13367400, So did anybody else go see The Photograph?
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Feb-17-20 12:14 AM
A lil sappy but I liked it.

Seeing Issa Rae was like seeing a good friend I hadn’t seen in while.

LaKeith Stansfield was his usual excellent self.

Didn't think it was too sappy at all which was refreshing. Dug it. Good performances nothing amazing.
Soundtrack was the MVP.
13367457, The soundtrack is amazing, listening to it now.

13367408, Solid movie!!!! It did seem to....

let some moments drag a little too long to me, but over all a great film!
13367439, Saw it, it reminded me of Queen and Slim.

Not plot wise obviously but in that both are pretty pictures without substance to match.

Photograph felt slow and not in a way that made sense.

My one positive takeaway is that Issa is gorgeous on the big screen, not sure how I didn’t see it for Insecure.
13367679, CoSign on Issa..... she was...
Posted by KnowOne, Tue Feb-18-20 04:18 PM
always really cute to me in Akward Black Girl & Insecure. But this was the first time she looked flat our sexy to me.
13416224, I feel the same

>this was the first time she looked flat out sexy to me.

I'm thinking it was the role she plays here.
She's obviously very pretty, but I'm probably just not very fond of her as a person. She was uncharacteristically attractive to me in this tho.

13418129, yup

100%. Never really got that from insecure or ABG
13367453, went on Friday. I liked it. Nice romantic movie

Without falling into rom-com territory. The chemistry between the 2 main couples felt sincere. I'm a big fan of Lakeith Stanfield and love the range he's been showing in the roles he's had over the past couple of years

13374083, solid film

my major gripe was they fell in love instantly with no buildup

also the lack of diversity in Black Hollywood stood out

(spoiler alert) Issa's love interest in one thing shouldnt be her father in another thing she's in
13374107, Saw it on my first date in a LOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNG time
Posted by c71, Wed Mar-18-20 06:35 PM
pretty good
13415992, Just watched it again on HBO, kind of a modern Love Jones feel
Posted by ThaTruth, Wed Dec-09-20 11:04 PM
13416005, Soundtrack was impressive. Movie was good...a lil rushed, but good.

13416227, Refreshing as a modern Black love story...
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri Dec-11-20 12:46 PM
because it seems we just don't see it much anymore on the big screen. The days of "Best Man", "Love & Basketball", "Love Jones", "Brown Sugar" etc have all but gone.

However, I was hoping there would be some deeper tie-in to the photo... some deeper connection of their stories. It was a very surface level movie imo. Unfortunately, I can only recommend it to people who are hungry for a Black love story. I can't really recommend the movie on it's merit to just anybody as a flat out good movie, because frankly, it's not. I do wish that the refreshment of seeing Black love and happiness wasn't all it had to offer, but it was enjoyable to me. I think I bought it twice. Once for me and once for someone else just to support.
13416476, nah....the photo tie in was about the type of woman the mother was
Posted by c71, Sat Dec-12-20 01:01 PM
and how that sort of affected everything.

Some things don't really need to be complex.

Some things are just simple - not surface-y.
13416478, I'm glad it satisfied you, brother.

HBO Max, clutch.
13418073, Good, not great. Definitely worth the watch (spoilers)

A couple of criticisms;
Never for a minute didn’t think Isaac was her Dad. Literally just waiting for the reveal...which was very late in the movie and fell flat, IMO
We get some backstory on why Mom didn’t reveal her terminal diagnosis. The mother’s distance and unavailability are rationalized as learned behavior from her mother. The climax of the story is Isaa breaking the cycle, left me wondering why her mother didn’t intentionally break the cycle from her mother.
A couple of scenes that Isaa was weak as an actor;
The sex scene. She was great as a leading lady. She looked bad af. Long way from awkward black girl. The connection with Darius was convincing...until coitus. The look on her face after sex was not ecstasy...it was more like...meh, you aiight...
Toward the end of the movie, maybe the final time reading her mom’s letter, I’m in tears...they cut to Isaa on a bed crying...and it just wasn’t convincing.

