"College Hoops Coaching Carousel"

Dave Leitao out at DePaul.

Richard Pitino out at Minnesota... and is immediately hired at New Mexico.

Utah fired their coach surprisingly, which made people think they had their coach in mind. Today, Wojo and Marquette parted ways... and he's already rumored to be Utah's guy.

And of course, Archie Miller out at Indiana. The big rumored name, obviously, is Brad Stevens. Which seems unlikely... but the odds of Brad taking the job went from +2500 to +500 over the last 48 hours. Indiana fans are certainly trying to talk it into existence.

No one is leaving a head coaching job in the NBA for college anymore. Nobody is returning to college unless they’re no longer welcome to stay in pros.

Marquette spends a lot of money on basketball, has good facilities. Considering he was about to get fired, it’s a nice soft landing.

It's also a pretty good landing spot for someone who realistically wants a job of Texas's stature but who will desperately need to prove once again to people that he can actually coach.

I was a giant fan of Shaka at VCU, and at Texas, he basically tossed everything that made him successful in the garbage. He needs to get back to Havoc, and he needs to get back to recruiting players that fit a system instead of just grabbing the biggest future pro imaginable. Marquette seems like a nice place to do that.

The offenses were filled with bad jumpshots. Assist rate bottom half of the NCAA all but one season. Completely ditched the trademark defense that made him a coaching star and replaced it with a low-tempo game that resulted in one Top 20 defense and zero Top 20 offenses.

Never cracked the year-end Top 20 of KenPom at all, and only cracked the Top 35 twice, despite having during his tenure a minimum of five pros on the roster. Outside of *maybe* 2018, his teams never met preseason expectations. He brought in three five star recruits and fifteen four star recruits and converted it into three NCAA Tournament appearances and zero wins in six seasons.

I loved Shaka at VCU. I'm excited to see him get a fresh start. But his coaching, much like Archie Miller's at Indiana, went away from all the coaching decisions that got him the big job.

So yeah, I think it's fair to say he has to prove to people that he can coach successfully at the high-major level. Whether he goes back to Havoc or he finds something new, he's got to find a way to have a team either run coherent offense or play consistent elite defense. (All of this goes for Archie as well.)

>The offenses were filled with bad jumpshots.

They weren't

>Assist rate bottom half of the NCAA all but one season. Completely ditched

Iso basketball does that, why is that questionable?

>the trademark defense that made him a coaching star and
>replaced it with a low-tempo game that resulted in one Top 20
>defense and zero Top 20 offenses.

Talented kids aren't trying to run full court press.

>Never cracked the year-end Top 20 of KenPom at all, and only
>cracked the Top 35 twice, despite having during his tenure a
>minimum of five pros on the roster.

All of those pros were young bigs.
Which 1. When was the last dominant/young college big not named Greg Odom?
And 2. That meant his guards have been underclassmen every year except tw. Were any of them outside of Andrew Jones considered NBA talent?

>Outside of *maybe* 2018,
>his teams never met preseason expectations. He brought in
>three five star recruits and fifteen four star recruits

So he never was short at identifying or getting talent to sign

>and
>converted it into three NCAA Tournament appearances and zero
>wins in six seasons.

People lose in tournaments. The first year he lost from a half court shot, the second trip his young team took a higher seeded Nevada team to OT, won the NIT, didn't get to play last year. This year got into a junk yard fight with a team that was throwing up shots, that he clamped down, but got turned over and lost on free throws with 1.3 seconds on a questionable at best call. This after he won the BIG 12 tournment a week before, which had literally never happened at Texas.

>I loved Shaka at VCU. I'm excited to see him get a fresh
>start. But his coaching, much like Archie Miller's at Indiana,
>went away from all the coaching decisions that got him the big
>job.

It sure didn't keep him from coaching the U23 Team USA

>So yeah, I think it's fair to say he has to prove to people
>that he can coach successfully at the high-major level.

Hope the national team gets the memo about his lack of coaching prowess

>Whether he goes back to Havoc or he finds something new, he's
>got to find a way to have a team either run coherent offense
>or play consistent elite defense. (All of this goes for Archie
>as well.)

The team he just lost to had literally the worst shooting percentage of any team to ever win a tournament game. There's nothing wrong with his defense

What's more likely ... the 43 year old man, who's respected around his profession both in college and professionally, with a proven track record of success and identifying talent just flames out would never do well ... or that college basketball fans have a ridiculous expectation of some programs or progress and Black men in particular get held to standards of potential that no white man does and then they justify their warped world view by overlooking and backdooring arguments to suit whatever narrative they need to sell?

