"Johnny wants Playoffs: Wiz trade 2014 1st rounder to Suns for Gortat."
Fri Oct-25-13 04:41 PM by Frank Longo

Wiz gets Gortat, Macolm Lee, Shannon Brown, and Kendall Marshall for Okafor and a 2014 1st rounder.

Obviously a great deal for Phoenix. Gortat an upgrade for a playoff push this year too.

That's probably enough for the Wiz to make the playoffs, but now the Suns are going to be truly awful. Tanking for Wiggins.

And holy shit, the Suns have FOUR first round picks in the next draft? God damn.

4. Washington Will Trade for a Big Man in the Next Month — If Emeka Okafor's Prognosis Is Bad

General manager Ernie Grunfeld is in the last year of his contract, and owner Ted Leonsis, not the shy sort, has made it clear he expects the Wiz to make the playoffs. Washington was over .500 last season when Bradley Beal and John Wall were both available, and lineups featuring combinations of its core six or seven guys generally did quite well. But Okafor was one of those core guys, and the gap between Okafor and his backups — Kevin Seraphin and Jan Vesely — is a freaking chasm. Al Harrington can soak up some minutes as a small-ball power forward, a role he played brilliantly for Denver two seasons ago, but he's aging and coming off major knee issues.

The Wiz need a big man, unless they get good news soon on Okafor. Alternatively, if Okafor is healthy, Washington could continue its history of flipping mega-expiring contracts (and the cap space they promise) into players on longer-term deals; that's how it got Okafor. Stay tuned either way on the Wiz.

He's now officially turned all of his veteran fringe guys into legitimate assets.

Bledsoe and 3 2014 1st rounders? For those guys? Impressive.

I mean, Sarver still gonna fuck it all up by insisting on giving Rudy Gay $100 million next year or some shit, but for now this was some terrific work.

He is who he is at this point, which is not a franchise player.

This dude had 4 years to learn pace control and he is still turnover prone. He could very well end up like Chauncey Billups but at this point its highly unlikely. Wiz don't have any good veteran PGs or coaches he can learn from.

He is consistent at least. He ain't no star though.

But ALOT better than most pgs in the Assist % department.

So it I can take that. And leave room for improvement.

Most players that pass the ball a lot have a lot of turnovers.

So it's incorrect to label him as "turnover prone" in relation to other top pgs.

???

there are 47 players listed in that link you posted.

sorted by turnover rate, wall ranks 28th.

that's 27 guys above him (including most of the league's "elite" pgs, as well as most of the players generally considered to be wall's "peers") and 19 below (mostly journeyman, replacement-level-player, "not even in the conversation" types)

how does that translate to "a little better than most"?

>But ALOT better than most pgs in the Assist % department.

among the 25+mpg players in that link, he's actually 27th in assist rate. basically the same as turnover rate. right in the middle.

so again, not "better than most"

>Most players that pass the ball a lot have a lot of

well, yeah. there's no apples v oranges here, we're only discussing PGs.

>So it's incorrect to label him as "turnover prone" in relation

i mean... not really.

it's actually somewhat accurate. the link you provided kind of reinforces that.

last year, according to the information in the link you posted, john wall turned the ball over at a higher rate than almost all of the league's top point guards, while his assist rate (26.27) was not "near the top" or "better than most", but slightly worse than the league average (27.59) and ranked 27th of 47 players who averaged more than 25+mpg.

And that is what the Wiz need him to be. Ain't that why he got $90 mill from them? Paying that kind of money just to be a little better than Jameer Nelson ain't a good thing.

I will definitely be surprised if dude makes an all star team this season. I'll be even more surprised if they make the playoffs. I don't think either is happening.

you're reading the wrong column, dogg.

%Ast is the percentage of the player's own field goals that were assisted. that basically indicates who creates their own offense vs who's getting set up by others.

so catch-and-shoot guys like kidd, fisher, blake, chalmers are in the 60+ % range. whereas paul, wall, westbrook, rondo etc create their own shots.

