"But I TRIED to like them..."

Name some groups that seem to be critical favorites AND get props from music lovers, and you TRIED to like them....but no dice...

Short list:
1.Alicia Keys

2.Jazzyfatnastees
(where's fire when you need her?)

3.Black Eyed Peas
(I know Will I Am posts here, maybe we'll discuss this later)

Will be back with explanations...

"Go on and do your lil' la-di-da thang. You ain't Donna Summers!"
-the Honorable Ike Turner

"It's hard to do riiiiight...."
-Tony and Harvey, the Mayfield Bros.

the reason Craig is not working for you is because you are trying to be filled in, or perhaps you are resisting it. you're supposed to be filling HIM in! THEN and only THEN will you be able to understand what all the hype is about!

but really, though… you didn't even feel "rewind"?

Everyone here must really like you.

I expected for you to get blasted for anti-Jill sentiments.

I like Badu as well. Her vulnerability on Mama's Gun was special (Green Eyes is a favorite of mine...Good, long songs move me, I guess. I'm an Isaac Hayes fanatic).

My two cents on Jill:

Jill is an acquired taste, IMO. I don't know many folks who have put up a big effort to listen to her who didn't grow to like or love the CD.

If you listen to her album five times and still don't like it, I guess it is just a difference in taste.

And that is cool with me. If you don't like it, you don't like it. That don't mean that you hatin (this statement is an adaption of words from Common on Like Water For Chocolate, the slept on 'classic').

Oh man, does Company Flow ever fit this category. I bought "Funcrusher Plus" strictly on the word of cats on RMHH.

And boy was I ever a sucker. Actually, I think the production on the album was top-notch. But the rhymes were just not moving me in any way shape or form. Not necessaarily the content, but the awful delivery.

I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought that Mary's new stuff was trash. First time I heard Family Affair, I was like, what is this Cottonelle type stuff I'm hearing here. Over time the beat has grown on me but the lyrics are still butt. And let's not get into the rest of the stuff on the album. Anyway, to all those doubting Jill, it's kind of hard for me to fathom, because I appreciate her music so much, but to each his own. But, just give it one more try. Tip: Appreciate Jill for who she is, without comparing her to Badu.

My List of Those Unable to Convert Me to the Darkside:

1. Jazzies (Don't know if it was just their lyrics or Scott Storch's so-so production that turned me off, but the only song I'm feeling is Unconventional Ways, and that actually is one of my favorite songs. So obviously, they have it in them. A therapy group probably needs to be created for them and Nas.)

2. Most underground stuff, i.e., Co Flow, Cannibal Ox, Deltron, anything Prince Paul or Automator affilitated, etc. (This stuff just seems to convoluted and precocious. In other words, trying to hard to be different and also seem intelligent.)

3. Prince (I bought the Hits basically on the strength of I Would Die 4 U, and I was highly disappointed. I mean, some of the stuff is cool, such as Pink Cashmere and Diamond and Pearls, but the rest of it just sounds like a 15-year old having too much fun with a synthesizer and his father's guitar. Just too electronic for me. I rather a more organic feel, maybe similar to Voodoo. With all the D'Angelo comparisons to Prince, I was expecting something similar to the vibe on Voodoo, but was quick to be taught better.)

4. Most of Jefflee's recommendations. Now, don't get me wrong, I respect him as a person who has a plethora of musical knowledge, but some of the stuff he suggests is just anti-enjoyable to sometimes cheesy. Like seriously, Tonex is not cutting it. Cat sounds like any old Timbaland impersonation.

5. And, to cut my list short: Alicia Keys. When I first heard her song on the Shaft soundtrack and then Girlfriend, I was hyped. On Girlfriend, she did R&B/hip hop justice. Many other singers just can't blend to a hip hop track. Alicia actually seemed to mesh perfectly with ODB's jacked track, courtesy of JD, Mr. " I don't know why no one gives props to my no talented ass." Heard Falling, and was basically convinced she was our next heroine. Heard the album in totality, and quickly learned the pitfalls of a quick tongue. Now, don't get me wrong, her music doesn't suck, but it is totally uninspired demo material. She really needed to hire some outside producers and writers.

Look how far El Dorados and wine bottles drug us /Least God and the sun love us - Common

So many ways out the hood but no signs say out- Nas

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

they don't seem to get that much critical acclaim, do they?
at least round here

mines:

Jill "Nyquil" Scott...actually, I blame it on "A Touch of Jazz"

Sade

Jamiroquai

Cannibal Ox. In the beginning I thought I wasn't feeling it because it was released in the summer and it's not a summer album. But now, the winter has come and I don't feel any more compelled to listen to it. I like the beats, but their voices irritate me..

hmmm..."Aquemini", the album. I thought it sounded very contrived. And definitely overrated.

