In response to Reply # 2

The underlying issue with that is whoever replaces her would have a clear advantage over other candidates during the primaries.

Additionally, Republicans have said they would be willing to seat Feinstein's replacement if she resigns, but frankly I don't believe that. I think we would be in the same place even with a replacement in regards to the judiciary committee.

90+ old wv dem robert byrd used to get pushed into the senate in a wheelchair to vote multiple times a week during the obamacare fight while he had 1 foot in the grave. literally died like 2 months after obamacare passed.

difi isnt even staying in dc to meet with her colleagues at her residence and still hammer out business while she isnt able to attend in person. so does she really intend to return to the senate any time soon?

show up or resign

i'm sure they won't retire because they and their families are getting money under the table somewhere. look at Clarence Thomas. If he retired, do you think his good friend would still be paying for his vacations?

4. "i hate how some democrats are saying its sexist to ask difi to resign"
In response to Reply # 0

because male senators have been out for stretches and not been asked to step down.

but those male senators didnt singlehandedly fuck up an entire agenda...especially judicial nominations...which historically you only have a small window to usher as many as you can through until the other party wins that chamber.

they said the same when people said rgb should have retired and allowed obama to replace her (people did it to me on here).

its like these people have no concept of how important simple political strategy like blocking and tackling is to preserving our rights and our entire democracy.

theyre just programmed to default to emotional talking points that are really superficial in the grand scheme of things.

we are supposed to allow difi to essentially obstruct her own party like mitch mcconnell would because shes a woman? then what happens when all those judge seats are held open and repubs win the presidency/senate in 2024 and fill those seats with hard right judges who will further roll back womens rights for another generation at least?

shit is so frustrating. and i cant believe people are still doing this dumb shit after rbg and the swift consequences seen in the supreme court rulings.

difi isnt even running for re-election. shes already basically retired. whats the point of her hanging around if she isnt physically capable of doing her job (and was barely capable of doing her job before she got sick)?

wouldnt be surprised if this is her and her aides (who love the dc paycheck) sticking it to dems because they pressured her into retiring in the first place.

but dont work the way theyre intended to in reality (like open primaries).

people vote for folks like difi over a long period of time because shes a known name and a reliable vote for the things they want (incumbency advantage). you cant just force those people to choose somebody new who they arent familiar with imo (just look at the people who vote for somebody new to them like sinema only to be openly betrayed once shes in office).

plus when you place term limits on folks...you remove that incumbency advantage and...with the way our campaign finance system works now...the candidate who gets flooded with money by pacs, special interest groups, and wealthy donors gets a significant boost because theyre more capable of getting their name/face out on the airwaves and forming an identity with the voters. its especially pronounced in lower turnout off-year elections (when republicans historically have made their most gains).

the addition of term limits to states like nebraska, missouri, etc. have been a catalyst for their acceleration further right and been a disaster for democracy and civil/workers rights in those states.

so the real world application of term limits has already shown them to be pretty bad (unless youre a corporation, christian fascist, gun nut, etc).

theres a reason term limits are pushed hard by the koch brothers, heritage foundation, etc.

like, i get what you're saying FOR SURE.

but we shouldn't have lifetime politicians. it just makes the problem of money in politics (the biggest issue in our system) worse.

term limits as an idea shouldn't be this frought. if dems are losing positions that were already held by dems because of them then that means the candidates to fill that position weren't good.

In response to Reply # 12

I know the arguments against term limits. And an additional one is that it actually empowers unelected staffers since they are the only ones whose jobs are permanent.

And that makes sense for short term limits. VA has a one year term limit for the governor and that's stupid.

But what about longer term limits. Like 20 years is plenty of time to do good in congress and groom your successor.

also, even 10 year term limits makes sense...like, you can't find a good replacement in 10 years (let alone 20) then what are we doing here?

The one thing that's sticking with me as I type this tho is that, without Biden where would we be lol. For all his imperfections, he got the demagogue out of office for now.

Although I suppose Trump would've never gotten *in* in the first place were age limits in place, so there's that.

I'd imagine an 80 something year old person would just want to chill. Especially if they are feeling old.

I guess the job isn't that strenuous unless you want it to be. And it's probably entertaining for them.

It's the same reason a lot of revolutionaries become dictators.

