Without spoiling too much, I'll say I was okay with this ep. The season-long arc they're setting up looks like it could have some legs, at least moreso than Dexter vs The Motivational Speaker did last year. Also, Deb was surprisingly less annoying.

It's like they said, "hey, we have a bunch of characters people are familiar with. How about we do something with them besides tossing off dumb jokes and moving the plot along."
Every character in this episode is a piece that will potentially be used when the shit goes down towards the end of the season - as this show does.

I'm excited to see how it all plays out - and we still have the mighty Mos Def/Yasiin to come.

I have a 400 year old chip on my shoulder.

I like the Dexter vs God/Religion angle being set up here.
Hopefully the entire season lives up to the promising set-up.

Did anyone get an "old-school" (ie. Season 1/2) feel to parts
of this episode?

- I like how they recognized that for the past 3 seasons they all started REALLY slowly and started to burn in the 3rd or 4th episode. This one started out quickyl and nicely too.

- This is the FIRST time in the entire show where you see Dexter truly try to blend in. Not sort of be in the same space as the other people in and around his life. He was making an effort to not just be the weird dude at the party, but be apart of the party. That was good.

- The chick he got domed off by was love

- i really like the religion aspect to this season, you figure there's only so much killing that can be going on before we recognize that there has to be some sort of a higher power and someone to answer to for all this. Faith is a great angle.

- Colin Hanks looks to be a good adversary this season, James Edward Almos as the older God will be strong.

- All in all I like where it's headed.

I've always defended this show but I thought that shit sucked. The writing seemed extra lazy and even the acting was sub par. The camera work focusing in on Dex's face at the reunion was weird too.

As I said I've been a fan of this show from jump.... but that looked like a show bored with itself on it's last legs.

I thought it was quite dull. Every first episode always seemed to have an "Oh shit!" moment and that one didn't. I've been watching all along so I'll ride til the end but this season so far hasn't hooked me or have me looking forward to episodes.

They have to have Deb catch Dexter next season and end it.

... He could end up being the saving grace of this season if it ends up being a snooze like last year.

Also: In the series recap from the first episode, did anyone else notice that Rita wasn't shown once? Not even her lifeless body from the end of S4. I recall reports that she was pretty pissed about being killed off the show. Did that have anything to do with the producers essentially erasing her from the show's history?

Meh. I'm glad I gave up on the show when Doakes died. Given that she's dead and he's a single parent, how do they explain supervision of the kids? He gave them away? Is he making that much money to afford 24/7 babysitting? Him balancing being a parent with his dark actions would make for an interesting show. How many seasons have aired since Rita was murdered? I downloaded and watched the season with the Trinity murders and gave up because the show became too repetiive to me. Sorry for badering you with questions.

... they made a big-ish deal about the hiring of the nanny, but then she ended up not factoring into the season at all. Now he's watched by Batista's sister, who moved into the apartment next door to Dexter's.

The other two kids split time with their grandparents IIRC, though their names haven't even been spoken once yet on this season.

Just curious, you ever read any of the books for Dexter? I read the first three and had to give up because the villains were just too moronic for me to continue on. Believe it or not, the show is actually better than the books, at least the first three I read.

I would actually welcome any kind of plot contrivance that brings Doakes back. I miss him. I keep hoping he's going to show up and kill Ghost Harry and replace him as Dexter's conscience.

As far as the whole religion theme of this season, this could go either way. We could get a nice little added dimension to our favorite murderer, or some ham-fisted "you gotta believe in *something*" shlockiness.

When Dex is looking up the dude's history... both Kenny as a child and his mom have 1970s hairdos. This cat is like 70, he would have grown up in the 1940s and 50s, yet his hair looks like young Dexter's hair and his mom has like Farrah feathers.

I really don't understand why they did that lol

I don't know if I missed something but that seemed like a lucky guess. I suppose he could've gone to several other retirement homes before landing at that one, but I don't think that was ever implied.

Still, a decent episode, with a pretty cool final scene. I'm starting to believe the theory that Olmos is a figment of Hanks' imagination. We're gonna need more Mos as the season goes on, though.

Why did I get stuck n that too? I paused the show to pick his birth year off the report they showed... like you I was bothered by the idea a kid was supposed to have hair like that in the late 40s/early 50s lol

she is "actin like a man"
she is a woman w/a strong father figure
little to no influence by her bio mother
& an older brother

they flipped the usual script
girl meets boy
girl has sex w/boy
girl falls for boy & wants happily ever after

if any guy had had sex w/a woman who'd caught feelings & detracted frum *the plan* & summarily dumped her
it wouldn't be an issue

i think that ppl place deb's "hotness" over who she really is
she may look like a good time
she has this great body
but she's as emotionally stunted as dexter
her lack of female influence is glaring
she isn't even connectin her sensuality to her choices to have sex or her partners

... I'm enjoying what they're doing with the supporting characters, (Quinn and Batista smoking weed in the Trans Am then later grubbing hard on a bag of chips was great) and I'm intrigued to see how Brother Sam figures into the overall story arc (and Mos was really, really good again this week). That last scene with the trip-wire crucifixion and locusts was pretty awesome, too.

In general, this season is already infinitely better than the last one. It's funny: I felt like "Breaking Bad" made "Dexter" more difficult to enjoy, but "Walking Dead" is actually making "Dexter" look way better by comparison.

Episode 4 really stepped things up. I'm one of the few
that liked season 5 but I agree it wasn't on par with
seasons 1,2 and 4 (I liked it slightly better than 3
though).

Anyway, like I mentioned in an earlier post, every
season of Dexter seems to start slow and none of them
really hit their stride until the 4th or 5th episode.
With that said, it looks like a really good stride!

... All I know is of the two weeks I've watched a new "Walking Dead" and then directly watched a new "Dexter," I've been WAY more satisfied with "Dexter." A month ago, when "Breaking Bad" was the show preceding it, I found it hard to muster up any enthusiasm for "Dexter."

