"November futbol: Chelsea’s Silva lining."
Mon Nov-09-20 10:44 AM by allStah

For the past few weeks, things have been stable. The lineups and formations have been consistent, and frank has done away with the stubbornness. We have more of a defensive presence. Ziyech, Kante, Mendy, and Silva have made a tremendous difference ....A group of veterans mixed in with the kids.

Frank was trying to roll with a young diet....naw, fam, gotta have some fiber in the diet.

Hazard came through and showed that he is still true god .....but then my mans caught Covid. And before that, cats were intentionally trying to foul his ankles and feet...La liga scared!

insisting on 3 subs when the rest of the world stuck w/ 5
sticking to 2 cups
still poor at accommodating teams that had to travel mid-week for European matches

plus you still got these international friendlies breaking up the season.

These guys are about to play an inhumane amount of soccer from July 2020 to the World Cup 2022

5 subs may or may not help.

The problem is the FA's greed. Period. Two domestic tournaments is a joke.

(Also I'm just whining about LFC's injury luck this year, which is getting absurd)

and it's not just an EPL thing. Some big games in Italy (eg Lazio-Juve) suffered from the same sluggish play and injuries that everyone was pointing to after the tedious 2d half of City-Liverpool. Play has been bad all over Europe, injuries are piling up, and while it's possible teams will adjust it's hard to get any continuity with the stop-and-go confinements that loom over the next few months

NBA: Spurs / NFL: Jets

you really want grealish to play a full domestic schedule w/ internationals dispersed throughout, plus a euro. plus a world cup.
plus any cup runs you make? and oh lets say you make Europa, get used to Thursday evening/early Sunday kickoffs and grueling travel.

damn near every 3-5 days for the next 20 months?

it's just insane and supremely irresponsible. england is about to burn out a generation by WC2022.

Never wanted him because of that.. Cats were coming at me hard in here, talking about dude was this and that. I’m like this is Chelsea FC, and he is injury prone as fock. People kept saying I was hating and being silly.

For 70 million???

Big buys never work out at this club. That’s what I’ve learned. Whenever we shell out tons of money for a player, they usually go bust.

Schvchenko, Torres, morata, Kepa....Pulisic and Havertz look like they are headed that way. They are both still young as shit. But still.

With Pulisic, it’s his health. With Havertz, he might not be strong enough for the league.

If they pan out, they pan out. If they don’t, they don’t....too much great stuff going on.

Lampard has to be all PC and shit, but Lamps does not wont him there due to that. With Chelsea being sponsored by Nike, and Pulisic being a Nike guy, Chelsea is probably going to ride this out for a long time.

If this were any other player, it wouldn’t be tolerated by the fans or media. RLC and Odoi were studs before their ACL injuries. They just got back and RLC was loaned, and people shit on Odoi every time he plays.

This isn’t an agenda. I’ve seen you diss and talk about your own players like greizeman being trash, etc.

Would you even care if it wasn’t Pulisic? You’re proven my point.
If a player is injury prone, he is injury prone. If a player is terrible, he is terrible.

We don’t up posts in soccer. We have never don’t that here. It would be stupid.

Manchester United posters diss their players more than any other posters in here...every week Brooklynwhat is dissing the shit out of weak, injury prone ass players like pogba , etc.

Pulisic is no different, and isn’t beyond reproach. I don’t like him because he is injury prone and he was purchased for 70 million dollars.

If he can stay on the pitch, and help us win titles, then good. If he can’t, then we need to move on.

I don’t interfere with you and your squad or how you grade and judge your players.
I’m not a Barca fan. And you’re not a Chelsea guy.

So Stop with the silly shit.

not beyond reproach is different from screw that guy (OVER AN INJURY) and saying you never wanted him and he isn't worth 70 mil

I will admit, your (wrong) Havertz take has been consistent.

also, this you?

Just like you can, regardless of what you say and how you say it.

