"Anyone else excited about Avatar? (Cameron) (TRAILER + FOOTAGE)"

Anchored, to prevent a hundred people posting it later, lol.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/

Aside from the fact that Michelle Rodriguez is in it, I am real amped for this shit.

James Camron is one of my favorite writer/directors and he's clearly been working on this movie for over a decade now.

I am a sucker for outer space flicks, and IMO, there hasn't been one to even compete with 2001 to this day. My problem with space flicks is they are always super corny and too much "hollywood" influence with unrealistic physics (i.e., spaceships making sound, people walking around in anti-gravity, etc.)

I doubt this movie will exhibit anything close to the realism that 2001 did, but the plot is realistic in that it is based on astronauts exploring our neighboring solar system.

If executed properly, I feel this could be an amazing movie. however it also could easily be a huge slop (as space movies often are).

i don't think it was generic at all. what would have really been generic would be to show a bunch of wack ass aliens or some space ship scenes.

instead, they showed none. the shit thats really got me amped is the part where it said after the 'million, million, million' visible stars that there might be a world and 'we'll take u to one'.

that shit was totally aimed at the demographic people who watch the history channel and shows like 'nova' on public television. the fact they DIDN'T show anything that would normally be expected has me even more intrigued and wanting to see it more.

Lebron couldn't win a chip without two superstars from his draft class. He didn't just need help. The nigga needed the cheat code to enable god mode.(c)Kira

And just because they didn't show any aliens doesn't mean it's not a fake teaser... and Cameron's probably not going to show any aliens anyway until the official trailer hits...

Fox and Imax break new ground with free 'Avatar' preview next week

August 12, 2009 | 3:55 pm

Hollywood's sneak-preview tradition is about to get a James Cameron overhaul.

On Monday, 20th Century Fox will launch an unusual offer on the website for its Cameron-directed film "Avatar": free tickets for an early look at 16 minutes of footage from the futuristic thriller that will be shown in more than 100 Imax 3-D theaters around the world.

With two screenings on Friday, Aug. 21 (at 6 and 6:30 p.m.), the "Avatar" preview will include an introduction from Cameron and some new footage not shown during July's Comic-Con International convention in San Diego. "Avatar," which will be released in December, is Cameron's first feature since 1997's Oscar-winning hit "Titanic," which generated global ticket sales of more than $1.8 billion.

The unprecedented promotion -- which includes more than 30 Imax 3-D screens overseas -- signals just how much Fox has riding on its massive "Avatar" investment (more than $240 million in production costs) and how Imax is trying to position its theaters as the destination for the highly anticipated movie. Imax screens generated about $65 million in ticket sales for "The Dark Knight" last year when the Batman sequel was shown in 94 Imax screens; "Avatar" will be playing at more than 225 Imax theaters when it opens Dec. 18.

Advance screenings of movie footage for the press and at events such as Comic-Con are fairly common for big-budget Hollywood releases. But it's unprecedented for a studio to show an extended excerpt of a film in such a broad public setting months before it hits theaters.

Fox is not paying Imax to use its theaters for the preview, though the studio is bearing the cost of producing and distributing the digital prints. Imax will provide 3-D glasses.

In what’s sure to be a mad grab among sci-fi fans, tickets will be given away a first-come, first-served basis on the “Avatar” website (www.avatarmovie.com) at noon PST Monday.

“I think that there’s not enough of an understanding of what show business means," Greg Foster, president of Imax Filmed Entertainment said of the sneak preview. "You can’t have business without showmanship. What Fox and ('Avatar' producer) Lightstorm Entertainment and Imax are doing is the personification of the correlation between those two words -- 'show' and 'business.'"

Not coincidentally, Fox will also release the first "Avatar" trailer in theaters around the world next Friday.

I'm excited to see this being made into a real live movie as well but I'm not going to the theaters just to see a fucking trailer, I'll wait till Current TV shows it.

I fucked up and saw they doing at the knockoff IMAX 10 minutes from tha crib. And since I'm not moving back to Brooklyn until the 30th (NY is the best IMAX ever tho) I might as well go to that cheap ass "IMAX" theater they just built at tha local multiplex for only 16 minutes.

Gonna be a great nite. This + Inglorious Basterds rite after + getting shitty with the jumpoff afterwards = perfect nite.

not sure how i feel abt this. I was hoping for a movie experience that strayed from the cliché hollywood story line (i.e., conflict, love, protagonist/antagonist, good vs evil, etc.)

seems as though all the typical factors are at play here. it would be nice for a movie of this caliber to be both visually AND cognitively innovative.

also, for some reason I had the idea that the ET's were a technologically advanced race, but it doesn't appear that way from these previews.

But I'll see it in December with my 3D spectacles. I think the film is beautiful but not the greatest in CG cinematography. I can't put it, but it doesn't look as real as people claim to be. If anything, it's just another CG film that's going to be 10x better than most films this year. We'll see. Hope it meets my expectations.

do you have a 3d lcd? not to be snarky, but this is one of those times where the theater experience will/should/must trump all other viewings.

my question is how will this translate to home viewings. will the dvd/blu ray ship with 3d glasses?

will it even be in dvd format?

as you said it doesn't even look that impressive on a screen, but...you never know

Visually it's fantastic; vibrant and lush and all that pretty descriptive shit...

Story-wise, however, from what I could gather, I did get a Dances with Wolves-ish vibe... and Cameron still can't write dialogue...

Of course, this is all based on 16 minutes of what felt like randomly-selected scenes... he could be sitting on a finely-written masterpiece (but I wouldn't count on it)... but yeah, I'ma be there in (the real) IMAX 3D when this hits...

