"the smartest backpacker"

i moved this post to the lesson only because the subject matter i'm about to raise will probably turn this post into an extra 100 replies. and it's subject is more about a topic on jay---as opposed to the jay post in the okayartist board---

well i was gonna save my last 13 day experience for a superupdate tommorow. but i'd figure i'd talk a lil here.

but jay was hogging the computer.

my dream is to see black artists more aware of the power of the internet. most laugh (kelis), some are scurred (erykah), some don't have a clue (wu), some are aware (chuck d), some have made a profit (prince).....but most still sleep.

i never intended for him to see the site (i think benzino post caught his eye) but once he was ignoring the mix to see what y'all had to say i think he got more intrigued.

and wasn't mad at all at the dissing posts either (we did a search).

sometimes when you are separated from...well separated from some sort of focus group besides your boys it's hard to really know people's honest opinion of you. i mean, some of the charges are downright mean, some are heartfelt, some are over the top....but at least you have a feel for what's going on. he couldn't turn away from the posts. i know that pos and dave are here all the time. just in disguise as not to get the wrong reaction from people.

i asked him how involved is he with his website....

he smells bait....and don't think for a minute that i wouldn't ask him to be an okayartist. personally i was looking for someone that wouldn't meet approval to the vast majority. but at the end of the day, he is a more than capable craftsman. and i think the controversy is good. (before you cry sellout, i said nothing of charging folks to come here)

but that wasn't my point.

at the end of the day i just wanna say that (not that i ever had a negative opinion...well...--okay i never liked the music to "lucky me") i/we could have never been more wrong about an individual. jay is one of the coolest mofo's i've met in a sec. com confirmed this to me 5 years ago when jay and him did some dates in europe sometime back.

and he's the smartest backpacker i know.

yes...he's a backpacker. just a lil smarter in crossing to their side of the fence.

his favorite mc's are emcees that don't have triangles next to their name in billboard.

his whole positioning on "takeover" he insists was not out of spite, but to infuse the good ole battles of old with hip hop. i can't argue with that since i still utter that roxanne shante is only good for steady fuckin everytime i see bdp.

---sorry y'all (don't want to erase post) i'll save the rest for an update (we are still stuck on "takeover" and i have to master at 10am....so i might have to wait til the middle of the week to finish update.

i have more to type.....but i am needed at board again, and i don't want to retype this post so imma just send now and countinue lata man.

if i ever went solo, my favorite drummer would be me bragging sig:

"How great are the Roots live? Their drummer.oh my god, he's such a great
drummer. He's so good. So good! Such a great drummer. Is he one of those
musicians that knows how to play everything? He's such a great drummer. I
love them."

I always expected Jay to be cool I aint surprised by your observations or whatever.
I never expected the whole "backpacker" thing although I dont really picture Jay listening to Nelly or something.
Fuck selling out, okayplayer should be about diversity anyhow as long as its all good music..plus its better to bring people in that would create room for discussion.
I remember someone telling me that some labels make their interns read sites like okaypalyer to get a consensus of public opinion..I hope this site has a wide variety of opinions that reflect the masses.
Ok I am hungry I need to heat up this burrito.

Yep, my brother was watching a documentary about marketing and trend hunters/cool hunters. They interviewed this cool looking bling-bling busta rhymes-clothed young man who said he was picked up from the streets by a major marketing firm. His job was to pick up new trends..... and he used the internet as his tool. There was a few shots of him writing something at okayplayer.com! he was even posting a message just to show them what he was doing

faker! he's probably sitting in his big chair with a clever smile, kissing his gold, right now

think the "power" in the internet is? money? reaching the masses? power in the ability to gain some independence? the propagation of your art?

just wondering because a large part of the reason i'm into graphic design/website shit is because i want to aid communities in realizing the "power" of the internet. that, being a task that most designers serving the quote"inthemainstreamtypes"unquote don't ever really have to consider.

Well, he got points for saying U.G.K. was his favorite hip-hop group. He got kudos for that. I guess alot of cats don't like him, because he portrays himself real pompous...most cats have a hard time paying their bills (smart or not).

I guess it's a contradiction of sorts...being Kane wasn't any less pompous. But we've grown, and so has hip-hop. Wearing jewlery, and having 3 (count'em...three) ladies on your lap was cool on a Cold Chillin album cover, but on MTV? Yeah, it's a contradiction. Still, it's a little hard to swallow.

Appreciate ?uest's effort to enlighten us to the fact that some artists aren't always what they portray themselves to be. Anyway, I feel his point about the potential about the internet. I get knocked by my girl all the time for being on it too much, but there's just so much to do with not enough time. Either I'm on mirc, here, or some of the many sites that I frequent. I think the best way to interest those stalwarts that try to avoid the internet at any cost is to introduce them to a site that deals with one of the interests. For example, I love okayplayer because it deals with music and is the website for many of the artists that I support. If that doesn't work, then just discuss monetary benefits. But, no matter how you do it, it must be done, because nobody needs to be left behind in this technology age.

Even though this may be unrealistic, maybe ?uest can ask him when he's going to come to St. Thomas (most of ya'll probably didn't catch the VI reference in All I Need) to put on a show for de brothas.

reading the jay article in rolling stone made me respect him more as a businessman/artist (i've yet to feel the need to listen to any of his records .. yet). and its always interesting to know that artists can use the internet positively, to possibly improve their work. good times.

and like donwill said, i wanna know what he's listening to ..

lurk here on the reg
and industry pros too...

that doesn't stop me from speaking my mind, in fact it spurs me to speak diplomatically about what I'm thinking - because chances are cats are gonna see it.
I'm more inclined to say on OKP what I won't say in a review - like you said earlier - this is your house - and I've been a guest in your house long enough to feel at home. You know?
Adversely, a lot of artists say they never check their site because they can't stand the cruel things that they read bout themselves.
I get emails sometimes from people who read stuff I've written and I'm still so amazed that I've affected this person who lives in Australia or Sweden or something. I think artists would be pretty intrigued with their voice on the internet and how far it can go.
Remember the Talib/3rd Rail post? That was worldwide! lol For the good or the bad damn near everyone heard what they had to say. If a Jay Z or an Erykah posted something, guaranteed that even the cat who never bought an album would read the words.