If I say forget Pulisic because he is injury prone, and has been that way in two different leagues, that’s my opinion. That is not a new take. People in the media and other fans have had the same take regarding Pulisic injury history. Plus he cost 70 million.

If he is able to overcome it and plays great, cool. If he can’t ,let’s move the fock on. This is Chelsea FC and we will do great things with or without him, and are doing great things while he is out injured again.

As far as Kai, he has yet to fit in, and has not looked good or comfortable in this league.
That is his level right now. Will that change? I don’t know. HOPEFULLY, he does find his way. When you cost 100 million , you will be under a huge microscope....see hazard.

So that is not hate on Havertz. He does not look like he is worth 100 million at this present time. In the future, who knows.

So there is no need to up shit, and worry about your own squad. I don’t respond to anything you post regarding Barca players, good or bad. It’s none of my business and I don’t give a fock.

I post about about Chelsea and Real Madrid, and I joke and get snarky with Smut and Magilla regarding my team and players being better than theirs ...and that’s it. All that other shit, miss me.

Not totally the same, but it's very possible that he's heading for a Robben-like career arc.

It’s going to take more than a couple of goals here and there to win me over. There has to be at least 3 years of top level play and being healthy to win my love. That’s just how how I am.

My mans gotta keep his ass on the pitch. Period. If he can do that, cool. If he can’t, get him the fock outta here. 70 mil? And Werner cost 47 mil? And Ziyech cost 40 million?

Pulisic and Havertz gotta do the damn thing. No excuses. Let’s go. You are what the numbers say you are. I’m not writing him off....I’m just critiquing what is actually happening.

No hate.

Greg Clarke to quit as FA chairman

November 10, 2020Updated 12:31 PM EST

Greg Clarke has resigned from his role as Football Association chairman, reports Matt Slater.

Clarke was roundly criticised for using the word “coloured” before a Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee on Tuesday, as well as saying that black and South Asian people had “different career interests” from each other and suggesting that being gay was a “life choice”.

Clarke, chairman of the FA since 2016, apologised for his comments. But that has not proved enough and he now intends to stand down both from his position with the FA and his role as Britain’s Fifa vice-president.

In a statement published on Tuesday evening, Clarke said: “My unacceptable words in front of Parliament were a disservice to our game and to those who watch, play, referee and administer it. This has crystallised my resolve to move on.”
What did Clarke say?

In front of MPs, Clarke said: “If I look at what happens to high-profile female footballers, to high-profile coloured footballers, and the abuse they take on social media....social media is a free-for-all.”

Clarke was later interrupted by Kevin Brennan MP, who pointed out the word he had used. “If I said it I deeply apologise,” Clarke said. “I am a product of working overseas, where I was required to use the phrase people of colour. Sometimes I trip over my words.”

Clarke also remarked: “If you go to the IT department at the FA there’s a lot more South Asians than there are Afro Caribbeans. They have different career interests.” Later in his appearance before MPs he described being gay as “a life choice”.

What was the reaction?

Kick It Out executive chair Sanjay Bhandari released a statement in which he said he was “extremely disappointed to see Greg Clarke's comments today.”

Bhandari added: “His use of outdated language to describe black and Asian people as 'coloured' is from decades ago and should remain consigned to the dustbin of history.”

Piara Powar, the Executive Director of the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network, told The Athletic he was “not sure should be speaking on behalf of The FA about diversity issues.”

“He has many interesting things to say, but some of his analysis as to what is happening and why falls short.

“Those two references are insulting. We don’t refer to black people or people of colour as ‘coloured’. And as for the absurd stereotype that Asians belong in the IT department, it unravels most of his previous positive noises.”

Maria Munir, Associate Director of Community Engagement, Stonewall said: “The language we use matters, which is why it’s a shame Greg Clarke used such a harmful phrase like ‘life choice’ to describe being gay.”

What happens next?

Peter McCormick will step into the role as interim FA Chairman with immediate effect.