In response to Reply # 51

I watched the trailer yesterday (the day before Avatar Day) and thought it was hot garbage. This was on my 24" HDTV computer monitor, in 1080p from Apple. It looked to me like Cameron had gone George Lucas on us and created a bunch of Jar Jar Binks for us to be pissed at for getting our hopes up over.

But I still made time today to go to two screenings at the only TRUE Imax theater in Seattle.

About 3 minutes into the first screening, I realized I had a WTF look on my face with a big smile.

At the 2nd screening, (45 minutes later) some dude yelled out "Holy Shit!" after the second sequence. The crowd erupted, because that's pretty much what everyone was thinking.

After the final sequence (at the 2nd screening) same dude did it again, and the crowd erupted with him (in laughter and applause) again.

Keep in mind, Cameron said those scenes were only in the FIRST half of the film. Can't wait. Only 4 months to go. Avatar has been at the top of my list of movies to see for a long time now.

my ONLY issue was the dialogue being filled with really lame one-liners that threaten to take me out of my magical fantasy moment. the lead actor i worrying me a bit.

but the atmosphere/visuals/vision/etc??? this shit is what i've been WAITING for in movies: someone to finally bring dreamy beautiful fantasy elements back to sci-fi. i'm not even into CGI like that (heavy overuse of cgi almost always bothers me greatly, and i hope models/costumes/etc would make a comeback) but this gets a complete pass. this cgi works because this whole movie is like a high-tech fluorescent van gogh and doesn't need to pass itself off as photo-realistic.

the creatures they turn in to look like a mix between Abe Sapien & Jar Jar Binks.

it looked like if you play world of warcraft or play with magic cards, you'll get a hard on for this movie.

i'll still give it a chance because they didn't give you much context at all with those random scenes, and everything did look very vivid, but I definitely thought the Avatar bodies or whatever looked like jarjar binks & abe sapien's turquoise fruitcake offsprings

But if it makes you feel groovy to roll with the girly Disney cartoon reference, then rock on...

The rest of us "fucking liars" peeped out the similarities to the Kev Costner joint before your big eureka moment, however... and before you fix your fingers to embark on yet another tiresome trolling mission, you might want to read this:

latimes.com:

>Geoff Boucher: There’s also maybe some heritage linking it to “Dances With Wolves,” considering your story here of a battered military man who finds something pure in an endangered tribal culture.

James Cameron: Yes, exactly, it is very much like that. You see the same theme in “At Play in the Fields of the Lord” and also “The Emerald Forest,” which maybe thematically isn’t that connected but it did have that clash of civilizations or of cultures. That was another reference point for me. There was some beautiful stuff in that film. I just gathered all this stuff in and then you look at it through the lens of science fiction and it comes out looking very different but is still recognizable in a universal story way. It’s almost comfortable for the audience – “I know what kind of tale this is.” They’re not just sitting there scratching their heads, they’re enjoying it and being taken along. And we still have turns and surprises in it, too, things you don’t see coming. But the idea that you feel like you are in a classic story, a story that could have been shaped by Rudyard Kipling or Edgar Rice Burroughs.

GB: Or Joseph Conrad…?

Emerald Forest JC: Yes, exactly. And I think returning to classic tales is a powerful thing. Look, right now is a special time because we can basically do anything we imagine. I mean you have to work hard at it, and you’ve got to have the technique and you have to be willing to throw money at the problem. Sometimes you have to be a little bold and go out on a limb. But if you can imagine it, you can do it. That’s why we’re seeing this renaissance of visual imagination. It’s just a growth. Films look better now than they’ve ever looked. Sometimes they get a little lost in it though. I’ll go to a “Transformers” film for the fun of seeing the spectacle but, personally, my soul craves a little more story, a little more meat on the bone and characters and that sort of thing. Look, I think it's about finding a balance between story and all of this gimmickry. I think I veer toward classicism, being solidly rooted in the classic stuff. I mean really old-school science fiction. This is a movie I would have loved to have seen when I was a 14-year-old kid in 1968.

Pocahontas or Dances with Wolves?

Also, the CGI wasn't THAT great. Wasn't as good as the CGI in Beowulf...or the Final Fantasy movie.

>Pocahontas or Dances with Wolves?

that's already been settled by Cameron himself. He's already said what HE was going for in response #75. Plus... if you watch a trailer of Pocahontas... then a trailer of Dances with Wolves... and then the trailer of Avatar... And you can't tell the difference... I'm not sure if i can help you with that problem.

>Also, the CGI wasn't THAT great. Wasn't as good as the CGI in
>Beowulf.

SISTA PLEASE! Beowulf!?! Up had better animation than that joint. let's be real. Frame for Frame, Beowulf is not ANYWHERE close to Avatar

>or the Final Fantasy movie.
If talking about 'Advent Children' then GTFOH! But if you're refering to Square's first joint (i can't remember the name of it) then I would say that Avatar is on-Par with it and making strides, in many ways, to push the animation forward.

did you watch this trailer in the theatre? or at home?

no diss but come on... ya'll acting like this is the worst film this year or something.

I'm extremely excited about Avatar, but I also realize in the end, foam rubber Ninja Turtles from 1989 will seem more lifelike.

the trailers are underwhelming

We need some new sci-fi that pushes boundaries and explores new concepts

Its 2009

Hell we have a Hadron Collider that may locate new dimensions and the particle that gives mass to everything

And our sci-fi movies are Dances With Wolves meets The Smurfs in space