I know. I really seem to be alone in that stance. Aversion is a strong word, though. I like some of the stuff that was on the album, but it was the stuff that was the most reminiscent of their first two albums (Slump, Savannah, Rosa Parks). I also liked Spottie. But some of the more progressive stuff felt really contrived. Like that track with George Clinton. I felt he was there only because he IS George Clinton. And I cringe when I hear people praise the title track as this deep, deep shit cause it sounds type corny to me. And...oh well, let me stop here.

hopefully is the last p-funked intense outing for outkast. its time to move on. chameleons activate!!

loved aquemini. it was different

like stankonia somewhat. its carrying what was started on aquemini further.

they lose their edge if their new material sounds like another george clinton production.

You didn't type that...Tell me, you did not just type that?

To me, ATLiens is the absolute best Outkast album. And I'm an Outkast fan.

I'd five mic two of their CDs and put a "this will be considered special in fifteen years" tag on Stankonia.

I also think that Dre is underrated lyrically. Maybe it is geography and dress code. Who knows?

And I imagine that 'Kast sounds like Clinton because Dre and George are suppposidely good buddies.

>i'm not that big on "southernplayerlistic"

Partial 'cosign' with erasable ink. IMO, it is better than it should have been considering the subject matter, the age of 'Kast at the time of recording, and the time period. But, it doesn't stand up to their later work, IMO.

Aquemini is my favorite album because ATLiens fades pretty badly at the end. The only skippable song on Aquemini is "Mamacita".

>Bilal - Just no. Oversinging, unoriginal.
OK. So Bruh needs his own variety show. but listening to the quality of his voice separates him from any one out today, IMO. Bruh does need to do more singin and less actin sumtimes. He scurrrs the bejesus outta me humpin mikes and bug eyein the camera.
>Jazzyfatnastees - they can sing, but the songs put me to sleep.
No frontin. It took me 3 listenins to realy feel the jazzies. Production and arrangement coulda flowed a tad better but after time, I only had beef with 3 songs. (The last one being the main offender.)That's why I can't wait to hear their next piece,to see how much they've learned from lasttime.

>Erykah Badu's "Mama's Gun" (I like
>her, just didn't care for the album)
Yeah. I culd see how some peeps could not feel her. Sometimes I have to kick myself for singin along and not knowin WHAT THE HELL SHE IS TALKIN ABOUT.("Add 240 to 87.5 and divide that by 32. And what does that mean? It means that the aliens have come. Have come to save us from the the people that have lived in my head wrap for 360 years...")...Ooookayy. But IMO, she made that joint flow. It was like evry song flowed into the next. That's prolly what I liked most bout M'sG.

Alicia Keys- She can sing buuuut...I'm not feeling her song arrangements(Thanks to AudioGal for the heads up)"Girlfriend's lyrics and melody just don't flow together for me. I think once she gets the lyric and melody to jive with her voice, THEN her music'll be tight.

That Chick from the gap commercial...Yeah, yeah. Cherokee. Sum folks was likin her. But I couldn't tell whether it was cause she was cute or her music was tight. Her first album sucked grass, IMO. Production was yucky. But she did make a sister wanna hit up the Gap for that Jacket she had on.

Any group out now with 4 to 5 white guys tryin to look cool in tight leather pants. I guess N'sync does have a good stage show but other than that the music is sucky sucky.

and I tried, I really tried to like it.

But it just doesn't work for me. I like several of the songs. But I find myself skipping too many when I play the CD. The only song I really don't like is *gasp* "Orange Moon." The rest, while I don't mind them really, just once I'd played them through a couple times, I just felt I didn't need to ever play the CD again. I'd revist it after a couple week, playing it at work, and I just couldn't make it through the whole thing.

Meh.

true true...forgot about him. his voice is just annoying as all hell on fast lane. i loved soul sista, but that high-pitched shrill gotsta go.

some more:

lina and kina--actually i didn't try--hurt too much
kelis--liked a couple songs, but that about it (c)jay-z
staind--terribly overrated and they suck
jaguar--i don't get the millie jackson comparisons maybe cause i never really cared for millie jackson.
jay-z, ja-rule, dmx--please take a f'kin hiatus from making music, damn!
(in the future) beyonce--the way she sings is annoying period and i know i won't like (or buy) the solo debut.

individual songs:

contagious--stop with the mr. bigs bs already. its killing my old skool image you.
that public announcement song--nuff said
family affair--sick of that dre beat and those stupid words

If you really listen to their albums you can see the elements that High Llamas incorporate into the Stereolab records (vibes, horns, etc.). The only similarities are when each work on each others' stuff, but Stereolab is alot more funky than High Llamas are, while High Llamas brings the orchrestrated sound to Stereolab.

High Llamas is a lot more song-based. and while both use unusual vintage instruments, Stereolab leans more on analog synths while High Llamas utilizes banjos, harmonium, French horn and strings.

Melodically, Stereolab is influenced by Burt Bacharach, while High Llamas is just a big love letter to Brian Wilson. totally different animals.

