"49ers Offseason Thread"

Chip and Baalke gone.

Kap gone?

Where does the team go from here?

Jed has some decisions to make, does he make the right ones?

And most importantly, Kap and Chip go out beating SEA at home, called it!

This organization has a shit-ton of problems, the main one being is that the team is rotten at the core: as in the Yorks.

>Kaep gone?

I dunno. Maybe? Again, can't really be bothered to care either way. As said above this team has a shit ton of issues; I'm not even sure if QB makes the top 10. Kaep already played his hand by saying he's opting out, but I find it really hard to believe that some team is going to sign him for more than he would make if he stuck with the Niners. I dunno, maybe the Jets take a gamble, but I doubt they give him $15 million. I certainly wouldn't mind having him on the roster while whoever we draft gets ready.

I'm certainly hoping that there's not some thought that we HAVE to draft a QB in the first round. We need a home run hitter at any position at this point. Hate to absolutely commit to it being a QB.

>Where does the team go from here?

Well, I'm sure the Yorks are hoping to bring in some hot shit team president and sell them the idea of complete control and a blank slate to rebuild one of the storied NFL franchises. And I do think there's still some talent to build around, once they sort out who's healthy and who's not.

>Jed has some decisions to make, does he make the right ones?

If he does indeed remain in charge, I have zero confidence.

>And most importantly, Kap and Chip go out beating SEA at home,
>called it!

Seattle still something to play for, so I doubt it.

>Jed has some decisions to make, does he make the right ones?

4th head coach in as many years.

in a perfect world, jed would get chancellor-valorum'd by his mom in a vote of no confidence.

ownership's so shamelessly dysfunctional that they leaked info again (IMO). as long as paraag marathe (the resident leaker) is still in the building and involded in football decisions, i don't expect anything different. jed said paraag's gonna lead the search from the new GM. oh joy. we need football people -- not a stanford MBA math whiz -- to bring in football people.

now you see why i was so negative on here about tomsula getting hired over gase and mcdaniels, despite some of the perma-positives rationalizing the decision.

tomsula and baalke should've been fired in tandem last year. could've avoided the problem of misalignment between the coach/GM kinship.

also, LOL @ jeff garcia soliciting his candidacy to jed on twitter.

and he said paraag will be in the room for the interviews. wtf. wasn't paraag removed last year from the football side of the business and banished to overseeing that MLS team?

where's al guido?

i like how jed says he stays consulting with eddie. ain't a consigliere alive who would sign-off on anything he's done.

i will say that the GM candidates look appealing so far. if you we go with one of the packers execs + kyle shanahan, we get the WCO pedigree.

again, though... can the Lucky Sperm and his business bros stay outta the way and be PATIENT during a re-build? can he honestly make that a selling point for candidates for either job? 'cause he's not gonna get the pick of the litter again (chip vs. hue jax last year) if he needs to take credit for everything per usual.

You know Kape had more TD passes than Alex Smith this year?

He was good in the 2nd half of the season, and I would imagine with better wr's he would have performed better.

I mean, Connor Cook and Matt Moore are starting playoff games this weekend, so Kap should be able to be a backup somewhere at least. He can defbstart for a few teams as well.

However, he has external baggage now so we'll see.

he was the 2nd-highest rated passer in the 1st half, but he had like 45% completions in the 2nd half. guys were wide open a lot of times too.

next season. Or even a multiyear deal with guaranteed money. Not even the Jets. Yes, he played better in the second half, but he wasn't blowing doors off of hinges. His smartest move is probably to stick it out with the Niners for another year. Otherwise he's going to be playing as a back-up somewhere for a lot less money.

I'd definitely like to see who we draft and if there's someone out there via FA that we might take a flier on before we waive Kaep. I think any talk about "We need to wipe the slate completely clean and get rid of him NOW" is premature. Reminds me too much of the '03 off-season.