In a short statement the FA said: “The FA Board will begin the process of identifying and appointing a new chair in due course.”

In a statement to announce his departure, Clarke said: “I am deeply saddened that I have offended those diverse communities in football that I and others worked so hard to include.

“I would like to thank my friends and colleagues in the game for the wisdom and counsel they have shared over the years and resign from the FA with immediate effect.”

Obviously, he is stuck in a time where those words and statements were acceptable. This is typical of some of those old Caucasian men and women who come from racist and prejudice environments, and they stay stuck in that mentality because they never unlearned that behavior.

Hopefully, he gets some social counseling for his issue.

They've been pushing a weekend like this every once in a while, usually when the Premier League is on International break, to try to promote the women's league domestically. There is a pretty good reason for USWNT fans to watch some games this weekend though.

I think NBC got the rights to some of the FAWSL games in the States, and I assume they'll have the Manchester Derby. I'm watching in Canada though which is another thing entirely. Tobin Heath and Christen Press have been starting for MU regularly now, and Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle start for City too, so it should be a really good game to watch tomorrow morning. The Chelsea-Arsenal game on Sunday should be too, but Arsenal has been faltering against their Top 3 competition lately (though they smash bottom half teams). Give 'em a chance eh?

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/13/sports/soccer/uswnt-manchester-united-city.html

For U.S. Stars in England, There Is Now Only Red and Blue

After Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis signed with Manchester City, Tobin Heath and Christen Press joined United. On Saturday, their crash course in a nascent women’s rivalry will go to the next level.

MANCHESTER, England — Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis are waiting to see where, precisely, Tobin Heath is going with this. The first sentence was not, from their point of view, an especially promising start. “We were taught that there is only one club in Manchester,” Heath began. That was probably the point at which their ears pricked up.

“I love learning about all the history,” said Heath, whose own Manchester United history is still measured in weeks. “And we were taught that Manchester is red. Like nobody goes to Manchester City games.” (This is, it is fair to say, a contested interpretation.) “I feel like, City, because they’re this modern global team, in the United States we think they’re a really big club. But here in Manchester, it’s not a big club.”

Lavelle and Mewis, wearing matching City tops, have leaned in a little closer to their laptop screen now. Heath has paused, trying to find the shimmy that might get her out of this one. “And this,” she said, choosing her words carefully, “is what we’re being taught.” It is something of a drop of the shoulder, but it works. Lavelle and Mewis have started laughing.

“I was waiting to see how you were going to wrap that one up,” Mewis responds.

All three of them, of course — together with Christen Press, who has wisely chosen to stay out of the whole thing — are far more used to being teammates than rivals. When healthy, they have all been mainstays of the United States’ national team since 2017. All four appeared in last summer’s World Cup final.

Now, though, they find themselves on opposing sides of an intractable divide. This summer, first Mewis and then Lavelle signed for Manchester City in England’s Women’s Super League. A few weeks later, Heath and Press agreed to join Manchester United. Since then, all four have had a crash course in the tropes of the relationship between the teams.

“The pride of the club is very real, and very strong,” Heath said. Though United has had a women’s team only since 2018 — a delay their fellow U.S. star Megan Rapinoe has described as “disgraceful” — both the staff at the club and her new teammates have informed her that the enmity still applies, that it “spills over from the men’s team to the women’s.”

She has no doubt that this weekend’s derby match between the sides — with United, a little unexpectedly, top of the table and City, still finding its bearings in fifth — brings with it an added frisson of tension.

It is the same, evidently, for Mewis and Lavelle across town. Because of the pandemic, Lavelle has done little exploring of her new home beyond “getting takeout coffee,” but both she and Mewis have internalized the idea that “Manchester is blue.” “We’ve adopted that, and we take pride in that,” Mewis said.

Far more pronounced than their new differences, though, are the similarities between them. It is telling, for example, that as much as the four players have bought into the Mancunian rivalry, when any of them refers to “our team,” the others know they mean, first and foremost, the United States.