AR is the assist rate. an estimate of how many possessions out of every 100 end w/ that player getting an assist.

i was confused, like, why is duke just flat out lying to himself? lmao.

it's really not too difficult. basically, a player "uses" a possession if that possession ends in him taking a shot, shooting free throws, or turning the ball over. pretty intuitive.

usage rate is the percent of team possessions a player uses in his floor time. high usage + high efficiency = good.

assist rate is assists divided by used possessions, expressed as a percentage. it's just a rough efficiency metric for playmaking / shot creation. the higher the AR, the more efficient the playmaker.

Assist Percentage (available since the 1964-65 season in the NBA); the formula is 100 * AST / (((MP / (Tm MP / 5)) * Tm FG) - FG). Assist percentage is an estimate of the percentage of teammate field goals a player assisted while he was on the floor.

basketball ref doesn't have NBA's assist%. Basketball ref's asssit% is the percentage of other players' baskets that the player of interest assisted on. That's, with serious limitations, a measure of how good a distributor one is and/or how much one's team needs you to distribute/how much you ball hog. It's a messy statistic.

NBA's assist rate is a comparison of one's assist ne's shots. So it's a measure of whether or not he takes shots or assists them. It kinda answers the question: are you a gunner or a distributor?

So John Wall assists (compared to shoots) at about the rate of an average NBA guard. He's a top 5 distributor in terms of how much his teammates convert on his passes.

now that one actually does measure what you thought the other one on hoopdata did (% of fgs the player assisted while on the floor)

the "advanced" metrics use official league stats in their formulas but there's no industrywide standardization or anything. the different sites each use their own methodologies.

wall's actually pretty good in that one, btw :

so yeah, there's one you can cyse.

John gonna make you madder.

A.D. gonna make you madder.

Cuz gonna make you madder.

Kanter gonna make you madder.

E-Bled gonna make you madder.

and the list goes on and on.

Shit you probably gonna even tune into a Suns game and see Goodwin stunting and say to yourself, "Why can't Austin do that?"

I know dude.

Then the Tournament. You gonna be mad. "Cal don't coach. He just rolls the balls out."

Mad.

Then the draft gonna come. Randle gonna go before Jabari. You gonna be HOT.

HOTTER than you already are at Young Juju.

And don't even get me started on James Young, The Twins, Poy Boy, and WCS.

This shit only gets worst from here on out.

You're better off ejecting and landing on Warren Coolidge Island and battling with him to see if Jabari is better than Kyle Anderson.

The Celtics made changes. So now Rondo's, Kyle Lowry, because according to you they won't win as much.

And Kyrie's never won shit, but you trying to force people to believe he's a star.

Cool story.

Cavs haven't even had a significant win streak with Kyrie dude.

Stick to them highlight dribbling films. And Rondo will stick to those Playoff highlight films.

superstar. Right?

You flipped on Rondo so many times now.

You initially hated him.

Then tried to be friends.

Now hate him again.

Hahaha.

It don't matter. We got the logs.

So for the record, UK's got 2 and now possibly 3 point guards (E-Bled) better than Kyrie.

No worries though. You got Quinn Cook coming.

LMAO.

We gonna do that Quinn Cook vs Tyler Ulis next year or what?

rondo never been a "star"...he's has no charisma and his game is boring. kyrie is simply a star. sorry it bothers you.

hey, i see we're making progress. there was a time you thought UK had four niggas better than kyrie. it's okay. this will all be over soon. but, unlike knight, i am going to fuckin torture you on this board FOREVER for even gettin niggas riled up to think wall ever on his level, when we've had two years to see otherwise. you've fought hard to get niggas not to believe their own eyes. i give you that.

"e-bled" AKA big nostril eric is no better than kyle lowry.

quinn will be in the L. nobody takes your lil darren sproles ass PG seriously, dude.

Why don't you just say "flair" if you gonna be on your T.G.I.Fridays my dude.

Rubio got flair? He better too?

Sure, because Lowry is good right? He's yours now.

Just saying.

Well nobody except you.

I'm cooking all of the players you have high hopes for.

Except Jabari. I like him. But if you keep saying he's as good as Junkyard Ju, you gonna end up on the wrong side of that one again.

But Rodney Hood? I'm cooking his ass.