From Kaep's perspective tho, we're still the best option. Certainly from a money stand-point. Most likely from a PT stand-point as well.

Heard somewhere that York wants to get Caserio and Josh McDaniels. I could see them trading down for multiple picks and using one of those picks to deal for a QB.

Especially at the Patriots asking price.

We have the second overall pick, and a lot of big needs. So, as said above, we need to use that pick to draft the proverbial can't miss home-run hitter that's available there. Trading down for multiple picks and then converting a first and a fourth for Garoppolo would be asking for continued mediocrity. I'd rather draft a 3rd rounder and let him develop.

In response to Reply # 15

I was thinking we'd get a second rounder and maybe another later pick, at best.

But I don't disagree overall. Especially given the state of the team, there's no reason to rush things. The whole offense needs work so just get a stop gap to hold down the QB spot until whoever you draft is ready. (And if you whiff on the pick, you can always try to trade/sign a vet QB once you get the rest of the offense set up.)

A second and fifth I could see, especially since the Niners' second rounder is essentially a cheaper first round pick. But again, we've got so many damn holes we'd likely be besting served using the second rounder to fill one of them as well.

although we got high double digits of cap room, i'm never a fan of trading for *the guy who stepped in for a HOF'er and won a few games* either.

i think kap's finished here, but i don't wanna make a reach pick for a QB in the draft either.

there's no point trading away top picks for a jimmy g when there's so many holes on this team, there's no way he could flourish here anyway.

i wouldn't be mad at taking deshaun watson @ #2.

don't trust QB's from notre dame, and trubisky is probably going to cleveland.

"Despite the widespread popular belief that the 49ers are currently the most dysfunctional team in football, the thinking in league circles is that, with some tweaks, the G.M. and coaching jobs could be desirable. The impediment to attracting their preferred candidates isn’t owner Jed York; apparently, it’s Chief Strategy Officer and EVP of Football Operations Paraag Marathe."

...

"Put simply, Marathe has influence, along with the ear of ownership. He’s been there for 16 years, and he has transcended the bubble of accountability in which coaches and General Managers reside. And that’s precisely the kind of dynamic coaches and General Managers try to avoid.

"Shanahan is embracing it because, as his final package will demonstrate, he leveraged the team’s desperation to his full advantage. Moving forward, however, it’s an elephant in the room that may be serving as an oversized anchor."

look, he should've run to set up the FG to go up by 11, but ryan can't take a back-breaking sack there either. shared culpability if you ask me.

re: lynch @ GM, admittedly i threw my arms up with eyes rolling about a guy with zero front-office experience, coming into the run draft for the worst roster in the league.

i will say that adam peters and his resume seems like a good hire, though, if you're gonna have an underboss to lynch.

the most important thing in all this is jed and paraag staying outta the way obviously.

i'm fine with garcon getting a front-loaded contract.

the one (well, only) good thing paraag does well is contracts and manage the cap. i don't think he's ever had a bad contract on the books. he basically hustled kaepernick on his deal.

key losses
-phil dawson
-torrey smith
-anotine bethea

additions
-pierre garcon
-marquise goodwin
-robbie gould
-brian hoyer
-logan paulsen
-kyle juice check (i'm going to have to get used to spelling his name)
-malcolm smith

thoughts
-can't really complian, they're obv aggressively pursuing players that fit areas of need (then again, what area is not of need)
-mike glennon's contract sure makes the brian hoyer signing a decent one
-now i do hope we draft and groom a future qb rather than holding out for cousins next year
-did we need another TE esp since juice check can prob play some in that position too?
-btw that juice check signing is pretty dope

sounds like he picked up where donte whitner left off as a hell of a leader in the locker room. but time to move on.

given that baalke couldn't evaluate WR talent for shit, i'm just glad to a have proven at the position. and his contract doesn't hurt us. my guess is we take a wideout in the first few rounds anyway.

as discussed in the FA thread, solid pickup to complement bowman, and as you said, ray ray, as uncertainties. and smith can play inside or outside in saleh's 4-3.

i'm not feeling the whole "wait for cousins in '2018" stuff either. what if he sucks or gets hurt next season?

give us a kid shanny can groom. i'm warming up to deshaun watson @ #2, if the war room's going QB first.

