a doula is a support person for a mother... birth doulas help during the labor process. there are also post-partum doula (which i am not)
the doula does nothing clinical, but is knowledgeable in the whole pregnancy, labor and birth processes, as well as pain management. she serves as an assistant to the mother and her parnter, and an advocate for her.
doulas have been shown to reduce the rates of cesarians, episiotomies and pain medication use as well as increase the mother's overall satisfaction with the birth.
