Decap was good.

Damon was a cop version of Will Hunting.

Jack was a witty old slickster.

Nice little crime storyline.

Not memorable at all overall.

Nah, joking, I hear you.

'Goodfellas' was an actual good movie though.

'The Departed' was bland. 20 years ago, that story woulda
been sitting in Scorcese's trash bin.

In 2007, when people forgot how to write crime stories,
its a big hit.

All of which are terrible, but feature "slick"
casts. 'The Departed is bit better, but not much.

Y'all just have a hard time talking bad about
Scorcese.

One thing -- Scorcese does not make trainwrecks the way
Spielberg them do. Scorcese DOES, however, make LOTS of
MEDIOCRE movies that the praised for being great. I been
noticed that.

All yall talking about cast:

Good casts only play out in good MOVIES.

If the movie is mediocre, I don't care about the cast.

I mean, Marky Mark...that nigga was comic relief. That's
all. He didn't do shit but bark and talk shit the whole
movie. That's it. I almost felt like I was watching
'The Naked Gun' everytime I seen him on screen, because he
was so fucking contrived, it felt like slapstick comedy.

And Jack Nicholson basically played himself.

Oh, and the psychiatrist love interest bullshit was
very, very, meh.

Like what? I admit not all his movies were great, but what other mediocre ones does he have? I can only think of two right off hand, next to the Departed: After Hours and Kundun. He has way more great films.

Hells no. I actually can't think of one other movie where his role is similar to the one in The Departed.

>Oh, and the psychiatrist love interest bullshit was
>very, very, meh.

Yes. Obviously the point to it was to show how another person (the psychiatrist) was out there living a double life fucking Damon and Dicapprio, and even though they were both living double lives they didn't know that someone else was doing the same thing to them emotionally. That's a good idea. But the execution of it was really forgettable, almost to the point where it seemed thrown in half-heartedly, since the love story doesn't seem to go anywhere.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other mediocre films by Scorsese (though I wouldn't say Departed was mediocre, just overrated.) Name names already.

EDIT: Just thought of Last Temptation of Christ, which IMO was pretty disappointing.

So to compare it to Oceans 11 or even Naked Gun isn't really that big of a knock.

I mean all of these films can fit squarely into the category of 'fun crime flicks'. Some sillier than others, sure. But The Departed is more or less a comedy as far as I'm concerned. And everybody who was in the theater with me would probably agree. That shit got more laughs than Knocked Up.

And this is exactly what makes The Departed great. It's fun, the cast is great, and it's really fucking well made. There are some really stupid cop movie cliches in the film, but there's some fairly brilliant nuances tossed in there that set it apart from the herd. The love interest thing, I would agree feels underdeveloped and a bit shoehorned. On the other hand, it contributes to the symmetry of the movie as well as its rampant sexual subtext. So I have trouble seeing it as a fault. I dunno, admittedly, I have such a good time watching this movie, I have trouble seeing any fault in it.

The common denominator I see in what little criticism this movie gets is from people who were expecting some sort of "return to form" from Scorsese. Which it was, just not in the brooding, high-falutin' no plot havin' character study sense that some were wanting.

Yes, it is.

The laziest defense of a movie, one that I get too often,
is the "you took it too seriously" bullshit. Its nothing more
than a way for someone to pardon the dumbass bullshit in a given
film. You point out dumb shit, and people say:

"Aw...man, you're focusing on the wrong stuff!
Its just a fun movie!"

"Fun movie" does NOT = an excuse to have cliche, contrived
interactions, especially when the rest of the goddamn movie
is supposed to be somewhat realistic. Its not fucking Star
Wars.

It takes place in Boston, and shit, like, today or something.

Not Mars in 3011.

Just because 'The Departed' was funny does not mean its a
fucking slapstick comedy. It was a crime story, with some
funny dialogue and one liners.

It was not Oceans 11. It was not the Naked Gun.

Don't use that excuse to pardon the lame, sloppy storyline
and all the non-Decap boring characters.

>I mean all of these films can fit squarely into the category
>of 'fun crime flicks'.

Jesus Christ.

Just a way for you to pardon the dumb shit in 'The Departed'.

That's all it is.

You can use your dumbass excuse to pardon ANYTHING in ANY movie,
really. You can always say:

"C'mon! Stop nit-picking! Its just a movie!"

Bullshit.

If you can't admit that 'The Departed' was supposed to be
way, way, way, way, way, way, way, more serious than
Oceans 11 than you're just being a coward.