>-did we need another TE esp since juice check can prob play
>some in that position too?
i don't understand that one really. vance and celek are fine. if vance could cut down the drops, he's pretty good. he was like top 3 in yards per catch for starting TE's.

>-btw that juice check signing is pretty dope

wait, we signed matt barkley too? LOL

from what i've heard, jonathan allen is the 2nd most talented guy on the board and allen, armstead, buckner would be a hell of a d line. i think the addition of hoyer allows us to sit back a bit and wait for a qb in round 2 or later.

Sure, we overpaid some of these guys, but that's what gonna have to do until we get right. And yeah, we're filling our (many) needs.

>-now i do hope we draft and groom a future qb rather than

Draft a QB in the 3rd or 4th at least regardless. St. Walsh always used to say that you should draft a QB **every** year at some point. Plus, holding out for a year for Cousins seems silly, because zero is promised.

Dwight Clark, who authored the most iconic play in San Francisco 49ers history, announced on Sunday he has been diagnosed with ALS.

Clark turned 60 in January. He played nine NFL seasons, all with the 49ers, from 1979 to ’87.

According to the ALS Association, approximately 6,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disorder each year and an estimated 20,000 may be living with ALS in the U.S. at any given time.

would y'all want him? we're still $76MM under the cap. he's due $11MM a season for the remaining two on his contract.

and... saleh's implementing seattle's scheme on defense.

i don't know if schneider trades him intra-division, tho.

and... this draft is deep @ corner. most of the mocks have four corners going in the 1st round.

However, given the Tramaine Brock situation below, might not be awful to give him a look. Or spend a later draft pick on a CB.

First three picks went a long way to rebuilding our defense. Drafting Beathard in the 3rd was a solid move; it allows the guy to develop for a few years, will we use Hoyer this year and maybe sign Cousins next year, or possibly draft an even more promising QB in 2018. Buzz is good on Williams and Kittle (who could end up a FB). Not a bad haul for Lynch and Shanny's first time out.

And for all the shit we give Parag, dude apparently did his thing this time around, and was instrumental in fleecing the Bears.

How much credit does Baalke even get at this point? Seems like he deserves more blame.

Also, with coaching/scheme changes, draft and FA moves, this team is going to look a lot different.

Still a tough schedule.

so on paper it seemed like a reach. but shanny must've seen something he liked. we'll see.

foster could be a great pick @ ILB, considering bowman and armstrong are coming off season-enders. (personally i think bowman's extremely damaged goods at this point.)

re: paraag, i no doubt cringed when they showed him and jed/john in the war room, high fiving and all. "aww wtf are they all doing there? still meddling???" it looks like paraag's "draft charts" paid off, though.

pundit consensus seems to be an "A-" draft grade.

looks like the team picked up jimmie ward's option for 2018 and are signing a couple vet o-linemen too, so that's good.

it already seems like night and day between lynch's crew and baalke in being proactive.

Why did he opt out and not try to renegotiate with the team? Did he expect to get more suitors? Why would he not want to be with the team that visibly and financially supported him during his protest?

Did he expect that a new coach/regime would offload him anyway? I just always thought that the best place for him to be was in San Fran, all things considered.

kap was gonna get cut anyway if he hadn't opted out.

the beat writers wrote a bunch of articles with quotes from lynch saying they were moving on, after shanny and lynch mad met with kap in santa clara. lynch gave a lil lip service saying they'd "keep the door open"... but naw.

though kap won the team's len eshmont award --- essentially proving he wasn't a "locker room distraction" --- i think privately the yorks as owners weren't willing to be in that kind of spotlight again versus Murica for another season.