Though the national team has not played a game since March, the four players remain connected to it not only through frequent Zoom meetings with the coaching staff but by a shared, and deep-rooted, culture. “The identity of the team is something you take with you,” Press said. “Every time you play, you have it there. It can’t be lost. We all just carry it a bit differently.”

The reasons that have brought them all to Manchester, too, are held in common. They are here, by and large, simply to play: to “feel like a normal soccer player again,” as Heath put it, to enjoy what Mewis sees as the unadulterated pleasure of “having games and having practice.”

None could have found that by remaining in the United States. The National Women’s Soccer League season fell victim to the coronavirus pandemic in March. Though it was eventually replaced by a summer cup competition in Utah and an abbreviated fall series, both Heath and Press opted not to take part. With that over, it is not clear, at this point, when the league will return to the field.

As Europe’s leagues started to return, then, the appeal was obvious. “It has been such a blessing,” Press said. “Tobin and I have been out since March: no team environment, no games. What a source of joy it’s been to run on a beautiful grass pitch every day, to be around a team again.”

Initially, after months of isolating, Press worried that she might find it strange to be in such close contact with teammates. “It had been so long since I had social contact, I was worried how I would be that first week just being around people,” she said. But it came back, she said, “quickly and easily and joyfully.”

“It’s the longest I’ve been away,” Press said. “There’s the saying that you only know how much you love something when it’s taken away. I feel such a sense of nostalgia for what football is supposed to mean to me. I feel that joy every time I go on the pitch.”

Their impression of the league they have found, too, is uniform: the Women’s Super League has the air of a rising force. They are not the only global stars to have found themselves in England: Alex Morgan joined Tottenham in September and made her debut this month; Sam Kerr, the Australian striker, arrived at Chelsea at the beginning of the year. Arsenal can call on Danielle van de Donk and Vivianne Miedema, two stars of the Dutch team the United States defeated in last summer’s World Cup final.

“I feel bad pitting the two leagues against each other,” Lavelle said, when asked to compare the style of play in the W.S.L. to that of the N.W.S.L. “I wouldn’t put one over the other. In America, it is more aggressive, more transitional, you run a lot, cover a lot of ground. Here, you have to break teams down more tactically. I had high expectations, but it’s exceeded them.”

Press has found much of the same. “It’s an oversimplification to say one is transitional and one more organized,” she said. “Organized does not mean slower. It is a different challenge: like Rose said, it’s more of a puzzle how you’re going to break a team down.”

That, though, is just one part of the adventure. Press and Heath have played in Europe before; for Lavelle and Mewis, it is their first taste of professional soccer away from home. “Packing up your life and moving halfway around the world” is never easy, Press said, but doing it in the midst of a pandemic it is more difficult still.

I assume a lot of these people (besides MAGA shit heads) know it's a risk but just convince themselves it's not going to happen to them?

Or extremely selfishly decide they're willing to get it in order to attend something important, ignoring the infection spread that happens from them as well as the burden it puts on hospital workers?

Like the wedding in Maine that was a Covid spreading event that killed 7 people, none of whom actually attended the wedding.

It appears Chelsea is doing everything within their resources to get him healthy.
And if they can get him healthy, can he stay healthy in a physical league? Germany is a physical league as well and he had injury issues there.

So would he better off in a less physical league ? What is the balance that we need to have and expect of him? Play him in big games, leave him out of small games?

Anyway , Newcastle shouldn’t give us too much trouble. They are solid, but we should be able to get the win.

Some words from Lamps:

“Christian has had a problematic injury and I think it is normal, every player is different. Christian had a history of muscle injuries before he came to us and he has had them again. Everything about Christian, how he is around the training ground and how he prepares is absolutely perfect.

“We need to try and find the rig balance between playing, training and resting throughout the week. He is a young player still and it is not abnormal, we will find a solution and I don’t want to make more out of it than it is because we want Christian available with his ability, but at the minute he is injured and in the short term he is a work in progress.