When their first album came out i copped it as like my first tape when i was in like 6th or 7th grade. I lied the next day and said i didnt buy it cause i wanted to hear what everybody else had to say about it and this one dude that used to be into rap like that was lovin it. I let him go on and on about it and then i was like yo i copped it and i think it's ass. And just like all other wu tang fans to this day he couldnt then and probably cant now explain why the album is so good. Wu Tang fans seem to be retarded in some way. I mean u would have to to follow dickheads such as the Wu and all their retarded members. The beats are hot and what I've narrowed it down to since no Wu Tang fan and tell me a hot line that was so devastating that they had to rewind it back/ learn the words or bother to understand what the hell they are saying. So any way if u like Wu Tang just come out and blame it on the beat and if u cant admit to it just being the beat then i will accept their flow but other than that yall all need helmets cause the streets anit safe for people like u.

Meth is the only one i used to like and he could get any good lyrics to match his flow that eat the game up when he came out. It's been all downhill since M-e-t-h-o-d man, man.

Am i hatin??? naw .... but every defense i get from a Wu Tang fan is like someone tryin to explain to me why CarrotTOP is the best comedian.

It's all good tho. Keep buyin their records cause retarded people have to eat too and i dont want to be personally responsible for Ghost and his other 6 th grade drop out friends riding on the back of the train for six straight runs sinkin up the whole train. Cause i doubt they have the mental capacity to do any thing else but entertain clown like them who encourage stupidity.

Classic Ghost quote: Well not really a quote but when he was on Rap City promoting his album, i think it was last year, Tigga was dick eating as usual and asking Ghost about one of his lines that Tigga and his friends have been arguing for years about what Ghost ment when he said some shit about " 12 money keys ..... bla bla bla" and after Tigga said the line Ghost was like " I dont know what it means, The only way i could've told u was if u was to ask me right then and there when i wrote the rhyme". How can u not know what u mean??? Seriously??? And to not know what u mean but still put it out there to your adoring public who think your a genius????

Y arent Nore fans Ghost fans??? they both stupid they both crazy/funny ???? I guess it's the flow huh???

I guess it's just me. Carry on.

I'll never know what makes this world go round.

Early!

Or any Wu member for that matter... you'll never want to listen to their music again. They come across like drugged-out fools speaking on nonsense and trying to act hard. I hated Ghost off a RapCity appearance for years and was just recently able to listen again. His music is a mess (I don't care how you sort it) but I can feel his flow in the right mood and love some of those beats.

RZA tends to be at least semi-coherant sometimes. And his perspectives on hip-hop are understandable at times.

Be warned: the self-love if off the meter, so prepare to laugh (like Mase and Wyclef did on that MTV show a few years back).

"To quote my homeboy, Ghost, 'You gotdamn right, we f*ck fans" - RZA on the MTV show(sorry, Bobby Digital side of RZA)

I give Common his props for lyrical skill, but I can't see where there was an old Common. He changed identities per album.

Can I borrow a dollar = semi-thug, slouchy negro, womanizer
Resurrection = conscious, introspective, a lil' older
One Day...= ??????????????????????????????????????????
LWFC = sometimes conscious, sometimes bland, sometimes mish mosh, religous?, philisophical?, pro-black?

Who is the real Common?

I am beginning to feel alone in a world where only a few folks liked the Bilal CD. He took a bunch of chances and a lot of them worked for me. Whereas Carl Thomas's oversinging can be cheesy, Bilal's assault on his songs work for me.

12 Play.

His remixes.

Down Low.

And "I believe I can fly".

The last CD was underachieving.

The genre has grown and his music has not. But he comes off as being genuine whereas a Ray-J comes off as doing what is popular at the time.

I know Xaclty what you mean....R.Kelly sucks pigfeet. (And I actually used to think he was cute.) But I jus know that man's arrogant. He's prolly sittin at home grabbin his nuts and callin MTV, BET, and all radio suckas for playin a song that he wrote while he was gettin high on paint fumes and camel shi*.

Therefore, and wherewithin, I now deem myself a recording artist. My first single will be called "Gettin my Hair did", followed by the song, "Hey Shoooootttay. Lemme Holla atchu.". Both singles will be released on the new LP entitled "Gettin Numbas at the Mall."

funny.
i think r. kelly is infinitely high. he cannot write. period.
bilal was a disappointment. i was expecting an album full of soul sista quality cuts. but was left hanging...
india.arie lacks...something

and on a totally different note,
KIRK FRANKLIN- i tried, tried, and tried to like him, but to no avail. i dig gospel, but i'm dumbfounded as to how this cat made it. call and response? repeat after me? listening to him makes me want to jump from a building. the man upstairs has got to be behind him.

ditto on the jazzies.
but i find the mr biggs thing quite amusing. ronald isley is timeless. he needs a new hairstyle though. that "wet look" is sooo played.

Dilated and J5-saw em both in concert and was like "WOW!" bought the cds and was like "FUCK!"

Tupac-i never really got it............ya know? I just dont get it.

Cannibal Ox-one of the determining factors i use when cd shopping is employee recommendations. I visit two stores enough where the folks that work there pretty much know what I like. I wanted to rip the sleeves off the employees shirt when this got recommended to me.

Macy Gray
Alicia Keyes
India Arie
Staind
Likkin Park-if I hear another "rap-rock" group...........
JAy Z(post vo1. 1)
anything that has to be described as bounce music

my nephew: Its just a cartoon Bob.

