"So we not talking about the whole Fallon/Trump thing? "

Or is the mods deleting shyt?

Yea uhh

I'm not going to shyt on Questlove

Cause I get it

It's his job

Most of us have had to put up with bullshyt on the job to keep that check coming in

But I will shyt on Fallon for putting The Roots in that position

Ish was bad optics all together

Black band having to smile and play their music for Trump

It almost was like Fallon was stunting to white America on some look at how trained I got my Blacks

I'll be honest i ain't watch the whole interview

I ain't want to see my nyggas like that

But I ain't trippin

Everybody got a price

like okay when you were doing the Late Show you had to put take whatever guests NBC wanted you to book. But now you are running The Tonight Show. Stop booking these vile ass politicians and letting them show their "human" side on your show. Fucking hee heeing with Ted Christie, Jeb Bush, and Donald Trump. Shit he marched that whole Republican ticket on stage . Even fucking Hillary. FUCK ALL OF THEM. He does this shit all the time. Once Trump started spewing his hate speech he could have done like Letterman and said fuck him he aint coming on my show. But nope he probably thinks its fine because they dont talk politics.

Trump can say whatever he wants...And he deserves whatever platform he is given as the GOP nominee...

That doesn't mean he should be treated like a regular "politician 101" candidate. Because he's not.....

Fallon should stick with the light shit and let Kimmel or Colbert handle such an interview if he's just going to kiss Trump's ass....

Trump asked the first black President to show him his papers....He's not in the same realm as other politicians....

And that's the problem we have at the moment. Trump is being made to look 'NORMAL"....PAR-FOR-THE-COURSE....

He's none of those things....He's dangerous as hell....

As I stated, I have no issue with him going on the Tonight Show. As the GOP candidate he should get that platform if his opponent is also getting the same look...

My beef is with any media host conducting ANY interview with Trump as if he's normal.....

Letterman wouldn't have done that...Kimmel wouldn't have done that....Add Ellen, Colbert, and Conan to that list...

Jimmy Fallon is going to Jimmy Fallon, though....

Nah...I'm frightened that Fallon conducted an interview without at least pointing out the absurdity of dude running for President....Or the crazy, racist shit he continues to trot out...

Ellen comes from the same EVERYBODY-LOVE-EVERYBODY bag as Fallon...That same sweet goofiness....She wouldn't have skipped over any of that shit just to rub his hair...

There's a way to get at a Trump without being an asshole...

But I guess I'm asking too much from Fallon....

that whole Michelle Bachmann scenario with The Roots trying to be subversive with her puts a whole other dynamic into play. I sure they had to walk that tight rope in terms of just playing their role to earn their paychecks.

and Fallon is a TV host. Not sure what his opinion is on politics but his job is to host guest and ask questions.

I could see if he was on some left wing hardcore show steez but I really don't understand the anger over this.

They all work for NBC.

This^^^^is all true....

My beef is not with having a Presidential candidate on the Tonight Show.....It's allowing an open racist, misogynistic, con man to come on such a platform and be treated like he's a normal politician...

I would have loved to have seen Jimmy Kimmel instead of Fallon do that interview with Trump....He would have exposed his blatant bullshit with sly, side-eye humor...

Shit, Letterman would have lit that ass up....

the equal time rule refers to advertising. If Hillary pays NBC for ads, and they accept the money and run the ads, they can't refuse to run Trump ads, and they have to offer equal time to Trump and other candidates at the same price that they charged hillary. They either have to run all political ads or none of them.

Talk shows are exempt from the equal time rule, as are documentaries, news interviews, and breaking news.

There used to be a thing called "the fairness doctrine" regarding equal time on TV, but that wasn't just limited to politics. It said that if you had someone on your show with a viewpoint on a topic, you had to have someone with the opposite view on at the same time. That's why 80s talk shows were so lit, because if Geraldo had a skinhead on the show, he'd have to have someone who was anti-racism on too, and they'd fight.

The fairness doctrine has long since been repealed though.

This is one of the few times that my communications degree comes in handy.

"The FCC has expanded the four exemptions to the rule so that most free appearances are not covered because they are treated as 'bona fide news interviews,'" Schwartzman said. My understanding is that it's not tit-for-tat Hillary's on the show so Trump has to be on the show. But more-so this network has given Hillary 300 hours so they have to give Trump 300 hours. In reality, I'm sure that NBC (and every other network) has given Trump far more airtime than Hillary.

I could be wrong though.

Like if NBC gave Hillary 30 hours in prime time it would be shady to give Trump 30 hours overnight. This way neither campaign can bitch and whine - they were on the same shows for the same amount of time. If that's what NBC is on, I mean. I dunno - it just makes sense when I think of it this way.