If you think Amile (no UK offer) is good too, I'm putting him the deep fryer.

LMAO...we go through the same shit every year....all these niggas y'all get and they don't be poppin...LMAO!!!! 4 years of this...you keep talking...LMAO!!!...not one STAR produced yet. hahahahahahaha.

He plays nothing like Randolph. At all.

He's a inside outside guy with a great motor.

He's good. Just not better than Randle. There's nothing wrong with that.

So you're gonna rely on me using our shitty search function on OKS and hoping what you said was archived?

Great tactic.

That's what flip floppers do.

>ain't saying i'mma hate on him or party when he has a bad

Don't care. Rondo doesn't need to make the playoffs this year to be a star. ***shrugs***

He just needs to come back. Get healthy and make the Celtics better. Move in the right direction.

>LMAO...we go through the same shit every year....all these

None of them popped? Wall? Cuz? BK? Davis?

They've all won more games than Kyrie.

Yet he's a star, because you want us to believe he's a star. Lol

>it's gonna happen again this year. davis ain't makin
>it...LMAO!!!

Davis gonna get closer to the playoffs than Kyrie too.

We've done this over and over and all those players you rep just fizzle. Year in and year out. Kyrie is the one hope yet.

And I'll give you this he's solid. He's not Nolan Smith (where's he at btw). And he's not Austin Rivers (remember when I called him Bayles & it's weird that he's not even THAT). But Kyrie is just solid. Maybe he needs a big pg type to handle the ball while he shoots. Trade for Tony Wroten (who's better than Wall according to you) maybe?

Ahh well...

The NBA season is about to start. And college too. So we shall see.

Except it's not. The scouts already see it. I see Wiggins talk. I see Randle talk. I see Emblid talk. I see Exum talk. I even see James Young talk.

Shit's cooled on Jabari. And you're upset.

Just like if it cools on Okafor and Myles starts getting the love, you'll be upset again.

Not my fault. Stop sending busts to the league.

No, on here. You were late to the party and initially hated on Rondo.

If in your own private time you had Rondo footie pajamas and stood in major intersections with a sandwich board claiming he's the best pg in college than that's on you.

Just like you tried to be friends with John.

All because you had NOBODY.

Hey, if I had to try to put a positive spin on Nolan Smith, I'd look elsewhere too. But that's not the case.

We got players.

That's not a flip. I still like Knight. He still has a chance to grow. He'll still probably win more games than Kyrie this year. He'll still probably make the playoffs before Kyrie this year.

No you play to make your team better and win. You hyping popularity. Lol.

That's what losers do. Mediocre losers.

I want my players to win and play on the big stage. You wanna swipe articles and youtube clips of dribbling in 30 point blowouts.

What part of the game is that?

Again. Playoffs. That's the goal. Not being Kevin Love and still trying as your 30's get closer. Lol.

Told you before, I want A.D. to be Duncan not an empty stats guy like Love or Blake.

He'll be the best power forward in the game.

Olympic Gold Medal? Check.

You mad? Double Check.

No buzz around those 2 my friend. Maybe J.O. if he gets on his grind again. But definitely not Jabari.

Kyrie is the bridge from Grant Hill's first 3 years to Jabari? Lol

How big is that bridge fam? Bridge of Terabithia? Links you to the fantasy world where people care about Duke players winning 20 games in an 82 game season?

And I peep how you've cooled on Tyus.

That was a good look. Cuz little Nightcrawler pg's have a low return.

Nope. Doron has an elite skill. So he'll be around while Nolan is trying to barter Wale cd's for goat's milk in some Eastern European village. Sleeping in Hostels and shit.

Teague will be alright. Just needs to play. His time will come. It ALWAYS comes. (see E-Bled and Kanter).

See when you put A LOT of dudes into the league, not everyone can get into the optimum situation right away. So you have to wait.

Some guys like Goodwin get into good situations.

Others like T-Jones have to wait.

And then there's others like MKG that just need to round out the edges of their game, let their teams get rid of the shitty players and do what they do.

Lol....psst you wish you had those 3 in your arsenal don't you. But no, you somewhere looking at McRoberts highlights.