So with that said - give Jay a big ole hug. He was nice when I met him back in '97 - and he'd never amemba me in a million years - but he was nice and I'll always remember him that way.

I am glad that the internet has tuned Jay into what the streets is thinking. It actually makes me happy to see so much talk about Jay around OKP. I must admit that I wrote Jay off after Vol. 2, but with the Blueprint and the fact that he is down with some of the collest mofo's in Hip Hop intrigues me. What if Jay released an album filled with positive and political views? What if Jay surrounded himself with instruments instead of Champagne bottles and drum machines. I have a feeling were gaining closer to that reality (at least I hope so). I wanna tell my grand kids that the dopest MC had diversity and lasted.
Well that's my two cents...

all these folks are posting stuff like "maybe jayz will become 'concious' now and talk about politics and use intruments". That wouldnt be that fly because that's not who he is. I honestly wouldnt want Jay-Z rhyming an album about mumia and assatta shakur etc. Jay-Z is a soulful artist though and you can feel that on blueprint. As long as he stays true and does what he does best that is the shit.
Not every artist has to be like common and dead prez, that would be boring.
I love M.O.P. Jay-Z Dre Busta Slum and whoever just as much as all the 'concious' okayplayer artists. Anyways I was just noticing how so many folks were like is Jay-z gonna get 'concious' now well he should.
'concious' is a ridiculous term anyways.

Steve, what is conxious anyways? I consider that a dumb term aswell and it was never used in the same context as Jay Z. I never said that I wanted Jay to rhyme about Mumia and civil rights. I simply said that I would love to see Jay spread his wings. The man has so much talent and I would love to see him explore it. And how do you know what is "true" to Jay. Jay could be doing what the streets wants him to do right now and really be holding back. This upcoming Unplugged session is a portal to his potential. After reading about him as a business man and now hearing his new material his is definatly my favorite in the game right now.Hehe...it's funny. I remember when Com was a "Street" rapper and then he did Retrospect for life, shit hit the fan. The patern is starting to repeat with Jay too, watch and see...

but I think this is the mentality that steve is referring to. why would you want to see 'common's pattern' repeat through jay-Z? you have already seen and experienced an artist growing the way common has and continues to do. you have already seen artists such as andre3000 grow too. jay-z has been growing at his own clip and becoming the artist and performer he wants to be. jay seems like an individualist to me respecting his own opinion and judgment and so its not like he is scared to touch on other subjects or experiment more musically or lyrically. instead of trying to envision what he is going to become why not deal with who he is...and be delighted if you like his music and simply accept it if you don't. otherwise you continue to be disappointed by your own expectations. of course we are always going to have high expectations for certain artists based on what we think they are capable of, but like all things there is a middle path to walk.

"Observe the ugly mess which most men make of their sex lives-and observe the mess of contradictions which they hold as their moral philosophy. One proceeds from the other. Love is our response to our highest values-and can be nothing else. Let a man corrupt his values and his view of existence, let him profess that love is not self-enjoyment, but self denial, that virtue consists, not of pride, but of pity or pain or weakness or sacrifice, that the noblest love is born, not of admiration, but of charity, not in response to values, but in response to flaws-and he will have cut himself in two. His body will not obey him, it will not respond, it will make him impotent toward the woman he professes to love and draw him to the lowest type of whore he can find. His body will always follow the ultimate logic of his deepest convictions; if he believes that flaws are values, he has damned existence as evil and only the evil will attact him. He has damned himself and he will feel that depravity is all he is worth enjoying. He has equated virtue with pain and he will feel that his body has vicious desires of its own which his mind cannot conquer, that sex is sin, that true love is a pure emotion of spirit. And then he will wonder why lover brings him nothing but boredom, and sex-nothing but shame." -taken from 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand

My beef with Jay has been that I got tired of the subject matter. I mean Blueprint is the first Jay I bought since Reasonable Doubt (I spin, so of course I have Jay singles on wax to keep the party moving). Not because I don't think he can rhyme but because I tired of the cars, ice and girls, etc. etc. and Swizz Beats (hated him). I also felt that the albums between RD and Blueprint were like ZJay goign thru the motion. It was kinda like he knew how dope he was so he was rolling out the bed and recording an album over breakfast yawning. Shit he knew it was gonna go Plat. He knew the chickens, wannabe thugs, etc. were dying for more Jigga so hey no problem.

That being said. No one since Biggie can drop rhymes about the material shit in life like Jay. Furthermore, even though I get tired of the subject matter at times, Jay raps rings around some of the "conscious" rappers that folks around here sweat so much. At the end of the day hip-hop is about how you say what you say, not necessatily waht you say. I mean we have plenty of hip-hop classics about absolutely nothing or "negative shit (Biz's Pickin' Boogers, Special Ed's I got It Made, etc.) If Jay started rapping about revolution, I'd have to hunt that mofo down and beat him with a stick. Leave that shit to Dead Prez. But Jay hsa to be one of the most clever cats in the game with the way he drops one liners in his rhymes so I'm sure he can he can find ways of dropping an occasional positive jewel in a rhyme for the youth besides "hey I dealt drugs doesn't mean you have to" That shit always seems so hollow to me when cats say that but continue to rhyme about drugs.

Jay Z's material just bores me. I am not saying he is not a good emcee or that he hasn't made good songs, but his music is boring. He is not very innovative, doesn't really take any chances, and I am not talking about Outkast chances or Mos Def chances, just a lil something to show that he is trying to be an artist, rather than a businessman who is a musician. I guess that's not him though and I guess that's why I am not a fan.

Gotta disagree here only in the sense that I am concerned about EXECUTION more than idea. Which means, if Jay can flip a revolutionary theme, why should he hold back? If Biz Markie has a serious song he wants to drop and it's *done well*, why should he say "I'm Biz Markie, I can't ever do a serious song". That's stagnation right there, homeboy.

Everybody should contribute according to their abilities. If Jay can freak a song about Mumia, he should spit that shit, preconceptions be damned.

“Freestyle” is coming to Washington DC!! OKP Majrleaguer and myself have collaborated to bring this critically acclaimed film to the DC hip-hop massive.

