""call me maybe" and "somebody i used to know" OR how corporations..."
Mon Aug-06-12 06:38 PM by david bammer

scaled back "mainstream" consumption of music to 2 fucking songs.

so much for the internet "leveling the playing field", huh?
your fav. 2012 song toils away on youtube with god knows (...or cares) how many views while these 2 songs play away endlessly back to back, every hour, every day on every station at every venue out of every speaker in every city in every goddamn state...

this was the year the corporations that dabble in music made it REAL easy for you (and themselves):

you can get wit this... or you can get wit that.

it's unbelievable - nobody is at least "bored" with these recessing options and conditions that corporations give us for era-defining "culture".
10 years ago, as bad as it was, might as well have been 150 years ago because nobody remembers shit about the conditions, let alone the material and how plentiful and assorted it was compared to today.

-throws papers off desk and walks out of room-

in part that we can now lead healthy, full, social lives w/o being at the mercy of The Man for our music listening choices. when we wanna sit around w/our ppl and listen to music we can pull up Spotify or Pandora or even Sirius. it gives us a bit more control over what we hear and when.

so it's possible for a person to be out and about listening to music in the company of others w/o being subjected to hearing 'Call Me Maybe' every 10 minutes.

the level playing field may not mean that my favorite obscure Sia album track will be played in rotation w/'Call Me Maybe' on my local top 40 radio station or in TV commercials.

fuck you.

On the real, I spotify most of my music on my phone nowadays. I comb for playlists and have stumbled on to some dope shit. I don't listen to the radio for music and I still feel like I don't miss out on what is considered popular. Except for maybe hip hop. Hip hop is on life support as far as I'm concerned.

Doesn't say it there but this it was choreographed to be a cha cha. imo THAT is far worse than it being shoved down the mass consumer mouths because that's what the corp's do they shove whatever they want you to bye bye bye down the mouths of the mass consumers.

But what this is doing is just utterly disrespecting the fucking history of music. And I've watched this shit for ten seasons. There's always been line stepping (no pun), but now its just unabashedly so. And it's not jus the ballroom categories, cause ballroom has been notorious for this for a grip. But everything everything is being transformed into whatever simple shit that emmy seeking choreogrephers can pull a heart string from. Trust me when I say you don't even want to know what hip-hop has become.

But I digress... there now your post is even more Whole Foods soccer mommy.

I like both of em. The first time I heard 'Used to know' I knew that chicks were gonna eat that shit up. Didn't think it'd get THAT big. But it certainly doesn't confound me that either of those songs are hits. They're both good pop songs. Neither of them were 'pre-determined' to succeed via corporate manipulation. They caught on initially cause they were good....THEN corporations got behind them and re-inforced their popularity.

the same technology pundits who would tout the internet as means of "leveling the playing field for indie musicians" would be the same people who would argue the internet has made everything quicker and smaller with social media...
i.e. you can upload a video from your smartphone literally seconds after it happened. opine your witty remarks to the adulation of no one, seconds after coming up with them, share everything with everyone immediately.

like what are you even talking about?
if anything the "information superhighway" is argued as a means of bringing people together and making things more like the "global village" marshall mcluhan theorized.

19. "we don't have collective experiences anymore."
In response to Reply # 18
Mon Aug-06-12 09:51 PM by Joe Corn Mo

there was a time when everybody watched "the cosby show"
on thursday nights at 8:00.

there was a time when everybody watched "t.g.i.f"
friday night lineup.

hell, there was a time when all of the children
watched the same block of cartoons every saturday morning.

the world isn't like that anymore.
in the 80s, everybody on the planet knew who michael jackson was,
even if you didn't particularly care for his music,
you knew who he was.

nowadays, an artist can go platinum 10 times
and there is a pretty good chance that the old lady working next to you in the cubicle has never heard of her.

and in a lot of ways, the internet has torn people apart.
everybody can get their news in their own favorite websites.
and all of their friends that agree with them go to the same websites.

meanwhile, other people in the world are living in their own bubble.
they are getting their news from an entirely different source
and the two worlds will never, ever connect.

nowadays, music just isn't as important as it was.
there is no such thing as a "blockbuster album" that everybody
has heard because albums are competing with the internet
and x-box and 1,000 chanells on direct tv.