>And this is exactly what makes The Departed great. It's fun,
>the cast is great, and it's really fucking well made. There
>are some really stupid cop movie cliches in the film, but
>there's some fairly brilliant nuances tossed in there that set
>it apart from the herd.

What "nuances?"

The love interest thing, I would agree
>feels underdeveloped and a bit shoehorned. On the other hand,
>it contributes to the symmetry of the movie as well as its
>rampant sexual subtext.

What the fuck are you talking about?

"sexual subtext?"

Now I remember why I don't post in PTP. You guys love to
make yourselves feel smart with your over-analysis.

There was some drugs, and fucking in the movie.

Whoopdeedamndoo.

That has nothing to do with the love interest being irrelevant,
uninteresting, unnecessary, and bland.

Stop making excuses. She was boring, and her scenes sucked.

So I have trouble seeing it as a
>fault. I dunno, admittedly, I have such a good time watching
>this movie, I have trouble seeing any fault in it.

That's because you are good at making excuses and lying to your
self so that the movie has no flaws.

>The common denominator I see in what little criticism this
>movie gets is from people who were expecting some sort of
>"return to form" from Scorsese. Which it was, just not in the
>brooding, high-falutin' no plot havin' character study sense
>that some were wanting.

Uh. Not my criticism at all.

I put it in my DVD player, and watched the goddamn movie and
it wasn't that good.

That's actually my criticism, and that's the one you are
getting from most of the people who agree with me here.

I'm not artsy like that.

I just thought the fucking movie was bland.

Not saying that at all. It is a fun movie. But it's not JUST a fun movie, if you get me.

I'll skip a lot of the other stuff you said as it contains no reason nor relevance to anything whatsoever.

>Don't use that excuse to pardon the lame, sloppy storyline

I thought you said it was a "Nice little crime storyline" in your original post? What was sloppy about it? I thought the plot structure was actually one of the better things going for it.

>If you can't admit that 'The Departed' was supposed to be

I can't admit it because I don't think it's true.

Well, there's a ton of it. There's this whole thing with morality/fertility, fathers/sons, double lives, etc. etc.... there's also the possibility that Matt Damon's character was a repressed homosexual who compensated with this contrived 'tough guy' routine. I can understand why you might have chosen not to catch *that* one, though.

Anyway, watch the movie again, or go check out the big ol' Departed post from way back if you're interested in some of the subtleties (though not all that subtle) of the flick. There really is a good bit going on below the surface, but of course if you ignore that stuff the film can be just as enjoyable.

>Now I remember why I don't post in PTP. You guys love to

Oh you were on drugs? Well that explains everything.

>Stop making excuses. She was boring, and her scenes sucked.

She confronted Matt Damon about his impotence while eating a banana. That was a good scene.

But, like I said, she wasn't my favorite part of the movie, nor a part that I'd spend too much energy on defending. But the character/subplot did contribute to the overall film.

I would recommend maybe watching it again, not high this time, and seeing how you like it then.

This is what I mean when I say 'Pulp Fiction' ruined
modern film.

I'll hold back for now.

No, because movies are supposed to be made to be WATCHED
not discussed over coffee for months after the fact. Again-
the Pulp Fiction generation seems to miss this, and y'all
like to overanalyze films to make yourself seem deep and
smart.

Films used to be dope because EVERYTHING including SUBTEXT
was 100% OBVIOUS. Take Goodfellas -- lots of subtext. No artsy
fartsy bullshit. Just DIRECT storytelling. That's the way its
posed to be done.

If it wasn't 100% apparent in the first viewing, then its
an irrelevant detail. All that "under the surface" is just a way
to make a film seem "deeper"....its a goddamn crime story with
some witty characters. Its not a commentary on the Boxer Rebellion
or a post-structuralist account of Susan B. Anthony.

Didn't see PF until it had been out on video for years. Never once discussed it over lattes. Whatever alleged 'impact' it had on the masses is lost on me. I liked it, and I leave it at that.

I'm not sure why depth is exclusive to period pieces in your mind. I'm not sure why "deeper" is in quotation marks. I'm not sure why, given your point of view, you didn't find The Departed's irreverence a little more appealing.

But we do agree on one thing: This is boring.

I think it's overly harsh to say C-. I also think it's fair to ask what your F, C, and A+ is, so we all know what you're standards are.

I think it deserves an A.

