just to follow through on one point, Shooz -- Each person in the congregation has a responsibility to use the sense that God gave them, if any (by which I mean that different people are in different situations and have arrived there with different abilities), to leave that congregation or to otherwise make a statement (which can be made by leaving) when they realize that the pastor has crossed the line from peculiar to dangerous.
Yes, the pastor bears his/her share of responsibility. But to believe that all responsibility for the congregation falls on one person's shoulders is to deny the people of the church their own share of credit or discredit. Remember that the most common response at Nuremburg was "I was just following orders."