and the album is also competing with the fact that everybody
can download the music that THEY want to hear on the internet
and not have to pay attention to whatever is being marketed as popular.

so if a person wants to download nothing but acoustic folks music,
they can. they can get their fix without having to
pay attention to any music that other folks are listening to.

so yeah, the world is bigger now.
no collective experiences.

the closest thing we've had to a universal cultural phenomenon
was obama in '08. and the 9/11 terror attacks.

beyond that, we're all in our own little bubble.
we don't listen to the same things anymore.

like i said, the world is bigger.

the world most certainly does still have those things.

you just no longer participate.

truthfully, i haven't for years by choice...
but i will concede that some things are quite literally "unavoidable" less staying in a single room programming your own playlist.

but now we're getting away from the point of this post.

take the two songs you mentioned,
and ask a few random people if they've heard of them.

make sure you do it across a few demographics.

ask the old folks in your church if they've heard it.
ask your parents if they've heard it.
ask a few hipsters if they've heard it.

ask woman behind the counter at target if she's heard it.

just ask a few people.

i promise, those songs aren't as universal as you think.
this isn't the world you grew up in.

i know people have heard the songs.

just because some reclusive music buffs online tell me "you're living in the past" does not mean i'm going to lend any credence to it and embarrass myself for a pointless experiment.

you people have deluded yourself into thinking you, your fav. acts and worst of all the internet itself is more powerful than it actually is.

all it does is provide an escape route for shut-ins.
which is exactly what it did - 10 years ago and 20 years ago.
just the numbers have grown...

http://www.npr.org/2011/01/24/133182903/cultural-common-ground-getting-harder-to-come-by

excerpt that proves my point...

"When The Cosby Show was at its peak in the late 1980s, the show's audience was 30 million. Today, Two and a Half Men is the nation's top-rated show, with 15 million viewers.

When Mark Lopez of the Pew Hispanic Research Center hears the term "fractured culture," he thinks about young Latinos. " straddling two different cultures," Lopez says. "They're straddling the culture of their immigrant roots, but an American culture as well."

American culture is sliced up in so many different ways that what's popular with one group can go virtually unnoticed by another. Univision, for example, is watched by millions of Latinos in the U.S., but millions of other Americans couldn't tell you what channel it's on."

this is a real thing.

like i know what you're arguing.
i'm well-versed with the stance.
it's just not true from my perspective.
people are still consuming the diminishing crap that is available to consume in a "shared" way like before the internet.

the reality is just that more people are becoming shut-ins and willingly dropping out.
and probably not for their own better health either...

there is a huge demographic of latinos in this country,
and they don't deal with the same media.

what about the hipsters that don't listen to rap at all?
are they "willingly dropping out?"
do you think they are all shut ins?

or do they simply have the ability
to consume media in a way that was literally impossible 25 years ago.

what about the people that can chose to listen to nothing
but talk radio all day? these are people that have
active social lives. these are people that aren't "shut-ins,"
necessarily.

they just have a lot of media choices that didn't exist before.
and since we all have more options now,
we all choose to deal with different things.

it's not that deep.

i can't tell any of them apart from each other.
like i said below, it sounds like "that song that is playing

i realize that the exact same song isn't playing
whenever i walk into the gym.

but when i walk into the gym, that's what i hear.
it's been the same song for years now. lol

europop song in the conveience store?
that's the song i hear.

europop song when i am riding in somebody elses car?
that's the song i hear.

europop song playing when i walk pass a store in the mall?
yeah... same song.

i've been hearing the same europop song everywhere i go
for about 3 or 4 years now.

I don't listen to those stations and therefore didn't recognize the names of these songs at all. I thought you were talking about the two Kanye singles that NYC radio has played nonstop for the last 4 months.

I have heard it - I just didn't know what it was called.

And I only know of Gotye because he was on SNL and his name sounds like Gautier, which is the last name of a couple of Haitian kids I went to school with.

