"2016 NBA Free Agency Frenzy Thread"

The Predictions thread is at 250 so I thought it would be a good time to start a new thread for the actual happenings and hiccups of the 2016 free agent chase.

So far, we have rumors of:

Noah to the Knicks
Whitehead to the Mavs for the max

Chandler Parsons wants the max, likely out of Dallas

Durant is 90% on going back to the Thunder.

And a whole lot of players are looking to get paid so much that the owners will lock everyone out during the next CBA negotiations. And GMs and owners seem obliged to pay that kind of cash despite themselves.

Parsons seemingly is what he is at this point. Nice player, but he's been the same guy since his 2nd year so he's not going to be more than he's shown. Maybe even slightly regressed. I wouldn't be shocked if he falls off and really settles in as a role player fairly early too, not sure that body will hold up for more than that.

In response to Reply # 1

He's kind of a better Harrison Barnes (and not just because they both has Waspy names) but not a guy you should ever be paying the max to.

He'd be a great fit for the Blazers, just not at the max that prevents them from signing a legit big man, which is a much bigger need IMO.

I could see him landing on the Grizzlies. A perfect guy to keep them in the playoffs without seriously contending for anything.

but mostly agreed especially with all his injuries.

Hes able to take advantage of his media/social media savvy-ness x whiteness

Dallas fans hate him and cant wait to see him leave though--completely different from when he left Houston.

Even though Dallas didnt land deandre, he has also been a big part of teams recruiting efforts

Woj said the NBA cracked down and called agents and teams today because theres technically NO contact allowed til after 12:01.

So if you set up a meeting already then you musta made contact and broke rules right? Im hoping thats the only reason weve only really heard about Whiteside - Mavs and Noah- Knicks at this point

Under 4 PPG and under 40% shooting for a guy who takes all his shots pretty close to the hoop?

The Knicks or anyone else better be really confident that was all injury related and that the injuries are all healed up if they're going to sink a good amount of money into him.

I think that could lead to a move for someone like Boogie.

The problem with letting the kids cook and signing random guys like Evan Turner is that next year theres even less of a chance at the draft pick.

Can the Lakers franchise sit through 2 more years of suckitude without trading for a star?

You dont do it now --what if some of your young potential busts and has even less trade value?

As I said, he's a high post passer who can space and give length, sets great screens. That's the type of 5 which fits our new system and we got him for 16 per which is about 10.4 under the old cap. That's an incredible deal in a sparse market for centers.

Would love a guy like Batum but he is likely going to get near max, but also think the versatility of Bazemore or Marvin Williams could prove very useful. Doesn't look like Whiteside is coming so we are going to need to focus on a different 5 as well, possibly Mozgov who would fit right into the starting 5, high post + 15 foot spacer role.

The fact is with a 17 win team, you have to build momentum and show concrete wins in order to eventually win over the big fish.

I said it in the Noah post, it's a good annual salary but I wouldn't give more than 2 years. So much wear on his body and we've seen it come to fruition already.

Always surprises me at how lacking people are when it comes to understanding fit and context of player values, let alone how that interaction plays into financial valuations. The only national reporter who seems to actually get it is Ken Berger.

You make some very compelling arguments but I think this one is gonna be bad. He's coming off injury/surgery/and rehab that reportedly didn't go well.

Two years I could live with. I'm ok overpaying a solid veteran on a short term deal but 4 years, even with a team in the 4th, is a very long time.

He was rushed back last season which means he didn't have the musculature reinforcement, that won't be the case after this year. I think his skill-set fits exactly what Luke wants from the starting 5.

Windhorst said it earlier in the year "a team may offer him a 3 year deal which will end up being a discounted deal once he recovers". I think that will be proven to be true.

obviously just with the cap jump he was in line to go from like 5 to 7.5 if he didn't get any raise. let's push it to say $11M even. $16M? some upgrade, yeah, hibbert was 76th in PER and he was 75th. i know it's more of a push than that, but wow.

they lose their draft pick if it isn't top 3 and next year's draft is loaded...especially at the top.

Mozgov won't drastically improve them but once they do start making traction, he's a decent piece and will be replaceable when/if they hit the mark and start to make strides.

A top 3 pick is a total crapshoot. Even with the worst record in the league, it's still only like a 65/35 chance to stay in the top 3. We've gotten lucky 2 years in a row to keep the pick. Without knowing much about the draft depth next year, I think it's time to develop the young talent we have and win as much as possible.

