"Gang Starr has the best 4 album run right?"

Step in the Arena through Moment of Truth are classics to me. OutKast is close imo but Stankonia got some tracks I don't love. Still a dope album! I would include De La Soul too but I'm not the biggest fan of 3 Feet High and Rising. De La Soul Is Dead was my introduction to them and that's a much better album imo. What other groups/artists have great 4 album runs? I'm talking hip hop but it doesn't have to be hip hop related. I know Stevie and Prince will get mentioned.

******************************************
Falcons, Braves, Bulldogs and Hawks

Geto Boys, Poison Clan, UGK, Eightball & MJG, OutKast, Goodie Mob

The fact that he lost the original Tical, Deck's original debut, and most likely the second round for everyone else in two floods is one of hip hop's greatest what-if's. That run could have easily have been twice as long.

In response to Reply # 0

That is if you count Section.80?

I've never looked at Gangstarr's run in a historical sense. Maybe it's because while I think Premier and Guru's are as consistent as any act in hip-hop, I, personally, don't have many 'kirk out' moments with their work, like I did OutKast or De La or with RZA's work.

I can't and won't argue that their run isn't historic. Premier is one of the GOATs for a reason and Guru was just the perfect complement to his beats. I wasn't a big fan of their work growing up but I've become a big fan of theirs as an adult and I see why others revere them.

But on a personal level, I don't hold their run as well as De La's or OutKast's or Kendrick's.

From a strict 'spitting' perspective, you may be right. But the depth of emotions Kendrick touches on and the level of detail he puts into his lyrics to construct his narrative are immense. Plus it's also his most accessible album if that makes sense. I personally feel it's his best work.

But I can also see that for as great as his albums are to listen to, they're really hard to come back to. Probably because they're like Barry Jenkins movies but our small attention spans have us all listening to the equivalent of film shorts.

In response to Reply # 10

It's a good set but for me his run starts with GKMC... but maybe I'm alone in that. It feels like an exceptional debut but not necessarily an exceptional record.

GKMC/TPAB/DAMN is a heck of a run though. Don't know how anyone can not like DAMN -- in terms of regular rotation listening, I probably go back to it and GKMC the most.

I also like S.80 and GKMC best, they are the most musically palatable for my tastes.

But like you, I respect the vision and am a trillion percent on board with the content of TPAB, obviously. But musically it didn't grab me either. It's almost a chore to get through from a production standpoint. Just not for me sonically. I gave it a spin this past summer to see if maybe my opinion would change, but it did not. Haha.

So this is really interesting to me. I'm pretty similar: I really love TPAB as a whole, will easily call it a classic, but it's not something I want to listen to often. And even if you break it down track by track, it's kind of a hard sell. It's the whole that counts. And I think that you hear this *way* more about TPAB than really any other hip hop record I can think of.

I don't have any issues with this from an artistic standpoint but it's kind of unique in hip hop, I think. And it's really hard for me to pin down *why* it is the case with TPAB.

It's not nearly as good as the three classics (to me) that came after it. But it's a really good debut.

Either way, if you include Section.80 the list is backheavy. More so than any other artist listed in the thread.

I love Gang Starr like everyone else (or maybe I don’t lol) but it’s not on the same level.

Hard To Earn is the second best Gang Starr album to me behind Moment Of Truth and that dropped in 94 and wasn’t better than OutKast’s debut.

OutKast only gets better from there.

There’s just something special about what Kast represented.

I agree, I don’t love everything on Stankonia but the highs of that album are so much higher than the weakest Gang Starr album in their run which is Step Into The Arena in my opinion.

And y’all can say what you want about Beats, Rhymes, & Life but that shit is classic to me and give ATCQ a better run than Gang Starr as well.

lol...get all the way the FUCK out

we are talking about hip hop right?? stankonia is a great record... a great record but its just as much pop as it is rap

comparing that to step in the arena...is like comparing kendrick to bandana

it dont even make sense

and step in the arena is fucking better

just to get a rep? check the technique? are bonafide hip hop classics!

People tend to forget just how great Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em is. EPMD's run was flawless. And I'm a huge fan of those first four Redman albums.

I'd probably put those three ahead of Gang Starr, but behind De La.

Exactly.

Can't have a 4 album run that skips albums. That's not a run.

Runs must contain consecutively released albums. No skips.

If we leave out "...Or Stay Tuned," I prefer the run of:

or even

He was the first 'hardcore' MC I got into and so his work has a special place in my hip-hop heart. I even liked a lot of Lethal Injection. That's how deep my appreciation of his work was.

...look at all these amazing runs by all of these amazing artists.

And people still wanna put Nas near the top of all-time lists because of ONE classic 8 1/2 song album performance.

You've gotta be kidding me.