I'm mostly joking when I say "Walking Dead" is actually making "Dexter" seem better -- "Dexter" just happened to pick up these last two weeks -- but in a side-by-side comparison of the concurrent seasons, "Dexter" is winning.

... They haven't shown him directly interacting with anyone outside Hanks' character yet. Sure, Hanks woke up to find the girl tied up, but Hanks could've done that off-screen then gone back to sleep or something. Obviously he was alive at some point, but he could've mentored Hanks before dying and he is just imagining him a la Dex-Harry.

They said he went underground three years ago when the posts stopped. I think colin hanks killed him back then, in some religious ceremony, with ejo's consent (possibly even was his idea).

The diner scene kinda cemented for me that ejo isn't there for any one else, and him watching them fuck sealed it.

Spoiler Alert:

The intestine is umpteen miles long right? I thought it was hilarious how Dexter found the clue after his first incision in the exact spot it was.

Stuff like that about Dexter makes me laugh. How everything falls in perfectly in an almost peachy kind of way. I don't know if they do this on purpose to be cheeky but it works to the advantage of the show which is soap operaesque in the best of ways.

Like in the begining homie would only kill those that fell outside of the system or the system failed to put them away so there would never be justice for them.

Now all of a sudden he doesn't even allow them to get to the system he's trying to kill them before the police solve the case.

It just seems to go against the whole code of Harry thing.

hes been going after killers sought by the police and interfering in their investigations since the beginning of the show- Ice Truck Killer, Trinity killer, etc. This season is no different.

His code was always to kill bad people deserving of death- nothing to do with the judicial system and its flaws.

The Ice Truck killer was different because he came after him.

Trinity and the Tooth Fairy had been at large for like 30 years or some shit like that.

Almost all of the kills in the first couple of seasons (big bad of every season notwithstanding) were guys who had done horrible shit and slipped through the system.

Dexter had to bring them to justice or at least that's what I remmeber.

there was a litany of ppl who were "enjoyin life" after havin had been {prematurely} released frum jail
but also ppl who'd escaped detection
i think there was the 1 guy who was a child killer
& now was a family man

but i think the main goal was to preclude them frum committin their same crimes & to never kill an "innocent" person

i mean technically
some of his kills *could* have been prosecuted
like the female officer who murder'd her husband & child
but w/dex it's more about satisfyin his urge to kill
so accordin to the code he can only kill those deservin of it
regardless of their ability to be jailed w/in the system

he said in the first episode, losing Rita and rebounding from that (being outkilled by a killer and one had he killed, or let die when he first had the chance, wouldn't have had his family life torn apart) made him stronger and better. so he's absolutely in crime prevention mode. but this wasn't the beginning of that. even last season when he killed the animal control dude, i don't think that guy had a record first even though he was online doing some sick shit.

the point was never to wait for the system to get a shot, the failure of the system essentially just put people on his radar, then he was able to prove with certainty that they were guilty. harry's code was always to satisfy his bloodlust by finding people who were absolutely culpable and deserving of death. because even some years back, it was the beginning of a season, he killed this noted community figure who was secretly sexually abusing young boys. dude never had a CHARGE thrown his way. i think maybe you're focusing on it more now but dexter was always putting in work outside of the courtroom.

It's moving slowly, Deb sux and I'd love to see her character take a long walk off of Dex's boat into the gulfstream.

- Travis and professor are boring, and not very captivating.

- Mos held his shit down, but there's not much that could save the shit at the end.

- The twist at the end wasn't surpring it just was.

... with the appearance of the Ice Truck Killer taking over as Dexter's conscience. It was cool to see him attempting to fight his urge to kill in that last scene (I've always thought an interesting arc for a season would be Dexter attempting to quell his "dark passenger" and NOT kill anyone), though the kid laughing about getting away with Sam's death made his decision easy. I am bummed they killed Mos off, I liked his character and he did a great job in the role.

I don't know if I'm in the minority on this but I'm enjoying this season so far after being bored out of my mind last season. Although if it all wraps up in the usual "Dexter" fashion -- everything ending up perfectly for Dexter, no one suspicious of him -- I'm going to be disappointed. If the show is going to stay on for another few seasons, they need to do SOMETHING to shake up the formula going into Season 7.

They tried so hard to convince us that Rita was the exception to his not giving a shit rule. She was fucking slaughtered with his newborn sitting there.

This has nothing to do with the current season...it just kinda jumped out at me out of nowhere.

with everything being dredged up it sounds like he should be revisiting his feeling about that situation again.

Then again, I remember reading that they couldnt really even mention her name after she left, but I have no idea how an actor who isn't even on the show would have that kind of power.

In response to Reply # 99

Mos opened his mind for the first time to the idea and possibility of his "Dark Passenger" being able to be left behind, and with Mos' death it was obvious Dexter was broken up about it not as much because he was losing a loved one but because he wouldn't have anyone to further explore that idea...

Rita on the other hand seemed like a perfect cover up to make him seem more "normal" to other people, nothing more nothing less.

>in orlando
the kids didn't want to be with him, especially astor and dexter never adopted them. plus his lifestyle/work life as a single father with THREE kids was gonna be a rough sell anyway

>and leaves harrison with a girl day and night.
>barely sees him.
he sees him plenty, he just has a JOB, and business to take care of

>like, how is dexter not going through a crisis of personal
>faith over THAT shit?
he never believed in it before. how would he have believed in it after?

like someone else said, sam saw him for who he was, rita saw him for who she wanted him to be. there is a different closeness when you don't have to pretend with someone. also, the fact that sam wasn't someone who appropriated his passenger or appealed to it (lila, miguel prado, loomis till she got her proper revenge). he's the only person who without judging and with no self-interest, told him he saw it but that it didn't have to be all of who he was. of COURSE that hurts. it made him think that he might be doomed to have the passenger forever, despite having a young life with plenty of light that he has to care for.

his therapy is killing bad guys. he's also not the type to talk about his feelings.

that was a weird relationship they had, him and Rita. it took him a LONG time to warm up to her. didn't he originally start seeing her b/c he wanted to appear to/lead a "normal life"? of course he ended up really caring about her in the end, but he wasn't totally himself around her. i think he really fell Lumen last season b/c she understood his dark passenger. maybe its stranger that he doesn't think about/mention either of these women. hopefully he does. his flashbacks, like to his childhood, really added richness to the show.

he DEFINITELY fucked up by not killing travis, but he was convincing when saying the professor (real or imagined) was calling the shots. it WILL cost him as we saw a preview of how he gets got later.