“Freestyle” is a documentary on the art of freestyling, featuring performances from Mos Def, Pharoah Monche, Planet Asia, Freestyle Fellowship, Supernatural, JUICE, and many others (including footage of the now legendary Supernatural/Craig G battle). The film also features a rarely seen freestyle session between Tupac and Biggie shortly before the two men’s rivalry and subsequent murders (and they are so joyous as they rhyme, it is hard to imagine they would become bitter enemies later in their lives). The film also features commentary from Talib Kweli, The Last Poets, Toni Blackmon (of Freestyle Union) and many more.

What: “Freestyle” documentary
When: Tuesday, November 27th 9:15pm (with encore dates from December 3rd-6th, 9:30pm every night)
Where: Visions Theater (1927 Florida Avenue NW, off of Florida and Connecticut)

For More Info: http://www.visionsdc.com

(and show up EARLY, the place only has 200 seats)

Also, be on the lookout for the after-event NOVEMBER 27th (ignore the other date I put up earlier), featuring performances by former Rawkus Recordings artist Shabaam Sadeeq and other local underground luminaries (sponsored by Raptivism, with other sponsors to be announced). D'Evils was NEVER a conscious song. People get it twisted and think that song was some morality tale that's anti-money. In a way it is, but come on, "I fed her fifties till her shit made sense"? Any song where the protagonist forcefeeds a woman hostage money and said protagonist never truly faces consequences is far from a morality tale. And I definitely would never call "D'Evils" political rap.

Unless there was some consequence at the end that I can't remember, that is...it's been years since I heard that song...I always wondered why folks thought it was "positive" though.

In response to Reply # 11

the positive versus negative discussion aside...i'll say this, i'd personally rather hear less about Jay saying he's clapping this person, that person, and the third person. "Blueprint" is fairly toned down for the genre he's in -- in fact, track for track, it's probably the least bodies caught on a Jay album...LOL. He's cussing a lot less too on there. Basically, I'm all for creativity. I'm just trying to see homeboy push himself, because if you look at the lyrics to the "lyrical exercise" joint vs. the lyrics on "izzo", well, one seems a lot more focused than the other. not that every joint has to be overly conceptual, but more attention paid line for line, less filler (as someone noted "what else can I say about dude, he gets bizzay" is straight filler).

it's all opinions though.

i would like to hear him get on more primo tracks though. i think they bring a lot out of each other when they collab.

a com/jay or mos/jay collab would be interesting, as would a slick rick/jay or kane/jay collab.

well Jay does have SOME political content. Y'all are acting like dude is Spice 1 or something. I think "Dopeman" in particular is a critical analysis of the justice system, from a hustler's perspective, but an analysis nonetheless. give homeboy a little credit, eh? It IS in him, he just limits it to isolated instances rather than make entire albums concerning social awareness, a la dead prez. Just a random Mumia reference here, a "I'm overcharging y'all for what you did to the Cold Crush" there, and so on. His "freestyle" on the WTC tragedy is a fine example of Jay's ability to play social observer outside the fairly limited sphere of criminal life.

okay i went on the deep end. but my point is i don't know no person that cash dosn't rule. and me included. sometimes i don't feel like hearing about speaking to some kids at high schools. or feel like smacking the shit out someone when they look at my glass in a club and realize that it's not juice i'm drinking and cry "hey!!!!!! what they do guy!!!!!!!". or --hey many a cat here is ready to cry ypocrite cause i did a jay record.

at the end of the day i have to be true to myself. as i feel jay does too. he loves welcome to detroit ("i listen to it in the gym") as well as aerosmith's greatest hits. talib and com are some of his favorite mc's. he quotes the simpsons and seinfield (think i heard him talking about "curb your enthusiasm" ep in rehersal) and he made the audience do "spirit fingers" before he broke into "izzo"....

so yes, the man who's a pimp in every sense of the word is also a nerd deep down. who happens to be in touch/control of th hip hop youth today.

i know as a 30 year old some things just change automatically. riq has matured very muh into a mellow cat wheras at 22 he'd be ready to beat you down for sneezing.

and kamal? man fatherhood changed his ass too.

as for me...i decided that my 30's were not gonna be my 20's so i got my spirit, my art and health in order.

and who knows? (correction..jay has one studio cut on record. unfortunantely it's a cover of the same johnny guitar watson song we were about to record with bb king "lovin you"...jay's is called "i hear people"...i think it's his reort to prodigy who as you know threatend his life a few times on the new mobb album. but it's more......well...mellow?--i guess that comes with age. i doubt that this will be our last time working.

who knows? lesson pt 4?

talib, jay, riq, com?

hmmmmmmm...lemme get on phone....

And thank you for doing so Quest, cause these hypocritical mofo's around here (and the world over) act like Jay-Z is some effin super hero and shit. That man is simply that, a man. I'm glad that you are giving us a peek into what he's like minus the ice and the bravado cause I know a real complex character lies beneath.
Second of all thank you for calling out some of the characteristics of the so called "concious" artists. People need to stop being fooled just cause some artist has found his or her gimic and clung to it for dear life.

Lastly, I don't want to see Jay-Z yappin bout no Mumia and all that other shit cause if you listen to his music and don't just hear it then you can probably guess what his political stance would be on such a subject. How could he not have a view point on such a subject, being a black man in America.

Ya'll got me amped, i think i'ma star a "Leave Jigga Alone" campaign.

Jay has already talked about Mumia. Get a late pass.

I ask again, why is everyone acting like Jay has zero political content? Am I the only one actually paying attention to his records? And I don't even OWN any of his records!

I am perplexed.

Thoughtfully yours,

Spirit Equality

How Much: $6
For More Info: http://www.visionsdc.com

On the 27th, there will be an introduction by the director Kevin Fitzgerald and Q&A afterward

PLEASE SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!

It goes down at the Kaffa House (1212 U St NW), 10pm-2am.

Send questions to alancpage@aol.com

Peace,

You get my drift though. I'm simply saying that I don't want to see Jay transform into a dead prez. dead prez does dead prez pretty damn good and i wouldn't want to see him make a complete 360 degree turn around and get on some super political shyt.

