I'll see it eventually, but there is absolutely no reason for it to be over 90 minutes long (it's 135).

As someone who often gets restless at action movies that don't know when to say when, I thought this one was very well plotted out and executed.

It respected the many versions of the source material, but still had it's own unique twist.

And the visuals are SICK.
I kept expecting things in the background to be all cartoony, but they had this bugged photorealism to them...
Like regular everyday things you'd see, but the colors just pumped up and tweaked so much that it looks like animation.

I didn't even notice that this is a pretty long flick with all the eye candy to take it.

Also... I noticed that at some point they just stopped trying to get that G rating. It's like a hard PG or tame PG-13.

...

Man... I'm still trying to process everything.

This flick is gonna sell so many HDTVs this Christmas, yo... LOL

Speed Racer' review
Colorful update on '60s anime series feels like deja vu (Slow zones the only glitches in the matrix)

By Michael Phillips | Tribune critic
7:45 AM CDT, May 9, 2008

"Speed Racer" bemoans corporately financed entertainment for the masses while serving as a fine example thereof. So as big, blaring blockbusters go, it's a bit of a hypocrite. It is also self-congratulatory. When Susan Sarandon's Mom Racer (think Jane Jetson without the pre-feminist itch to shop) tells her son, Speed, played by Emile Hirsch, that what he does may be machine-driven but it's "art" that "takes my breath away," the whap-whap-whap you hear isn't a blown tire, it's brothers Andy and Larry Wachowski patting themselves on the back.

But "Speed Racer" doesn't look like any other movie. At its best, it's buoyant pop entertainment focused on three things: speed, racing and retina-splitting oceans of digitally captured color. The Wachowskis' first project as writers-directors since their "Matrix" trilogy resembles the aftermath of a big box of Dots flung at the world's largest set of Fiesta dinnerware. The palette makes Warren Beatty's "Dick Tracy" look like "Stranger Than Paradise."

Aired on Japanese television in 1967 and, a few months later, dubbed into English for eager, crash-crazy American tots, "Speed Racer" ("Mach Go-Go-Go" in Japanese) came from the world of comic books. The Wachowskis respect the dynamism of the original drawings, while carving out their own middle ground between computer animation and live action. They respect also the themes of honor, dishonor, family loyalty and Visigoth-inspired barbarism behind the wheel.

The TV show's appeal was pretty simple. As the theme song exhorted its hero to "go, Speed Racer, go, Speed Racer, go, Speed Racer, go," millions of kids watched one of Speed's anonymous rivals crash through a guardrail and (presumably) perish in a ball of flame. Fiery fatality backed by a peppy major-chord theme: yeah!

In the Wachowskis' film, a crash impact immerses the unfortunate driver in a foamlike substance, bouncing him like a rubber ball out of harm's way. Then, periodically, a big ball of plot rolls onto the track to take its place. The screenplay pits Speed against the conniving head of Royalton Industries, who is trying to lure the boy-man with the Elvis hair onto Royalton's all-star racing team. The big races, Speed learns, have been fixed by Royalton (Roger Allam) and his cronies.

Royalton's trying to engineer the stock fortunes of two competing Japanese firms. Younger viewers may wonder what's at stake in these scenes. Also, the welter of flashbacks relating to the disgrace and apparent death of Speed's racer brother, Rex, gets a little thick. ( Matthew Fox plays Racer X, who may be Rex in do-gooder disguise.) "Dad, can I have your notebook and pen a second?" whispered my 7-year-old son at one point early on. His comment: "THIS MOVIE MAKES NO SENSE." But 20 minutes and one big race later, he was fully engrossed.

The movie starts and ends beautifully, with two nighttime races bookending the rest. The deadly cross-country rally in between has its brainless pleasures as well. The rhythms of the action sequences, edited by Zach Staenberg and Roger Barton with a maniacal edge, are frantic but not quite incoherent, which these days is saying something. A typical 10-second race sequence begins with an aerial perspective of a mountaintop road; then, without conventional cuts, we're inside the cockpit with Speed, and then, zwooop, we're whisked inside Trixie's cockpit a few hundred yards behind him, then, zwooop, back for a close-up of Speed. Such illusions of fluidity take the computer-generated sting out of the proceedings.

Hacking their way through exposition, the Wachowskis' skills haven't improved much since those Oracle scenes in their first "Matrix" picture. "Speed, before you go," says John Goodman's gruff Pops Racer, the owner of the family racing business, "I'd like to say a few things." What seems like several hours later, Hirsch's Speed catches the rest of his family listening to his heart-to-heart. "You were listening the whole time?" he asks. He may as well have added: "I mean, that was a lot of unnecessary dialogue!"

The Wachowskis leave it to a strong cast of earnest, gently playful actors to untangle such thickets. The aggressively multinational ensemble of "Speed Racer," featuring everyone from Korean vocalist Rain as one of Speed's rivals to Narges Rashidi as "Persian Announcer," recalls '60s vehicles such as "Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies." And while Christina Ricci may not have much to do as Trixie, she's second to none when it comes to a skeptical arch of her left eyebrow, accompanied by composer Michael Giacchino's tingggg on the triangle.