Me: yea..I know but how come he's blue?

my nephew: because..to make him different from all the other people on Doug.

Me: yea I know..but why BLUE?

my nephew: because they're showing that there's no more prejudice.

1. Alicia Keys...I didn't try that hard. But I did make some effort.

2. Sleepy's Theme...I don't hear what Fire hears.

3. Shuggie Otis...I like "Inspiration Information" (a LOT), but the rest of that album is so sterile and cold. It's got all the elements of funk, as though Shuggie knows the formula (drum machine, scratch guitar, deep bass, live drums, syncopation), but the product as a whole doesn't speak to me. Nothing like Sly Stone's music does.

4. Common...LWFC was cool, but I'm still not a fan.

5. Tonex...I don't hear what Jeflee hears.

Does nothing for me. Granted his music is soulful and funky at times, but I don't like his voice for at all. I cringe when I hear it. I've tried, hell my dad used to play the hell out of Al back when I was a shorty so maybe that's the reason why I can't stand him till this day. I simply don't like it.

I picked this CD up (pawn shop find!) and didn't feel nearly as good as folks thought I should have. I like it, but I prefer Maxwell and D'Angelo. With distance.

Some folks have said that this is the best CD of its kind. After slapping them and referring them to Bootsy and Ike Hayes, I light a candle and cool off like cars in the garage.

Man, I love that doggone album! Different from Resurrection, but LWFC is still a 'special' album, IMO. I listen to this even when I'm out of my 'hip-hop' zone.

1. De La Soul is Dead...I don't get into it as much as 3 Feet or Buhloone. Everybody loses their shit over "Bitties", but the song bores the hell outta me. I guess I'm just not into silly rap like that. And the skits are tiresome. Maybe if I'd heard this when I was junior high I could get into it more. As it stands now the humor on here is way beneath me. (I feel that way about most of Prince Paul's work, actually) I haven't heard Stakes Is High (and I don't care to) and Mosaic Thump I bought, but only played ONCE. It's funny, "Buddy" was the 1st hip-hop song I really paid attention.

2. Baduizm (Erykah Badu)...Y'all are all crazy. "On and On", "Certainly", and "Otherside of the Game" are the only listenable songs on the whole record. Mama's Gun is the truth.

3. ATLiens (Outkast)...I avoided the album for years b/c of the cover. I don't like comic books and the fact that the album was supposed to be one told me I wouldn't like it. I should have stuck w/that thinking.

Listen, I have seriously tried to get into De La, but somehow their music just misses me. I don't find them particularly funny or witty & other than that they offer little but the normal hip-hop posturing. And coming from them that posturing is absolutely ridiculous. What else are they supposed to be saying? What should I be hearing that I'm not?

The fact that you say they're "posturing" means you really don't get it. Besides humor is only one facet of their greatness.

Some of the things I read on this site.....ARGGGGHHHH!!!!

But I really don't care to.

And by "posturing" I meant all that bragging that every MC does in 1 way or another. Either it's "I got more ice than you" or "I'm more righteous than you", or in De La's case "I'm more witty and smarter than you". It's all the same shit.

>or in De La's

and it's not the same shit. Cause this is something they can actually prove with their rhymes.

But on top of their undeniable wittiness and the quality and innovation of Prince Paul's production, I guess the reason I like them so much is that it's easy to identify with them. I know this will seem very naive, or even stupid, but they sound like they could be your friends.

And that is what it all boils down to. They're nerds. I went to college w/kids like that, and I couldn't WAIT to get away from them.

man, you betta listen

Listen all you fellas, here's what good love is
Listen all you fellas, the kind she understands
Listen all you fellas, then you won't have to worry no no more
Listen all you fellas, you betta listen (you betta listen)

We was at some outside jam one saturday night
When this pretty ass girl got locked in my sight
She was a ghetto philosopher
Yeah you know the type
Thinkin' Mary J. and sade understood her strife
Caught me lookin', "Yo what's cookin?"
"Nothin' from around here
So don't approach or hope
To be the man of the year"
I said listen deer or rabbit or whatever the hell you be
I'm not the one to embarrass
But the one to emcee
I traveled the world q uarters on my relationships
Used and abused by hoes
So my royalty stubs
But above all
I brought my daughter into this earth
So I understand the need
Of women feeling of worth
She glanced deep in my eyes
And said "oh shit, you're ill
I like the way your mind
Moves around at will
Still, let me apologize for soundin so sassy
But you niggas act as if my ass
Has a sign that says harass me"
Her name was gail from the union of dale
I made her remove the shades
So her eyes could tell me the plan
Yo where's your man?
"Oh that nigga's past tense,
Painted bruises on my face
Haven't seen him ever since"
Gave a pinch to my bottom
And started rubbing my back
She said "i bet your ass is darker
Than a mobb deep track"
Only one way to know it,
And i was down to show it
So we jetted back to my crib to set it
She made it known
"I've owned thoughts of you
Since that song 'meeny-meeny'
Can't believe you're about
To be all up in between me"
Man, the flag was lowered
So my wood was raised
Followed a shielding of my building
To protect me from the blaze
This granted access to
Southern parts of her borders
Did you have her comin'?
Like the new world order
I caught her with the right combination
A good combination
Keepin' it in her hard, man
You betta listen

they ain't nerds, they got game

plus, you're a fan of Prince, of all people...the guy who puts his song "1+1+1=3" or whatever 33mn33s into his album, for Christ's sake
now, that's what I call being a nerd