Folks dont realize that.
I guess it's the whole deal with public image. People have this idea of how folks are, but truth is everyone is basically a multi-dimensional person..but people get this like iconic idea of how people are from what they are in the media or what they potray through their art. Everyone is basically the same, subject to the same desires attitudes and inclinatons and faults and shit. Sometimes though, I feel betrayed when people are not upfront about who they are but they really dont have to be and they shouldnt be. I got off topic though. Its like how little girls idolize britney spears as the quintessential role model when for all we know she could be a sex crazed coke head bitch. On this site people idealize their favorite artists in the same way or have negative perceptions of the artists they dont like.
The whole cult of celebrity is always so weird.
Now lesson part 4? that would be hot.

Steve

When is this collabo gonna happen? That's the fire I'm waiting on!

Ask Jay when is he gonna do a Black August tour. We'll be in Brazil this summer (I'm just joking. I'd love to see him do Black August but I doubt very seriously the organizers will go for it).

Frank: Many Christmases ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reached for the last one they had -- but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way.
Kramer: What happened to the doll?
Frank: It was destroyed. But out of that, a new holiday was born -- a Festivus for the rest of us!

In the spirit of Festivus, I will use this sorry board to occasionally air my own grievances. As Frank put it so eloquently in that immortal "Seinfeld" episode three Festivuses ago, "I got a lot of problems with you people! And now you're gonna hear about it!" I'll spare you folks the feats of strength.

Catch where you coming from with letting Jay be Jay, but I think he has talked about doing an album like that. I think Big said the same thing. An album with no promotion, no cover art, nothing. Bare bones with just the real. None of that trying to sell millions bullshit. Maybe he still has it planned, but just trying to get his money right first. Trust me though, I think it would be his best selling.

I don't doubt that Jay is a "backpacker". To keep this long in the game you gotta listen to everyone. Though I can't relate to the topics, I think his lyrics is on point and how quickly people forget "Can I Get Open", "Feeling It", or even "D Evils". Eh....

And the two Jays need to get together...sunovabitch hahaha

Ahm...ummm ?uest: did you read the Lenny article in the Vibe mag? How does it feel to have the Roots be the Saviors of music?

This post reminds me of when people were all up in arms about the rumors of Mos Def and Beyonce dating. People act as if artists live the stereotypical bullshit labels that we put on them as musicians. As if "conscious" MCs can't get along personably with, uhh...un-conscious ones. I'm not the biggest Jay-Z fan in the world, but I don't sit around imagining that dude is a bad person or whatever. Why wouldn't he be cool?

Yo, I'm down with J but...

I love the rhymes on RDoubt, Vol.2, Vol.3 and The Blueprint but I mean, this IS okayplayer. Here I like to at least pretend we reward people based on their lyrical content as well as their hits. I seriously do love J guys but we can't stop challenging the things he says, he does put money first, degrades women, etc...Let's never stop questioning artists, asking them to think more before they drop homophobic rhymes, etc...

Skillwise Jay has it, his flow, his wordplay is amazing. Still, I prefer listening to Mos, Talib, Dead Prez, Common because their hearts are closer to mine. I listen to them and not only does my head nod, but my heart agrees as well. When I hear "Money Ain't A Thang" or "Girls, Girls" only half of me is satisfied, the musical side, but not my mind/soul. I'm holdin it down for the okayskeptics, but jay- you still a pimp.

Pax,
Hania.

See, this may be the problem:

What is 'real' to one may be melodrama or 'commercial' to the next.

I find that a lot of music listeners seem to listen to artists that share their views. To me, this is understandable . However, it can be limiting if taken to an extreme.

I am only 24 years old and I don't even pretend that I have it all figured out. *Paraphrase from memory* "A man who knows something knows that he knows nothing at all." - Badu

I enjoy hiphop mostly because I enjoy listening to well-expressed perspectives whether they mesh with mine or not.

Some of my favorites are 2Pac, Common, JayZ, Outkast, and Blackstar. IMO, all of these acts (and several others) are good at laying out their ideas about their lives and surroundings in general.

I seriously
>do love J guys but
>we can't stop challenging the
>things he says, he does
>put money first, degrades women,
>etc...Let's never stop questioning artists,
>asking them to think more
>before they drop homophobic rhymes,
>etc...

I'm with you on this. But, this challenge has to be across the board. To me, it isn't fair or sensible for me to condemn a JayZ or a Common for what he says on record while ignoring what my neighbors or family members are doing around me everyday. I see this all the time, though.

> When I hear "Money
>Ain't A Thang" or "Girls,
>Girls" only half of me
>is satisfied, the musical side,
>but not my mind/soul.
>I'm holdin it down for

I'd say that Jay-Z, like 2Pac, is better to listen to and digest in full albums. Being that I don't pay much attention to the radio and I only watch videos occasionally, I tend to be an 'album person'.

Singles matter to me when it is an act that I hope will catch on. (ex: I was pulling Kweli's "The Blast" to take off) When it is JayZ or someone like that, I don't rely on the singles as much as I rely on listening to the full albums before forming an opinion.

Either way, Blackstar (together and separately) and Common have very powerful stand-alone songs. Sometimes, it bothers me that some of their strongest songs will never be heard by those who run from anything that may be .. (begin terror music) .. "conscious" or thought-provoking .. (end terror music after screams of pain and agony).

assuming mc's in general were drawn into the business by a love a hiphop, why wouldn't they be backpackers to some degree. sees to me thats where the 'truest' hiphop is. when a cat blows up he's pimped by the record execs, and fits a mold to sell more records to a mainstream (large white) audience. despite the 'art' they're putting out as long as they still have that love for hiphop they'll be turning to the underground to pleasure their ears.

No need for elitism.

Actually, this issue was brought to my attention by
another. So, I thought I'd contribute my 2 cents.

But my dear, Albert...I didn't realize you were on the
payroll.

Pierce Your Ears.

When we communicate with one another and we feel that we have connected and we think we're understood, I think we have a feeling of almost spiritual communion ... I think it's what we live for.

While technically I'm closer to the end of my life than I've ever been, I actually feel more than ever that I have all the time in the world.

They say that dreams are only real as long as they last. Couldn't you say the same thing about life?

The worst mistake that you can make is to think you're alive when really you're asleep in life's waiting room.

You can have so much damn fun in your dreams. And, of course, everyone knows FUN RULES.

There's only one instant, and it's right now, and it's eternity.