If we keep the pick - great, but I'm counting on it being gone. And this year is the last first rounder we'll have for awhile. And that's ok. For now. We have some solid pieces.

I mainly curious because if Durant is officially and mathematically off the table, that means Wade will have more leverage in terms of what he can ask for.

In response to Reply # 44

If Whiteside announced his signing this morning, it seems he only had time to meet Riley and the Heat after the midnight cap was lifted.

Seems like Dwight Howard is the logical move for the $24 mil I saw on an ESPN crawl that he's asking for.

Has to stink for Dirk this is what he took his massive pay cuts for.

Massive upgrade at the backup PG spot

Add Al Horford (which they cleared room for by trading Jodie Meeks for a 2nd rounder) and this is an A+ offseason with immediate contention.

In response to Reply # 0

Andre Drummond and the Detroit Pistons are nearing agreement on a five-year maximum contract in the $130 million range, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that Drummond and the Pistons have quickly moved to the final stages of negotiations on a verbal agreement since free agency began Friday at 12:01 a.m. ET.

The deal can't be officially signed until a leaguewide moratorium on signings and trades is lifted July 7, but sources said any outstanding minor details would be wrapped up later Friday.

After the sides mutually agreed not to do a contract extension last October, making Drummond a restricted free agent this summer, ‎Detroit's No. 1 offseason priority was always securing Drummond's future as quickly as possible.

The Pistons can announce an agreement in the early days of the period, but will wait for an official signing to allow the Pistons to use up their cap space. They hold Drummond's Bird Rights, which allows teams to go over the cap to retain their own free agents.‎

the other teams Noah and his agent used as leverage to get that reported contract offer from the Knicks. Two or three years I can somewhat understand, but four years for this guy is insane. Going to be hard to trade him if things don't work out for him in a Knicks uniform. Also interesting if Rose doesn't stay in NYC how Noah will react and play as result.

Just as importantly, this contract means the Knicks will have to go bargain basement shopping for shooting guards. Sounds like another Aaron Afallo type signing will occur.

Noah is a professional though and knows the deal. He'll be fine if Rose is gone. He's used to not playing with him anyway.

Juwan didn't have that issue during his prime. Injury issues didn't start until he got to Houston which is also when his career started declining.

He wanted a team that wanted and will keep him. And obviously he loved his time in ny.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Good news is that it'll be easy for him to get traded if/when things don't work out in that horror show in Brooklyn. I just made the mistake of looking at the roster just now. Brook Lopez looks like an elder statesmen next to the guys I saw just now. Kenny Atkinson is a very very patient man to want to take that job.

Or desperate.

Tickets must be dirt cheap given that roster.

The easiest fix is if they can get someone to take brooks contract for some young exciting guys on rookie deals that haven't fully blossomed yet.

That roster is even worse with no Thad young. I really wonder how they will fill in the blanks

Would've loved him to stay in Charlotte but they didn't really prioritize him.

Batum shoulda definitely been the main focus, but prioritizing al and Marvin over him considering the direction of the team was a bit of a head scratcher.

On the flipside they can go after a cheaper guard like lil curry now

Who was a coach in NY when Linsanity happened.

I kind of get it. Go to a coach who believes in him, get to start for the rest of his prime and pray that they somehow improve in the next year or two. I mean, is backing up Kemba for a team that isn't really going to contend really that much better than starting and getting a better shot at endorsements in BK?

It was clear that he wanted stability, a starting spot, and the ability to develop for an org that believes him. Money and winning weren't at the top.

Throw in coming back to NY and its a nobrainer imo

But this shows otherwise. I wonder if they talked about the team and system at all. Clifford did a lot of that to sell him on Charlotte. I mean everyone thought Charlotte would suck, once I caught a glimpse in preseason , I called theyd be fighting for playoffs. But i dont know if signing there showed winning was a priority unless he was reading teh future.

He clearly values all those things above $$ thouugh. He probably couldve gotten at least 15 mil

Probably his closest relationship. Atkinson was working with him before Linsanity started cause he would rebound and work on his jumpshot with him. That obviously continued as the season progressed.