I'm glad for that man.

But a few things.

>>The offenses were filled with bad jumpshots.
>
>They weren't
>
>>Assist rate bottom half of the NCAA all but one season.
>Completely ditched
>
>Iso basketball does that, why is that questionable?

... I mean, if you think a team that takes a lot of off-the-bounce jumpers without assists isn't questionable offense, then we just disagree.

>>the trademark defense that made him a coaching star and
>>replaced it with a low-tempo game that resulted in one Top
>20
>>defense and zero Top 20 offenses.
>
>Talented kids aren't trying to run full court press.

Then why go to Texas? lol, I realize the answer is "money," but you got famous for running a great system, and then you completely ditch that system and never find that same degree of success. I don't think it's unfair to call that into question!

>>So yeah, I think it's fair to say he has to prove to people
>>that he can coach successfully at the high-major level.
>
>Hope the national team gets the memo about his lack of
>coaching prowess

I didn't say he has a lack of coaching prowess. In fact, I pointed out what a tremendous job he did at VCU developing a system that became literally known across the sport by *name.* Very, very few coaches can do that.

I questioned whether he can successfully coach at the high-major level, especially if he doesn't use the system that made him famous. And considering the mediocre results he generated at Texas on the whole, I don't think that's an unfair question to ask.

>>Whether he goes back to Havoc or he finds something new,
>he's

>Archie
>>as well.)
>
>The team he just lost to had literally the worst shooting
>percentage of any team to ever win a tournament game. There's
>nothing wrong with his defense

Yeah, I mean, I was talking about season-long defense, not one game. His defensive numbers have been consistently good without being truly elite. I don't doubt Texas's ability to defend for one game.

>What's more likely ... the 43 year old man, who's respected
>around his profession both in college and professionally, with

I don't disagree that Texas has too high an expectation level-- I agree with that. But programs with a lot of money-- which Texas has-- and programs that bring in a lot of talent-- which Texas has done under Smart-- expect results. That's just reality.

And you won't find me disagreeing that black coaches catch unfair flak. I was on the front lines of yelling at people when Ewing and Howard were hired and met with all manner of racist skepticism. So yeah, NCAA basketball has a long way to go in that regard. I thought Shaka was a great hire. I wish it had worked out better.

But I'm hardly alone in wondering why Shaka ditched the system that made him the hottest commodity in the sport, and I'm hardly alone in thinking that Texas's iso, off-the-bounce, jumper-oriented offense was pretty gross to watch a lot of the time. That's just not going to be a successful offense ever, unless you have pro level guards and wings taking those shots (and even then, it usually backfires).

I'm really rooting for Shaka at Marquette. He's an obvious upgrade over Wojo, a guy I personally love from being a Duke fan, but also a guy who was pretty unquestionably a terrible coach at Marquette. I'd love to see Shaka get back to Havoc and get back to being considered one of the hottest names in coaching.

He’s said in interviews that running a press with the quality of guards in the Big 12 and having young bigs makes that a recipe for disaster.

And I’d say it wasn’t a jumper oriented offense. There were two main sets. The main one was drive, skip pass to a spot up three. This was mainly run by Coleman and the other dude from St Louis.
The second set was dribble the hell out of ball, and try to score. This was executed by Brown, Jones, and Kai Jones. That’s the “I’ll give you 3-5 sets a game to get your league profile up” I think you have to eat that if you want that kind of talent to come in AND contribute on the defensive end.
It’s the same set Mo Bamba had, same set Jaxson Hayes had.
There’s no real point in running a post game when your strongest big is a foul machine that can’t score, your second strongest big can’t hit a free throw, and all of your other bigs are young strings.

Folks are out here acting like he was Rick Barnes on offense.

>Folks are out here acting like he was Rick Barnes on offense.

... and I just made good money fading Rick Barnes in the tournament this year for this very reason, lol...

... but in the name of fairness, Rick Barnes, in his first six seasons at Texas, had four Top 20 offenses compared to Shaka's none. And won a Big 12 regular season title. And nine tournament games. And 73 conference wins to Shaka's 51.

Now, if you asked me to take a coach heads up, I take Smart over Barnes, because I like what Shaka did at VCU over anything Barnes has ever done. Like I said, I'm not a Barnes fan... but at a certain point, it's gotta be hard for Texas fans to ignore the results. Shit, it's been hard for me too-- I've been fading Texas against the spread gambling the last two years and have a winning record doing so.