He renegotiated his contract and left money on the table for the express purpose of being able to opt out. During the season he announced he was going to opt out. Then he did, and the Niners signed a bunch of QBs almost immediately.

It seems like he thought that getting his new agent to announce that he wouldn't kneel anymore would be enough for other teams to have interest in him. He just didn't count on how racist/afraid the other NFL owners are.

This morning LeBatard said he's become the patron saint of bad QBs, since all these teams are signing mediocre losers over him.

i liked what i saw w/ kittle so looks like we're going w/ the young guys at TE. that said, we also have juice check (eventually i'll learn how to spell his name) who basically fits the same role. so i don't think an experienced TE was especially crucial.

guy looks like a beast. comparisons to willis are way too premature, willis came out a polished tackling machine right off the bat. foster on the other hand is just a fucking bullet train. it'll be fun to watch.

also, is it me or is eric reid playing his ass off right now?

Him and a healthy Bowman look great. Add in a healthy read and a young aggressive D Line. We will be a much better D than last year.

but you know what? with the right QB who can go through his reads and not just 100 mph it in tight windows - Vance can do just fine. He simply didn't feel comfortable catching Kap's one note fastballs

He looked much more comfortable with Gabbert last season. Like the TE we expected when we drafted him.

WIth Big Ben I expect Vance to be a solid TE for you guys

Also, we didn't necessarily trade him for poor play. We just have some young TE's on the roster who are showing promise.

3rd highest YPC last year for TE's, but...

he's got the highest rate of drops for TE's over the 4 years he's been in the league. some of it's been on the qb play (kap's high heat on 4-yard curl route), some of it not (i specifically remember two of gabbert's INT's hitting vance right in the hands first).

-suprised kerley got cut but between goodwin, trent taylor, and bolden, kerley became expendable. he was one of the few bright spots last year. i hope he gets picked up by a good team.

-did the joe williams injury just come out of nowhere?

-i forgot how long quinton dial has been on the team.

-looks like ward may still be hurt for the opener. good opportunity for tartt but this sucks as there was a lot of faith put on ward this year.

yeah this one was weird. thought kerley had a brighter future here as a #2 or 3 after lynch had signed him to that extension. the good thing about the offense is that it seems like you can plug and play different guys at wideout w/out any noticeable drop off... 'cause guys are relatively wide open.

really excited about goodwin. dude can just burn.

>
>-did the joe williams injury just come out of nowhere?

i saw the headline was like "what??? alrighty then." if hyde misses his usual few games, i think we're fine with mostert and yoooooooos-check picking up the slack.

they way they're using the FB has mike shanny '92-'94 fingerprints written all over it.

>
>-i forgot how long quinton dial has been on the team.

quinton's on on his way. quinton's on his way. quinton's on his way to another team and that's okaaaaay. and that's okaaay.

>-looks like ward may still be hurt for the opener. good

tartt seems to have good range, so we'll see.

reid is whom i got my eye on. he basically sucked after the big concussion last year, but in the preseason he looked good in coverage and was blowin dudes up.

time for the regular season thread i guess.

can we make this the offseason for 2018 thread? lol.

i kid...partially. i'll be honest, i naively fell to a lot of the high praise for the team in the offseason. this game brought be down to earth. i think at the end of the year, we'll look back and see a lot of improvement but this was definitely an eye opener as to how much work we need on our offense.

-hyde looked better than any point in the preseason. at one point, you could tell they REALLY wanted to reward him w/ a td, going to him 3x straight in the red zone. had they not been down by so much at the end, i think his numbers would have told a better story.
-hoyer is what we thought he was. he'll have these games and he'll have some solid ones. there's a reason why he's been given a chance by so many teams but also been cut by just as many.
-jeez foster looked good for the short time he was there didn't he? i have a feeling we'll have to get used to a lot of highs and lows w/ this guy but i sure hope he stays healthy.
-i have to applaud shanahan for going on 4th and 1 4 times. he admitted he wanted to give the crowd something to cheer for...shit, coach gives you a chance, at a certain point, it's up to the players to deliver.
-watching the empty stadium is so pathetic. i was a season ticket holder in the nolan/singletary era and it was never that empty...not even in our 2 win season.

anyway, that defense. on the field for 80 plays.