Atkinson is great at player development but I dont know how hell be as a head coach. The Nets roster has nobody to develop.

it was obvious he should opt out but goooooood lawd thassalawtamunney (c) chris rock. second stint in his last three where he's asked to captain a sinking ship. i am sure good teams wanted him as a backup but no way can you turn down that kinda cash. also i am thrilled philly wasnt the team to give it to him. this and to a lesser extent mozgov seem like holding pattern signings. no team with serious ambition would make them.

I think people forget that the agents work for the players interest. If it was just up to the agent, they'd def get the highest deal available. But that ain't what the player necessary wants.

Lin never struck me as a money chaser even after he signed with the deal with houston. He expected the knicks to match as did everybody.

but if he signed this deal for a chance to start for sure and he could have done better, does that mean someone was going to pay him more as a potential 1B/#2 point guard? that doesnt sound right. i dunno, i would not give him the keys to the whip, personally. think he is great in an expanded backup role but that's about it.

he's a talented, big losing ass crybaby.

Yes, he plays for a shitty franchise but he doesn't develop to make them better. He just pouts about how shitty the org is.

If he got better personally, he might have been traded already.

In in the frying pan now but if he goes to a better team and still doesn't win, we need to coffin his ass.

Dude maybe he can be fried for not developing certain key aspects of his own game but he has little or nothing to do with the overall fuckery there. His not being traded has nothing to do with his not being good enough, come the fuck on. It has to do with him not putting a gun to their head. He signed the extension and he hasn't said trade me or I'm not showing up. Either by creating a contract impasse or making a demand are the only two ways he could leave.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Going to be interesting when his free agency situation comes up. I have to think his next up coming deal will be the best time for him to get max top dollars since that'll be the time he'll hit his athletic prime no? Assuming he doesn't get injured before that time.

He can also finish in the paint over shot-blockers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uyl5kvKuBG4

He's the type of guy the Spurs need to sign instead of bringing back washed up David West & playing him at center.

166. "Portland AND Memphis offering Parsons the max?"
In response to Reply # 0

http://cdn3.thr.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/scale_crop_768_433/2011/06/lantern_primary_1.jpg

The Portland Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies have emerged as the primary competitors for free-agent forward Chandler Parsons, sources told ESPN.

The Blazers offered Parsons a maximum contract worth $94.8 million over four years during a meeting in Los Angeles in the opening hours of free agency, sources said. The Grizzlies are also expected to make a max offer in a meeting with Parsons scheduled for Friday, sources told ESPN's Marc Stein.

There is "no chance" of Parsons re-signing with the Dallas Mavericks, a source said.

The divorce comes after the Mavs made it clear that they had no intention of offering a max contract to Parsons, whose two seasons in Dallas both ended prematurely because of surgeries on his right knee.

The Blazers, who are aggressively attempting to make a major addition via free agency for the first time since Brian Grant left Sacramento for Portland almost two decades ago, did not hesitate to meet Parsons' contractual demands.

Portland owner Paul Allen, general manager Neil Olshey, coach Terry Stotts and star point guard Damian Lillard attended the meeting. A source described Parsons as "really impressed" with Portland's presentation, which emphasized how he would fit with the core of a young team that advanced to the second round of the Western Conference playoffs last season.

Parsons has an advocate in Memphis in recently hired assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who formed a close relationship with Parsons during their time together with the Houston Rockets. Sources say point guard Mike Conley also wants Parsons in Memphis if Conley re-signs with the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies are the heavy favorites to keep Conley if their offer for a max contract includes the fifth year that only they can give him.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban attempted to talk Parsons, his partner in last summer's ultimately unsuccessful attempt to recruit center DeAndre Jordan to Dallas, into opting into the final season of the three-year, $46 million deal Parsons signed after spending his first three seasons with the Rockets. Sources say Parsons never seriously considered picking up the option, as he was confident that he'd receive a significant raise and long-term deal this summer because versatile, playmaking forwards are in high demand and short supply.

The Mavs responded by putting Parsons on the backburner to begin free agency, making Conley and Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside their top targets. The Mavs met with Whiteside in New York in the opening hours of free agency and have a Friday afternoon meeting in Dallas scheduled with Conley, sources said.

The Mavs also had a meeting scheduled with Charlotte Hornets small forward Nicolas Batum on Friday, but he struck a deal hours into free agency to stay in Charlotte, according to a league source.