“We have a great medical team here and we are very joined up in trying to get the best out of Pulisic as we possibly can.

From all accounts, Lampard largely determines who plays and who doesn't based on performances in training. That seems like an obvious thing, but when you got a bunch of young guys giving 110% and going full steam ahead on the training ground trying to desperately prove their worth (and Puli has definitely had to do this since he got to Chelsea) you're increasing the risk of injury, especially with this chaotic pandemic schedule. I'm kind of shocked at times watching the behind the scenes videos the club posts. Guys are tackling and laying teammates the fuck out on the training ground. Who knows what goes on day in and day out, but maaaayyyybbbeeee tone down the constant intrateam competition a wee bit. For the most part we know what the ideal starting lineup is anyway.

They aren’t any different than how Chelsea practiced under Mourinho,Scolari,Hiddink,Ancelotti, etc. And Lamps played under all of them.
Chelsea most intense practices were under Conte, and Lamps practices are less
intense than those.

So does he have to specialize training for one particular player?

He reminds me of Robben. Arjen was extremely injury prone, but was able to play in big games to help Chelsea win titles. It was constantly an up and down issue, and Mourinho grew tried of it, so he left for Real Madrid.....and that led to us getting the strong Malouda !!

How long would you be willing to deal with this before cutting ties?

We went with Arjen for three years....that’s how long I’m willing to give it. It’s year 2.

>So does he have to specialize training for one particular

To be fair, Lamps has slightly toned down the "competition in training" rhetoric a bit since he now has the players he wants. Last season it was truly survival of the fittest with guys basically pitted against each other. This season the new arrivals have been slotted in as starters since they day they arrived. So maybe things have already changed a bit. I dunno.

>We went with Arjen for three years....that’s how long I’m

This sounds reasonable. Like I said before, he's never had an ACL, MCL, achilles or limb break. It's possible that he outgrows these relatively minor (but nagging) muscular issues.

the City game yes, but otherwise they've dominated possession in nearly every match so far this year.

They're having a great start precisely because Mourinho is totally adapting his style, something I never though he'd do at this point in his career.

48. "Why do creative players suck when they move to La Liga?"
In response to Reply # 0
Sun Nov-22-20 02:22 AM by allStah

I think in order to be really good in La Liga you have to be a direct player, a player who can go straight forward and really be able to score. This is why Bale, Ronaldo, etc were able to have success.

Players like Fabregas, Coutinho, Isco, Malcolm, and we are seeing it with hazard, are simply not allowed to stay on the ball because of the low blocks that most teams play. So instant double teams come in and keep everything in the box narrow. You will not be able to wait to do take-ons, and you will not be left alone 1v1 on an island.

Ronaldo at MU was an insane dribbler, but when he went to La Liga ,he became a very intense direct player. In his prime, Ronaldo was just ridiculously skilled, where he could adjust his game to any coach, any system, or any league. Look at him now playing more as a striker, and still being very effective in the twilight stage of his career.

Fabregas at Arsenal was a football genius, but then he went to Barcelona and his game faded. He returned to the EPL and was even more magical than his previous stint. He was a very important piece in Chelsea, winning 2 epl titles within 3 years.

Basically, you have to be a direct scorer in La Liga . Messi uses his dribbling ability to go straight for goal, or he does direct 1-2s ,and cuts through small openings and goes directly for goal.

In order for Hazard to really excel, he will have to be more of a scorer, as oppose to trying to dribble and swivel against low block defenses and double teams. He will have to get the ball and move directly to strike, but that is clearly not in his game.

Plus this Real Madrid team is lifeless.

And knee jerk, just looking to attack. Defensive. Go to espn with Max and screaming Steven for that.

Anyone, I never said that creative players don’t exist in La Liga. I said why do
creative players suck when they go to La Liga if they don’t change their game,
or adapt. And I used Ronaldo and Fabregas as positive and negative examples.