I've seen a lot of executives resist successions plans because they swear there number 2, there most trusted right hand man, can't do the job they've been watching them do for the longest.

Chuck Grassley is 89. Hal Rogers is 85.

Republicans stay in power just as long as Democrats.

At 81, I think a younger person would be able to garner more cohesion among the more extreme elements of the GOP.

In fact the GOP in general is lead by old people who refuse to change with the times.

Obviously I'm not in favor of the GOP succeeding, but they would have more success if they weren't lead by people who refuse to change and continue to embrace rules and laws that the majority of Americans don't like.

(and two of them were renaming post offices lol)

But even ignoring that, if the argument is that people of a certain age with health issues are more prone to being out sick and therefore shouldn't be in power, why is Bernie not privy to the same rule?

This is a 81 year old man who has already had one heart attack. In the same way Dianne didn't plan to get a shingles attack, we don't know when Bernie will next have another heart attack and be out for weeks at a time.

Tell me what's the difference?

1) She voted in the last meeting by proxy, and seven people have been advanced out of committee. (tho admittedly she can only vote on people for whom she won't be a deciding vote)

https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/20/politics/feinstein-senate-judiciary-committee-nominees/index.html

2) My argument is that we don't need to take on right wing talking points and we need to remain united. I haven't said whether I think she's too old or not, but if she is, the time to have that conversation was in 2018 when she was up for reelection, not now.

3) SHE OFFERED TO TEMPORARILY STEP DOWN FROM THE COMMITTEE! Why isn't the ire on the fucking Republicans who refuse to seat a replacement, and not on the person recovering from a health issue? It's annoying as hell to act as if Republicans have no agency or sense of responsibility towards the office they serve, and only Democrats have to be the responsible party.

4) I am hesitant to place blame on sick people. Jamie Raskin has cancer and has been lucky enough to work through it, but if he wasn't, do we immediately demand he retires too? We have to have reasonable demands that go for all people.

5) Just like I said earlier, if she resigns and we get a replacement for her, I don't trust that the Republicans will seat her replacement on the committee. We'd still be in the same damn place.

5) Lastly, and probably most importantly, she's already announced she's going to retire. Biden has been killing the judicial appointments, and a temporary slowage doesn't take away from what has already been accomplished and what we can reasonably expect to get done with a small amount of bipartisanship (even with these GOP savages).

If we talking about votes, Bernie has historically missed far more than Dianne.

From 2/1993-5/2023, Dianne has missed 435/10273 votes, or 4.2%.
From 1/2007-5/2023, Bernie has missed 752/5392 votes, or 13.9%.

So Bernie has missed twice as many votes despite being in Congress for less than half the time Dianne has.

I don't hate Bernie. I just think if progressives want to worship someone and let them get away with norms that they want to punish other people for, it should be somebody who's effective.

Edit: This info is from Govtrak, and is only for roll call votes. Not certain how voice votes would change this.

because there are ALSO old Republicans and Progressives in office?

Is this really the argument you want to make?

Bernie isn't hindering the Biden admin.

The GOP politicians could be anywhere from 20 to 180 years old, the result would be the same FOR US.

We are talking about a Senator who is actively hurting this admission's progress.

Not everything needs to be this tribal whataboutism bullshit.

Do you want Dems to win or no?

If so, fucking stop. She needs to retire. Full stop.

Anything else is fickle Democrat cheerleading for the sake of cosigning Nancy Pelosi and shit like that.

Its type of thinking that leads to Democrats punching themselves (and their voters) in the face.

** And no, "voting" isn't the issue here. An incumbent senator in CA isn't losing a primary and obviously not the GE. That is also bullshit Democrat thinking where you have been tricked into blaming everything on voters so you never question your leaders.

Its okay to expect the "good guys" to do good. She needs to step down.

So for all the talk about her holding up judges, there was no delay because there is a backlog of floor votes.

All this uproar for nothing.

Look I'm pragmatic, sometimes to the point of coldness I think.

Dems are fucked if she leaves. Newsom can seat another senator, but I truly think Republicans aren't going to seat her replacement on the judicial committee.

So what should we do? Do we replace her and guarentee an extreme slowdown if not complete stoppage of judges? Or do we allow her to finish up the year and a half that she has left and continue to place judges?