Think back to the way, say, the first hour is cut. The past develops with the present. It's quick, tight--the film rushes you. But what makes it brilliant is the juxtaposition. Why has he jumped from the past to the present now? Now why has he gone back? Like other people have said, you catch smaller emotional and plot arcs with repeat viewings, and end up seeing how carefully (and I think successfully) DiCaprio's character is crafted. And in the the end that what makes him meaningful and resonant. I think the film is built on the first hour or so and, it doesn't coast, but it has enough momentum from that first hour to blast to the finish.

Marky Mark may be a bit too funny for his own good, but it's almost like the Jesus effect in Big Lebowski. An essentially minor character has only quality lines. Like it's all golden. I'm not saying that Marky is Jesus, but maybe you can see that good line after good line will eventually push someone over the top. Which taints it a bit, but I still think the character is great cinema.

I do agree that Jack is a bit hammy. And the love story is brief (and her accent comes and goes like the bus). But in my opinion the film is about DiCaprio. The characters, the setting, the dialog--it's all a buttress for getting inside Leo's head. Which it does a fantastic job of doing.

Clown away at me, but I also got a lot out of the new Harry Potter book from watching the Departed.

***spoiler***

Man, Severus is basically the same character as DiCaprio. I finished the book and then all of the sudden Severus came alive. Rowling did an ok job with his little flashbacks, but you want to understand Severus's pain, longing, his nerves of steel, feelings of alienation. I think the Departed accidentally fleshes out Severus Snape, and inadvertently turned JK Rowling into an author with real depth. Because we can really see what one of her hidden but lynchpin characters were really about.

Regardless, I still think the Departed was fucking ace.

I'm traumatized by this post, seriously, and don't
think I'll recover for a few months.

This ninja just said Marky Mark is like the Jesus effect
from the Big Lebowski and compared 'The Departed'
to Harry Potter and was dead serious.

half the shit that was funny in that flick wasn't meant to be funny, imo.

Put it like this: The original had almost the exact same plot and kept my ass riveted to the screen.

Departed ended up being slapstick.

Matt Damon was by far the blandest damn villain i've ever seen in a movie, Jack Nicholson played Jack Nicholson, and dicaprio was cool (liked him better in gangs of NY tho)

I was a little disappointed, but still thought it was a well made film. I didn't think any of the performances were bad, and the movie moved along at a brisk enough pace where it never got boring. Did it deserve Best Picture? Probably not, but I was rooting for Marty to win after losing to so many lesser directors.

I'd say you'd probably like Infernal Affairs better if it wasn't for your aversion to Asian cinema (but I guess that only applies to arthouse-type films & not the hard-edged HK gangster flicks, so maybe you'd give it a look)

I think it helps add some appreciation to the movie if you're familiar with the Whitey Bulger/John Connelly connection too (the real-life Frank Costello & Colin Sullivan)

the soundtrack also added alot to the movie I thought... but I'm guessing you're not a big Dropkick Murphys fan either - LOL.

That line is bull to the shit.

If you don't think it was an above average movie finely executed, and I fail to understand that opinion, then you just don't.

But don't sell wolf tix that read "The Departed is 'not memorable at all...'", because that's the type of folderol that destroys credibility.

I can see how you guys felt it was corny, but I did not hear to much about the movie when it first dropped otehr than it was well done.

It was out of the theatre's before I got off my ass and saw it, so going in without any preconceptions was the best thing I could have done.

I'll check it out again and repost...

>It was well written, and kept me on edge the whole time. The

Like the dude said, it had a 'State Property' or
'I'm Bout It' sort of storyline and ending. Very amateurish
and silly. In fact, I'll take 'State Property' over this
shit anyday.

The movie didn't know when to be goofy or when to
be serious...it mixed them together and it came
across very retarded sometimes(Lol - Matt Damon sending
text messages in his pocket as a CLIMAX in the film...
Lol...)

Matt Damon was terrible. His character was completely
uninteresting. His scenes were pretty bad. I know he's
a Boston white kid, but he's not at his best when
he's playing a Boston white kid(I didn't even like
*HIM* in 'Good Will Hunting'...that was
Robin Williams' movie).

The entire psychiatrist character, and all of her
interactions completely sucked. She was very, very,
boring. Very.

The movie was like a slightly suckier 'the Last
Boyscout' and that's a compliment. I'm only saying
that because 'The Departed' did have one liners.

People just have a hard time hating scorcese and
all those cast members.

Sort of like how America has found a way to like
the Oceans series, when those films are horrifyingly
bad.