44. "If ?est and Jay really"
In response to Reply # 39

Concept a movement in music...

ok if ?est and Jay are really reading each post, then i have a question for you guys. ok jay, you're one of the dopest and popular cats out there right now. and with this position comes power. what are you doing with this power? power= you have the ears, mind, heart, and attention of millions of people. what are you trying to do to help the cause? want to let you know that what you did for and with the roots is great. meaning doing a live jawn and all. not saying the roots needed help and people didn't know who they were, but i think this is the big break they needed as a whole. side note to ?est, i just love the fact that you are all over the place right now working with everybody. and while you're out there, you're still reppin' okp and the roots.

but back to the power thing. are you trying to use your power to let the masses know that there are people out here who are really talking about something? it's hard getting your voice heard, when we're going up against people like you. meaning you have eff'ed up the game for a lot of cats. ie.. jay drops cd....sells 4 million or better. new artist comes out. you have to sell at least 2 million or better to get heard. why? cause you're going up against people like jay and them. why is that hard? cause we're spittin things that the people are not used to hearing. you have programmed their minds on this "bling, bling.. i got hoes... spending money that you really don't have ish" so when people who are trying to teach and show cats there is a better way and not all cats talk about the same thing. they ain't trying to hear us.

you should really keep that in mind yo. you have the power to not even put or get people put on. but you have the power to expose people to new things. ie the whole okayplayer movement... they will listen to you and others like you. and since you do know this and know that there are positive things out there. i now charge you to do so. why? cause you know better.

peace and blessing

In response to Reply # 44

The 'real' power is with the consumer:

Almost everyone is limited in what they listen to. Some more than others. 'I like what I like' is an okay ideology for only so long.

IF folks would vary their tastes, a lot of the problems that folks blame on this or that act would not exist to the same degree. Whether you are a Cash Money head or a Rawkus fan.

I look at my CD collection (the hip hop portion at the bottom) and I see Big Pun, Blackstar, Common, Dr. Dre, Eric B & Rakim (need to move those to 'R's), Fiend, JayZ, Master P, Mobb Deep, Notorious BIG, Nas, Outkast, Roots, Snoop, Tribe, Tupac, and Wu Tang to name a few.

The only 'box' that fits loosely around my hip hop CDs is the 'rap' title. It isn't all 'conscious' or 'gansta' or 'bling bling' or 'real' or 'commercial'. There is a mixture.

If I can listen to and enjoy all of these differing acts, why can't another JayZ head pick up and appreciate Common's new CD?

Is it JayZ's fault if the consumer is limited?

In response to Reply # 0

Does Jay have skills on the keyboard? How many words a minute can he type?

And why does Dame Dash profile on the Roc homepage like he's one of the artists? Tell him he's corny.

And speaking of the internet, Jay, you need to get down with okayplayer -- cause the roc homepage is weak.....

And it makes sense for Jay to be down with OkayPlayer, cause he's becoming more and more introspective and soulful... So he might as well become more and more in touch with the zeitgeist and actual individual intelligent listeners like okayplayers....

And I can't wait to cop the live CD.

And just for the record, I bang ROC shit incessantly.

ROC, WU, & OKP. That's all the hip-hop I need....

But when is that ROC M.O.P. jawn dropping? I wanna hear Billy, Fame, and Segal on a track.

And Jay -- what's up with your young philly squad? Sparks and Freeway are decent. But you know how those hollywood fools run the actors through a little bootcamp before they make a war movie? Can Sergant Jay please run his Philly Squad through some type of rap bootcamp before you release any of their material?

And what's up with Roc-A-Wear? Do y'all actually design any of that isht yourself? What's up with the label that says, "ROC-A-WEAR BY COMET APPARREL GROUP." Do you just let some other fools do all the work and then cop the checks? Or do you actually design your gear?

ALoha,

then recently a cat here at okp was saying that they work out in his gym in Cali.

In response to Reply # 0

My post on Activist isn't directed at Sean Carter (the person), cos I don't know who he is or what he's like.

It's directed to Jay-Z (the artist) and the image and values he currently portrays and promotes through his music. Not the Jay-Z he was 5 years ago, not the Jay-Z he'll be in 5 years.

On the same 'pimping icons' thread it's clear to see that there's people who simply hate Jay-Z's music and would have a hard time supporting my criticism if it was directed to an emcee such as Com.

I'm just saying that it's pretty remarkable to see someone whose music mainly promotes materialism, capitalism and hedonism sporting a shirt with Che Guevara. That's not just the case for Jay-Z, but any person in a similar situation.

BUT, at the same time I can still enjoy his music, which just shows how complex stuff like this is, or the hypocrite I am LOL.

This utterly suprises me that artist do not own no type of computer devices, especially a laptop. Maybe i shouldn't judge the artist they must have their own reasons, but damn if you have a twoway your ass should have a laptop,a palm pilot or a gameboy advance.

Like when Fabolous said on 106&Park he was typing his rhymes in his twoway.OKay when your press for time twoway may come in handy but when you have time transfer your rhymes to a laptop.

Also with all the traveling the laptop is a better information device hell you can get directions and all types a stuff to help you as a person who travels alot, let alone a artist.

If any artist in this day in age has no type of computer technology i find that funny.Especially if they're wearing a Platinum chain around their neck.
Pawn that bitch and get a laptop.

I've always had love for Jay-Z. In my opinion, he's
a dope lyricist, and may not be 'conscious'- in that
khufi chewstick kind of way---but he's certainly aware.
If he didn't know how to handle his, he wouldn't
simultaneously be a platinum selling and respected
artist.

And I respect that he is now taking the time to look on
the internet and see exactly what people think about him.
This can help artists gain focus if they're slipping w/o
necessarily losing sight of themselves, or their issues.
---Allowing them to become more progressive and advanced
in their styles.

Online, as is w/life, the main thing is filtering out the
people who are being intentionally negative, from those who
are simply offering constructive criticism.

But it's very no holds barred, because no one is looking
at you face to face, so they're more likely to be honest
and throw your feelings and consideration out the window.

About those artists who won't touch the internet...tsk*tsk*
shame, shame.....some people proactively choose ignorance.