You really talking about pre-season now? Seriously?

Ummmm Wroten's done. Sorry. He is what he is.

Just like Quincy Miller is what he is. When your fit of anger called him better than A.D.

No new friends when you try to come around again and talk about Wall being good or A.D. being good or Cuz or E-Bled. It's ALL logged. Just like what you said about Rondo was logged.

see, i'm used to having lottery pick after lottery pick that BECOME role players after having high hopes for them. you not. i know STARS are rare. you don't. that's why you done sat here four years in a row and cysed ALL these dudes y'all have produced like y'all gonna have multiple all-star representatives for the next decade. hasn't happened that way, huh? one by one, they settling into ROLE PLAYER status...knight, gilly, PPat, TJ, Enes...then you got your scrubs, like teague and lamb...see there was a time you screamed on ALL them...like, you talked STAR stuff.

dogg, be honest...this happened. meanwhile, duke just had MULTIPLE all-stars. this is our reality while you keep talking that woulda coulda shoulda mumbo jumbo, cysed off draft positions. they gotta PRODUCE. what part of that you don't get?

now, you holding out hope that wall, davis, cuz or bledsoe can pop this year. yeah, dogg...not ONE is a franchise STAR player. they've been neither all-stars nor playoffs...NOR ROY. they've done NOTHING. and soon they'll all settle into ROLE PLAYER status.

i been there. it's disappointing. well, not AS disappointing as this must be for you.

oh, and i guess i can't cyse batty's 2 titles...oops, i mean 3.

I don't have to read the rest of what you typed.

Probably be watching the Afternoon HORSE game with chips and shit.

um...did ya not see batty in the nba finals? i ain't see no UK dudes hittin 6 threes in a game 7.

it occurs to me that AT THIS MOMENT in THIS EXCHANGE, you have now talked yourself into a corner. we both know it. and it's funny.

i care too. all your "stars", wall, davis, cuz and bledsoe...they not making it.

i even let you set up the playoffs as a catch all to gain ground and maybe in some posters eyes WIN this kyrie v. wall debate...like, forget stats and accolades and actual performance, we just gonna say playoffs and whoever wins the most games in the playoffs. because you NEED it to be formatted that way. because the stats will be lopsided.

and you STILL gonna take an L.

First off, major kudos to Suns GM Ryan McDonough for recognizing leverage opportunities and turning the players he inherited into Bledsoe and three first rounders in what should be a great draft class. He has set the Suns up for a very nice turnaround.

For the Wiz....Gortat is a very nice addition. He obviously isn't the shot blocker that Emeka is but he still provides good defensive coverage and is very capable on the offensive end...can hit that mid-range jumper off pocket passes, high activity, and moves very well off the ball. They also got some depth on the wings with Shannon and Lee.

It's more or less a straight-up deal for Gortat.

but honestly, if you're not getting a top 7 or 8 pick, you're not getting a franchise level/all-star guy. all 3 of the picks they've gotten so far are protected through like 13 or 14. not to say adding solid rooks in the mid 1st round is a bad thing, but it's not like they're gonna have a shot at 2 or 3 lottery guys in one draft.

the extra picks and the cap space is likely to facilitate a trade for a star type,so they don't wind up with RFA Eric Gordon situation.

Or those extra picks or for depth.

Or a move up in the draft.

In this draft rather have more than less.

Plus...having 4 1st rounders you can package 2 or 1 and a player to move up.

Having these pieces gives them a variety of options.

they might not get the right guy, but there will be someone there in the teens and twenties that can be a difference maker.

The Wizards will likely make the playoffs with this lineup....The only thing that will stop them is a serious injury to Wall...But all the pieces are there especially with this Gortat move (unspectacular, but very solid on the pick and roll)....

I'm thinking 7th or 8th seed...

Wall was dealing in the second half of the season...For all his silly need to shoot the 3 when he lacks that range, the kid is a real PG who is pretty old school in terms of getting his teammates going...

Agendas aside, Wall is a talented kid...To me, the interesting part will be how some folks will react when the Wizards makes that playoff leap....