(and my friends ain't nerds either...shiiieeet)

140. "Prince is a huge loner."
In response to Reply # 139

I identify w/Prince b/c he seems like the kind of guy who sits alone in his bedroom having nasty thoughts and writing them down. He's the type who feels he's misunderstood by the world, when really it's that he's afraid of the world, and so he keeps to himself mostly. And then when he does emerge, he remains hidden behind a Pimp facade. I identify w/him that way.

De La is a group of nerdy guys who like to throw words around to amuse their little circle of friends. They consider themselves better than the world around them b/c they're "oh so witty". As if. They're the type who play video games and shit and collect comics and shit. They laugh at booger and fart jokes, I bet. I was never that guy.

they're much more complicated than that

they're fundamentally depressive (at least they were), but since they're not pitifully self-conscious, they hide it behind their humor. The type of guys you describe wouldn't write a song like, say, "Millie pulled a pistol on Santa". Or "The Brakes". They got soul (no pun intended). Loads of it, to me.

we say "l'humour, c'est la politesse du désespoir"
De La expresses this idea amazingly well.

black eyed peas - que dices/falling up/joint with esthero..good songs, i'd put them on a mixtape.

aceyalone/freestyle fellowship/project blowed - assorted tracks I like, but I could never stand a whole lp

the beatnuts - I love the beats, i hate the rappers.

the new alkaholiks - which I define as anything past the 2nd lp

boot camp clique after le flah - they've topped themselves, it gets no better. OGC, smif n wessun lp's 2 and 3, all the other BCC cats.

Blackalicious/Latyrx - to quote Kane, be sleeping on your rhymes till I start to snore

The blueprint - and I like Jay
fabolous - and I don't mind Mase
Shyne - and I like biggie

Reflection Eternal - man, man, man, I tried to love this lp. I really tried. Kweli restored my waning faith in hip hop in 1997. (well it wasn't waning, but I was getting burnt out) And then they drop that lp, with it's lack of politics

Dead Prez - if anyone should be liking the dead prez it should be me. But bad mc's + over done rhetoric....

Public Enemy after Fear of a Black Planet

EPMD - although I'm slowly coming around.

I've been thinking that Jay had him after Hard Knock.

And I preferred Pac at the time of the feud. Barely.

Still, Ready to Die is essential to anyone who claims they like straight-forward 'street' hiphop. And Life after Death was a blueprint album (sorry, Jig) that so many lamo rappers tried to follow.

Nas was a better writer (before 1996) than BIG, IMO. BUT, BIG (and a slew of others) are better than Nas overall, IMO.

And the GOAT argument is a taste issue that I try to avoid. Especially when dealing with the dead and those who don't have enough material to support GOAT arguments.

Maxwell:
I liked Urban Hang Suite well enough. And no, I didn't expect his next album to be a carbon copy of that 1.

I'm smart, I'm "deep", I smoke weed...and Embrya has never done anything but make me wanna watch TV or go to sleep. I suspect the album is actually about NOTHING and ppl are so scared that they're missing a message they end up creating one. And there are those who say the album's so deep even Maxwell doesn't understand it. How in the hell can an artist make a body of work they don't understand? It's one thing if they can't explain it...but to not be able to understand it? Uh uh. Sorry. He's full of shit.

And his new 1 didn't leap out of my stereo either.

I think his fans caught the vapors b/c of his curly-twist hairdo.

Sade:
She's boring. Her voice has NO range...it does sometimes go from quiet to LOUD (see "Is It a Crime"), but that's it. All her stuff sounds the same...which is why her records are perfect soundtracks for sleeping or fucking. They don't make great listening, though.

Angie Stone:
Angie has all the right elements of Soul Sisterhood. I just wish she had something to say.

India DOT Arie:
Just way too contrived for her own good. I don't like being hit over the head w/any message. (E. Badu had the same problem on Baduizm, so there's some hope for India).

The Strokes:
I ain't even tried liking them. It's too fun hating on their spoiled asses.

Macy Gray (on disc):
She's great live, but her albums have both fallen flat. I don't get it.

Dead Prez/Dilated Ppl:
I can't tell them apart. Which is the group that wants to kill Whitey? I don't dig them.

"urban hang suite" is lovely. his latest single is nice. but embrya was the attempt of a "sex symbol" to seem intelligent. i'm not saying you can't be both. but maxwell can't be both.

>Maxwell:

Gotta nosign you on this one as I dig all of Maxwell's stuff. I understand a large portion of it to boot. And I don't need weed to do it. I guess I'm a nerd or something.

