"OKP's don't understand the concept of dialogue."

There's no space allocated for the flow & growth of a conversation. There's only...get it "right" in the first reply or else....That's not dialogue. That's not how this thing is supposed to work. It doesn't work, hence the diminishing member numbers and quality of posts.

I try.
Y'all should too.

every single topic that's posted with some degree of sincerity behind it that ultimately turns into a shit show because people don't know how to carry on a dialogue. A lot of your posts (despite how they're plated) have a ton of merit and potential...but spiral out of control....

Where it falters is when there is no space allocated for a statement that you might not agree with to be accepted as a valid point.
Who defines "stupid"? If you believe that any point that you don't agree with is "stupid", then you just might be part of the problem.

If I make a post insulting you, should I expect reasonable nuanced arguments ?
Honestly most of the extreme responses are to inflammatory positions or inflammatory posters.
Lot's of great discussions were and still happen here , I've disagreed with a lot of people and even changed my mind occasionally.

Not sure how to answer this one. If an insulting post is made off jump?...hells no...just K.I.M. is my general move. I might reply to constructive dialogue later on down the thread....

They do. But in many occasions it just ends up being a matter of the dominant thought drowning out all else.

She said something really dumb. Worthy of getting checked. But the overall tone of her email was conciliatory. Wonder if it was worth her getting ousted for.

there are plenty of sites where you can get intellectually honest dialogue from ppl with opposing views
here's a thread about basic income (finland is implementing it in '16)
with intelligent well thought out arguments from ppl on both sides
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10553008
very little snark and almost no personal insults or ad hominen attacks
that was the first thing on the internet that i read this morning
went from that to sowhat calling ppl assclowns so i def feel you
but you should already know what it is by now, and bounce if it bothers you that much

come here because it's mostly "us" and because sometimes the snark and condescension is funny/amusing
that about it

most of the plat threads here are mostly from a handful of posters going back and forth over minutiae
positioning the person they are debating with for a gotcha trap
doing that in OKS is one thing
but at this stage i don't really see the value in doing that over real issues

nor was i trying to "trap" anybody.
i will cop to doing that on occassion.

i am asking a Black message board
about the FEELINGS they have towards cops.

that is all.
there is no right or wrong answer for that.

i want everybody's answer, even those ppl that i have called
conservative.

i want to know what emotions other Black ppl here feel towards cops.

personally, i feel rage, resentment, and a desire to fight back
against cops that fuck with Black ppl for little to no reason.
i don't think they should have the right to use violence against
me just because i disobey their orders. especially for some
minor ass shit that i know they don't bother white folks for.

of course, i don't walk around expressing these feelings towards cops... because, who is trying to get shot or whatever.

but the emotion is there.

that is the dialouge i was looking for.
i didn't snark nobody in that post.

because as i see it, those in power stay in power
by making everything a "debate."

"yeah, it was wrong for the cops to shoot that Black person,
but lets look at both sides. this kid had an unprofessional facebook profile. or he might have stolen some cigars. or he shouldn't have been selling loose cigarettes. or whatever."

the fact that "we" (rubs skin) are debating about
Black on Black crime and kids sagging their pants in a conversation
that started about a cop shooting an unarmed Black person
is a travesty.

because it's a way to get us to avoid talking about
the fact that Black ppl, for all intents and purposes,
live under a police state, and the penalty for non-compliance
could be extreme violence at the hands of law enforcement.

anything that shifts the conversation AWAY from that is a dangerous dialouge.

so yeah, i'll ridicule and use ad hominems and condescend in those posts. because that is the tactic that "they" use against us
whenever we bring up a legit grievance.

they trivialize it, deny it, attack the tactics we use to make our point... do ANYTHING to avoid talking about the fact that
a cop killed an unarmed Black person. Again.

the "dialouge" seems like a diversionary tactic,
and it's dangerous because it leads to many ppl feeling
that maybe Black kids just deserve the treatment they get from cops because they are just bad.

inferior.

no.

i don't think that's a dialouge we need to have or even entertain.

that's why i post that way.
i doubt i'll stop.

Yes some people are assholes and not worth typing to but a lot of good points get lost in the sarcasm and snark.
The people who type ridiculous responses are not the only people reading a post.
My point is, it's not just dismissive to the person its directed to but other readers as well.

even the serious will clown at times. It could depend on the topic or what that person is feeling that day.

so to a reader when someone you(sowhat) considers a clown makes an interesting point, and you dismiss it with snark bc of who the poster is, it makes you look like the crazy one that can't have a conversation or the one who doesn't have a point so they are just gonna derail. And whatever your underlying point under the snark was gets lost.

00's and we haven't figured out how to turn back.

Where snark is heavy it's impossible to have real dialogue.