Great job by Lakeith. He’ll forever be Darius to me, but he did a great job separating Mike’s character from the Darius role.

+1, Lil’ Rel as the brother in NYC...c’mon son...I know he’s getting a lot of placement, but that role could have been better than Lil Rel doing Lil Rel

Really enjoyed the movie. Happy for Darius and Isaa getting leading roles in a big budget studio modern black love story. Really had a lot of correlations to my real life. Good movie.

+2, soundtrack was phenomenal
13418103, During the pandemic I’ve grown addicted to seeing black faces on tv...
Posted by ThaTruth, Tue Dec-29-20 03:05 PM
especially in non-comedic or oppressed roles.

It’s hard to even watch something without at least 1 black person in a major role.

I loved this movie and I thought all the actors did a great job.

Like some have said it did give somewhat of a modern Loves Jones vibe I think that movie was a classic for that era.
13418117, Lakeith is great

.
13418123, How is THAT her apartment in NYC tho???
Posted by Bambino Grande, Tue Dec-29-20 06:41 PM

Where that at?

13418134, her mom was a successful photographer, it was her place....
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Dec-30-20 06:56 AM
there was a flashback showing her mom living in it...at least I thought I saw a scene like that.
I remember wondering the same thing lol..
13418135, You right, explanation came a couple scenes later

13418137, and now rereading your post, I see you were asking specifically about loca
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Dec-30-20 08:09 AM
location of an apartment of that stature, not necessarily HOW she came upon it...my bad...
13418140, Haha nah I guess I was wondering both
Posted by Bambino Grande, Wed Dec-30-20 08:54 AM
>location of an apartment of that stature, not necessarily HOW
>she came upon it...my bad...

But the location looked like it had a grassy hill leading up to the living room windows, never saw anything like that in NY..... o_O
13418153, Yeah, you’d have to be multi to afford that in NYC
Posted by bentagain, Wed Dec-30-20 11:42 AM
...assuming that’s Manhattan, more like independently wealthy...

Reading through this exchange, I’m confused on her occupation because I also thought that was her place

I thought she was just some boss bitch runnin’ thangs

Wait...so their first smash was in dead mom’s apartment? Kinda...eww

Did we ever see where Darius lived?

I was also confused that they went to Rel’s in the hurricane

Did he live with his brother?
13418155, was it a fire alarm that woke them up?
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Dec-30-20 11:50 AM
that whole scene confused me.

Its raining like crazy but instead of lighting candles you run out into a storm, almost get hit by a can and then get inside?

The NYC apartment in movies and shows is always on some “aint no damn way they can afford that” steez.

13418188, Lmao at first smash location

But like I typed above, the apt looked like it had a grassy hill leading up to the living room windows, never saw anything like that in NY..... Or did I not see that?

I was confused at the first spot they was at where he picked her up and the Al Green record, I'm guessing that was a lounge part of her office or something but it looked like someone's apartment

And yeah agree with legs, why they left to go to his brother lmao. Why not go to darius' crib?

Anyway movie was aight. Issa was fine and Lakeith is always dope to watch. Although Atlanta > everything (obviously). I lowkey dug Sorry To Bother you tho
13418138, it was just aiight
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Dec-30-20 08:28 AM
def felt like they watched Love Jones between scenes.

music was banging

Issa and Darius tho.. I needed more passion and emotion. All their convos felt robotic to
me.
13418203, *sigh* yet another film pulled down by editing
Posted by double negative, Wed Dec-30-20 03:46 PM
there was a really good story in the movie but it was overshadowed by the push on the modern love story.

the dual storyline was interesting but I wanted to know more about the mother's life. once she got to NYC they kind of played a "draw the rest of the fucking owl" with the mother going from Move to NYC to world renowned arteest