>Sade:

nosign. no comment. Taste issue. I couldn't be upset at anyone who doesn't like her.

>Angie Stone:

damnit. You and I are on the same page. I gotta cosign. Please know that I don't want to, though. I want to like her new album. Brotha is a good start, IMO.

>India DOT Arie:

coughcoughcosigncoughcough

>Macy Gray (on disc):

Oh hell, I'll go ahead and cosign this too.

>Dead Prez/Dilated Ppl:
>I can't tell them apart.
>Which is the group that
>wants to kill Whitey?
>I don't dig them.

Prez is the anti-Whitey. I think. I need more spins of the material before I can cosign or nosign.

More artists:

Masta Killah and U-God (of Wu): I don't get it. Cameos? Sometimes. But they are in the lower half of the Wu if you ask me.

Cappadonna: I catch myself calling him Crappadonna sometimes. He pretty much lost me during the first solo album. The freeverse flow is not heavy on me.

Albums:

Goodie MOB - World Party

Killah Priest - Heavy Mental

The idea that D'Angelo's Brown Sugar is leagues better than Voodoo. Don't agree at all.

I always said that Sade was no great singer. But I do like her material. I think this is what makes her a good entertainer.

Thank you, thank you. Thank you. I thought it was only me. He is good in spurts like an inconsistent point guard, but some would lead me to believe that he was/is the best out.

At my house, I couldn't kiss the game goodbye because it hadn't even packed yet. It was sitting around chilling like it wasn't going anywhere.

Sheesh, I thought Holiday Styles roasted Kiss on a few of those songs. Kinda like AZ ran through Nas on the Firm album.

Damn. Detachable sleeves, too? You baller, you! Can you still wear it (j/k)?

In 'true hip hop fan' fashion, I no longer sponsor you because you floss too much with your successes. I mean c'mon. It is bad enough that you really had a thriller jacket. You were cool when I thought that you had no jacket.

Now, you brag about your sleeves. Unlike Wu-Tang, this is not for the babies. Hip hop is dead. This is the worst post ever. The only reason that it is being read is because hip hop posts are so mediocre nowadays.

This is the worst year in hip hop. I 'love' hip hop music yet I can't think of a positive thing to say about an album that has come out in the last 8 years. I love my people but I can't stand to listen to their autobiographies on wax, tapes, and CDs. Everything is weak. Samples were cool 10 years ago, but now I hate sampling. Well, BIG's samplings are okay, because I like Biggie. I hate Puffy, though. And don't get me started on Jay-Z. He brags too much. I'd rather listen to Big Daddy Kane. His bragging is okay.

Jimaveli: you do know that I'm playing, right?

The Arsonists

Everybody was hyping them up when "As The World Burns" as the next great indy label group. Along the lines of Co-Flow, and BlackStar (from back when Rawkus was an indy label), and all that. This tape did shit for me. They said nothing worthy of remembering. The beats were nothing, shit I could've thrown together over the weekend.

Jill Scott

Alright. Just not something worthy of all the critical acclaim she's received in my opinion.

Jaguar

I know her album hasn't dropped yet. I haven't liked what I've heard out of her so far. I'm sick of how she's being pushed down our throats promotion-wise already around here. I'm sick of seeing ten different variations of the same two promo photos of her. What have we learned about her from these photos? She smokes and she has an attitude. Whoopty fuck.

Alicia Keys

God, I already hate this bitch. First of all, I don't know why she's being pigeonholed into the whole neosoul category. What, because she plays piano she's neosoul now? Wow. I'm sure everyone who plays piano is considered neosoul. Since R. Kelly knows how to play piano, I guess that means "Feelin On Yo Booty" is neosoul. But also, why is she being praised like she's changing R&B? What because Clive Davis put her ass out on J Records? Yeah, I'm sure a 70 year old white guy has his finger on the pulse of neosoul. She's released one goddamn single, and it was already played the fuck to death three months ago. Give it a fuckin' rest.

Lauren Hill aka Plastic Bitch

She sings, and she can rhyme. And because she has dreadlocks and is married to Bob Marley's kid (or at least was), people praise her as this great musical genius who defies the classification of genre. What is she doing that Queen Latifah didn't do before her?!!?

Dilated Peoples

Generic, stale punchlines over so-so beats. They're like a two man version of whatever Defari is as a solo act.