As you said elsewhere, and as I agree with, it's a good time for him to move on. The cupboard would be fairly bare next year (transfer market pending), and next year wouldn't go well for him in all likelihood. So him controlling his destiny and going to get a fresh start will hopefully serve him well.

And I realize I'm not savvy to some of the recruiting pressures a job like Texas may carry, but hopefully Marquette will allow him to recruit system players and run a system that yields more efficient results than the ones he got at Texas.

And then he spent the next ten years establishing himself as a man with good defense, shit offense, who's teams break from pressure at the end of seasons.

He also took over the program a year older than Shaka is now. Texas is a top 30 basketball program that's trying to buy their way into top 15, and it'll never happen. They NEEDED someone like Shaka to stick around and build and they seem fully invested in buying their way out of any problem.

>And I realize I'm not savvy to some of the recruiting
>pressures a job like Texas may carry,

There's not much pressure, stay in the good graces of the Lucas family, always talk to TJ Ford, find someway to get a foothold in Dallas and you're straight. That RB had to have a Canadian pipeline stronger than his Dallas one and it was just a givem exemplifies that the state is up for grabs. For hoops Texas is no different than U of H, Tech, TCU, SMU (when Larry Brown was there), A&M etc

The albatross isn't the system it's managing to build a team that can run with and close out Kansas on the perimeter, rebound with Baylor, and then have enough identity to avoid the rest of any conference traps so that you can make the 64. If you're chalking up 4 automatic in conference losses because you don't build against the top 2 programs you're a fool. So whoever gets the job better have a Kansas killer system, because you can't out recruit or out depth them, you have to build specifically to beat them.

In response to Reply # 16

During that time period he achieved less at Dayton than Smart did at VCU.

However, he was a front runner for one or the highest gigs in college ball.

Texas Basketball is no where near the prestige or demand that Indiana Basketball is.

Meanwhile, Shaka Smart achieved more at Texas during that period that Archie Miller did at his.

Thad was be an associate AD and will assist Woodson's staff.

I think it's a good match. Thad doesn't have the health to do all the coaching and recruiting, it seems... but he's a great guy to have on your staff. Woodson did great in turning 2 shitty franchises into 50-win teams in the NBA, but I'm sure there were questions about the transition from NBA to college for someone who's never coached college ... but now you've got Matta, a seasoned Big Ten vet, on board to ease Woodson's transition into this world.

I like this more the more I think about it.

That’s all that matters. Indiana hasn’t done anything since Bob Knight.

Is Woodson a big enough identity? Can he get kids to go to Indiana

That’s the competition. And now that Smart is at Marquette...that’s even more

coaching and ability along with Matta's involvement which will help get him transitioned to the college game and recruiting? Can't get much better than that.

I never understood the Beilein to Indiana rumors (maybe that was just Michigan circles talking about that.) Beilein is a program builder type that would take some time, not a quick turnaround hire. And at his age, how much time would he really have? Indiana's base is going to want some quick results. Along with that, he's worked best with mid-level recruits that he was able to coach up (which is why the NBA never made sense to me for him), which means he wouldn't likely have taken full advantage of the Indiana brand in recruiting.

Y’all already have a good program so you wouldn’t need to do a 5 year Beilein rebuild...I’d be pissed if he went there though.

On the other hand, he’d be like 75 by the time he had Indiana turned around. They need someone who can come in, get a couple huge recruiting classes and get them back to winning.

ill bet you a dollar we're talking about Max Christie the same way in 2 years if he isnt one and done

In response to Reply # 45

- scrappy/marksman in his time at UNC (honestly you normally hate those type of players because the fans go OD w/ the praise but i really loved having him)
- 05 title player
- coaches right up the road at UNCG and put together several 20 win seasons and NCAA appearances
- white (sorry but it matters for the donors. i see folks saying go over to Central and grab Moton but that's not happening. and they not giving it to Hubert w/ no exp either)

it's the most obvious Carolina move to make. he isn't worthy at all IMO but he's the most worthy of the family candidates.

i'd swerve completely and go pluck away one of the top coaches. the Carolina family is many things. including stale. it's time to bring the family into modern times. classic Carolina ball is in the mud w/ the way the game is played today. we need fresh ideas. and we offer a unique platform and opportunity that will appeal to ANYONE.