Half the people snarking in plat posts are really intelligent and could have great dialogue if they decided to. But folks don't look at OKP as a place to do that, anymore.

In response to Reply # 43

i can't disagree, really.
i will cop to getting frustrated pretty easily these days,
mostly because i come to okp because there is stuff
that we really should be talking about...

and so many of the replies sound like the stuff
i came to okp to avoid.

kinda like a safe space from the common narrative associated to
most things.

i am pretty level headed in real life,
and i make my points in conversation.

but when folks start snarking me HERE for points that i
don't feel like i should have to dance around, it gets beyond old.

like... everything ain't a joke.

i love okp when it's all jokes.
but a post about Black ppl getting murdered ain't the time
for devil's advocate just for shits and giggles.

it feels like some posters are trivializing important shit
just for the fuck of it.

it's an ugly thing to do.

i'm glad to see some old faces around nowadays.
it makes it easier to ignore bullshit.

On one hand, I enjoy alot of the class clowns here. But then, when I want to really talk about stuff, I want all that to stop so we can really talk.

I hate that it seems we can't do both, anymore.

...as someone who is pretty much objectively outside all the hoopla
peering in, I can attest to every one of us being accountable for the
direction this board has taken. Scapegoating one poster isn't accurate
and more importantly, say he stopped posting - would the issues being
raised in this post be addressed? Nope.

Real talk: if dialogue is what we're after let's have at it and make
the effort by chilling with the blaming, justifications, and excuses.

...when folks talk outside their necks and say some borderline
personal shit that has no merit on the convo (like reducing someone's
entire position to being a byproduct of their sexuality OR arriving at a conclusion
about someone's world view based solely off their appearance)
Nuckleheads shouldn't act brand new when they get clapped at.

Reactionary responses to foolishness on here is arguably a futile endeavor
and possibly foolish too but at least it's not as lame as instigating shit.

further
this isnt about someone getting personal
and getting clapped back

this (as the OP suggests)
is about natural, OPEN dialogue between adults being snuffed out by the childish antics of those that cannot express their opinions without name calling by taking different opinions personal.

its counter productive to what we all want.

whats more
people dont even understand the difference between a troll, someone playing devils advocate, and a different opinion.

far too often every different opinion gets lumped in with being a troll

if what a troll says upsets you to the point of lashing out
you're just as bad as that troll for feeding into it

maybe they arent trolling
maybe you're just too sensitive

The examples I listed above are just as dismissive as what seasonedvet
seems to be taking issue with you guys. Ya'll ain't taking things
personally by clapping back when your form of clapping back is ridicule,
snark, and trolling. It's giving folks a taste of their own medicine and it's
weird that this isn't blatantly obvious to folks crying for discourse
after talking shit or cosigning those who do.

I could be wrong about it all, but that's how I've seen this here being
played out.

level 1: it's not the same as it was - no shit, Im not who I was in 1999, 2004, or even 2013. the world changes

level 2: people who hate their lives make everyone else suffer along with them via negativity and trolling - that element definitely exists, but it's the internet

level 3: generally miserable people who hate posting here yet they're still posting here - I dont get it myself, maybe it's a habit they cant break

I dont take the internet very serious

It's the internet though, I've grown to expect it at this point.

things up.

it's not a good narrative - because you think people who have fun online, at the expense of others, are sad and lonely, and that's just not the case.

it makes you seem disconnected, or more simply - wrong, when you make observations like that.

your disconnection makes me less likely to validate your position on things.

i'm not sure if that's fair to you, though.

what do you think?

do you care?

and why you always calling me a piece of shit?

power gives you advantages.

It may seem trivial but from a lot of people's perspective the result
of being on the receiving end of that behavior is pretty impactful.
Folks seeing the impact they've made on others have to feel some
sense of power in it, no?

Actually, scratch that- don't see the benefit in naming names if folks reading know what's referring to them and what isn't.

Put it this way, folks hollering about capes being worn by people isn't just because they were defending intangible concepts like
gender inequality, a lot of instances were in defense of posters, actual Ok players too. Even tho I didn't necessarily need it, I've
been the beneficiary of that type of kindness in the past on here as well.

Things can and have gotten hella ugly on here when we've allowed it to.

i suppose it is possible for power to be shared, in a near utopia situation, but as far as i can tell, the reason ppl seek power
is because power has tangible benefits,
and you can make life better for you and your ppl
while making somebody else's life worse.

if a group is powerless, they will be exploited by the ppl in power until they build some power.

and if history is any indication, nobody gives up power willingly.

the gay civil rights movement is the only time i can think of
where previously disenfranchised ppl got rights without
some kind of war or bloodshed.

american colonies got free of Great Britian using violence.
slavery was instituted and eradicated using violence.
the police and the CIA used violence against Black ppl during the Civil Rights movement,

and on and on and on.

if you don't see it, i don't know how you don't.