I wanted to post DOOM today too but it's a little more convoluted w/him obviously cuz he rapped under so many different monikers and shit haha.

But Doomsday, Take Me to Your Leader, Vaudeville Villain, Madvillainy ? C'mon now.

i think at 3 albums they can go up against any 3 other 3 albums. for me phrenology did it too and i think it has aged well. i still think its a bit of a step down but no more than other "weaker" albums that have been listed in this post.

Be doesn't have a "bad" song but it's safe and therefore a little boring relative to EC, which has a few really bad songs, but was riskier and therefore more interesting. Especially since all artists involved were in their primes.

and Resurrection and ODIWAMS are really good albums that diehard Common fans will argue are classics.

Common definitely had a great run, so he deserves a mention but I don’t think EC is strong enough to give him the “best 4 album run in history.” But I realize that’s a polarizing album where there is a vocal group that absolutely love it, and will see this differently.

That's exactly what it is, soulful but hardhitting. In perfect balance, on both albums.

i damn sure aint a fan of his personal/political antics or his last few musical projects but his 1st five shit on everyone elses easily.

thats an insane amount of consistency...even including the album at the time that was considered his experimental album (something a whole laundry list of good artists couldnt pull off).

But I think I still love the story about how it was made (the Hawaii thing) more than I love the actual end product/music.

The first 3 are unassailable tho, IMO. Whether you loved him or hated him, or thought he was overrated/not that talented or the most talented producer on earth, there's no denying the magnetism his music had over the course of those few years.

All of these albums have too much filler to be 100% classics. It's unfortunate; they're all albums with very high highs but also a lot of clunker weight pulling it all down.

Putting aside thoughts on 808s or MBTDF, I just don't think these albums make the cut, which tank his eligibility from the start.

Your criteria was 4 album run, so that means his 4 are:

Doomsday
Geedorah
VV1
Madvillainy

That still may not top Gangstarr in your eyes (and I think I'd agree, for the record) but DOOM is certainly in the conversation.

Given that we’ve got 100+ replies and everyone with a strong run is getting mentioned, then he certainly deserves a mention.

He’s got 3 undisputed classics, and an album that had 2 really bad songs but otherwise has some of his best rapping ever, for his first 4 albums.

And when you throw in the impact that his 4 album run had on hip hop?? Cmon.

I know Walking With a Panther was a “fall off” back then but a lot of that was image and narrative and him not being Native Tongues or P.E. and “saying something”.

Looking at it now, he’s got one of the stronger 4 album runs.

LL gets lost in these GOAT conversations. Maybe because his peak happened relatively early in the history of hip hop. At least relative to Gangstarr, The Roots, OutKast, Tribe, etc.

That he's probably more well known as an actor than as an MC, probably factors in as well.

But his early work is classic. No doubt.

I agree on Public Enemy and Kanye, and Ghostface Killah has my favorite Wu Tang solo albums. But has anyone mentioned this site's founder's group, The Roots? From Phrenology thru How I Got Over (a sadly overlooked masterpiece IMO). Though not classics by acclamation, they sound that good to me. One notable critic seems to think so too:

https://www.robertchristgau.com/get_artist.php?name=The+Roots

Tricky (1990s) and MIA (2000s-10s) are also hip-hop related and with a great 4+ album run

Non-rap mentions since the original poster asked: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Lucinda Williams, Sly and the Family Stone, PJ Harvey, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Nirvana, Al Green, Steely Dan, The Clash, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Marley, the Grateful Dead.

And there are countless jazz artists who consistently made great albums: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman... I could go on.

That is fine. It sold 5 million plus, but perhaps that was all because of good marketing. And anyway, one may need a sense of wit and irony (and dare I say fun?) to appreciate him to begin with. Not all rappers can traffic in moralistic street-raps or tough-guy fantasies or formalistic flow. Not that there is anything terribly wrong with such things. But by those standards, yes, perhaps not a great album.

Yes. Ignore me. Resort to ad hominems like "dumb" and "poo poo" and "foolish," and superficial epithets like "highs" and "filler" and "quality," without any nuanced discussion or argument for or against, while regurgitating the same lists from the subcultural canon and patronizing anyone who defies it. And, of course, ignore me. Deeply sorry that expressing my opinion warrants expulsion from a free music forum. Apologies for offending your tastes.

Moralistic street tales and Tough Guy fantasies? We’re on The Roots website. Where is that coming from?

Well, I will be the first to admit I am weird to begin with lol.

But I did not see why me proposing Eminem's albums meant I should "leave." That offended me, for my sake and Eminem's, who deserves more respect here.