Trump has been a regular guest since The Late Show. Between the apprentice and the Miss America pageant he has given him a reason to make the rounds on the talk show circuit. But we all saw Letterman take a stand after his ridiculous comments. Trump was a regular on his show as well. But he had a back bone and refused to bring him back when he went rogue.

a late night talk show shouldn't give a platform to a person who regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.*

Keep fighting the good fight homie.

There is simply one thing you will never beat...and that's money.

As long as having Trump on TV is bringing money to the network, it is in-fucking-sane to expect the network not to invite him on.

And it's equally in-fucking-sane to expect Fallon of The Roots to lose their jobs over having Trump on. Only thing that will happen is that they'll both be replaced so you're essentially telling Fallon and The Roots not to feed their families because YOU want them to make YOUR point. Why don't you go ahead and quite your job as well and stand with them.

Nowhere did I say it was right or wrong...I'm just telling you what the reality of the situation is.

Not to mention the legal issues of the situation as already explained in this post.

First, "the way things work" hasn't applied to Trump in any way shape or form. From the racist things he's said, to the media letting him get away with it, to him not releasing his taxes, etc.

You can't use "the way things work" to defend someone treating Tump like a normal candidate, when he himself has been un-apologetically not normal.

There are PLENTY of things that could have been handled differently.

NBC could have not booked him, Fallon could have not jerked him off on stage, etc.

Hell they could have even pre-recorded the interview so the Roots wouldn't have to make a tough decision, and maybe Fallon wouldn't have been his usual nervous school girl self.

And then there's the Roots themselves.

Look, the Roots are my hands down favorite hip-hop group of all time but they didn't think this Fallon gig through, apparently.

You can't be a dynamic HIP HOP group that tries to make important statement albums like say Game Theory

AND be the cross-dressing house band for a bafoon.

You just can't.

And by "can't" I mean- you can't expect to not be called on your apparent hypocrisy.

When ?uesto walked back the Bachman thing in such an embarrassing way, I knew things would never be the same.

At first I thought he used his platform to call some sh!t out. More people caught it than he thought, and he WALKED IT BACK.

I mean, cmon.

A group of HIP HOP artists now have nightly boss(es).

This isn't the label just saying "you can't release this"

This is a major network demanding....well, I won't even say it.

And they willfully signed up for it!!

I know, I know "don't hate them getting paid"

FOH

You can't be both. You can't be the group dropping heavy, message albums and be the backup band why a cartoon character runs his fingers through the hair of a RACIST who WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT.

***And lets be real, this post would have went triple plat had the involved artist been anyone from Ye to Drake to even an old board favorite like Common. The involved artist would have been F R I E D.

But, because everyone is under the impression 15 lurks...its a$$ kiss central on here.

And again, I'm not just spewing pure hatred because I LOVE (ED?) the Roots.

But Donald Trump is f*cking evil , dogg. And he is being validated.

I mean, its bad enough he is being validated (or worse- treated softly) by white media from Lauer to Fallon

But to have my favorite Rap Group up there playing some song about a wall so that maybe, just maybe someone on Okayplayer can use it as proof they "stood up"??

Nah dog, they all should have called off sick. F*ck it.

And don't give me that "it's their job"

PLENTY of people throughout history have used their famous jobs as a platform to send a message.

Hell some are doing it RIGHT NOW.

So again, "the way things work" is some bullsh!t. Rules have changed.

The only thing I've said in this post is that Trump = ratings so networks WILL book him.

I'm not saying that they should, I'm not saying that they shouldn't.

But let's not act surprised that he's on the show.

Fallon may have the pull to book someone but he damn sure doesn't have the pull to NOT book someone if the network wants.

As far as the way Fallon acted...that's a different story and I agree, he should've used his platform to roast him.

But he didn't.

This entire situation however is nothing to be mad over. I can't believe some of y'all are acting surprised that Trump was on the show.

Everyone wants to talk tough from their computer screen when y'all ain't doing shit about anything.

I can 100% guarantee that if you are in Fallon's or the Roots' position, y'all would not risk your job because you didn't want Trump on.

Fuck all this, stop treating him like a normal candidate bullshit. Of course he isn't a normal candidate. But the one thing that remains...if you bring ratings and money, networks don't give a fuck about how normal you are.

I wish y'all would be more upset with the way networks have these reality show portraying people.

I legit think Sev is right, which is a sentence I
never thought I'd type.

You should stick to making fantasy OC
tracklists and sh!t. At least in those posts,
you false sense of superiority will have a little
merit.

I don't know who is in charge of late night
Shows but I imagine Falon has a say.

Falon could have said f$ck the ratings.