And I clearly gave examples as to what I was referring to. I used Messi as an example as well, where his creative ability is more direct.

That was my point. Creative players like Fab, Coutinho, Hazard, etc who have more of a build up when they play, requiring a lot of time on the ball to really get going, seem to struggle based on how teams play in La Liga.

Also, I think there is a difference between being TECHNICAL, DIRECT ,and CREATIVE. There are players like Ronaldo and Messi who can adapt , and be all the above based on what is needed. But then there are players who are just straight creative and are unable to be more direct.

Even the original Ronaldo was more direct, where he would get the ball and just dribble straight ahead at players, not really needing a lot of build up. When he got fat and slowed down, he no longer had that fast, direct ability to go for goal, and his game suffered.

So if you want to chime in without trying to degrade and belittle someone, do so. If not, just keep it moving. You don’t have to agree or disagree.....

One day you hype up hazard for real, the next its hes struggling.

La liga has plenty of creative players. Cesc didnt pull it off because there were better creative players in front of him on barca's squad.

Messi's now creatively direct? What are you even saying?

Couts struggled because he was a bad fit in a bad system. He looked good in koeman's system this year.

and will be out for 3 - 6 weeks and he wasn’t awarded a penalty kick for the act. And it was a clear penalty.

At this point, he should just leave. We kind of saw the same thing with Bale in La Liga. He never had injury issues in the EPL. He goes to RM and could barely stay on the pitch.

If defenders know they can do whatever without being penalized, hazard doesn’t stand a chance of surviving in the league or staying on the pitch. Dude is out there getting hacked, especially when he does his swivel around defenders. They’ll just foul hard to stop the attack.

Now he will lose form again while recovering, and have to rebuild all over.

I know Belgium and Martinez are losing their shit right now because he hasn’t played for the national team in a long ass time, and they might not have him for the championship rounds in the League of Nations....

This shit is fucked up all the way around. He missed 20 games in his 7 years at Chelsea. He has now missed 37 games for Real Madrid in about a year’s time.

Hazard is the most fouled player in La Liga. Despite only playing 31 percent of the matches, Hazard has been fouled 4.1 times per 90 mins. That’s more than Messi, and more than any of his seasons at Chelsea.

We were in total control of the group.

Got plagued with injuries, bad timing. Can’t field a healthy squad. So more than likely will not get out of the group.

No Ramos. Hazard out for possibly 3-6 weeks. It’s a wrap.

Rodrygo, Vinicius all to young to move the line and ball.

Taking the L now.

all you have to do is beat Monchengladbach and you're through. or tie and hope inter wins.

Real is 7 points behind. Barca is 10 points behind.

Play the youngins, take the L and regroup.

We still depend on an old Ramos to hold the line

Modric Old
Marcelo Old
Benzems still productive, but getting old
Vinny all dribbling, no direction

Then we got players constantly in and out with injuries.

We lack stability and continuity...Man city is the same way ...both teams dominated
the last decade, now they are old, lifeless, and need to rebuild.

There is nothing wrong with taking the L. You’re a Barca guy so you should be used to that.

Jets and Mets? Are you from queens?

When I lived in NY, most people who followed the Mets and Jets were from queens....Jets used to play at Shea.

and form some consistency.

We didn’t get a clean sheet, Though. We got to get back on top of that.

Keep this defense going, and who knows ...Fock around and win the league.

more of the number 10 in Mourinho’s system.

Either one could win EPL player of the year.

If they can't get back to a Europa league spot by the end of the year, however, then yes, at that point.

Clubs are not spending money during the pandemic. Revenue around all leagues has
decreased. Even though his value has fallen to about 50/60 million, clubs
are trying to save every last penny because they don’t know what the future
holds.

get 40 or 50m and let them (Pogba on the field, Raiola off it) be someone elses problem.

edit: after this season he only has a year left