But I certainly haven't heard enough of either one of them to even know the names of the songs right off the bat, much less get sick of them.

places you will eventually not be able to avoid either songs:

-literally any retail store
-a taxi (depending on who's driving)
-a restaurant that plays music through the pa system
-convenience stores/gas stations
-sporting events
-network television
-youtube's main page

avoid all of those and you're good.

sure, i hear music when i go to these places.
and for all i know, maybe i've heard this very song.
but it ran together into being "one of those europop songs"
that sounds like all the other songs from katy perry
or whoever else is doing that now.

it sounds like that song i hear when i go to the gym
before i put on my headphones.

intellectually, i realize it's not always the same song
that is playing whenever i go to them gym.
but let's face it... it might as well be the same song
because it sounds the same to me and i don't focus on it.

any time i go to a place that i will actually be focused on the
music that is playing, they aren't playing stuff like this.

I'm "forced" to listen to national radio at work (which is better than the commercial stations but still) and the "adult" channel P4 (=the one my coworkers in my room play) has played that song several times a day for months now. So for *me*, that song has been inescapable and it's one of the few recent pop-songs that really gotten that amount of play, at least here and if you combine this with the songs they play on the copmmercial stations and the more "teenage/young adult" channel P3, there has definitely been a certain narrowing down in regards of the amount of artists/songs/styles they play.

Anyway, I can see your point somewhat but it's only relevant for people without a special interest in music because for them/us, it's easier than ever to ignore the mainstream; technically, I could sit with headphones on all day (which I do a lot but not enough to not get sick of those songs) and in my own world...

I also really don't see the problem:for those who prefer music in the background, in the club (and not the "cool" clubs) or something they hear between people talking about how to grow the perfect salad on the radio, I doubt it's much of a problem and us others don't have to bother.

thank you for taking the time to reply.

what i'm essentially arguing is that from my perspective "the lack of options" people have bemoaned for years (decades...) has really come to a head this year.

in 2012, the corporations said:
2 songs. all the time.
take it or leave it.

i'm not surprised people are tuning out to the degree where they don't even know what is popular on a mainstream level any more.

it's just shocking there isn't more outrage from people observing the present conditions, even from an outsider POV like myself.
it's shocking that people will tolerate these recessing conditions without articulating any sort of discontentment even just in comparison to a time as recent as say 2002...
which was not a "golden era" by my standards by any means... but it makes the early 10's seem like a cultural barren wasteland in contrast by virtue of the sheer AMOUNT of things that were vying for your dollar and ready for mainstream consumption and success.
in the past on here, i've theorized that corporations have decreased output as a means to gobble up any remaining market share increasingly over the past 10 years in the music industry...
but this is just ridiculous.
i hear both of these songs practically every time i've gone into say, subway, this summer.
it never was THIS bad.

"oochie wally." i can't even act like this station is an outlier. rap's out.

It's very rare for people to not hear these 2 songs. I had to look up Call Me Baby when people were talking about it but when I heard it I knew I heard it before but didn't give a fuck about it.

I fuck with the GOYTE song though...

I wouldn't get too upset at a few dudes on OKP who claim they never heard the song.

everyone's favorite song. It's about the long tail. It means that if you ask 100 people what there favorite songs are you would get 100 different answers.

those two songs might be the most ubiquitous songs this year but if you asked people what there favorite songs are a bet less than 10 percent of people would name either of those songs.

Again, it's about the long tail.

personally, in response to what you suggested, i would counter-argue that that is actually a BAD thing.
both culturally and for relationships.
trust me, the novelty of everyone hovering over the laptop as the only means to hear songs they actually enjoy is going to wear off for the MAJORITY of people who formerly were having their tastes decided by more invasive methods of corporation pervasive (tv/radio) only a few short years prior.
i mean at the end of the day, unless you are doing your own digging on soundcloud - you'll still be subject to a similar corporate influence.
just in a less widespread and distinguishable manner.

but i'm getting away from my point...

like i said, being discontent with the mainstream and having your little cache of "tunes" that exist outside of any sort of recognition beyond a few people scattered all around the world on the internet will become recognized for the burdened, lonely, iconoclastic existence that it actually is instead of "cool, hip and new!".
but don't take my word for it...
try it yourself for 10 years of your life and get back to me in 2022.

i put your post through google translate, this is what it gave me:

OMG Becky if I hear this song one more time I'm either going to buy more panties to put in a bunch or have to pull the ones I'm already wearing out the crack of my ass. I mean can't a girl go from Starbucks to The Gap without hearing the same two songs? I wish I could just cut it all off but the fucking 9% are oppressing me with this stuff. You don't think the manicure spot is going to be playing it too, because I really need my nails done but if I have to sit through that song again I might just make it the theme of my sweet sixteen party. OMG that's such a great idea. What if everybody came to my sweet sixteen party and had to do kareoke of just those two songs. Of course they'd be awful covers but it'd be so hip and ironic at the same time. NO I am not a hipster, they aren't the only ones that can be ironic. I mean look at me, I used to like hip-hop!! I got over that though and now I'm cool enough to state my opinion about like, well like anything. Becky? Becky? Are you listening to me? Why aren't you listening to me Becky? OMG you're so dumb Becky. Can't you see how much cooler I am than you? Whatever Becky, I'm going to go get my manicure done all by myself. Don't worry I'll still invite you to my sweet sixteen just so you can embarass yourself by pretending you don't even know the songs. You're so stupid Becky!!

(note I'm pretty sure Becky as the google translation of "The Lesson")

actually the point was that corporations that control our mainstream culture have receded back so far in their output for consumption via mainstream media outlets like television, terrestrial/satellite radio playlists, etc. that they actually "did" a summer where they only rotated 2 songs.
i cannot be the only person that notices how little music is released and popularized now...
and i mean this has come to a head this summer where they gave top 40 listeners and people exposed to top 40 only TWO options.
now i get that this leaves open the trite counter-observation where someone says "there's always only 1 or 2 songs every summer that becom..."
...yes. i know.
but THIS summer it is seemingly just 2 songs. period.
and the statistics of released music i'm sure if i had the patience to procure would back up how much MORE released/rotated music there was in say, 2002, compared to 2012 from april-august.
all of this was all essentially outlined in less grueling, benefit of the doubt detail in the OG post.
i'm not surprised it was lost on you or anyone else here.
again, thank you for your replies.
your 2 cents incessantly focusing on something other than weighing the crux of the post are always invaluable and/or valueless.

or why you think anyone here'd care either. From the replies you should realize that everyone here is indifferent to it, because their musical summer is not dependent on those songs. Whole thing comes off as a "I know the hottest pop songs'-vertisement, Which again is really odd for you.

But to entertain you, I take it you think this is a bad thing. Why not embrace it as a good thing. Maybe next year there'll be only one. And the year after that we can call it a complete wrap.

Sometimes it feels like it's more than it was like 10 years ago but that might just be because I care less about it now so it seems like just too much music that I have to work to ignore. But with all the Rita Oras, Jennie Bapsts, Emeli Sandes, Starshells etc. it's insane to say that the industry has only released and pushed these two songs.

There is a shitload of stuff being dumped out there these days. Hell, just try watching a VH1 show sometime; every commercial break they're bombarding you with the specs of the music played in the last segment (and the Gotye and Jepsen records got their initial push in the same way... I guess they just developed legs where a lot of the others haven't because, let's face it, they are that much better than a lot of stuff that gets released these days)

telling me about some bullshit mp3 by some unknown band that was only licensed for reality tv programming because it cost the corporation little to nothing to license because the act wanted to make their first paycheck is not going to fool me.
even if you think if you write it persuasively enough it will.

I'm seriously trying to conceptualize a parallel universe in which I could possibly care enough about Carly Rae Jepson as to spend even an iota of energy working to "excuse or rationalize" anything having to do with her.

You're the one over here damn near stroking out over some dumb pop songs... I dunno what to tell you, man; life can be more than this.

yes, payola did have a certain advantage.
there always used to be such a thing as heavy rotation.

but the songs in rotation used to switch up
every few months.

now, there is a situation where they will push the same
couple of songs indefinitely.

i noticed this around 2005.
it probably has gotten worse now.

but like i said, it's easy to miss this phenomenon because
music that's being pushed on the top 40 is easier to miss nowadays
because there are more options.

these joints. LOL. The only reason I know about "Call Me Maybe" is because they talked about it during the Olympics due to the ladies swim team doing a video with it. The other joint I never even heard of until just now.
