"Under The Dome"

anybody check this out last night? I thought it was a dope pilot. good story, interesting characters. and, when the dome comes in to cover the town...it's a damn shame what they did to that cow. Haha! I'm gonna watch it again because I think i missed a few details.

The shape of the thing and the mystery behind it's existence could have been used as a reveal and they chose not to do it.

Doesn't really matter in the long run.

It really doesn't... so why are you so bothered by it?

And I disagree about making it a reveal. That's a terrible idea IMO.

A well-executed reveal is hardly, if ever, a terrible idea.

If the dome-shape of the thing plays at all into the storyline (which it does because they are trapped inside), why not use a reveal? They still have to reveal all other information about it.

Why would anything be assumed by these characters? As far as any of them can tell, there's an invisible wall that stretches as far as the eye can see. How could they possibly know that it's a dome, or that they're trapped in it without a bird's-eye perspective?

The information was glossed-over to keep the story going; I get that. But it was still poorly executed. I expect to see that kind of corner-cutting in film, but this production has 13 hours to play with. There's time to build.

Oh, and you read too much into my reply. Just because I said it was poorly done, doesn't mean I'm upset by it. Like I said, it doesn't matter. It was a choice and I disagree with it.

But please, I'm curious, what are you thinking would be wrong with a more structured approach?

In response to Reply # 12

Not the characters.

Further, it was revealed to some in the showin a reasonable way, hearing the miliatary call it a dome during radio communication. Those characters found out, they didn't just guess. To assume the military couldn't figure that out is a little much IMO, and so for it to be revealed in that way is no big deal.

Still, WE already know. It's in the title. Using it as a "reveal" of some sort would be anticlimactic under any circumstance, no matter how shocked the people in the story are.

In Lost, for example, the big reveal that there was an actual community of homes that looked like a normal neighborhood was a major reveal because we didn't know.

Others on the island? There was a man living in the hatch? A submarine? Huge reveals.

We may have had suspicions and theories and what have you, but it was speculation at best and we didn't KNOW what was what until they showed US.

A show called Under The Dome where we already know they're under a dome doesn't need a "big reveal" for us to know they're under a dome because we already know.

I read that, also. I'd like to see them wrap up the story in 13 episodes and not try to drag it out just for the sake of dragging it out. But the show had 13 million viewers last night so if they continue to get strong numbers then it's safe to say they wont be wrapping it up anytime soon

I watched the first episode because I read an article saying CBS finally wised up and made a show that can compete with cable dramas but this might be the most stereotypical network show I've ever seen. The dialogue is especially bad. It's sub-Falling Skies caliber

i liked his character. also the creepy butterfly knife boy that turns out to be his son. i liked the candystriper girl he captured too. didn't like the dude she hit on or the lady that invited him to stay the night, we all know where that's heading.

i also liked that hank mentioned that the cop had a bum ticker. i love cop characters with bum tickers. then didn't it explode when he touched the wall?

so the dome is some kind of energy field that can trigger seizures and pacemaker explosions? the seizing people were saying something about falling leaves. it seemed like hank may have some prior knowledge with his whole panic room shelter and propane stockpile.

i don't wanna look it up though because it was based off a story so i'll probably end up spoiling everything.

...someone pointed this out to me about the book and how the first two episodes were weak compared to the book but c'mon no movie or tv show will be the same as the book, you can't have a narrator thru out the film, this is visual not just audio.

Anyway, so far I'm digging this mini-series but still trying to figure out if this is going to be a gov't conspiracy or alien sci-fi story behind the dome.

Also the son of the richest man in town is psycho, you know Stephen King had to throw in a person like that in his stories.

i missed part of the previous episode before the outbreak one, from the point where junior finds julia sneaking up on her to the end. my station broke in with tornado alerts and they never reshowed the episode, then i was on vacation last week and missed the stream.

something happened to make things ok between barbie, jr and big jim, but i didn't see what. maybe barbie saved big jim from the fugitive?

hank schrader / big jim is the best. i loved when he told jr to quit hiding behind his mother's skirt. knocking down the house with the bulldozer was bad ass. looks like he is gonna have to make some big decisions between coming clean or doing more dirt to cover up what he, jr, duke and the rev have done.

i liked the dj's and the idea of intercepting rf transmissions. it seemed like phil knew more about the husband than what he told.

also is julia going to forgive barbie for lying because he saved her? i don't really like that part of the story but it seems like it will be important for the overall plot.

who seemed to know about the dome? who was acting weird before the dome came? big jim, duke, the rev, julia's husband, and barbie. anyone else?

then there's the seizures and pink stars falling in lines, wtf?

i'm ready to see the military try to bomb the dome. who will become the first cannibal?

The part about the military bombing the dome was scary but I'm not surprised about the outcome; but obviously the two kids and Junior are the three that the storyline is really focusing on now.

So no reason to keep watching season 1 since all I want is answers and could care less about the actual characters.

the book's timeline was basically over a 2 week period, I already can tell I'm not gonna like where they go with this. I already hate that they have changed characters up, had them behave differently than in the book, added characters that didnt exist in the book, etc. Its basically like they just took the idea of a dome covering this town from the book and said screw everything else. It'll probably have a different ending a dome origin than what was in the book.....