Right now I got Miami, Chicago, Brooklyn, Indy, Washington, NY, Bucks, Pistons all making it in the East (in no order)....

Cleveland may get in if Bynum is able to give them something....But that's a big IF...

any time you make a move with that as your goal/expectation, it is an L. shooting for the middle is the worst thing you can do in the NBA, and realistically speaking this is more like shooting for the middle toward the bottom.

they probably could have challenged for one of those spots without gortat. i mean boston will be worse, philly will be worse, milwaukee will be a bit worse, etc. a lot of those 7-10 teams are sucking wind as it is.

now if they have an injury to wall or other significant problems (as they usually do), then they just traded a lotto pick for a decent center.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

If we were talking about an aging, veteran team, you would be right...But the Wizards main nucleus is still very young...This is a team that hasn't sniffed the playoffs in a while...When you have a young player leading the way (Wall) any playoff experience is great...Especially for a team that has been a joke...

I'm giving the Wizards that 8th or 7th spot...Don't think they can get 6th though...They have to crawl before they can walk...

I think Wall will be OK...The good thing about the kid is he played his ass off in the second half of the season...The best he's played since that rookie year...I think the Wizards are in for a little luck this season...

with wall and beal, and whatever the hell porter is, add gortat and you have a young core who made the offs a la houston.

i think they're gonna have a decent amount of cap space soon. if they're courting FA's then they can make the "look what we were w/o you / what we can be with you" pitch

gotta give the fanbase something, can't do a rebuild now. gave johnny all that cake.

both gortat and okafor are expiring, but shit, at least gortat will get you oncourt value

and the pick is top 12 protected.

It's very simple really...U want your young star players to make the playoffs...U talking about low seeding...lol....The Wizards are just trying to get over .500...

Making the playoffs would be a big deal for Wall, Beal and company...This is not a team in limbo like say Atlanta for all those years when they would be a 6, 7, or 8th seed...That team needed to be blown up because they were mediocre and had little upside...

But when you have a team still trying to gain respectability...The playoffs (at ANY seed) is the proper first step...

That is all the expectations that Ernie has to maintain at this point. This team as currently constructed is barely an 8 seed and I guess that is enough for him to keep his job.

He's still such an elite passer that if a team with wing/post weapons loses a point guard or two to injury, I can see someone taking a chance on him.

But he's so damn slow, and NBA PGs are so damn fast. Odds are and have been against him. I would've thought he'd have kept improving his 3-point shooting enough that he could've ended up as a Calderon Lite, a backup guy who won't defend at all but can facilitate the offense while your starter rests.

He needs a consistent 38%< 3-point shot to have a shot at ever getting minutes.

After trading Marcin Gortat before Polish Heritage Night, Suns to give free tickets to stiffed fans

By Dan Devine
October 30, 2013 3:20 PM
Ball Don't Lie

When the Phoenix Suns traded starting center Marcin Gortat to the Washington Wizards on Friday, our thoughts immediately turned to the on-court impact of the trade — whether replacing an injured Emeka Okafor/an unimpressive Kevin Seraphin with Gortat is enough of an upgrade to buoy the Wizards' pursuit of a playoff berth, whether a top-12-protected first-round pick was too precious an asset to flip for Gortat's services, just how quickly Suns general manager Ryan McDonough can turn his mounting stockpile of first-rounders into the next generation of competitive Phoenix teams, and so on.

We didn't, however, give much thought to how the trade might affect the Suns' planned promotional calendar ... which makes sense, because that's not really something we tend to consider when the outgoing player isn't really face-of-the-franchise level. Well, that was our bad, apparently. We should have thought about the Suns' opening-night promotion, because it is — no kidding — Polish Heritage Night, which you'd have to imagine is a way more festive occasion when the fans can celebrate a 6-foot-11 strongman from Lodz whose nickname is "The Polish Hammer."