Cuban had consistently described Parsons as a foundation piece, but sources say Dallas decision-makers reached a consensus opinion that they weren't willing to take the risk of offering him a max deal.

Parsons averaged 14.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game during his two-year tenure in Dallas but was only able to play in one playoff game because of his knee injuries.

Parsons, 27, had hybrid microfracture surgery on the knee in spring of 2015, and the rehab from that operation lasted well into the 2015-16 season. The arthroscopic operation Parsons underwent this spring to address a torn meniscus in the knee wasn't nearly as serious as the previous surgery.

Sources say multiple renowned orthopedic specialists have given Parsons clearance to resume full basketball activities and expressed optimism that his knee would not prevent him from having a long, productive NBA career.

Parsons averaged 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 61 games last season, statistics skewed by a slow start as he dealt with strict minutes restrictions. He had the best statistical stretch of his five-year career in the two months before his season ended, averaging 18.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and 47.7 percent from 3-point range and proving he could thrive at power forward in addition to small forward.

The 6-foot-9 Parsons' rare blend of perimeter shooting accuracy and ability as a creator resulted in a list of suitors that also includes the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers.

I mean say what you want about Parsons game. Some of his value is inflated by the relationships he has around the league with players and executives.

Crabbe is too redundant w/ CJ & they needed a better defender which explains the Duck Sauce signing.

But I do feel like if they have cap to burn, they would be far more likely to use it on retaining Crabbe. Hence why I want them to get Pau lol.

In response to Reply # 0

Most of the big names that could make a difference are basically staying in place and all the ones that are changing teams are barely making a dent in the W-L column. I know the Evan Turners and Timofey Mozgovs and Jerryd Bayless's of the world are relatively fairly priced at $14 million a year now but are they really that much of an upgrade over random dudes available at the trade deadline, random bounceback projects, random dudes still on rookie contracts that might break out???

Even if you can afford them under the cap that's still an opportunity cost since you're guaranteeing these guys a roster spot and a big role at that cost.

you can max out a scrub for 1 year to hit the salary floor..no need to lock yourself in long deals.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

no matter how much these teams pay mozgovs and parsonses, there's still only so much talent to go around, and there are still going to be teams striking out on most/all of their targets.

the only question is whether the teams that miss out on ALL the free agents this year are going to double down on the frenzy or if there's going to be enough sour grapes (especially if it turns into cle/g.s. + a team or two out west only having legitimate shots) for these front offices to want to shut down the summer out of spite.

great front offices don't get to look as good for as long, and the terrible ones get out from under old contracts in time to shuffle the deck when they rehire a new gm/coach every couple years.

it's not a real improvement, and it's not much comfort for the fan bases, but the flexibility probably feels good to the dan gilberts of the world.

They've taken, "OK, these mistakes won't hurt us as much. It'll help us financially."

and turned it into, "THESE MISTAKES WON'T HURT US THAT MUCH. THROW MORE MONEY AROUND! WOOHOO!"

When the bill comes due for the rooks and vets already on the roster, they're going to regret a lot of these signings.

In response to Reply # 213

Barring Durant unexpectedly changing teams, all these teams have their core set and no one they can realistically add really changes their future all that much. Either the Dubs can repeat what they did last year or it was just too unsustainable. Either the Spurs get old or they don't. Either the Thunder find that level they had to begin the WCF or they don't. Either the Clips stay healthy and get it together in the playoffs or they get blown up next offseason. Either Cleveland... well they're making the ECF bare minimum regardless and they're playing with house money so whatever.

I mean I'm happy for the Solomon Hills and Ish Smiths of the world getting super paid but who the fuck were they last year? You could have had those guys basically for free last year... if you're a contender you might as well see if you can pry a Shabazz Muhammad away for the right price or if some Richard Jefferson rejuvenation project is out there.

worse cities to live in than new orleans with less talented tent-poles and similar histories of incompetence are signing free agents.

it's hard to find a 1B for a 1A that gets shut down every spring. and it's hard to attract second tier talents without the first tier.

Who gives a shit?

Steph got that contract because his ankles mighta been cooked. And BECAUSE of it, they were able to get serious players that got them a chip and 2 finals appearances. Steph's gonna get the super max next year...but acting like these contracts are apples to apples is stupid.

In response to Reply # 0

Dirk took a massive paycut and now looks stupid because of it.

Wade took one, and then Lebron left. Wade's never been the highest paid player on the Heat.