I don't know if their cheap in terms of $$$ spent on them, but cheap in terms of the feel of their production value. This shit feels and looks like a typical CBS show, on some Walker Texas Rangers type shit. None of these actors embody anything remotely memorable.

HBO could have really made this show something. Or AMC.

...the purpose of picking up a second season before following the original ending that Stephen King wrote, and this is probably the reason why the show is going nowhere in terms of a plot cause they're only coming up with new situations that doesn't got a damn thing to do with the why there's a fucking dome over the town but how people are going crazy and nomad cause of limited resources.

Now after 20 to 30 minutes into the each episode I just get bored and start surfing the net while listening cause nothing is really keeping my attention especially when no real info is being told until the last 8-10 minutes of the show.

Also I don't give fuck about Big Jim stock-piling pro-pain, this new lady showing up who's making drugs, and how she knows all about Barbie's past; also why can't we get a POV from people (basically the gov't) from outside the dome and what they are doing.

but especially this

My wife and I were seriously like "WTF" at this lady showing up out of the blue. So in the past 8 days she's been hiding out in a house. And now she wants to get people hooked on drugs? For what? So she can sell them to the townspeople? What kind of effin' sense does that make? They established two episodes ago that money has no value now they've been stuck in this dome for a week. People would rather have batteries. What purpose is there to sell drugs to people when there's an effin' impenetrable, invisible dome over your city? WTF?

And on another note. Why are people being so non chalant about there being a dome over their town? I mean, people are driving around town. Going to the diner for breakfast. What sense does that make? I would think that 90% of the town would be doing whatever it took to figure a way out. Nope.

Another episode of nothing happening. This show is ridiculous. NONE of the characters is even remotely compelling and the storyline is moving nowhere. I'm only watching now because I committed to it. I need to see how this first season ends. But I will not be back next summer for Season 2.

I'm in until the season finale, but it's getting tougher and tougher to watch each week. Absolutely NOTHING happens from week to week. It's kinda ridiculous at this point. This show has been on for about 8 episodes and what have learned?

1) There's a big dome over the town.
2) It makes electronics explode.
3) Two kids have some connection to the dome.
4) The dome causes visions.
5) There's a glowing egg in the middle of town.

That's it. And pretty much none of those things (outside the existence of the dome) create compelling television.

But it is getting harder. I think the most telling thing about the show is that in this entire town, there are only 3 people actually trying to figure out what the dome is, and two of them are kids. Everybody else is on some weird, "Whelp... there's a dome, and this is how we live now." But that's what gets these kind of shows greenlit. Someone coming up with some stupid outrageous premise and then selling it with the "...and then we explore how society would react." Which *is* interesting, and some of the best sci-fi comes from that same place. The unfortunate thing here is the writers don't seem to have a handle on writing how people would really react.

There are by my count 3 quality characters (Barbie, Big Jim, and Joe) whose storylines are interesting... 4 with potential (reporter chick, Joe's sister, my two moms and female cop) who could make for good support if a little more time was spent actually fleshing them out, and then one horrible, annoying character who brings the show to a grinding halt each week, yet the writers seem to keep trying to make work, despite the fact that he.... ah, fuck it, it's Junior.

So, Im still watching. But only because I have free time. But it is almost a chore at this point.

The dome's been up a couple of weeks now and people are nonchalant about it. They're driving cars around town, eating at the diner. Nobody is trying to figure out what's going on other than those kids? That's kinda ridiculous.

I honestly don't think any of the characters are compelling though. Maybe Barbie and Joe's sister, but the others are lame. Reporter chick trying to be a reporter. Umm...you're under a dome. Ain't no reporting to be done. The kids are stupid because they won't tell ANYONE ANYTHING they know that's going on. If it were me, I'd be telling folks stuff everything so we could find a way out. I hate Nori, she's just the worst character. That farmer dude was a horrible character too. How he gonna try and become the king of this dome by withholding water AND food? GTFOH! The whole town should have risen up against that dude rather than the six dudes they found.

And yet...I keep watching.

I'm trying to figure that out, so money isn't worth anything to them except this chick (who's trying to strike it rich, waiting for the dome to disappear) and all these other people are fighting, having wild sex, getting drunk, and stealing supplies for this chick to make her new drug?

I'm sure if a real dome surrounded a city, yeah it's going to be the weird ones, thieves, drug addicts, & violent freaks, trying to form a place where they can have fun like it was 2999 (lol, I was going to write 1999 but that's behind us now and nobody was partying like it was the end of the world) but sometimes I feel like the writers are just throwing crazy shit in the storyline for filler, this ain't Twin Peaks this is a mini-series...oh yeah I forgot it got picked up for a second season.

But I hung on just to see it through to the season finale. That's probably one of the worst heavily hyped shows in history. You couldn't pay me enough money to watch that again. I heard they killed ole girl in the season finale. They need to kill everyone else and just put 46 minutes of an empty dome on TV every Monday. That would be more entertaining.