Jay-Z. I never liked him but his new album seemed to get props in the mainstream and underground media, so I tried to listen to it. after 3 songs I couldn's stand any more of it and smashed the cd into tiny bits.

just about anything jay dee has had a hand in producing in the last 4 years or so...ya'll made it sound like it was the next shit, so i got the shit and listened to the shit and now shit is getting dusty...2 songs on the love movement, a few on lwfc and dynamite are about it for me, everything else i'm not feeling

dilated was ok, it gets burn about every 3 months though

any pete rock...shit is good, but not amazing, i don't feel compelled to listen to it..ever

and reachin by digable planets too...some is nice, but those lyrics are off on jupiter somewhere...and their voices are too smooth and soft for my taste

i like j5 though, nice beats and i like the whole group rapping thing...it's not amazing shit, but i like it

and southernplayalistic is off the hook

that's it...that's all i got

organized konfusion

i got (or had) both of thier lps and it jus neva stuck one me. stress: whats jus that, it STRESSed the hell out of my wallet. the beats was subpar and boring to the point where i didnt even care what the hell they was talkin about, keep in mind that pharohe is one of my top 5 fav. emcees.

epmd (thier new stuff) average beats with barely average rhymes

im surprised no one mentioned ras kass or canibus, i figured they would get burned up in here too. hell damn near everyone else has.

let me see what else.... common's 'can i borrow a dollar' there was only a few joints i could actually like but that about it.

and here it is.... get ready...

THE ROOTS!!! yea i said it WHAT!??!!! no but seriously, im jus not feelin them like so many of thier fans is, maybe its because i've neva seen them in a live show, yea that could be it. but forreal though, blk thought puts me to sleep sometimes and his material almost never changes, which is why i loved malik b so much, jus when i almost had enough of Thought, malik would come in and break up the monotomy (sp?) but the still in my top 5 though, right behind slum vill. thats right i said it WHO WANT IT!!!???!!!

You've never seen the Roots...never!!! Damn I sympathize. If Black Thought puts u to sleep who keeps u up????? Anyhoo mine... I can't think of anyone, I don't usually "Try" to like anybody. I just download a few singles and if it's nice on the ears I'll cop the album.

Keep on.

the first 2 roots albums blew ass. They finally made the record they had in them w/TFA

Bob Dylan-Some kid burned me 2 CD's worth of his shit, but when I hear him on the radio those CD's get pushed back another few months

Dilated-They just LOOK boring as fuck...

Blackalicious-Heard a few cuts in the record store went out to buy it, and realized that dude's voice is unlistenable

Jill Scott-I like her, but that album, though....

2pac-I really dont understand why he had so many cats in love w/him. I think he was extremely talented but squandered it. He was a HUGE poseur, and no one seems to see that...

GangStarr after Daily Operation-Premier shit the bed

Black Moon-Enta Da Stage was wack......

Electronic Music-Moby, Fatboy Slim, Crystal method, etc...

Jazzies-Please Mercedes, get your brother(J-Swift)back in the studio!. Favorite Things-Hot! Once and Future-damn....

Gorillaz-Garbage

Hiero-no charisma

Dead Prez, The Coup-As pro-Black as I am, If you are boring, you're boring...

underground MC's-they forget that music is FUN!, shit, they forget abt. music

Bahloone Mind State-The shit was wack...

Jay Dee-His beats are cool, not genius...

Goodie Mob-The accents are just too much and Gipp and T-Mo are just wack...

I might think of more lata...

Eh. I like it pretty well, but ultimately his flow, delivery, and subject matter leave me feeling bland.
Same with beats on _Ironman_, especially compared with _Liquid Swords_ and the other solos.

i *think* i feel the same way... let me see if we're on the same wavelength

it's very rare that i flat out say "i don't like this"
in fact, it's very rare that i skip tracks on an album, i tend to listen straight through
in some ways, i don't even have track *preferences* so to speak... i either like the album or i don't

i tend to focus on things i like about a track or an album rather than things i don't... there are exceptions to this rule, but most of the time i can dig something. case in point: with all the crap in the "What's Going On" cover, i still manage to enjoy it... if only for Stipe's trademark gasping vocals "Fa--th-er father..." ; i hate fred durst's section, but i don't let that spoil a song...

Gravy! I thought you were gonna holla when you came through the burrough!

Short List:

1. Ms. Keys - i liked her at first, but now, her album is under the shelf that my PS 2 is on, and gets stepped on due to laziness

2. Wyclef - Okay, he can play the guitar and makes some good music, but his rhymes absolutely SUCK!

3. Lauryn Hill (singing) - Sorry people, rhymin I love her so when she sings the disappointment is too much to bear

4. DMX - He says absolutely NOTHING and I listen haaaaarrrrrd!

5. Ja Rule - See #4

6. Black Eyed Peas - Thanks for mentioning them, i never knew what all the fuss was about. Rhymes is aiight, beats is aiight. Guess cause they're so eccentric. Whatever

1.RZA "Bobby Digital In Stereo" I thought This was gonna be a banger but I was wrong. It was hot stinkin GARBAGE.

2.Common "Like Water For Chocolate" I thought this cd had its moments. I miss the old common sense not this one tryin to drop knowledge or whatever.

3.Nas "I Am" 5 Good songs just don't cut it for me.

4.Raekown "Immobilarity" I anticipated this shit was gonna be the joint. OHHHHHHHHH I WAS WRONG!!!! THIS WAS HOT POO POO!!!

5.Rakim "The Master" You Mean "THE DISASTER" I remember when the god MC didn't curse all that much on previous releases now he resorts to this trash.

>1.RZA "Bobby Digital In Stereo"

Acquired taste theater. One person will love it and the other will hate it. That is Wu Tang for you.