Did u know beanie just signed up for another beef??? Yup, with your old friends "Major Figgas". Young chris came at his old head Spade friday night and Spade said he will be on the "Come up" this friday (Spade tried to son Free live on the air on some boss type shit "Yeah put Free on"). I'm just guessing that your name will come up because you did just sign 'Pd crack' didnt u? Cause he came at Spade and Dutch neck like the war was on and sparks was hyping it the whole time "My man got something to say, He's only 17". Anyway, somehow the shit will get back to you cause i know at the very least Gilly will say something about you or the label.

So, in all that. Do u regret signing Beanie???? He might be your downfall. I'm from philly so i'm glad u signed him cause it definitely opened the door for to many artist to name but for you i dont think it was the best move.

I'm sorry I gotta say it. This is BS. Maybye Im missin the point but let me say this. Why do we go to these great lengths to accept this 1 cat? Well because hes on top. Its like everyone is in a rush to prove that despite their musical standards JZ is really like this & that. Nothing like he portrays on record. Why instead of people jockin him & going to his level of champagne & paltinum he comes to our level. I dont need to hear how he's a backpacker at heart & that he really wants to work wit Primo but when his albums come out they are second rate & he still does what will sell.

My thing is put ya money were ya mouth is. Youre a "backpacker" well ya stable of artists are all wanna be you'se. Then you have the lazy lyrics. He can do much better. I just look at it diffrent I guess but why do we have to justify ourselvs to him in the name of diversity? Why does the cat who has everything yet is doing nothing to promote the kind of hip hop he so cvalled loves invited to Okayplayer. I don't see him begging to spit wit any okay artist.

Thats how I feel. I actually like JZ, own several of his albums & end up defending him more than I should to hardcore heads but come on this is ridiculous.

I think you bring up a good point. If Jay wasn't a platinum selling artist would we really be offering him a full-fledged embrace like this? A lot of okayplayers are all star struck right now and suddenly the 'backpacker' and 'conscious' mentality that pervades the boards fades away. Suddenly we feel validated because Jay is interested, eff that. I feel like okayplayer headz/artists have been closer to the truth through their words and actions than the Roc, Jay, etc...so if he wants to expand his mind that's sick, but I otherwise go record another song with Jermaine Dupri or Juvenile.

Jay- I love you though hehe, Blueprint is illlll (as is Reasonable Doubt and Vol. 3, my personal favs). Your flow is ridiculous, but i'm more impressed with someone who tries to work for the common good.

Demand more from your artists! You CAN, there are a lot of em out there.

<A lot of okayplayers are all star struck right now and suddenly the 'backpacker' and 'conscious' mentality that pervades the boards fades away. Suddenly we feel validated because Jay is interested, eff that.>

Its like you see a chick & shes attractive but real stuck up, here daddy is rich plus she only likes older cats. Shes in your class but neva pays you no mind at all-basically ignores you. Now time passes, you grow a couple inches, & became the star PF on the basketball team. You not only are the leading scorer but you are able to do what no one else in the league has ever done-average a triple double for the season. Now this chick wants to meet you...now shes interested. But youve got a girl heck a coupleof em & youre happy. Sure by puttin you on your team youd gain more props from the fellas & a little more noteriaty "dog you pulled the flyest girl" but whats the point. She only holled cuz she sees a benefit for her. It raises her status amongthe chickenheads as well. What do you do?

I know what I'd do cuz Ive done it, you dont have to dog her, shes still fly as ever dont front but I'm cool. When she sends her flunkee chickenhead to give you her number politly turn it down.

Believe me, Jay Z is a businesman. Every move he has made from his inception to to the game has been calculated. He entered the game with Mary J Blige on a single. What unknown artist has enough & money & clout to pull Mary? Then he plays the this is my last album bit after Vol 3. We feel for it. He signs (reportedly)Cormega & MOP to keep the heat off him from those that question his street cred(you also cant minamalize the Queens connection). Now he confides in Quest that he is secretly a backpacker & that he has an interest in Okayplayer.Againwe fall for it. Its business to him, hes interested cuz its succcesfull allready. I hope Ques you at least read this.
What is he gonna bring to the table besides his fans? I cant see his fans go madd over okayartists like okayfans go mad over him.

Okayplayer lets not get okaydoked!

What about "Hawaiian Sophie," cameos with Original Flavor, "Show and Prove" with Big Daddy Kane, "Time to Build" with Mic Geronimo, "Da Graveyard" with Big L, "I Can't Get With That," "In My Lifetime" etc. Don't act like homey just appeared outta nowhere with "Can't Knock the Hustle." He put in work.

Then

He actually talked about the retirement thing after "Reasonable Doubt."

He signs (reportedly)Cormega &

His street cred is pretty secure as far as I can tell. The Cormega/MOP signings are just about recruiting new talent. What would you have him do, sign nobody? Clearly, Beanie and Bleek aren't getting the job done right now.

But other than that, can't fault your skepticism.

I would debate on that but it would probally be useless. MANHOODLUM & I discuss the dope slinga turned rapper-"I was neva into rap I was hustlin but one day I was messin around wit my boys & spit this freestyle ,well it ended up in the hands of Pete Rock & he played it & the next thing you know Puffy called me" attitude. Just cuz dude appeared on a couple a cameos dont mean he was hungry.

How soon you forget hes a backpacker right? Where the take a chance on a dude thats "underground"(I use that term against my better judgement). Heck he can support Bleeks non-money makin butt for 2 albums he def canafford to take a few chances.

That's not Jay's attitude though. He paid dues before becoming big time, simple as that... basically refuting your original claim that he dropped out of the sky with a Mary J. collabo. NY heads knew who the eff he was before that. I've always heard him say that he has a God-given talent to rap and that he wanted to use that. Never heard him say "I was never into rap."

Cormega is definitely a chance. He got dropped from Def Jam and has sold a decent number independently (mostly in NY) but he has no proven sellability. MOP has failed on Relativity and failed on Loud. That's a chance too.

Besides, are these signings even confirmed?

And what would you consider taking a chance? Bleek was nobody. Sigel was nobody. Those weren't chances?

I wholeheartedly disagree cuz he said the reason he didnt pursue it for a while after "Sophie" was because of his other dealings. I never said he dropped out of the sky wit Mary. Like you say NY new who he was & so did the heads but to do a debut album wit Mary by an independant rap artist is unprecendented. That was a def power move. He gets props.