I don't have any issues with you DZ and generally enjoy reading what you have to say,
then again...you say some pretty off the cuff shit to people occasionally that
ain't worth reading imo and if they were directed towards me I probably wouldn't
feel so lackadaisical about.

I agree it's probably wrong to assume you're miserable, in fact you
strike me as downright jolly in your vids. Also, to your credit when
folks call you an asshole your responses oftentimes exhibit both snark
and accountability for what you said initially.

I think when you DON'T do that your posts run into problems.

and thank you for this response. it's very accurate.

i deliberately try to take a bit of accountability for things so im really glad you notice - there are plenty people that think im a horrible human being, and it makes me sad, on a specific level.

sad - because i know there's so much more that they are misinterpreting, on and offline, in their environment. They could enjoy this world so much more, if only they'd get over themselves and realize im actually a friendly ass mutha fucka. and that sometimes, they're wrong about stuff.

don't nobody feel one way all the time. or even most times.

the person feeling it.

we are all suffering, in the Buddhist sense.

Life is insufficent.
Things fade, we grow attached to ppl and things we can't keep.

Suffering is just something humans navigate.

I dunno who is suffering the most.
I can't gauge another's suffering.

But i think that we like to imagine the ppl that hurt us only do it because they suffer more inside.

I can't clap to that rationale anymore.

If somebody is hurting you,
you stop them.

assuming they are suffering
maintains the status quo.

opression should be met with resistance, not existential sympathy

i don't think wild responses will end, but i think everyone once in a while a little "oh yeah i was def in the wrong in that post" works.

then there are those who will just continue to troll. to try to derail. i was a lurker in the pete/bartek/#### days, banning them (continuously) seemed to work ok. they always come back but at least there's relative peace for a while

#### posts were always funny to me cuz it was always on some "I'm great/yall not/get on my level" and the arrogance and delusion was really funny to me.

now its not so funny cuz it seems he had real issues.

my point is, its funny to to sometimes have extreme characters. something about a few of the recent ones aren't as funny tho. they are more antagonistic, offensive, and hurtful, it seems.

... but some people show up to a post to pick fights and talk down to others. I can't wrap my head around the concept of logging on to repeatedly attack, harass, and stalk another poster. Sometimes it comes across like people are trying to win brownie points or kudos. These people, they, are agenda driven useless condescending Troglobites of the world and want attention I guess.

The blatant trolls like the dude talked military tactics in the Aurora post are out of line. As are the people that trolled tragedies.

I don't know if I was the one to come up with that phrase. Its basically any person who has an agenda and no matter what they are sticking to that agenda. This could be on any topic from feminism to police brutality to sexual abuse.

I've seen better back and forth debates on Reddit and 4Chan than here.

The hardliners here have zero interest in dialogue. There is no room for anything other than parroting each other and whatever blog-driven "talking points" they may have along with trying to be more hardline than their peers.

What I find most interesting, however, is some of those very same hardliners today were on the opposite side of some of these issues not too long ago (i.e. street holler/harassment).

Not too long ago "certain posters" didn't think the street holler was a bad thing, even going so far as asking the same questions that those who don't see it as a big deal have asked.

Today those "certain posters" are vehemently against it and you're an asshole for doing it.

problem is a bunch of butthurtedness and people taking things overly personally...

feeling like they know each other and taking every criticism as a personal attack.

sometimes things are, but you don't have this on other forums.

but your getting huffy over some past shit - a person having held a different in the opinion of the past - is an example of this history problem that's specific to okp.

Without going into specifics:

Today you hold position A. You argue for it, see no problem with it, participate in long threads about it and hold fast to that position.

Tomorrow you hold position B. Your arguments are that a family member, close friend, person in your immediate community was affected by it therefore you're against it. But these events preceded your previous position historically, ergo said family member had been affected by it before you made your post supporting position A.

To me it seems that if you hold a position one day and give a reason for it as being a traumatic event that affected either yourself or a loved one, you can't possibly have held the polar opposite position in good conscience.

Give an example:

Today: "I see no problem with wage inequality"
Tomorrow: "Wage inequality is terrible and you're a terrible person for supporting it. My sister has been on the same job for 20 years and watched her salary barely go up while males that are in the same position often start with higher salaries"

So... today you don't see an issue with it even though it currently affects someone you love but tomorrow you argue against it using that same person as an example?

Nah b.

Because I've seen it time and time again where a longstanding poster has been called out when their stance has flip flopped. I'm on enough forums all over the place where this happens repeatedly; OKP is not an anomaly with this.

It occurs amongst any group of people. We need to pick and choose who to have a dialogue with and not take others perspective personal.
