"Texas Blackout"

we live in the dumbest country fam.

the entire texas power grid collapses due to a winter storm that most east coast and midwest colleges dont even cancel school for.

and texas republicans are blaming it on the democrats and green energy. despite the fact that over 80% of tx energy comes from fossil fuels (duh its texas) and republicans have controlled every major statewide political office for the last 3 decades.

and itll work.

because the majority of white people have no book smarts *or* street smarts (they never needed it in a system built for them).

It’s the reason they’re on such a publicity blitz right now
I got an email from Chip Roy.
He’s never not once responded or reached out about anything and they’re trying to get ahead of the message.

From COVID to the vaccine rollout to now this. There’s only so much you can blame on national issues.
Particularly when as locals aren’t getting any information you’re on the national airwaves bullshitting

Highways are closed. Gas pumps are down.
Fire stations are down. Distribution networks are in disarray. Cell towers either can’t keep up or keep going down. ATT went down for us for about six hours. It’s not just a grid collapse. It’s been a complete collapse. And that’s just the bad. Not the devastating.

..but that only works on problems that don't have tangible, immediate, or obvious impact on most people's lives. In a situation where millions have been without power and water for 3+ days in freezing temps nobody's interested in some excuse about the Green New Deal. There's a reason Abbot has moved on to blaming ercot.

In fact I think the way commenters glibly map their explanations across national partisan lines, and choose sides accordingly, falls flat on a local level. Dems should be aware of how opportunistic and insincere it comes off to a lot of people who are actually in the crisis.

i will never understand how so many americans think that we should pay the salary, healthcare, etc to fund the standard of living for politicians with our taxes but we shouldnt expect them to use our money to do anything to improve *our* standard of living in return.

On Texas and use this as a way to get their message through.

Dems need to get that message tight like the GOP does.

GOP out there blaming AOC for power outages like she's the wicked witch of the west or some shit.

I don't think the Dem message should be "CA doesn't look so bad now, does it?"....cuz turning TX to CA isn't the goal.

Hopefully dem strategists have more in mind than dunking on them when this blows over....flip that shit blue.

And hopefully local Dems are pushing back on blaming the green new deal and shit.

GOP is killing the people they govern, as usual.

5.2 million Texans voted democratic last November -- need to keep pushing for new leadership at every level. stronger candidates and stronger action when those victories come, because this Lucifer's dinner table of Abbott, Patric, Paxton, Cruz and Cornyn is the literal worst.

also, those taking glee in "red state suffering" are not helping.

We’re good. We have power no water. My parents have water no power. My sister has no power no food. But water. Gas is running low. Internet ISPs are spotty at best. Work is still requesting a full workload. The roads just got uncrapped this afternoon but it’s going to freeze again tonight. Schools are closed. Daycares are closed. Highways are blocked off. Bridges are blocked off. It’s a complete failure. Cell service is bad. Only cell I have is WiFi.

It’s a complete collapse. Grocery warehouses haven’t shipped in days. There’s no road treatment. The only messaging from government is blame. Lines around every fast food place. One fast station I saw had one working pump and a ten car line.

I don’t know what it looks like outside of here. But it’s a total collapse.

Lots of Houston is similar to post-hurricane steez. Grocery stores packed and missing a lot of stuff. Gas stations are getting hit up hard.

As streets were much more drivable today, I’d expect the inventories will be mostly fine in a couple days.

The power and water shit is a total joke. 5 million folks at least in and out of power in the H. I’ve been lucky but hella friends and fam have not. Some folks have been out since Sunday night. Water has been a big thing too. Again, I have been very lucky.

Bucks are passing and not stopping all over. A bunch of wolfing and current day political shenanigans where no fucking body wants to say ‘this shit is on me and my folks and we have a good ass plan to make this be the last time this happens like this’. Most of these mfers need to jump in the ground with Rush if they aren’t going to ever make themselves useful for real. Or at least just drop the pretense of doing a job and just become a shock jock/troll.

my family in houston finally got power late last night. i was checking the outage map and they were reporting 42% of people had power all of tuesday and most of yesterday. in the afternoon it jumped to 52%, a few hours later 75%, then 85% and thats when they sent the text that they had power again.

hopefully they can get everything working for everyone today.

do they have anyone checking on people to make sure they have food and drinking water at least?

Ala Al Gore during Katrina. But I think the egg on his face here is that he should be helping with the solution to the problem.

Beto is indeed coming out of this looking ready to be governor.

I don’t think you grasp that people are struggling to survive right now

Hospitals have been severely impacted. Covid is still a thing. And now we’re about to deal with a food and fuel shortage when the weather finally clears up.

I've seen this a lot with Covid. So much of the discussion is about rights and who is to blame for this and that, who is helping vs. who is not, etc. - we legit lose sight on the actual human impact.

Sheeit, people in Texas are hurting and in peril right now. I wish we as a country could see that first and find a way to help.

The news hasn’t trickled out from what or how. But there’s not even shit anyone can do. COVID made keeping community a struggle, this storm is making even helping each other a challenge. My family has been in and out of helping ourselves and each other while the “sun is up” and then hunkering down at night because the roads are still untreated and freeze at night.

And we got it “good”.

Seeing all these homes and apartments with extensive water damage. Even after it warms up and power is restored a lot of people are going to be stuck with no place to live all of a sudden.

Im assuming there are a lot more places in the south where "it doesnt get cold" that this same thing could happen easily.

Yeah. I was in a HEB Wednesday. The lights went out and the generators kicked in fast. I went to another one this morning and they were mostly stocked. They are not messing around. At all.

anything traded on the stock market would never sacrifice a dollar to make their employees or customers happier without a ROI.

wish there were HEB grocery stores in Dallas. I love Central Market but that's not a place you get your weekly food, unless you are in a much higher tax bracket.
