I have a five month old and this is what worked for me:
Don't get a bassinet; my little boy grew so fast it was incredible. I wanted a bassinet at first, but they are so small, you probably won't use it for long. Getting a playard with a bassinet attachment works wonderfully.
I didn't stock up on many pampers early, just try to shop at discount clubs for them, you can get like 230 for $28. That should last for like a month and change.
To bring the baby home just make sure that you have plenty of t-shirts(onesies and side snaps for until the cord falls off), tons of blankets(this is what I used the most of all), socks and tons of sleepers. After that, just buy what you need when you need it. If you have a baby shower it's even better, cause usually you get most of the things you need to start off with there. I was fortunate to have two showers, so I didn't have to purchase anything for my son until he was three months. But I STILL was in Babies R Us every damn da ! Gifts are nice, but nothing beats shopping for your little one.