HOWEVER, travis will ultimately not do him in, as he's been battling with geller and will continue to do so, will likely see similarities between himself and dexter, and won't be able to do it. he already done let a chick live.

i'm not sure how trinity's son comes into play, he could perhaps be the one to save dexter as payback for saving him from his father.

miami metro got enough of their own problems, dexter really ain't doing shit to be on their radar this year.

ALTHOUGH I'd like to know how he could drown a nigga on the beach then take him elsewhere to bag him up and chop him up unseen.

This pains me to say it, but the scene between Quinn and Deb might've been the best and more organic scene in the entire show.

- Please someone either expose or kill laguerta, I hate her character and I need her off my tv. - Sidebar, PLEASE do not ever put Deb in uniform ever again. Please and thank you

- I get it, the battle between light and darkness, we had to go all the way out to Nebraska to kill a weed growing extortionist to find that out? Naw i'm good.

- trinity's son's whole plot line was stupid.

- Burn this episode I don't ever want to see it again.

... Dexter truly exploring the darkest parts of his "Dark Passenger" could've been interesting, but they overdid it with the brother (I'm really sick of that device overall -- as I've said before, I keep hoping Doakes will reappear and kill off the ghost of Harry) and as someone else pointed out, it felt like the writers almost regretted going down that path to begin with.

I really felt myself missing Mos/Brother Sam in this episode. I was really hoping he'd stay alive at least until the season finale, because he truly brought something fresh to the show. Now I feel like this is going to end like every other "Dexter" season.

... First there was last week's debacle, then this episode, which felt three hours long. They've telegraphed the whole "Travis-is-Gellar" thing so obviously at this point that the eventual "twist" isn't going to be shocking at all (I'd be more shocked if Gellar turned out to be alive). I really didn't think losing Brother Sam would have that big of an impact on the season, but his arrival rejuvenated my interest in the season after a lame first episode, and the season appears to be falling off completely with him gone. He got killed off WAY too soon.

And with news that the show has been renewed for two more seasons (and possibly even more), that means this season is guaranteed not to set any sort of series finale in motion. Ugh.

... In truth, "Dexter" is a show I feel -- based on the goodwill generated by its first four seasons, which were awesome -- can shift and become "good" again at any moment. And unlike last season, which I spent waiting to be enthralled and never was, I was enjoying this season up until the last two episodes. And because I've watched every season thus far, I'm going to stick with it because, good or bad, I want to see how it all ends...even if it keeps going for another six years.

And this isn't "overanalysis." It's critical thinking.

I just accept that the formula that makes the show will
always prevent it from becoming new and fresh again.
I really don't believe the "quality" has changed much
at all. It just appears that there has been a change in
quality because the show's formula stays the same. I
agree with everyone who says they need to bring the
series to an end soon. I'm still enjoying the show as
it is, but dragging the series too long will definitely
kill how people rate the show's overall quality.

the average TV watcher ain't an overzealous, overcritical fanboy.

not saying that you are, but i'm saying this "legacy" argument only matters in those circles.

i like the show and want it to last as long as the writers/producers want to express themselves. maybe that's because i'm an artist? i just balk at the idea of anyone suggesting that someone's artistic expression "needs to end"...not to mention, the people who feed their families while working and collecting a salary from the production of the show

i mean it's for us but it ain't for us, nahmean? who are any of us as viewers to decide when it should end?

Of course I have no right to impose my artistic vision,
but I do have a right to articulate my opinion of what
I'd like to see. Whichever direction the writers decide
to go with it, I've clearly expressed that I'm dedicated
to staying with the show. Critically, however, I will
have to keep adjusting my expectations.

some here seem so jaded. i mean, this show is no different than other successful shows and they've gone many more seasons than Dexter. its a story, a formula that works and that appeals to a (growing) audience. sure, some of the plots seem repetitive but I enjoy this show for being what it is.

I think your argument is extremely porous and caters a bit too much to self-indulgent artistic cliches.

One doesn't have to be an artist to recognize when an artistic expression has run its course or has gone off the rails. In fact, i would counter-argue that the audience is better suited to recognize this than the artist is.

I'm happy when creative people are able to feed their families through their work, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the work they're producing is top-notch.

TV *is* produced for an audience and the television audience DOES routinely decide when a show is to end. By not watching it. That's why shows get cancelled. Because the audience decides that they're not feeling them (anymore).

Good for them, though... let them cook.

tell any writer or director that their work isn't art and see how they respond.

i get the rest of what you're saying but i don't agree with this part:

It's the creative expression of a committee, even if there is functionally a primary creator directing the work of the committee.

Things are different in the UK, though.

>tell any writer or director that their work isn't art and see
>how they respond.

Many writers and directors actually feel this way.

Barry Sonnenfeld doesn't watch movies in his free time. He's not a reverent Scorsese-esque film nerd... He doesn't have much personal interest in film because for him, making movies is a job. A job he does well, but not one he has any romantic notions about.

David Mamet rejects the description of himself as an artist and prefers to view himself as an artisan, like a carpenter or a sign painter.

