Am I bugging or is Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and Jody Watley's "Looking For A New Love" the same damn song?

Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Thu Nov-08-18 07:15 PM
But there's a reason why producers like Daz and others who claim Dr. Dre just bit their work haven't gone on to have the same level of success without him.

Dre has a great ear and knew how to mine the beats or demos of other producers to create great music. There's something to be said for knowing what sounds great and turning that into a song, even if you didn't actually create the art yourself.
3011317, Agreed. And I think he did both, to be sure.
Posted by Brew, Thu Nov-08-18 08:54 PM
I'm also a HUGE Dre fan. He, Snoop and Cube were my intro to hip-hop when I was in 2nd grade so I'm hella biased as well haha.

But I think Dre did both. He found samples himself/made beats himself, but also allowed other producers to bring him skeleton beats/samples and made them good as well.

What an incredible piece of art that album is. Tip really put his all into that joint. Such an amazing, consistent listen.

Haven't listened front to back in a while, just stray tracks. But for a solid 2+ years this album was in full rotation. May have to pop it in tomorrow. Album meant the world to me back when it came out. Couldn't stop listening to it.

>Agreed but did Tip bite the LP or is it just a coincidence?

The LP was released in 2009, The Renaissance in 2008.
3011746, RE: Looks to be the other way around, no ?
Posted by BlakStaar, Wed Nov-21-18 10:43 AM
The LP album was shelved, then self-released in 2002. It’s “official” release was in 2009.

Apparently, Geffen was supposed to release this in 1996?!, if Wiki is accurate.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_LP
3011747, RE: Looks to be the other way around, no ?
Posted by BlakStaar, Wed Nov-21-18 10:48 AM
Actually, I take back my comment about the biting because I don’t know. The Large Professor song wasn’t on the earlier version of his shelved album.. The official version has more tracks, including the song that sounds like Tip’s.
3011752, Word thanks for looking into it.
Posted by Brew, Wed Nov-21-18 12:05 PM
I didn't know for sure I just saw the release dates and responded. Had no idea the album had been shelved.

But yea if the title track wasn't on the original shelved album then I'd agree that it was Large Pro "biting" Tip and not the other way around.

It's a great beat tho so I kinda can't blame him for wanting to emulate it haha.
3011753, they're friends, no? Just wondering...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Nov-21-18 12:16 PM
maybe they were kicking around some beats and thought the other wasn't gonna use it, lol. It definitely sounds like a LP beat, IMO.
3011754, Oh I'm sure they are.
Posted by Brew, Wed Nov-21-18 12:25 PM
They're similar beats but also a little different. So yea maybe they had an understanding, or whatever. I'd never heard of it before now and I'm a huge Tip fan. And I'd have to assume both are aware of it but maybe just don't care haha.
3012965, If I remember correctly, Large Pro did it first
Posted by spenzalii, Wed Jan-02-19 03:39 PM
I got a copy of the '02 release and I'm positive "The LP" was on there, because I've been bumping that track for years. Wouldn't be surprised if there were bootlegs or white labels that had different track listings, but I am sure I heard his version long before Q-Top dropped his album
3012966, you're correct. 'The LP' (song) was on that '02 Hip-Hop Site release

This was so egregious. They don't sound the same but Debbie Lifted his whole concept, from the sad sax intro to the "I'll never ____ again, the way I ______d with you" chorus to the title of the song coming from a line in the second verse. Careless Whisper becomes Foolish Beat. How quaint.