Straight out of the TV series, not to mention such later time-wasters as "Wacky Races," the gimmicky weaponryspear hooks, oil slicks, buzz sawshasn't changed since the old days. Only the technology has changed. The film runs an overgenerous two hours and 15 minutes, and it sags in its midsection. But of course Boomers can relate to that. Not everybody can create a freshly conceived visual universe. The Wachowskis can.

I mean, it's a kid's movie, first and foremost. I think that's what critics aren't liking about it. From the color scheme to the concept of the action to the dialogue, it's a film for kids and for adults who want to feel like kids.

But I thought it was great. If you liked the original series, you should LOVE this flick. The casting of every single role is absolutely flawless. I especially liked Matthew Fox (who shows signs that maybe he can springboard out of Lost into a successful movie career) and John Goodman.

And I really liked the color palate too. It's a very different big-budget action flick, really ballsy in a way. There was a very safe way to make a Speed Racer film, and instead we get what is clearly a labor of love by the Wachowskis. It has more heart in it than in every other Wachowski movie combined, really.

I hope it doesn't flop, that it gives directors to take chances and make bold decisions on these types of summer flicks.

It was okay to me. If felt a little long, particularly when Speed kept having these touching moments with different members of the cast. After all the fast racing, these scenes really stood out (not in a good way)and annoyed me.

And even then, some nostalgic older men think the vision is too weird, and it's too long for many younger boys.

I think the very reason it was so unique was the same reason why it failed. You shouldn't give filmmakers 120 million for a labor-of-love vision aimed at boys ages 8-12. You ain't gonna get that dough back.

that lil kid playing speed was annoying to me.

Just watched it...that movie is a lot of fun...crazy special effects and the colors make Amelie look sepia-toned. Great fun kids movie that is sure to become a cult film. Reminded me of Willy Wonka for the 2000's, if you ignore the film Willy Wonka from a couple years ago, ha ha.

I guess you can say the reviews got to me at the time of release, but I just finished it. Great all around. The Wachowski did a great job. I think this is the best movie from them, since Matrix. I advise everyone to watch it, even if you never watched the original series, which I didn't.

I'm talking Cassie live in concert horrible here.

What were they trying to do with this film? I ask because it was a failure on every level. It reminded me over Robert Rodriguez and his crappy Spy Kids trilogy visually and the story was way too convoluted. Too much cutesy, campy, kitsch dayglo bullshit for me to stomach.

The trailer made me wanna throw up from jump because everything looked fake and plastic...I HATE that. I gave the film the benefit of the doubt but I just hated it more and more. I wish it would've gone a different way because it was just too much CGI and green screen stuff for me to take. When Sin City and 300 did it, it worked. With Speed Racer it gave me a headache.

I've been flipping between this and the shitty Laker game, and have continued to be entertained by it

It's colorful, the performances are spot-on and completely in the high-pitched spirit of the material, and the story's easy to follow

I agree with jigga in that I wish I had peeped it in IMAX when it was out

But it comes nowhere near to being as bad as people made it out to be. On a five-star scale, I'd give 2.5 or 3. Visually, Speed Racer was one of the better movies that year just off all that color and movement.

That being said, I wish people would stop this trend of reading box office numbers as if they were reviews. A lot of people crucified Speed Racer because it was such a flop. Even I was guilty at the outset until I finally caught it on HBO.

Probably because the visuals are soooooooooo OTT, the material is so campy and the performances are so sincere. I think my eyes would have stopped working if I saw in in IMAX. Hell, on Blu Ray I need to take a break after watching it.

But it definitely is much, much , much better than people give it credit for.

Irreversibly

The way it was received and shitted on changed how
I look at Hollywood films

Don't get me wrong

I was ALWAYS cynical about "big" movies

But motherfucking Indiana Jones and Back 2 the Future
was making paper dog

But now I can't watch big movies, have no desire

I be reading weird graphic novels and watching documentaries

The modern public is so poorly equipped to handle an actual
good story that it pains me...I get a headache every time I
see a trailer for a "blockbuster"

Because this movie wasn't just "good"

It was phenomenal, one of the most beautiful films ever made

And hipster ass reviewers completely destroyed it

Damn shame

The CineFex issues that talk about them might be fun, but trying to watch them as "movies" was not, for some of us.

There's no hate on the directors - their movies just stink AS MOVIES, to some (to most?)

The love for them here are like the posts in The Lesson that proclaim that Mos Def is just getting better every release (with The New Danger as his best) and that Phife > Q-Tip.

I think the Wachoski's problems is that they need a hundred million dollars to make a movie and there may not be enough people who think the "beauty" is worth the $14 to go see.

I don't.

just focusing on the visuals, and it's easier to do that than nearly any other movie i've seen, the movie is highly entertaining. but the story itself is much better than i expected. and that opening sequence where he slows up so he doesn't beat his brother's record? seriously brought tears to my eyes.

But they rarely stick the landing. Bound, without any special effects, is a better movie than anything they've made after The Matrix.

The only reason those first movies worked was that those movies had great scripts and in the case of the first Matrix movie, they had worked on the idea for that movie for over eight years. They had worked out all of the details and the bells and whistles to pull those movies off.

Every other movie has been a muddied mix of eye candy and plot lines that are impossible to follow, either because of their complicated nature or lack of compelling interest.

Grand, ambitious ideas don't translate for modern day audiences. They really ought to have been born 10 years earlier, because studios would spend money on crazy ideas for the sake for art. Now, not so much.