When I studied Screenwriting in school, every prof I ever had (including produced and Oscar-winning scenarists) discouraged us from thinking of our work as "Art" or ourselves as "Artists" because the people who think that way are the ones who never make it in the business. We were taught that the screenwriter was more of a technician.

>i get the rest of what you're saying but i don't agree with
>this part:
>
>"the audience is better suited to recognize this than the

When you create, you are often too close to your creation to completely gauge how an audience will respond to it.

If you are, say, a standup comedian, you get up on the stage and tell jokes for maybe 10 minutes.

For all we know, you might have 100 minutes worth of jokes, but when 10 minutes have passed and the audience is no longer laughing... then you've done enough. If you wanna tell 90 more minutes worth of jokes, you can go do it in your bedroom. But the reason you are doing it publicly is because you WANT to appeal to an audience... often an audience that *paid* to be entertained by you.

Once the audience indicates that they're no longer finding you entertaining, it's your time to get off the stage... whether you've finished "expressing yourself" or not. Because if you stay on too long, you risk erasing the goodwill the audience originally had toward you.

good examples, however i'm sure there are similar examples of famous writers/directors who do see themselves as artists. it's subjective, and should be.

and this is what's kind of sad: there are no absolutes. like i said above, i'm sure there are plenty of directors who made it who DO think of themselves as artists. that sucks that film school professors discourage this. being business-savvy about your art doesn't make you any less of an artist.

yes, i agree with that. to be a success in that business (or in any business) you have to have people like what you do. But that does not have to change how you express yourself. like i pointed out above, you and I may have 2 different ideas of what success means. To some, success means critical acclaim...that their peers say that their art is of a high quality and they are respected. to others, success is millions of dollars. to others success may be a small, but loyal fanbase. all of those people will have a different approach to what they produce based on their idea of success.

Steve Jobs was not driven by what he thought people would like. He was of the opinion that people did not know what they would like and that it was his job to show them what they SHOULD like. He approached the design of Apple products from an artist's perspective. all of those products are an extension of who he was as a person: unfettered, simple, zen-like...all the way down to the fact that the user has no control over the product other than what Jobs allows us.

and with all that narcissism, the products were and are a HUGE success.

so there are degrees to which an artist can take the audience into consideration...it's up to each of us to decide where our measure of success lies on that spectrum

(my apologies if all that i've written is not completely cohesive...this is very stream-of-consciousness and i don't have time to read thru it and edit it lol)

... Although I disagree with Damali's argument that "Dexter" is staying around longer than it should because the writers have a lot to say artistically -- it's sticking around because it's a hugely popular show and Showtime doesn't want it to end yet -- TV is as much an artistic medium as film or anything else. I don't know how you can watch "Breaking Bad," "The Wire," "Mad Men" and, yes, "Dexter," and say television isn't an artform.

but it ain't a Capital-A Art (at the risk of overparsing)

As I've said before, TV is a business that *uses* art to sell soap.

To various degrees.

It's like advertising... sure, there is a lot of creativity that is utilized in the field and even some true artistic genius. But its product is not really Art itself. It uses art to sell something else.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

Obviously, cable offers a lot more artistic latitude than network TV but even then... with all the levels of approval that a TV show has to go through in order to get on air (and then to stay on the air), it's hard to think of it as a "pure" art (if such a thing exists).

But what you said about why Dexter is staying around like 3-5 seasons too long and why most American TV shows overstay their welcome is absolutely the reason why it's often hard to consider TV as a real art. Art makes its statement and exits the stage... it doesn't keep flogging a dead horse just because it's a money machine for some corporation.

You essentially subscribe to the "critic-proof" theory of art, which I find to be self-indulgent and ultimately harmful to art in a number of ways.

As such, we will probably never be able to tread even a modicum of common ground in this discussion.

it's hard to have a discussion... we might as well be speaking different languages.

I can agree with you that it is the artist's prerogative to decide how much or how little the audience matters but I honestly do not believe that this appanage extends to the realm of television.

The medium is by virtue of itself too expensive, too risky, and the apparatus of exhibition is not accessible to most private individuals. And it is dependent upon advertising or subscriptions to remain afloat. It's a medium where the audience is SUPREMELY important... no two ways about it. And what's more, the artist is beholden to bean-counters and stockholders.

It's not like painting where you can create the most deliberately inaccessible work and declare that you don't care if anybody understands or appreciates it. Or even independent film where you can do the same with your own investment.

because all Colin Hanks' character had to do, was put dude in the ground, or tell Dexter where he was at.

Shit's stupid otherwise.

and does Travis even know that he's acting as Gellar? he could have some disassociative disorder which would add another layer to this...him not knowing his dark passenger even exists (or knowing it and being in denial)

1. Matthews was up in some drugged up hooker
When LaGuerta was talking on the phone, my first instinct was Bautista then I just stopped thinking on it. I SHOULD have known it was that fuck ever since LaGuerta got him at the beginning of the season. I'm guessing Quinn is going to somehow sacrifice himself or his career to save Debra, who will not let the case go now.

2. Louis bought that forearm off ebay.
I don't know for sure what the tie-in is, it was funny as hell though right as Louis started crushin, I said to my sister "I wonder if they're ever gonna bring back the blonde chick who first worked for Matsuka" then BOOM the fucking hand appears. Not sure what it all means.

So that scene from the beginning of the season where it showed a "future" clip of Travis getting the drop on Dexter in the woods was just some imagined up type of shit I guess. Weird. Dex is going to have to turn into some super hero to 1) get Travis before the cops 2) save Deb 3) Save Jamie??

Agreed, I'm not even good at guessing plotlines but I figured out that Prof Gellar was dead a few episodes back. It's the same f'ing formula with Dexter every season...he goes up against someone that almost kills him, but doesn't, and Deb almost finds out his other side, but doesnt.