To me, there was material on there (half and half), but RZA using an 'alter-ego' as an excuse to talk about weed, chicks, etc is reaching. So is the "I have 793 songs in the lab, but the public wouldn't understand it" line.

>2.Common "Like Water For Chocolate"

I just don't see where Common is sooooooo 'conscience' that it is a huge departure from Resurrection. He seems like a cat who has gone through and seen some things that are changing him bit by bit. Why is this such a problem? To me, he still pursues rap at the pace of a new jack (c) Dooin It - Common.

>3.Nas "I Am" 5 Good songs
>just don't cut it for
>me.
>

The good songs aren't the problem. The bad songs are some of the 'baddest' (not Michael Jackson Bad either) things he's ever come up with.

>4.Raekown "Immobilarity"

COSIGN with a permanent marker!!! Cuban Links is hard to follow, but still. This was uncool. Very uncool.

>5.Rakim "The Master" You Mean "THE
>DISASTER" I remember when the
>god MC didn't curse all

>now he resorts to this
>trash.
>

I feel for Rakim. He is in such a sad situation. Folks have made careers off of his style (coughnascoughcoughnas), and "the game" has probably passed him by. No matter what he does, folks will find exception with it. Expectations are just too high. cosign.

One more album (I expect major cosigns):

Snoop - Doggfather: Oh boy...I tried and tried and tried and tried. One of my biggest musical disappointment ever (that and Immobilarity and Nastradamus and...).

Man, are you crazy? Just kidding.

I cosign the Missy thoughts. Beats do not a good artist make.

Maxwell: still nosigning on him. Just listened to Now again over the weekend and was down with it.

Michael Jackson: If you pin-point certain albums (coughDANGEROUScough), I'll cosign.

I won't cosign for Jackson 5, Off the Wall, or Thriller.

Jimaveli: see, I'm flexible with my cosigns sometimes.

Seriously, I don't see him as being the 'greatest' either. Damn good, but not the 'greatest'. I would have to come with some kind of semi-objective way to 'judge' who I consider to be the 'greatest ever'. I still don't think that it would be him.

Sucked, though? That's reaching. I would have to read a list of folks who you actually do like to even begin to understand that stance.

So, hows about it? A list (5 or more) of hip-hop folks that you really like.

I wasn't a Big fan at all and I certainly do buy that "Best of All Time" garbage. I think people just caught da Holy Ghost when he died. I wouldn't say he "sucked", but he ain't the best fo' sho'.

Soul-Sista Inc. is dead. I (C_Jon) took her off of life support (thank God ), she did not need to suffer anymore. If it is meant to be she will be ressurrected and sent back to us, if not then she was a learning process to give us understanding for the future.

For the purpose of Soul-Sista was for "Soul-Sistas" to come together as one woman and birth a new spirit through our friendship.

"we(the six members of Soul-Sista Inc) were never Soul-Sista from the start just a catch phrase and a bunch of brainwashed ,miltant girls with untested ideas for unity within black women...unfortunately all we did was use this as a mask (James Baldwin calls it a gimmick, in the fire next time )to help support the Angry black woman with in us)So the minute the chips fell down and honesty (the key for which we supposedly stood for)was brought to the table(by myself) wasn't nobody woman enough to take the heat. For they could point the finger, but when it got pointed back ...their fear showed...proving that they weren't really "real" enough at all to run this thing."

"Before there can ever be a "Soul-Sista Inc" we must first deny ourselves and submit to a new found will. We must be totally upfront , honest and free with ourselves collectively and individually, accepting everyones' diversity and everyones' style and allowing that diversity to be the ingredient to make up the ultimate whole and the ultimate structure of Soul-Sista Inc herself ... At and by any means necessary... For doing things from the soul and as a soul family requires no gimmicks, no facades, no set images. but an empire built on liberty and the natural collaboration of the group members soul becoming one."

"This album is by far the greatest piece of writing, arranging, producing, and sequencing genius I've ever encountered. Anyone who has heard the first two Swamp Dogg albums will possibly say impossible, but after listening to this one will make the cross-over to incredible. The only album that may possibly compare with this one is the one that I'm contemplating doing the late future. Everything that is neccessary to make an album I have; Ego, talent, originality, humor, and I am dynamic, articulate, defiant, altruistic, considerate, warm, wonderful, & humble... I have also been a Grammy nominee for the past two years. I'm also a Cancer (July 12) and twenty nine years in the world. What you've just read is my trip, and if you can't tolerate it, that's your trip."

this cat is so overrated. it's ridiculous. he links with a dope producer, says some absolutely insane ish, and he's white. instant success! more like instant bull. granted some of his lyrics are dope, he's no rap messiah like everyone seems to think. stan was something new, but his other ish is just senseless rambling. please tell me that i'm not alone. i think his popularity stems from the fact that he's a novelty in the rap game.

Another post reminded me. I never felt this crew. Pras was horrible, he sounded like Count Dracula on every cut. Wyclef was just annoying, Lauryn basically made the crew. Together it was just weird. The production was up and down on the second album.
