The way I see it, a perpetrator of a real hate crime victimizes not just their victim but all members of their target group.
By the same logic, the faker of a hate crime inflicts nearly as much damage as the real hate crime assailant, since the faker has just one fewer victim.
We shouldn't go soft on people who terrorize communities, whatever their reason.