It's still *somewhat* enjoyable to watch but this same formula is what separates Dexter from the great shows on tv, just wish they had better writers. Probably hit their max with the Trinity storyline.

... That season was a flatline all the way through (even when it "picked up" it was really just in comparison to how boring everything was before it). I ultimately didn't care about anything that happened that season. At least this one started out strong, with the strong performance from Mos/Yasiin, it's just totally fizzled since his death. Maybe it'll pick up with these last two episodes, though I don't expect it to.

Worse than not rushing it, they stayed WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too long on the storyline this year. To the point where the show is beyond predictable this season. Nothing they have done has shocked me. It's as if Penn and Teller wrote this season explaining how the prestige is done from start to finish.

This season is so dull and sloppy that I actually miss Lumen.

The way dude just pops into people's homes in broad daylight is bad enough but now dude s making calls to 911 and not even disguising his voice.

I could let those type of things go if the story was good... but it's a hot mess too.

I'll believe it when I see it but if this is true it could redeem the season for me, and if the finale storyline is truly stretched over two seasons that could renew my interest in the show.

http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/12/02/dexter-series-end-game/

'Dexter' scoop: Series endgame begins this season
by James Hibberd

When Showtime recently renewed Dexter for two more seasons, fans wondered: Is this the beginning of the end for the acclaimed serial killer drama?

Though plans could still change, Showtime entertainment president David Nevins tells EW the working assumption is indeed that Dexter will conclude in the eighth season. Moreover, the creative endgame starts sooner than you think — the remaining episodes of the current sixth season will set into motion events that will resonate through the remainder of the series.

“Coming back for two more years gives us clarity about how and when it will go out,” Nevins said at Showtime’s annual holiday party in Los Angeles on Thursday night. “There’s things that are going to happen that will set up a very clear endgame that will take two seasons to tell. You have got to be there for the last two episodes.”

Nevins pointed to NBC’s Friday Night Lights, which he developed and produced while running Imagine Entertainment, and how being given an end date allowed showrunner Jason Katims to craft a strong final act. “Having that definitiveness always helps,” Nevins said. “We were able to plot very clearly. It’s rare to have that degree of certainty.”

Asked if Dexter will therefore absolutely conclude in the eighth season, Nevins added, “I’m never going to say ‘never,’ but everybody is operating under that assumption. Things could take a turn creatively where they come to us and say they need more time.”

Meanwhile guests at the party sang the praises for Nevins’ freshman drama Homeland, which some consider the best new drama series of the fall. Nevins said he’s “excited and a little bit anxious” about the conclusion of the intense show’s first season. “It’s emotionally wrenching to the nth degree,” he said.

Some Dexter fans have been less enthusiastic about the show’s current storylines. But it sounds like the remaining hours of the hit drama this season — and Homeland as well — are not to be missed.

she needs to get back with quinn.

i was hoping that dexter wouldve taken care of travis marshall but of course, something happens just as he's about to take him down.

the finale should be pretty good. i wonder what that louis green is trying to do with sending that ice truck killer hand to dexter.

i dont think this will be resolved this season, but la guerta...i really want deb to take her down. she's such a snake.

This show is hilarious in the fact that Dexter is basically invincible and nothing can go wrong, and if it does.. he will shrug it off with a stroke of luck/brilliance that is best described as omnipotent.

let's play ping pong ■

it and shit herself or something.

... As I posted earlier, the writers hinted these final two episodes will start the ball rolling toward the series finale. I didn't see anything suggesting that in last week's episode, so we'll see what happens here, but yeah, there's no way Harrison gets killed, so unless another side character gets offed, the only half-satisfying "shock" ending would be Deb coming to the realization of who her brother truly is. They could easily stretch the fallout from that over two seasons if they wanted to.

I never said anything about the phone... my problem was with dude just calling up and giving them the info in his regular voice. Just about anyone in Miami Metro would know his voice right off. But in the world of Dexter nobody will ever ask to hear the 911 call that came in regarding the big case they are trying to break *rolls eyes*

here's why you're being a stupid crack ho

-deb is the first person to see a fucking note written to the dead hooker?

-quinn fucks a material witness in their huge homicide investigation and continues to go into drunken binges with impunity?

-a fucking key piece of evidence in a major case is stolen, sold, bought, and returned with only matsuka knowing about it??

shut entirely the fuck up with your selective nitpicking about where there are "holes" or "problems"

you dipshits pick and choose where to have to your period over a scene that doesn't make your pussy purr. dry that shit up nancyboy.

how many calls have you seen them listen to over the length of the series? they're chasing a fucking serial killer doing gruesome shit. they're gonna huddle around a phone waiting for the case to crack on a voice? you been watching too much CSI.

as i had to remind someone above, there's enough other fucking indicators that the department isn't always on top of things (the ebay forearm, matthews note to the hooker, quinn fucking a material witness). all of a sudden they're going to just nail an anonymous phone call to blow it open?? fuckkkALL the way out of here

more period blood in the streets

They got an anonymous tip about the dude the entire department is focused on... a tip that lead them to finding two dead bodies n a stolen boat. And you really think it's a stretch to think they would want to hear the phone call to see if it could help provide any leads? I mean this would be pretty much a given imo.