Alas, it's apparently not to be, which kind of bummed Gortat out ... especially given how much effort he put into setting things up for it, as he told Michael Lee of the Washington Post:

The timing of the trade caught Gortat off guard, too, because he assumed that he would at least make it through the first week of the regular season. The Suns planned to have Polish heritage night for their home opener on Wednesday and Gortat had flown in 25 people from his native country — including soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, the Polish minister of sport, the Polish ambassador and children from his basketball camp — for what was expected to be a fun week in Phoenix. But while they were arriving in Arizona, Gortat was catching a flight to start his new life in Washington.
“They all was sitting there at a dinner and chatting about everything. I was sitting by myself in a hotel” in Washington, Gortat said, shaking his head. “So the last 24 hours have been hell. It was hard for me, at the beginning, but this is life. This is a business. The NBA is a big, big business.”
Gate receipts, of course, are a big part of that big, big business. The Suns had set up a deal with the Arizona division of the Polish American Congress that would enable fans to purchase no-fee, discounted tickets in "designated Polish sections," with a portion of the proceeds from the tickets being returned to the Congress. The final deadline to order the tickets was Oct. 21; four days later, Gortat was headed east to the nation's capital.

This, as you might expect, didn't make the Arizona division of the Polish American Congress particularly happy. ("This is very disappointing," a representative for the organization wrote on its Facebook page.) But as Dan Steinberg of the venerable D.C. Sports Bog informs us, the Suns are going about the business of making good with the organization:

I spoke to a representative of the Phoenix Suns and he encouraged all Polish fans to still come to the game and show the strength of the Polish community in Arizona as it cheers for their local team.
To make up for this unpleasant situation the Suns have offered all the fans who bought tickets thru the special web site a free ticket to a game on January 24, 2014 at 7PM in which Marcin Gortat will play with the Wizzards against the Suns.
I will let everyone know how these tickets will be issued (they may be issued at Wednesday's game).
That doesn't do much for the 25 people who made the trip from Poland to Phoenix — not exactly a quick, easy and inexpensive bus ride — or for Gortat, who, again, footed the bill for them all to do so. It's a nice touch, though, for the local fans who've already shelled out cash with the express purpose of watching someone of shared heritage play for what was already likely to be an astoundingly bad Suns team, and who would now otherwise have no reason to do so.

Maybe a Congress member showing up solely to watch Gortat play the pivot will wind up falling in love with Eric Bledsoe in the open court, or Goran Dragic off the dribble, or one of the other (fairly thin) reasons to watch the Suns pursue the top overall pick in the 2014 draft. By using the promise of a free look at Gortat down the line to get these same fans in the door tonight, the Suns give themselves the chance to hook them for the long haul. Sure, the chance might be slim, but stranger things have happened ... like, for example, a team scheduling Polish Heritage Night for the first game of the season, then trading away the only Polish player in the NBA five nights before it came around.

Hmmm.....Didn't think about it like that. Not wrong though. Hopefully though he don't let the moment get to his head next game because he did play well.

Now this^^^^^is a player to be proud of if u r a fan....

Wall plays the game hard; Nigga doesn't pout when he doesn't get his way; has made fools of all his critics; can dominate a game even without scoring, but can still make an open shot when needed; and doesn't quit on his team....

He's a top 4 PG any way u slice it......

Johnny Be Good....VERY Good....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Nah...I'm immune to the agenda wars when it comes to Wall, Billy.....

I've been in dude's corner since day one....Debated the usual suspects who tried to make dude out to be a loser. Called bullshit on the No Jacket Johnny stuff....And made it known that dude is the best PG in the East when he wants to be...Better than post knee Rose...Better than Kyrie....Ect....

Just because I think Rondo is overrated and a team cancer doesn't mean we can't all be friends on some WAR shit....lol.....Wall and Rondo have nothing to do with each except for the fact they went to the same college.

That about it....

Wall = that dude u want on your team even if he's a rival....That's all to it...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Nope...That's why we got a search function, my dude....

Murph from Dec 2014.....

"That said, I really believe the Wiz are the only team that can stand in the way of the Bulls(barring health) in the East. They are a problem...And all those No-Jacket Johnny jokes now sound pretty idiotic...Wall is the best PG in the East (with Rose getting his game together)...I've been impressed with his game and the Wiz...."

Hopefully Beal is healthy, Jesus the way he was writhing and crying I thought he at least had a serious sprain.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