About the whole God given talent thing maybye thats why he keeps useing that "memorize rhymes in his head" style. Thats lazy man! I would like to see a full concentrated effort writen effort by him were he dosnt do 9 songs within a 4 day period. Im sure it would be incredible.

And what would you consider taking a chance? Bleek was nobody.

Bleek was spiting in the wind blindfolded in the middle of Chicago dureing a tornado. Its coming back to smack him

Sigel was nobody.

Beanie was on Adrenaline about to be signed to by the Roots-or so Quest said. Thats when Jay snatched him up.

man, i think that "blueprint", thus far, is his best, lyricwise----i may not like the beats on every cut, but the lyrics, imo, were never, ever lacking or "lazy"---matter of fact, his skills have improved even more-if you can really just sit down and listen to the whole album, word for word......the tightness in the lyrics were consistent throughout the whole album...choice of words even on down to delivery-sometimes just the way he phrases.........and it ain't like he's rhyming about anything different-ol' dude is rappin about the same subjects that he's been rappin about for years-but this time, it's a fresher approach---that's what makes it a tight album to me-----but what i'd like to hear is a whole jay-z album where j just says "awww, eff it---i'm gonna do whatever the hell i wanna do", and hear the results.......i have a feeling that's gonna happen somewhere down the line, though

and reasonable doubt was quite tight lyricwise.....but if you wanna talk about beats, though....reasonable also had it's share of lackluster material

my thoughts are that...yeah, his rhymin skills have improved since "reasonable..."---i think a lot of us who are anti-mainstream jay-z-ish get locked into that whole "ain't-nothin-been-hittin-since-reasonable-doubt" thing-all i'm sayin is have an open ear-throw out the biased views-and just sit back and listen to "blueprint", lyrics and all, without any preconceptions, man----and like i said...no, the beats may not all be to your liking (i feel the same), BUT, i do feel that jay-z lyrically came with it on this album--and i'd say that about 5 or 6 of the cuts are tight to me, including the beats

but that's just my opinion.........

I dont think i'd put myself in the category of those who think Jay hasnt had anything iLL since RD...however, i dont think the lyrics on 22 Two's, Can I live, Friend of Foe, and Regrets have been matched since then. however....i do know Jay has come with it Lyrically on every album (exception dynasty which was blah)...i dont know...i'll listen to Blueprint again without the preconceived notions like you say...we'll see what happens

i read this interview with the president of the "Criterion Collection" the DVD licenser.

he was basically saying, he caught alot of flack from the Criterion hard rocks when he decided to include "Armageddon" in the collection. from his stance, he was building a more rounded collective of films, each representing an classic of it's kind ("Armageddon" being a very specific, very current, modern brand of adrenal entertainment that Criterion hadn't really covered). As long as their presentation stood the test of time.

basically, this is a longwinded way to say, welcome jay z....

How crazy would that be. I would love to see a roots/jay z collabo, but hell everyone knows that the roots aren't happy with MCA, would it ever be possible that Jay Z could sign them if they get out of the mca contract? That would make some news in the biz for sure. Damn. Jay would be entering new territory with the roots on board and if all went well would give the roots the proper push to have a chance to blow up. Just dreaming but damn that would be something.

Let's not dispute this. Each has something the other could benefit from. This deal could get done in St. Barts over a game of guts, easy. Jay could get the R&B acts that work, Motive could get the Marketing muscle that has made Jay's releases work. Clue screaming on Roots promos, Beanie on Jag remixes, Rell doing songs w/ the Jazzies!! . Seriously, this could be some dreamworks shit.

okay okay, first off, i do like Jay-z. he has been pretty consistent, and will probably be the rapper of my time, but i don't see him fitting in as an okayartist. Isn't the whole "mission statement" of okp "a group of like minded artists...?" let's go down the list of okayartists:
the roots
common
d'angelo
talib and hi-tek
the jazzies
dilated peoples

all of the artist's here i guess can be considered "avant garde", black power, and some, not all as you have corrected us before, "concious mcs." adding jay just doesn't work out. Adding a dude with a whole different style of rhyming, living, and working, doesn't seem like it goes along w/ what okp stands for. on one hand you have struggling, no offense, artists like the jazzies trying to get some support from their label, some air play, and some acceptence from the general public, and then you have Jay walking in here stepping out of his $200000+ bentley, which just picked him up from his hilicopter's landing pad, which just picked him up at the airport's tarmac where his private jet touched down. As much as i respect jay, and love listening to his music, i don't think he fits in here. kinda like a rich kid, whose parents just went bankrupt, going to a poor school.

People who whine about a thing becoming successful are just jealous. It all depends on quality and intent. If something retains its integrity and quality, people shouldn't mind if it becomes popular. Exploiting a style just because it is popular sucks, and any artist, graffiti or otherwise, shouldn't participate in a project unless it's proponents desire to understand and perpetuate the culture and perspective from which the artist comes. I have this unrealistic notion that exposure for graffiti is positive through any channel that gives positive representation, which may or may not be fashion. I think expanding acceptance of graffiti expands freedom of speech and genuinely helps democratize things for the individual in this spectator democracy. There's a mission statement on this site? What the fuck is it a interoffice memo?

avant garde? black power? LOL I mean theyre BLACK.

Who said Jay-Z is coming to OKP first off? Second off... I mean shit OKP is a community. A community funded, mind you, by the artists that decide they would like to join. Quest hands out no free passes to have OK Wizards Dan & Spec build sites for these cats. If Jay wanted to join... let him... obviously on the contribution side of things, he'd be in a higher tax bracket then say the Jazzies, but other then that, more power to him.

Once again... I dont see it happening... If he decided to surf the boards on the regular but on the low though (shhhh...) then its all good. But then again... I dont even know WHY I dont see it happening... I guess just a couple of days ago it would have been impossible to even fathom it...