Duncan took a paycut and it worked out great, but that's an anomaly.

If you're a player - and these contracts are being handed out like they are today - fuck GMs and owners. Get that money. I see no reason a player, even on the downside of their career, should take a paycut as the centerpiece of a team.

s.a. still needs some sort of revelation to happen with their guard play to get another title, and this shit could all disappear again in 2 years.

he could easily end up with the same results as wade and dirk, he just has more titles to look back on as he contemplates rolling the dice again. it might not even be a pay cut with timmay...we don't even know if he's going to be playing at even a 6 million dollar level come the middle of next season.

i think these player cuts are a lot like the gms throwing out these max deals. they know they got a limited window before they're fired (gms) or retire (players), the only difference is the players have a harder job because for them if you're eschewing money you're really looking at title or bust.

Tony got a 3 year 45 mill extension as a backpay when it was obvious the wheel were about to fall off. Riley doesn't seem like he plays the loyalty card as much as Pop/RC & is trying to shakedown Wade.

Basically, Manu/Tony took pay cuts early in their career & Tim reciprocated at the latter end of his career.

BTW Duncan has been taking paycuts and they have helped the Spurs immensely. Martin Brodeur took paycuts in a similar fashion and last I checked dude has three rings and wound up in the finals even at the very end of his career. Tom Brady falls into that category, too. Yeah, we're talking about three really dumb guys who didn't get anything out of it right there.

Dirk should have taken the Lakers' money as one last act of dicking them over a la Steve Nash. But I don't blame him for not doing it. He didn't want to get back pay for past success, he wanted to keep succeeding. It didn't work but the Mavs have been a lot more competitive than the team he would have gone to with their star milking every cent he could out of his hobbled twilight.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Dirk took a pay cut to lure FAs to give him the best shot at a title and guess what? DJ backed out, Parsons got injured then left, and no FAs of note really came. Why take a pay cut? Also, your team could trade you. Loyalty means jack shit so get what you are worth - which is whatever the most from the place you want to play is willing to pay you. I see no reason millionaires should make less so billionaires can make more.

Every aging star that has done it saw the money on a free agent

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

I fucks with Mike Conley and 27 mill per is great for him.

Now KD's 251.7 mill offer from OKC next year makes sense. Bron deserves 40 now. If Mike gets 27 all the perennial all-stars and leaders of their team demand 40 per. No shade at Mike.

Lance is a free agent now and he's also one of the last people I'd want to add to a young squad.

And the pick wouldn't be conveyed until 2121 at the earliest since Grizz already owe two picks to other teams.

And I'm not even a Tobias Harris fan.

The one year part makes it solid but Green's a fucking bum although maybe some small ball with him and Ibaka could be fun to watch. Still, dude makes Harrison Barnes look like an impact player.

They don't want to tie up their cap space since they have to re-sign Ibaka next summer thus just rented Jeff Green for a season to help them make a playoff push.

The Clipper must have really not wanted him back cause with these deals today, 2/20 would have been pretty reasonable to bring him back... though I think if they let Jamal go too they miraculously get some room under the cap to chase someone else.

I'm sure they asked Jeff to wait but his agent figured that the Clips weren't beating 15 million for one year, especially in Florida with no state income tax.

He's using the Knicks as leverage to stress Riley out into giving him those near max dollars.

Can't blame him though. I have to imagine he knows he's nearing the change to get top dollars plus he balled the fuck out given how much he's slowed down over the years.

But I'm not mad at Wade for getting his money though...He's taken pay cuts long enough to be getting that Delly money....

The Chicago Bulls, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks have started a courtship process that has included offers in length of two and three years and upward of $20 million a season – a salary the Heat so far have been reluctant to offer, league sources said.
The Nuggets and Bulls have been among the most aggressive pursuers of Wade, league sources said.

2 million difference isn't enough to go from a perennial playoff team to either of those two.

The Lakers decided not to give Bazemore a $1.1 million qualifying offer in 2014 to make him a restricted free agent.

They wanted to resign bazemore, but he took the longer deal in Atlanta, and y'all see how that worked out.

Lakers make Ryan Kelly, not Kent Bazemore, a restricted free agent

Just so many players that aren't given a chance or teams miss on because they have some preconceived notion in their heads...whether that be the GM or head coach or someone else.