I don't see how EPMD boasting about "You're God damn right punk, stay outta my way, Cause I clock G's while you clock Z's", or Guru claiming "I will make a strong vow to make things right, Ignite the mic, get hype and all that", are any better or more artful than Eminem employing offensive and humorous content to mock our puritanical culture's outrage police ("Rain Man"), or to play out a pained character study of a woman-abuser that offers insight into the pathology of something enduringly real in our f****-up society ("Kim", which resembles Ghostface Killah's "Wildflower" in this way).

He is a genius of transgressive art, and a pretty damn skilled and clever rhymer. He touches on deep-seated male insecurities and neuroses (and their frequent manifestations in society) that most rappers are too cool to consider being open about, and he does so in ways that provoke laughter, thought, and chills.

And it does matter that an album sells a lot. It is a reflection of our collective consciousness, or at least the shared values and sensibilities of a large-enough amount of people we have to live amongst and care about. He has sold more than 220 million records around the world. He obviously has some connection to our collective humanity, so maybe we owe it to ourselves to re-examine if we're missing something.

In the opinion of HipHopDX, at least the Slim Shady LP, Marshall Mathers LP, and The Eminem Show were a "classic" series:

https://hiphopdx.com/editorials/id.2678/title.3-for-3-9-artists-who-crafted-a-triad-of-fantastic-albums-in-a-row#signup

There are lots of critics and writers who can speak on the merits of his music better than I can. Here is one of them:

https://www.robertchristgau.com/xg/music/eminem-lat.php

https://www.robertchristgau.com/xg/music/eminem-cp.php

https://www.robertchristgau.com/xg/music/eminem-06.php

Also, that HipHopDX article brought another name to mind (Missy Elliott) and another issue (have any female rappers been mentioned here?)

I don’t see what’s wrong with those PMD and Guru rhymes. I don’t see a problem with their content.

The beats on their albums blow away those on Encore.

The other person told me to leave.

I did not say anything's wrong with them. My point was that I did not see how they're any more special than Em's. And I just find more artistic value and entertainment in his work.

The beats are great on their albums, and probably their best qualities. But I think the beats on Encore suit Eminem's rapping better than any other beats would, and the flow of the guest rappers too (like 50 Cent on "Never Enough", which I'm listening to right now and can't resist moving to the rhythm of the beat in conjunction with the voice, and now it's flowing seamlessly into "Yellow Brick Road"...) So I think that's what makes it work altogether. I am judging it holistically.

I could dance more to the EPMD beats. But the Encore beats are more interesting to my ear, like the marching rhythm and pensive piano notes leading to that soaring chorus of child-like voices on "Toy Soldiers", underscoring the loss of innocence in the subject matter.

As an album in and of itself, Encore is good to me. And alongside the previous three, with SSLP and MMLP great ones for me, I think that is why it is a great run, historically speaking. As you know, it is not often that artists of any genre put out consistently good ones, especially in the 21st century, when the album has lost importance.

Also, some of the functions of the sounds on Encore are in the tradition of transgressive art, more than in the formalism of hip hop beats. "Puke", for example, intersperses puking sounds from a female voice among the male narrator's vile vindictive petty barbs at his ex girlfriend. My interpretation is that this functions to put the listeners off from those sentiments, even though hatred at one point or another is just human nature, and who hasn't at one point or another hated their ex over something out of emotion and not rational thinking? But Em being Em, he exaggerates and heightens it thru shock and obscenity to make a point, and this also gives it an edge of ridiculousness that can make you chuckle, even if reluctantly. Another interpretation is that what the narrator is saying is actually making the ex puke. And it is also in line with Em toying with the idea of rap as a verbal construct (that it can be words not meant to be taken literally) and satirizing the seriously obscene female-exploitative rhymes of mainstream rap around that time. And there is interesting interplay between the beat and the synthesized violin crescendos... On the surface, it might seem like a forgettable track, but there are different levels of merit to those songs. It is all about perspective.

Forget the comic genius or the harrowing tales of violence. I honestly don't know how anyone can deny the simple yet penetrating underclass angst of songs like "If I Had" and "Rock Bottom". Unless they've never struggled in the real world, or just lack or lost empathy or compassion, which I gather Em's worst critics probably have (and I don't mean anyone here).

These are the kinds of songs that make you feel you're not crazy or alone in such a universal struggle, one that leads you to feeling fed up with all the conveniently pious, uppity, unrealistic standards bludgeoning us in the media and from elites. In the real world, sh*t happens, pressures provoke bad behavioral tendencies, and without people provoking thought about them, it would have little chance of getting better. These songs are still relevant, 20 years later. That is my connection to those particular songs.

The Roots' How I Got Over album resonates in the same way, albeit with a more sophisticated, mature approach to exploring moral, existential, and financial anxieties. That means much more to me in adjudging something a classic. Why else would a work of art endure the test of time if it does not connect on some universal and human level? That is a big reason why these albums belong in the same discussion.

What are your connections to the albums you've named?