Honestly if I woke up tomorrow and found that there was a new member to the "Artists" page, I wouldnt care if that artist was JayZ or the fuckin Brady Bunch. I dont come to the site for the artists as much anymore.... I mean it doesnt mean Im not a fan of them. I am. However I cant really recall the last time I checked out one of the artist sites. Well actually I can... but I can name the last three times... 1.) Recently when I went to quest's corner to read the Ghost review. 2.)Common's site to read BKyle's diary. 3.)D'Angelo site reading Quest's tour diaries. And thats pretty much it... Other then that its the boards. And seeing as the boards are the only thing that Jay will likely interact with, how can you say he doesnt fit in? I mean how do all of US as posters on this site fit in with one another? If we limited membership to the boards based on any given characteristic we would wipe out at least 50% of the members.

Welcome to Detroit with Jigga lacing on it? TFA with Jigga. I want some more shit like "A million and one questions". Thank God the blueprint's beats were getting closer to this or I wouldn't have been able to stomach any more half assed Hova. I like the halfassed Hova, but I respect and love hearin the early Jay more.
In my opinion, as large as Jay is, he could seriously help to bring back music to where it should be if he were to steer in that direction.

Jigga rapping on clones!!!!!!!!!! I could only imagine.

(here's where I speak my mind, y'all...)

1) Now that it's known that Jay-Z has read this shit ONCE, will the scathing criticisms some of us have lobbed at him cease?

2) Will the legions of ROCAteers over at his site now flock over here once word gets out that he's down with OKP?

3) Is he willing to go a step further and make moves with these artists he secretly digs?

4) How long until this shit gets archived? Better yet, how long until this post dies?

5) And lastly, and this is for Sir Jigga Jig himself... Can I borrow a dollar?

Get a job.

Hov-
why don't you include more liner notes on your next album. Straight up, that was one of my favorite parts of Vol.2 - when you wrote a little sumpthin 'bout every track. I always read the credits and thank you's front to back. You could wax poetic on it if you want, or just talk about each song. Either way it'd add an ill element to your cd. Also, bootleggers don't copy the notes...

another rant- how come your CD cost like $20! Straight up, wtf? I know cd's are expensive to make, I've worked in the industry before, but ish is a little pricey. Naturally I copped it, but when I broke my blueprint I couldn't afford to buy another. Of course, if it was a Def Jam descision, I understand. Universal/Vivendi is a public company...blah..blah. Hey, BTW, that would make you labelmates with quest anyway, huh? (DJam is UMG, MCA is UMG)

Also, just curious, how'd you meet Damon?

...I peeped you at "Give back take back at the apollo last friday. Shit was ill, for real. but i'm sure you already know...

"What's the difference between a 4.2 and a 4.6? about 30-40 grand co*ksucker- now beat it!" -vol.1

that hasnt already been said..in defense or opposition...but since this is one of those classic posts that cats will be bragging about, i'll put my Hancock on it too....

aight, I stopped listenin to Jay bout 2 albums ago..no, really at dynasty, but no cuz of what he was doing, moreso because of what i wanted from my music...i think its a matter of preference.ive heard dynasty (that was the first jay album i didnt purchase)..and to me it was horrible...ive heard blueprint, and everything about it being a return to reasonable doubt (its not) and im not overly impressed...its decent, but i'd give it a 3 or 3.5 out of 5....that said, i still think he's probably a cool dude (especially seein how wide-eyed he was for this internet experience according to ?uest)...he's got some of the most memorable one liners i can think of (and i come with doo-rags to your so-called awards/T-shirt with my chain out like fuck yall all!!)..i dont think he's catering, i think he's doin what he pleases...and at the end of the day, its Jay he's gotta face in the mirror, so thats all he has to worry about.

damn yo...did i just defend Jay z...even i can grow i guess

I fuck with Hova for many reasons.
I wanna note that during the "Aint No Nigga" dayz I was a hater.
I refused 2 listen 2 Reasonable Doubt, just cuz e'ry body else I knew was listening to it. (Besides, Rap-A-Lot was crankin classics back then.) Then Big passed, and while I heard that Brooklyn's Finest was dope, I never got the chance to hear Jay flow (non-radio) until 'I Love the Dough' on Life After Death. I couldnt believe it! He flowed with Big and I mean, bar for bar, pun for pun. I know it's far from either's best work, but the mastery of both their flows made me a believer on Jigga. Hell, if the lyrical Shakespeare that was Biggie could vibe with you, then I better too His arrogance withstanding (to all the broke bammas, if u were under 30 livin the life of a millionaire you'd be jah arrogant too), lyrically I can see the geek in him. If u listen to a Jigga record and catch every pun, u know the man's intelligent. After I got his music (I bought Reasonable, Streets is Watchin, and the Blueprint- that satiated my Hova need), and watched that damn CLASSIC streets iz watching video (him + Dame waxin Seinfeldian humor was pure fire)- I was officially the fan.

Since the man has been so dissected as of late, I peeped the business moves. The Industry on a business level is somthin I'm tryin to break into so I watch those on top. I think acquiring MOP was genius. I know the first track they do with Sigel will be pumped thru the DC Streets till the summer. I think Christion shoulda been givin another album (:-)) to grow. And Jigga introducin yankees to UGK and Scarface is another feat that gets him respect in my eyes. As I noted b4, when he first dropped, I thought he was gonna be passed Big's crown on a default move. Years later, I note how wrong I was, how much the man deserves the title, and how he really is the nerdy god MC. And ?uest. I aint gonna get into my thoughts on ?uest, he like my damn idol and I aint never heard him speak That's for another post. I do think the Roots should write a book (I could help em!) like concert reactions, on the road melee, work ethic, etc. That's a literary hit, call it Diary of a Mad Band. Hell, I'd buy it. Ok, I aint nobody, I'll be quiet now. Peace

That is probably posted too late to be noticed, oh well. I still get a chuckle from it.

I'm guessing it was sometime in '95, memories are hazy in my old age. Big Jaz was a guest on our humble radio show on WMUC at the University of Maryland (Soul Controllers represent). He was promoting his new record, I believe it was Foundation. Damn I hope I still have that 12-inch.

After chopping it up with us and spitting a few bars, he directed our attention to a mild mannered cat who rolled into the studio with him but was hanging in the back and not saying a word.

This mute young fellow was an mc about to drop by the name of Jay-Z . I remember hearing In My Lifetime, Dead Presidents and 22 Twos. After a bit of good natured razzing from us about his tour-de-force cameo on Hawaiian Sophie, he spoke his piece humbly while Jaz bigged him up mightily.

It's always the quiet ones.