And for the record I've never seen one second of any of those CSI shows lol

la guerta getting matthews job.

there's a lot of nitpicking about dexter's phones, calling 911, deb being in love with dex, etc... alot of it is justified, of course, i mean the show has definitely slipped from past seasons.

anyway, while we are nitpicking and looking for things to complain about, i'm trying to figure out why la guerta (that snake) would think that she would get matthews' position. she just got promoted like a month ago along with deb. there's no way she would get promoted. they'd pull in someone from another district before that happened.

http://dextergr.blogspot.com/2011/12/your-theories-louis-and-ice-truck.html?showComment=1323151655278#c5413772050239025984

(POTENTIAL SPOILERS)

"SPOILER ALERT:Killers revealed for season 7 and season 8 of Dexter
Season 7 killers: Louis and hot ex intern of masuka (original season 1 killers with Brian)
Season 8 killer: police chief Matthews (he killed Harry along with a horde of prostitutes)

Killer of season 7: Masuka's hot intern that he fired and current guy intern, Louis who is obsessed with dexter will be the big bads. thats right, two killers. The story of these two go back to the first season where they were in cahoots with Brian. Brian hired them to help with his killings. It was a tri-fecta of killers for the Ice Truck killings. This is why the hot intern stole and sold the prosthetic arm and why she sold it to Louis. They did this so as to have a memento from their killings from season 1. Season 7 will start off with killings that will resemble Brians killings from season 1. These two interns will try to impress dexter with grandeur killings in similar fashion as Brians however they will keep their identity hidden from dexter to start the season 7. Obviously the fans will immediately suspect Louis of these killings as we now have seen that he has the prosthetic arm in his possession; however the writers will give him solid alibis for each murder/kill and direct your attention away from him possibly being a killer. The big surprise next season will be, is that the hot intern is also perpetrating the murders so as to give Louis these solid alibi's. The ultimate plan for the two interns is that they want Dexter to join them and take over Brians place and lead them in more killings. While Dex might be tempted for a brief moment to join them, he will obviously kill them.

Kill of season 8: The Police Chief Matthews. What do we know. Police Chief Matthews was at the murder scene of the prostitute. Apparently attempted to "save her life by giving chest compressions" Lies and misdirection. Police Chief Matthews has been killing prostitutes for YEARS people. YEARS. He kills prostitutes and sets up an overdose to mask the murder. Hes been doing this for years and he is good at it. I know a lot of you will now chime in with "yes but the trauma to her chest was post mortem". This dude is the chief of police, he can fake/lie/forge death certificates. This is the reason why he wants that case closed asap, not bc of how it will reflect how it looks to the general public. He knows that if this case is reopened, it will draw more suspicion to his killings. NOW, what else do we know?! What about dexters/debra's father Harry. How did he die? If you remember correctly, he committed suicide and OVERDOSED on his heart medication. Are we really going to believe that? NOOOOO!!! Harry was working the force with now Police Chief Matthews way back when. Harry stumbled upon this addiction of Matthews. Harry was going to turn Matthews in and when Matthews found out, he corrected that situation by having Harry "overdose" on his heart medication and made it look like a suicide. He's a pro at making murders look like overdose/suicides. This is where things will get interesting in the final season. Bc the writers could have Debra find out about Dexter...or have Dexter tell Debra about his dark passenger in such a way, that they will BOTH KILL the police chief Matthews at the end of season 8.

Season 7s ending will redefine everything we thought we knew about the first season and Brian. Its perfect. AND, Season 8s ending will redefine EVERYTHING we thought we knew about Harry and how he died. The uniting of Dex and Deb killing together will make for a fantastic ending to the series and bring closure to their fathers death.

Sorry if i just ruined Dexter for everyone, but i had to let everyone know."

If the interns were working together with Brian before then why would she sell the hand to Louis? Don't they already know each other? If not, it doesn't make sense she put it up for auction, anyone could have bought it.

the girl working for the ice truck killer would make sense...but Louis? nah but i do think he's trying to impress dexter because, perhaps, he knows and he wants in.

when Travis is in the house and he opens up the mail and sees the hand, perfect. because its setting you up for the next season to include him and see what else may happen.

I wonder how whoever got the spoilers got them.

I wouldn't be mad if that's how it worked out.

cause it was too perfect. peaceful and calm in that church.

so don't read further if you haven't seen the finale.

i had a feeling Dexter would get caught.

i just hope S8 isn't going to be about some love story between Debra and Dexter. Cause I kind of think she'll be okay with finding out who he is....since she likes his "type." Hopefully he'll just shut that shit down. he already had a fucked up childhood, we don't need this crazy shit.

i mean what's crazier than a serial killer that works for the police and somehow never gets caught? this show has required the suspension of disbelief from day one, so why stop now?

i kind of hope they do tell a bizarre love story between them...it would be dark, taboo, macabre...exactly what this show is all about. why not push the envelope into "forbidden" territory even further?

afterall, they aren't blood related so.. *shrug*

definitely. i love the show and still will love it even if Deb + Dex hook up. But um, EWW. That would be kind of disgusting.

i actually like Deb. but that's Dexter's SISTER. even if they aren't blood related.

that matches the mood and signature of the show but i dunno. i like that other possible storyline...of them becoming partners in crime. she seems like she'd like to kill some mofos.

Only....Deb doesn't know because Dexter hasn't told her that Harry had an affair with his (Dexter's) mother..

Dexter's mother was a police informant that grew close to Harry. When Dexter was tracking his brother (the Ice Truck killer)...he came across this info and kept it hidden from Deb.

So the extra twist is that Deb is love with Dexter and accepts this as a feasible/possible relationship because she believes Dexter is her brother strictly by way of adoption... She has zero idea that they are blood related.

It's very fucked up that when she finally explores her true feelings for a man and finally seems to be able to let her guard down...she will possibly discover that she absolutely cannot have him....*AND* he too is a serial killer...

Wow.

name one TV show/movie where that doesn't happen...that's a part of storytelling. things have to work out or there would be no story. people have to magically find, encounter, overhear, etc each other in order for shit to move forward. this is basic stuff.

that's like writing a boy meets girl comedy and the boy never meets the girl cuz he wasn't ever in the right place at the right time. what's the point? LOL

Showing Dex brushing his teeth in the morning is mundane. Showing him changing the oil in his car is mundane. Showing him going for a routine physical at the doctor's office is mundane.

Showing with a phone after EXPLICITLY stating that he'd lost it? That's just sloppy writing. I'm sure there is a valid enough reason as to how he got another phone, but if you're gonna go out of your way to make a big deal about how he lost his phone, not making even a cursory mention of how he got a new one IS bad writing. I mean, it would take a second just to mention it in the voice-over, given how much other clumsy exposition is jammed in there every week.