1. defense - looked good, can't really ask for much more...maybe secure a few more of those close interceptions but for a unit that hasn't played much together, they did well.

2. safeties - the game started w/ big plays by reid, then tartt, then ward. ward came out like he was WAITING all off season to hit someone. i sure hope reid is ok because i want to see what these guys can do as a full unit.

3. bowman - oh hello old man (lead team in tackles).

4. special teams - got some good returns by bolden.

5. marquis goodwin - dude is REALLY fast.................at dropping balls.

After a horrible start, that ended up being quite the game. Robbie Gould's gotta be kicking himself (see what I did there?) after we could have had a tied game had he not missed an extra point. Gurley was a scoring machine but we saw good games from Hyde and Garcon. Hoyer's numbers will show that he had a decent game but he made some big mistakes (interception, missed chances). Marquis Goodwin finally caught a long ball. I want to see more of Trent Taylor.

Two very bad injuries have caught up with him. He can still find holes, but he's got very little lateral movement anymore. And with Reuben Foster back, it was questionable if he was even going to start.

Word is they tried to trade him, but he didn't like the team that the were going to trade him to, so they just released him instead. That suggests that they weren't going to get much for him anyway.

It sucks, because he could have ended up the second best defensive player the Niners ever had and would have been a Hall Of Famer, but those injuries fucked his career. It also sucks that now the only remnant of those three glory years is Joe Stalley. But it happens.

i saw the schefter note earlier that bow was being shopped around. i mean, he's obviously lost a couple steps... and ray ray's been ballin and the youngsta's coming back this week... so i wasn't surprised after taking a couple deep breaths and looking at it holistically.

sure, my jaw dropped a bit at his outright release.

but he wanted it.. apparently.

i guess he didn't like whatever team he was gonna to out of the 31 that were contacted. so now he's got way more options.

belichick on line 1?

I didn't see a season post, so i will post some thoughts here.

Is soloman thomas good? We have drafted d-line 3 years in a row, hope it works out.

Looks like we are playing a lot of rookies and locking up a top 3 pick, plus $90 mil in cap space. To early to look ahead at some free agents? We need a lot of help in a lot of different places.

the penalties are killing me. seems a like a ton 3rd down conversions we've allowed this year have been as a result of it.

coaches need to clean that up. at someone point shanny's gonna have to hire an o-coordinator and delegate.

but yay, at least marquis goodwin got to trade jerseys with dez bryant after the game! yay.

it looks like the nosedive has stabilized a bit.

why wait until garapollo had become a free agent after this season and overpay for him?

a 2nd rounder is fine. not mad at the trade.

as an aside and in hindsight, this year's first round is looking like a flop by trading back/passing on d-watson...and drafting thomas and foster.

lol, i have to laugh at how extreme this season has been. from "i can't believe i'm watching this!" (sad face) to "i can't believe i'm watching this!" (happy happy face).

going into next season...
-how good is jimmy g gonna be w/ a full offseason learning the playbook?
-do we keep the same wr's? all of a sudden, that position isn't so dire w/ garcon coming back and god damn, goodwin was a dirty hit short of 1k yards.
-hyde seems like he wants to come back and i think a 1-2 punch w/ breida panned out really well.
-will reuben foster ever stay out of the injury tent? lol

I imagine he can only improve. A few suspect picks were thrown but overall, tremendous given the circumstances. Now can he do it starting the season with high expectations?

Would like to add a FA. Martavis? Allen Rob? I don't know shit about college prospects.

Ehh. I trust shanny with the offense, and rb's too. Won't be mad if hyde chases money in FA