She says she wants to serve, she feels she can serve, and she has the support to help her serve.

Whether it's right or wrong it's happening, and if Reagan could finish out his term so can she.

Totally different issue.

I can see how having to pick one candidate would cause a shit show, best outcome is she get's to serve out her term.

If the issue is we're worried that a pick would have a senatorial advantage because of name recognition, he just picks someone who states they're not going run for that office. Lee/Porter/Schiff would all be out and they can run without the whiff of favoritism.

88. "Diane Feinstein died ☹️"
In response to Reply # 0

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/29/dianne-feinstein-dead.html

Dianne Feinstein, the oldest member of the U.S. Senate and the longest-serving senator from California, has died at age 90, two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News on Friday.

The Democrat’s passing marks the end of a boundary-pushing political career that spanned more than half a century, studded with major legislative achievements on issues including gun control and the environment.

Feinstein had planned to retire at the end of her current term in 2024.

Feinstein’s death leaves vacant her powerful Senate seat, requiring Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint a temporary successor.

A San Francisco native, Feinstein cleared a path for women in politics as she rose the ranks of leadership. After two failed bids for mayor, she was elected president of San Francisco’s board of supervisors in 1978, becoming the first woman to hold the title.

Feinstein was made acting mayor of the city later that year, after then-Mayor George Moscone and Harvey Milk, her colleague on the board of supervisors, were assassinated by Dan White, a former member of the same board.

In later interviews, Feinstein recalled finding Milk’s body and searching for a pulse by putting her finger in a bullet hole.

Feinstein was the first to announce the murders to the press. She was appointed mayor a week later, again becoming the first woman elevated to the office.

The tragedy had the side effect of jumpstarting Feinstein’s political career, but the trauma of the day stuck with her even decades later.

“I never really talk about this,” Feinstein said with a sigh when asked about the murders in a CNN interview in 2017.

Her streak of firsts continued at the national level. Feinstein lost a gubernatorial bid in 1990, but two years later won a special election to the U.S. Senate, becoming California’s first female senator.

Weeks later, the state’s second female senator, Barbara Boxer, was sworn into office, making California the first state in the U.S. to be represented in the Senate by two women.

Their 1992 elections helped define the “Year of the Woman,” in which four Democratic women were newly elected to the Senate — more than doubling the chamber’s female representation.

In the Senate, Feinstein clinched some of her biggest legislative achievements. She wrote and championed the 1994 assault weapons ban, both a landmark bill and a continuation of a career-long effort to enact stricter gun controls.

The legislation passed Congress and was signed by then-President Bill Clinton, albeit with major compromises including a 10-year sunset provision. The ban expired in 2004 during the administration of George W. Bush.

She also sponsored bills that protect millions of acres of California’s desert, worked to create a nationwide AMBER alert network, helped reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act and fought for the release of a lengthy report detailing the CIA’s torture practices, among other accomplishments.

Over her three decades in the Senate, Feinstein has generally been seen as a political moderate in her party. In the 1990s and 2000s, that reputation made Feinstein highly popular — but much of that popularity eroded in the proceeding years as California’s political tint shifted toward deeper shades of blue.

As her centrism grew increasingly out of fashion, Feinstein’s standing in her final stretch in office was further diminished by a crescendo of skepticism about her mental fitness for the Senate.

A damning report from the San Francisco Chronicle in April 2022 featured unnamed Democratic colleagues of Feinstein fretting over her apparent decline in mental acuity. Feinstein defended her ability to govern, while acknowledging that she had been going through an “extremely painful and distracting” period as her late husband, financier Richard Blum, had battled cancer.

By the time Feinstein announced that she would not seek reelection at the end of her term in 2024, multiple Democratic politicians had already launched campaigns to succeed her.

and it really makes me scared to think we will have another presidential election between 2 old ass dudes who will probably die in the next 5 years.

There was not an abundance of courage during that period for either the Bush administration running the program or the Obama administration working to conceal the details, but she used her power to try doing something objectively good, completely necessary, and very unpopular. We all owe her a debt of gratitude for that.

she was on the committee and even if Newsome replaces her that's only for the Senate seat.

Repubs will just refuse to put that person in her seat on the committee which deadlocks the committee aka no approved appointees.

this true?