That being said, I didn't even notice the discrepancy... Probably because I rarely watch this show with 100% attention paid and I was just waiting for it to be over with so I could watch Homeland. What I found more jarring was how he injected himself with the tranq and then proved to be impervious to it... Or did he fake inject himself or something?

where Dexter explains to us that the reason Travis was still unconscious was because he used animal tranqs... like that was necessary.

(Or was it meant to be a joke, since Travis had been in an animal costume? It was pointless.)

you guys will complain about ANYTHING and EVERYTHING.

the fact that you didn't even notice the discrepancy just proves it wasn't a crucial detail to the story.
its likely the writers want you to guess if Dexter actually injected himself with the real thing or not. more than likely he had 2 needles. who knows? might be revealed when the release the S7 dvd in the extras part.

You’re arguing a mundane detail though. In the scheme of the finale, is it really so important how Dexter replaced his lost phone? There are more important points in the episode than that.

Since this is a “poorly written show,” why do you continue to watch? Apparently you enjoy it to some extent, otherwise you wouldn’t have bothered to argue. I mean really. Why. Do. You. Watch.

As for loving the show, that is true, but I have also said that the finale was predictable and I don’t like the Deb + Dexter story, and that Brother Sam was killed off too soon. Or that last season was a worse mess.

>LOL
>
>You're taking the piss, right?

No. I guess you need them to connect the dots for you. This show is not simple enough for you. You don’t appreciate shows that keep you guessing or wondering. That you have to know right this minute how something happened, that it could be revealed next season. You just chalk it up to “terrible writing,” because they didn’t spell it out for you.

I said yeah, I was not paying attention. I stated that right up front.

Does any of that change the fact that it was sloppy writing?

No... It doesn't. Unless you can tell me there was some explanation offered that I missed because I wasn't paying attention, then the point still holds.

>You’re arguing a mundane detail though. In the scheme of the

Just say you like the show so much to overlook bullshit writing. That's fine... There's plenty of stuff I like despite being aware that they're terribly written (BELLY is one of my fave movies of all time). Instead you're twisting yourself into all kinds of shapes to try to prove that everybody else has the problem.

>Since this is a “poorly written show,” why do you continue to

That's really none of your concern. Does it change the fact that the show is poorly written?

NO.

LOL okay... I see you really ARE taking the piss.

"Dexter" is not simple enough for me? Most Disney and Pixar animated movies aimed at a single-digit-age audience have more complexity than "Dexter." And much, much better writing that doesn't insult the audience.

Yeah, because I pointed out blatant bad writing you had to talk about how the show is not "simple enough" for me to understand (LMAO!). You can dish it out but you can't take it.

>Did I use those words? I said people complain too much. Not
>that people have problems. Don't twist my words.

Did I say you said those words?

You said people complain too much, and I choose to define complaining too much as a problem.

>None of my concern? So you don't really have an explanation
>because it wouldn't help you argue your points.
>Now THAT is a cop-out.

Why I watch the show is none of your business.

All I said was that it is poorly written. Maybe I choose to watch it because it IS poorly written and as a professional writer myself, I like watching shit like that to learn what NOT to do.

We can argue about whether the writing is bad or not, but my reason for watching the show is irrelevant to the discussion.

>If the writing is so poor and terrible and not to your liking,
>why watch? Its very simple.

Because I hate myself and so I torture myself by watching crap.

Now: Does any of that change the fact that it was poorly written?

NO.

There are some posters on this board whose opinions on such matters I hold in high regard.

You are definitely not one of them.

Why should I be bothered because you don't recognize bad screenwriting/filmmaking? I have engaged in these activities myself and I recognize bad screenwriting/filmmaking because I have done bad screenwriting/filmmaking. EVERYBODY has.

I'm not even saying that the show as a whole sucks because of that... But I'm just pointing out "Hey... this is sloppy." It happens. But you can't admit it. Even the producer of the show admits it, and you are still bending over backwards to defend it.

Just admit that you follow the show blindly and unconditionally... It doesn't make you a bad person or a stupid person. It's okay!

theres subtext and then there's missing information brought on by rushed/lazy writing.

dexter, in a panic for his kidnapped son decides to take the time to play out that colin will ask if he has a needle to inject himself with, so he'll just bring a fake one just in case? and then to just wwe us on some "you thought i was passed out, but here i am!" shit? bullshit.

that whole scene was lame.

and what elevator just chills at the roof level so that the kid is still there minutes later.

and why was this kid just running around all smiley on a fucking skyscraper rooftop to confuse the security guard?

you guys are excusing bullshit writing for the purpose of calling us nitpicky.

just admit you overlook all the bullshit cause you enjoy the show blindly.

... is a pretty egregious thing to just skip over. Of course viewers can theorize some kind of explanation (maybe he clandestinely emptied the contents of the needle?) but to not explain how that all went down is very, very sloppy, and I agree that anyone defending that point is just blindly defending the show.

regarding the needle, where next season will likely lead off, characters, etc.

http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/12/19/dexter-finale-interview/

and to make a point about some of you saying leaving out details and say the storyline is sloppy, poor, whatever, he said this:

Q: "What are the storytelling goals for the next couple seasons?"

Scott Buck: "Dexter is always a show that’s less about plot twists and much more about characters. Our allegiance is always most strongly to the character of Dexter Morgan. What’s the most satisfying, honest place to take Dexter over the next two years."

Q: In the finale on top of the skyscraper, are we to assume Dexter had a dummy needle prepared, so that’s why he wasn’t unconscious after injecting himself?

A: It was not a dummy needle. We didn’t answer that question, but we had an answer for it. It was just a little awkward to slip it into the footage. We showed him emptying the needle seconds beforehand, but it didn’t look right . We tried to address it in voiceover, it just became awkward and cumbersome.

