... They haven't shown him directly interacting with anyone outside Hanks' character yet. Sure, Hanks woke up to find the girl tied up, but Hanks could've done that off-screen then gone back to sleep or something. Obviously he was alive at some point, but he could've mentored Hanks before dying and he is just imagining him a la Dex-Harry.
