He had a couple of cuts off of "King of Stage." Nothing that made anyone consider him the greatest ever.

Of course, "Don't Be Cruel" was huge. It helped set off the New Jack Swing era.

But no one was really checking for him after that, except for gossip about him & Whitney. "Bobby" had a couple of good songs on it but it sure didn't have a lot of impact.

that period was short, but it was there...and from his NE days up until right be4 "Humpin Around", dude had things on lock, with and always expanding fanbase.....i don't know how folks can argue that... i WILL say that i think all his appeal was probably more a black America thing, cause i'm not sure how he fared overseas, and i never saw anyone older and NOT black hyping him up....

They were only on him for the "Don't Be Cruel" album (and the Ghostbusters joint) but they were big on that cat. He had several songs on top of the pop & R&B charts at the same time. He was an MTV darling.

And.......Usher was more FOCUSED on having a successful career and doing the things to maintain that success

Bobby Brown got immediately sidetracked w/his ascension into stardom w/partying and drugs and just not making his career a priority...

I read that Whitney Houston had to literally beg Babyface to work w/him on his follow-up to don't be cruel because he had burned bridges w/his unprofessionalism...

I remember how noticeably heavy he looked on that self-titled album "Bobby"

Bobby Brown's career ended because right at the peak of his career he seemed to stop giving a f$ck...

Had he remained committed, a la Usher/Beyoncé type committed, then I think we would be talking abt him as an all-time great by now.

I like Bobby...And I think Usher doesn't have an album that's better than Don't be Cruel from top to bottom....But longevity wise, Usher had a much more impressive run than Bobby....Usher survived two different eras. Personally I would take Bobby over Usher on an entertainment level...But judging their overall careers it's not even close...Usher wins that solo battle...

During the late 80s early 90s, there was no one ppl seriously saying that abt...because there were very few highly successful solo R&B *performers* during that time span...

Maybe I'm missing someone...but Bobby Brown was believed to be the next in line sorta speak

I feel like Bobby B was definitely not in the lane of MJJ or Prince and carved his own thing which has become a lane in itself that others have followed.

I actually think there are only four lanes in Male R&B: MJJ (Usher and Timberlake), Prince (Miguel), Bobby Brown (Chris Brown, some Usher) and R Kelly (Trey Songs)

I think Usher went on to fall in MJ's lane, but only because of some of the Neptunes produced stuff....For the most part, I can't say that an album like Confessions is in MJ's lane....That album was a bit more open book, grown ass man cheating on his women, relationship shit to be like Mike...

Bobby Brown's real solo success didn't last long at all - 1988 to 1989/90 (depending upon your local radio station) and 1992-93.

The problem is he basically fell off the face of the earth after 1992, and by the time he resurfaced, he was better known as the abusive husband/drug addict to most people.

I remember one of my co-workers (this was back in 2009) had no idea who Bobby Brown _used_ to be. They knew Whitney, they knew Bobby was her husband, but just assumed he had been one of her backup dancers or something.

The shade is that "Ghostbusters II" was one of this person's favorite movies, and I don't understand how you can watch GBII repeatedly and NOT know who Bobby Brown is.

in the theatre just to see Bobby Brown in a movie. They hyped the mess out of cameo and the song. Dude was running things back then.

i was a Black kid in a Black neighborhood who listened to Black radio and watched enough BET. and i don't remember that Bobby was even IN GBII - which i saw in a theater. of course i recall 'On Our Own' and i have the 12 inch at the crib today (bought it in 1989 b/c 'On Our Own' wasn't on DBC). but i don't recall this cameo. and i don't recall the buzz about GBII having much to do w/Bobby though i recall that video being played in regular rotation on MTV and BET.

i looked it up...now i remember! he was that doorman and i recall him asking for a pack for this brother, as Wikipedia said. yes. i remember this.
