"So did anybody else go see The Photograph?"

A lil sappy but I liked it.

Seeing Issa Rae was like seeing a good friend I hadn’t seen in while.

LaKeith Stansfield was his usual excellent self.

Didn't think it was too sappy at all which was refreshing. Dug it. Good performances nothing amazing.
Soundtrack was the MVP.

Not plot wise obviously but in that both are pretty pictures without substance to match.

Photograph felt slow and not in a way that made sense.

My one positive takeaway is that Issa is gorgeous on the big screen, not sure how I didn’t see it for Insecure.

I'm thinking it was the role she plays here.
She's obviously very pretty, but I'm probably just not very fond of her as a person. She was uncharacteristically attractive to me in this tho.

Without falling into rom-com territory. The chemistry between the 2 main couples felt sincere. I'm a big fan of Lakeith Stanfield and love the range he's been showing in the roles he's had over the past couple of years

my major gripe was they fell in love instantly with no buildup

also the lack of diversity in Black Hollywood stood out

(spoiler alert) Issa's love interest in one thing shouldnt be her father in another thing she's in

because it seems we just don't see it much anymore on the big screen. The days of "Best Man", "Love & Basketball", "Love Jones", "Brown Sugar" etc have all but gone.

However, I was hoping there would be some deeper tie-in to the photo... some deeper connection of their stories. It was a very surface level movie imo. Unfortunately, I can only recommend it to people who are hungry for a Black love story. I can't really recommend the movie on it's merit to just anybody as a flat out good movie, because frankly, it's not. I do wish that the refreshment of seeing Black love and happiness wasn't all it had to offer, but it was enjoyable to me. I think I bought it twice. Once for me and once for someone else just to support.

and how that sort of affected everything.

Some things don't really need to be complex.

Some things are just simple - not surface-y.

A couple of criticisms;
Never for a minute didn’t think Isaac was her Dad. Literally just waiting for the reveal...which was very late in the movie and fell flat, IMO
We get some backstory on why Mom didn’t reveal her terminal diagnosis. The mother’s distance and unavailability are rationalized as learned behavior from her mother. The climax of the story is Isaa breaking the cycle, left me wondering why her mother didn’t intentionally break the cycle from her mother.
A couple of scenes that Isaa was weak as an actor;
The sex scene. She was great as a leading lady. She looked bad af. Long way from awkward black girl. The connection with Darius was convincing...until coitus. The look on her face after sex was not ecstasy...it was more like...meh, you aiight...
Toward the end of the movie, maybe the final time reading her mom’s letter, I’m in tears...they cut to Isaa on a bed crying...and it just wasn’t convincing.

Great job by Lakeith. He’ll forever be Darius to me, but he did a great job separating Mike’s character from the Darius role.

+1, Lil’ Rel as the brother in NYC...c’mon son...I know he’s getting a lot of placement, but that role could have been better than Lil Rel doing Lil Rel

Really enjoyed the movie. Happy for Darius and Isaa getting leading roles in a big budget studio modern black love story. Really had a lot of correlations to my real life. Good movie.

+2, soundtrack was phenomenal

especially in non-comedic or oppressed roles.

It’s hard to even watch something without at least 1 black person in a major role.

I loved this movie and I thought all the actors did a great job.

Like some have said it did give somewhat of a modern Loves Jones vibe I think that movie was a classic for that era.

Reading through this exchange, I’m confused on her occupation because I also thought that was her place

I thought she was just some boss bitch runnin’ thangs

Wait...so their first smash was in dead mom’s apartment? Kinda...eww

Did we ever see where Darius lived?

I was also confused that they went to Rel’s in the hurricane

Did he live with his brother?

that whole scene confused me.

Its raining like crazy but instead of lighting candles you run out into a storm, almost get hit by a can and then get inside?

The NYC apartment in movies and shows is always on some “aint no damn way they can afford that” steez.

But like I typed above, the apt looked like it had a grassy hill leading up to the living room windows, never saw anything like that in NY..... Or did I not see that?

I was confused at the first spot they was at where he picked her up and the Al Green record, I'm guessing that was a lounge part of her office or something but it looked like someone's apartment

And yeah agree with legs, why they left to go to his brother lmao. Why not go to darius' crib?

Anyway movie was aight. Issa was fine and Lakeith is always dope to watch. Although Atlanta > everything (obviously). I lowkey dug Sorry To Bother you tho

there was a really good story in the movie but it was overshadowed by the push on the modern love story.

the dual storyline was interesting but I wanted to know more about the mother's life. once she got to NYC they kind of played a "draw the rest of the fucking owl" with the mother going from Move to NYC to world renowned arteest