In response to Reply # 49

Wes has only won the SoCon twice in nine seasons. I just... can't see that being enough.

Plus, it feels like with these older coaches that people like making the argument of a smooth transition. Hubert could potentially convince some of the current crew to stay, could keep some of the assistants on, etc. I feel like Wes would represent a reboot to some extent. Especially considering the style Wes would want to play almost certainly doesn't include traditional big men, lol.

In response to Reply # 62

Like, I don't doubt that Stack has a lot of knowledge of the game, because he did a great job as a G-League coach by all accounts... but he's not recruiting well. He's not even getting good recruits by *Vanderbilt* standards. And the quality of shots they're generating on offense are, to put it mildly, bad. I watched a few of their games the last two years, and they looked lost on both ends.

As a Duke fan, I'd love to see Stackhouse get the job.

He probably could’ve stayed in the NBA and then rode Juwan Howard’s wave right now and got that UNC job.

Tough sell after two bad years at Vandy, which is basically a no win job.

My got to for sports is the 2008-2009 Texas Longhorns Football team.
It was a nearly un-enjoyable path to the national championship game
They won against Nebraska on a last second field goal and what should've been exciting was gross ... there was just no joy after multiple hours of unwatchable football.

On top of that, outside of McCoy and Shipley the receivers were BAD.
Fozzy Whitaker gets hurt half way into the season and the offense is just stale.

I think of Texas Basketball being good/bad again ... and I think of people sagging off Justin Mason/Dogus Balbay because they can't hit from 10-15 out.

In response to Reply # 0

The schools they moved to require a completely different coaching style and skill set.

Shaka built VCU by getting under the radar players with a chip on their shoulder and pushing them real hard.
He got to Texas with all the 5 stars he wanted at his disposal, but couldn't replicate the success. The mentality of the players is just different.

Beard did the same thing at Texas Tech. Made runs with the occasional top 100 recruit on the roster and transfers. I'd say he didn't have much success with the more high profile players he started bringing in the last couple of years.

I don't know if the type of players Texas brings in would be receptive to his current coaching style

If Texas keeps their stream of massive 5-star bigs coming, that would absolutely suit Beard's packline a lot better than it would've suited Havoc-- so I don't think he'd have to abandon his core defensive principles.

Outside of Nimari Burnett, Beard's really never had anything resembling a blue chip recruit, so it's hard to say how dealing with higher level recruits will play out... but Beard is, imo, a Top 10 coach in the country minimum and one hell of a hire. I'd take him at Duke in a fucking New York minute if I could.

Jeff Lebo takes his spot. Carolina guy but more on the outer rim. He's been around the block so I expect some new wrinkles to the Carolina system.

Sean May staying. Not sure what he does. I think his position is DOBO, and maybe big man coach

Jackie Manuel is the new dude. Fan fav in his time at UNC. Really surreal that he's 38. The kids should love him.

96. "My hot take: this year is Roy’s fault."
In response to Reply # 95

It’s not like UNC was much better last year with this crew. All the main guys this year were Roy guys. The best recruit from last year… was Walker Kessler, a guy Roy ran off by not playing him.

You could argue the only two main contributors Hubert brought in were Manek— their most consistent player outside of Bacot this year— and Garcia— a guy who clearly has potential but who has injury/family issues keeping him away from the game.

Like, yes, it’s been a bad year for UNC. But a big chunk of that is how shitty this guard class has been. Another big chunk is that Leaky Black is a zero offense player. Another big chunk is that Roy left pretty suddenly— say what you will about K’s approach, but at least his approach helped recruiting tremendously, something Hubert had no shot with this season.

I know the fans are screaming, but I’d give Hubert at least 3 full seasons. Gotta see what he can do in a post-Love/Davis era. (And this isn’t just me saying this as a Duke fan who loves watching UNC lose to fucking Capel of all people.)

I know UNC fans love him, but his record in the SoCon is... pretty spotty when you break it down. I don’t blame UNC for not going that way. That record should scare UNC higher-ups.

If he can nail this Cincy job, then absolutely, he’s next in line. I’m just... not necessarily as high on him right now. He screams a lower major Shaka, and I’ll be interested to see if his style translates to the AAC/if he sticks with it.

“Why don’t they just get a driver?” Players are young and stupid and think they’re invincible Huggins should know better I’m sure he talks to his teams about this and has an entire staff that he could pay to drive him around not to mention probably kids, grandkids, nephews, nieces etc