My favorite part is the question "Since Debra is a detective, did you toy with the idea of having her gradually figure things out over the course of a season instead of finding out all at once?" It's like the interviewer was saying "You realize you took all of the weight out of her character as a detective, right?"

"Did you toy with the idea?" Oh, you mean the whole through line in the last few seasons of her following up on Dex's mom and tying him to Brian/ITK and Harry's whole "I fuck COs" thing? Toy with it... they set it up... then ignored it and just was like "And then Deb just happens upon his secret like she walked in on him jerking off." lol

Q; The creepy computer guy. I’m assuming he mailed the hand because he’s infatuated with serial killers and Dexter, or is there something more I should be reading into that?

A: Well, he had no idea Dexter is a serial killer — at least, not to our knowledge. I think he’s just got this weird love-to-hate thing for Dexter and has latched onto him and is seeking his approval. But to send the hand like that, ****we have no idea***** what kind of message he’s sending. At this point, it’s just to arouse our suspicion about who is this guy and what are his intentions.

In the very next sentence, he says that it's done to arouse OUR suspicions about his intentions.

He uses the word OUR, because he's talking about WE the viewers of the show. Which is also why he says WE have no idea why he did it right now. I'm sure that the guy who is writing it knows why.

They better come up with a good fucking explanation for why
she went to the church at the exact moment he was killing
Travis. This is not nitpicking, this is a very credible gripe.
So, I better not have a bunch of Dexter fanboys and girls
questioning why I watch the show. I love Dexter, it's been
one of my favorite shows for years (and even in it's worst
season it's better than 90% of garbage on TV) but, c'mon
maaaaaan, when shit gets sloppy/lazy, people should have a
right to criticize.

I mean, we have a show that managed to (apparently) be a
gazillion times better than the book it's based on (I haven't
read the book but all I hear is about how terrible it is
compared to the show). It has been a good show, in my opinion,
because of the details. However, the last 2 seasons have been
extremely careless with all those inconvenient little details
that make us love Dexter's serial-killing-ninja-cop badassery.

Regarding this notion of "suspending belief", what distinguishes
great shows/movies/etc from the good ones is how they make the
process of "suspending belief" natural to the manner in which
the story is told. I do not simply believe that you can ask
your audience to just "suspend belief" without creating a world
where that suspension makes sense. For example, David Blaine
is a great illusionist because he makes us believe he can do
other-worldly shit like levitation. Your pedophile uncle is
a shitty magician because when he says "Look! I got your nose!",
you know it's really just his retarded thumb between his fingers.

The question is why the fuck did Dexter choose an active location from the biggest crime in town?!?!

I read an interview where Michael C Hall said that Dexter is a little more than human.
With that in mind, any expectation that this show's feet are firmly rooted in reality is out the window.

I've always expected a little convenient magic from this show - especially in the last 2/3 episodes of a season.

When that last scene played out, I also saw it coming and when it happened, I immediately thought "about time."

I have a 400 year old chip on my shoulder.

Did I miss the part where Dex said "Hey Deb, meet me
at the church. You won't miss me, I'll be wearing a
brown button-up v-neck. Oh and I'll be killing Travis"

I mean, how did she know to go there to find him? I
doubt she would be like: "Where the fuck is Dex? I
know! I'll try the church!"

...him telling the baby-sitter, "I got to go out. Deb
wants meet her at an old crime scene to collect evidence."

I assumed he only said that so that he had a reason to
get out and kill Travis. BUT, it actually makes some
sense now. Deb will go to the apartment and ask Batista's
hot sister where Dexter is and she'll say "oh, I thought
he went to meet you at an old crime scene." Which would
logically lead Deb to the church. So, if that's the
angle, I feel a bit better.

when Dex was in his office checking out the skyscraper, she actually tells him to go to the church to do a final forensic sweep on it. He mentions Harrison's play and says he'll do it afterwards.

as someone pointed out to you later, DEB TOLD HIM TO CLEAR THE CHURCH, AFTER THE PAGEANT. PAY THE FUCK ATTENTION MAN DAMN.

sigh....again you ain't read the goddamn book so how the fuck do you KNOW? book one and season one are closely aligned, except brian gets away, and deb finds out that dex is a killer (doesn't know to what degree but knows he does it) and uses his instincts to her advantage to help her solve cases, although she's never at ease with this knowledge about him. book 2 is similar in that doakes is getting hot on his ass but it deviates, in the book doakes loses limbs and his tongue is cut out, dexter actually saves him though but since he can't talk or write, he can't tell anyone about dexter.

but seriously, you haven't read the fucking book so miss me with how the show is a gazillion times better. and the argument has always been whether a MOVIE could stand up to a book, due to the time limitations, not a tv show, which actually has the time to work out and address many of the details contained in a book. there's like 5 books in the series. since you ain't read them, you have absolutely no basis to compare it to the show on.

Ok, I flaked on the retarded little scene where Deb told
Dex to head back to the church. I saw it and I admit I was
wrong about my comments regarding the end.

Regarding the shit about the book(s): calm down. All I said
as that everything I have heard and read about the books say
that they are not very well written. Sorry you got all butt
hurt about what I've heard from several sources. I'm not
really giving my opinion on the books. So, yeah, relax captain
internet spazz. sheesh.

im just saying, you can't comment on what "people say" cause you know people be on some bullshit. if they had the show follow the book, i think it would have been more interesting overall, because cody and astor had their own dark passengers and rita didn't die, she actually killed someone to save dexter. and the fact that deb would have known from the first season and had to deal with it before she was in a position of authority. anyhow...

I saw it coming, but I was really happy to see it go down that way.

It at least leaves something interesting to build towards for next season. The season as a whole wasn't great, but i think they've leftsome things to work with goign forward.

I like it.