Falon could have said, "nah I'll do it off stage
and not put my house band through this"

Roots could have said "nah we aren't playing
for this RACIST- we aren't going to pretend
It's ok"

Etc.

In other words, everyone involved could have
taken this as an opportunity to be stand up.

And you don't know me, but yes I have left money
on the table for my values.

My point is maybe the house band should have
done the same.

Or at least thought twice about becoming a house
Band in the first place.

You're over here talking about reality TV- ok,
make a post about that SON.

But this is about the racist running for prez,
and various groups playing their part in
normalizing and even validating this
horse sh!t.

Falon and everyone involved deserves to be
uncomfortable for that public hand job.

And this place should hold the roots to
The same standard as every other artist.

Imagine if lupe had tap danced? Shiiiit.

FOH

Like I said...Fallon most likely has say on pushing for a booking but not on refusing a booking if the network tells him Trump is coming like it or not.

You or anyone else doesn't get to say shot about another man leaving money on the table. That's the problem. How are you going to come in here and tell about 10 grown men to leave their money on the table. That shit is ridiculous. You going to feed them when they do?

Quit?
1: All call in sick for the day?
2: Refuse to play any music?
3: Play a powerful anti-Trump song that would clearly expose him as a fraud and force him to drop out of the race?

#1,#2, and #3 would ONLY hurt The Roots and no one else.

#4 isn't possible because there are no rules for Trump. The Daily Show, John Oliver, Jim Jefferies, Stephen Colbert, Seth Myers, Kieth Olberman, the anti-defamation league , EVERYONE has done it.

Now not doing 1-4 doesn't mean these things are true:

The Roots sold out.
The Roots are cowards.
The Roots support Trump.

If The Roots were in a sketch with him - or let him sit in and play music I'd be more concerned.

But what happen is that The Tonight Shows producers value "buzz" over integrity.

If The Roots did quit (or were fired) then what? You think we'd would somehow be better off? Because they pretty much got fired for Bachman.

>its their job

I'm not sure what's in their contract (and neither are you.)

If they're not required to do it contractually they could refuse. Kaepernick anyone?

Or the writers and producers could have some fucking human decency - that's in the realm of possibility.

The good news here is that everyone knows Trump is a piece of shit - even if they agree with him.

The real disappointment - especially NBC banned Trump from the network, is that he was invited back on this show. And then Jimmy was all "Hey, Mr. Hitler, can I play with your mustache???"

But Dr Evil produces the show and he LOVES this shit. Ford's press secretary was the first in the long line - with Palin being the one that sold more extra commercials than anyone else.

But I'm glad The Roots are on TV a lot - and they aren't actually doing anything to help Trump.

They're just "doing their job."

At Least The Roots Stood Up to Donald Trump on Fallon Last Night

Somebody had to.

You've probably seen by now that Donald Trump was on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night. It was an embarrassing, fawning "interview" from Fallon. It felt like watching a dictator be "fun" on state-run TV. The whole thing was very "Look at Kim Jong-Un not kill that man for touching his hair!" and Fallon seemed more than happy to be a part of it. Now, I know you're no journalist, Jimmy, but is it asking too much for you to not lend your platform to enabling and normalizing a racist demagogue? Thankfully, not everyone involved with The Tonight Show was ready to fellate the melting candle that conned his way to a major party nomination.
When Trump came out, The Roots, who were conspicuously never shown during any of the Trump segments (neither while playing him on nor while playing the show off to commercial) made an inspired choice for his intro song, which you can see at the beginning of this video:

If you can't tell what it is, they're playing Erykah Badu's "20 Feet Tall." The specific lyrics of the section they played:
"Then you, you built a wall
A 20 foot wall, so I couldn't see
But if I get off my knees..."

Huh, that seems like a conspicuously incomplete phrase to me. I wonder how it finishes:
"Then you, you built a wall
A 20 foot wall, so I couldn't see
But if I get off my knees
I might recall I'm 20 feet tall."
Look, could I be reading too much into this? Sure. But one, we know The Roots have used these intro songs to make statements before. And two, on a night where Donald Trump got the most kid gloves treatment imaginable, it doesn't feel like an accident for The Roots to play a song that subtly reminds people both that this is a maniac who wants to build a wall on our southern border, and that if we want to we can overcome his bullshit. All we have to do is stand up.

Donald Trump is the Republican presidential nominee in a reportedly close race. Victory aside, how can his behavior be more normalized than it already is? A non-offensive late-night talk show appearance is a symptom, not a cause, of the normalizing that's already occurred.

we didnt want to belive it and we thought this Trump shit was a joke but its real.

He is going to get face time, some people arent going to press him or hit him with hard questions.

I think the frustration needs to be reserved for real journalist and not comedians who spend 99% of their time telling corny jokes and having corny skits.
