"Songs that are basically the same song. "

Am I bugging or is Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and Jody Watley's "Looking For A New Love" the same damn song?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9uizdKZAGE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQL-B3PNkeI

Or how about The Pointer Sisters Automatic and El Debarges's Rhythm Of The Night?

Automatic has a more haunting feeling. Rhythm is cheery. Automatic has a more rhythmic snap while Rhythm of the night is more flowing.

Although worth noting that "My Prerogative" bit the melody on the chorus from The Redding's "Remote Control"

But there's a reason why producers like Daz and others who claim Dr. Dre just bit their work haven't gone on to have the same level of success without him.

Dre has a great ear and knew how to mine the beats or demos of other producers to create great music. There's something to be said for knowing what sounds great and turning that into a song, even if you didn't actually create the art yourself.

I'm also a HUGE Dre fan. He, Snoop and Cube were my intro to hip-hop when I was in 2nd grade so I'm hella biased as well haha.

But I think Dre did both. He found samples himself/made beats himself, but also allowed other producers to bring him skeleton beats/samples and made them good as well.

some people, like Dr. Dre, aren't always the best beatmakers or making beats ain't their thing but they do have that magical ear that can take a good beat and turn into something great.

that's Dre.

Wouldn't he just pay the artist for the original sample ? (Maybe that's what you meant).

But yea - like you and Buddy already said, Dre's version is better by every objective measure.

...after he heard J-Dilla's remix for Brand New Heavies' "Saturday Night", which is basically a cover of "Got's To Give It Up" anyways but I guess Pharrell thought taking a simplistic stripped down approach wouldn't trigger anybody thinking it's an interpolation of Marvin's song.

His version is 10x better than what Just Blaze did with it production wise. They both are good beats though for sure. Black Moon also released their version first although I don't blame Just Blaze because putting out records takes time and they both used the sample without knowing about the other version I'm sure.

It’s crazy how much this was happening..especially in the late 70s through the 80s.

Both of these songs are among my favorite 1990s grooves. Queen Latifah sampled The Good Girls on Black Reign.

They were both labelmates on Motown ...perhaps that is what accounts for the similarities between both bangers?

And if I have to dig/listen that hard to hear it (I love both songs, have listened to both countless times) then I'm thinking it doesn't really fit the criteria presented in the OP. In other words the similarities should immediately jump out at you. These two songs don't do that IMO. But I guess since it's 1:1 we should let others chime in.

But yes - 1-9-9-9 is the far superior song. It's one of my all-timers in fact.

"Girl, I Got My Eyes On You" is probably my favorite song by them. It's funny because I was just thinking about that song the other day.

But I had never heard the Carrie Lucas song. So I gave it a spin.

I was real skeptical during that intro but once the hook came in, it hit me over the head. That's crazy, man.

These three tracks were basically carbon copies of eachother. Dilated tried to get a taste of that Get By magic (it worked, I guess, from the standpoint of getting them radio play) ... then Talib and Kanye slash the record label tried it again with the same artists, basically.

in a bottle. Like when Jay had a huge hit with Hard Knock Life and then came back and tried to recreate that magic of a broadway sample of a kid singing with "Anything".

This would be a good example of that too.

What an incredible piece of art that album is. Tip really put his all into that joint. Such an amazing, consistent listen.

Haven't listened front to back in a while, just stray tracks. But for a solid 2+ years this album was in full rotation. May have to pop it in tomorrow. Album meant the world to me back when it came out. Couldn't stop listening to it.

Agreed but did Tip bite the LP or is it just a coincidence?

The LP album was shelved, then self-released in 2002. It’s “official” release was in 2009.

Apparently, Geffen was supposed to release this in 1996?!, if Wiki is accurate.

Actually, I take back my comment about the biting because I don’t know. The Large Professor song wasn’t on the earlier version of his shelved album.. The official version has more tracks, including the song that sounds like Tip’s.

I didn't know for sure I just saw the release dates and responded. Had no idea the album had been shelved.

But yea if the title track wasn't on the original shelved album then I'd agree that it was Large Pro "biting" Tip and not the other way around.

It's a great beat tho so I kinda can't blame him for wanting to emulate it haha.

They're similar beats but also a little different. So yea maybe they had an understanding, or whatever. I'd never heard of it before now and I'm a huge Tip fan. And I'd have to assume both are aware of it but maybe just don't care haha.

I got a copy of the '02 release and I'm positive "The LP" was on there, because I've been bumping that track for years. Wouldn't be surprised if there were bootlegs or white labels that had different track listings, but I am sure I heard his version long before Q-Top dropped his album

This was so egregious. They don't sound the same but Debbie Lifted his whole concept, from the sad sax intro to the "I'll never ____ again, the way I ______d with you" chorus to the title of the song coming from a line in the second verse. Careless Whisper becomes Foolish Beat. How quaint.

doesnt sound like the same song to me if that can make sense of a song that sampled another. he did his own thing with it. not like eazy or pac that just covered it basically.

to be honest, i really only listened to redbone when it was on the radio or someone else was playing it. so i might not be familiar enough with it.

by how slavishly it covered other songs.

I mean the Outkast version is a big enough flip that I never even noticed the similarities between the two songs.

"Don't Let Go (Love) " vs. "Damn I Wanna Be Your Lover" from the EV3 album, which was damn good.

I could have sworn I read that Terry was sick or something when "Don't Let Go" was recorded so they let her have it with "Damn I Wanna Be Your Lover."

I'm not 100 percent sure, tho. Somebody fact check me...

Mariah’s “Say Something” and Lisa Shaw’s “Cherry” are eerily similar. Same percussion and synths, a little different melody but one definitely seems inspired by the other. Not sure which one came out first but I can see Pharrell listening to and being inspired by Naked Music/Jay Denes.

In the drum pattern. Wouldn't say it's a "jack," tho. I always think that language is a little strong in instances like this particular one.

Then there's instances like the Lady Gaga/Madonna one that are *actual* "jacks" lol.
