper level......Common as well.....when he did "Testify"...I once again almost lept out the damn balcony.......
