For those later viewings, did you focus on different things.

Say, the 3rd time you didn't pay any attention to the story & subtitles, but just enjoyed the camerawork? Or, you just enjoyed the acting?

I said to myself before watching it a 2nd time, I'm just gonna focus on the camerawork and direction, but I loved the story so much and didn't want to miss out I payed attention to the whole thing again.

Maybe the third time, I'll just focus on the camerawork and editing/pacing...there's so much to enjoy!

The 3rd time I told myself I was going to focus more on some of its technical qualities (which I did a little) but like you I just found myself getting caught up in that story

The first time for me was the most difficult though because there is just SO much to see I didn't want to sacrafice that split second to read the subtitles

Damm I gotta go see this again. Who knows when it will come out on DVD

Every main male character's in all the various stories die in a murphy's law, or in the commmon 'I was almost out of the hood' fashion. The little dark-skinned kid killed all the people in the hotel. The main character is the one in the beginning in the movie(the narrator) and he makes it out of the ghetto by taking pictures of the gangs for a newspaper.

I thought that it was very interesting visually, and I liked it very much.

***SPOILER ALERT***

My only caveat is that, honestly, most of the violence was at something of an emotional distance, which is appropriate, but I couldn't even mourn Benny's death properly.

The only time this film had me by the heart was in the moments in which L'il Ze was teaching the Runts a lesson. Those little kids really got me. And if I had seen more emotions all the way through, I would have been much more satisfied. Not that I had to see everyone as naked and raw as that child, but I would have liked to believe in the love stories. Or I would have liked to have *felt* the slights that turned L'il Dice into L'il Ze, rather than just having to take Rocket's word for it.

And the thing is, this is a fairly minor criticism, and I might not even have thought of it had it not been for the one truly brilliant scene. The rest of the violence I left inside the theatre when the movie was over. That little kid I took home with me and couldn't quite shake for a week.

On the other hand, "Bus 174" which deals with much of the same information, is the most affecting documentary I have ever seen. I hear that it has been picked up by HBO as part of the documentary series that they are sponsoring. See it.

Bus 174 had a cumulative effect that won't leave me alone. I think part of it may be because it is a documentary and it doesn't have a happy ending for anyone -- no one becomes a successful photographer and then goes on to tell their story. Bus 174 is really about bleakness. And it's not pretty, so you can't get caught up in the visuals. And the way that the director builds the story is amazing. Amazing.

Really really really. See it.

If you liked City of God, you'll never forget Bus 174.

Very, very good movie. Damn near great.

I have to see it again...I HATE small fuckin' screens...that one at the Laemmle Fairfax SUCKED.

Li'l Ze was GANGSTA.

The storytelling was fantastic. Never got lost or confused as to what was happening...except when I had to run to the potty. I apparently missed the transition from the 70's to the 80's.

Only problem? A little TOO violent. I'm starting to show my age. Had this been a few years back, I would have been like "Hell Yeah!" to all the shooting and killing and such...

Very stylish yet solid piece of filmmaking. Very snazzy, very Scorcese-esque, technically solid.

Definitely a DVD purchase. I refuse to return to that theatre.

Good lookin' out, Myno and buildingblock.

>I have to see it again...I HATE small fuckin' screens...that
>one at the Laemmle Fairfax SUCKED.

Is the Laemmele that bad? I always pass by it but I've never seen anything there. It's unfortunate you didn't see it at a better spot. I saw it 3 times (which is unheard of for me) at The Grove which is a great theater. I was gonna go yesterday also but I got caught up. Now I'm debating whether or not I want to see it on a little crappy screen

>Only problem? A little TOO violent. I'm starting to show
>my age. Had this been a few years back, I would have been
>like "Hell Yeah!" to all the shooting and killing and
>such...

Yeah it is extremely violent and as Janey touched on in her post, with the exception of that scene involving the runts the violence doesn't seem to have much emotional weight but I really feel that was the point in showing that in Lil Ze and Co.'s world this type of violence (and human life for that matter) really meant very little to them so I really feel most of the violence in this film was necessary to make the viewer feel what it might actually be like to be trapped in this environment. I mean NOBODY who watches this film is thinking "damm It would be cool to live there". Lil Ze and Benny were the kingpins of the neighborhood and all they had were dirtbikes.

Unfortonately as we know, many will just like this film for the "gangsta" aspect of it and for that reason "City Of God" will be looked upon by many in the same light as "Scarface" (An unflattering comparison if you ask me)

>Very stylish yet solid piece of filmmaking. Very snazzy,
>very Scorcese-esque, technically solid.

Visually nothing short of amazing IMO. Bennys farewell scene is worth the price of admission alone

Also the fact that there were virtually no professional actors in this film still blows me away when I think about it

Finally I loved the sucessful use of humor in this film as well (Lil Ze seeing his picture in the paper, Rockets attempt at a life of crime, Bennys new style "I'm a playboy now")

>Good lookin' out, Myno and buildingblock.

No problem. Just sorry you didn't get to catch it on a better screen like it deserves to be seen. I'm sure you saw "Daddy Day Care" on a great screen lol.

that only plays on like 20 screens nationwide? Cause everyone keeps talking about this on this board, but I can't find where it's playing anywhere in Atlanta, and I have one of those little ass "art house" theaters up the street from my house. Someone give me a plot summary or something, everyone keeps saying "Go see it!" but I want to know what the hell it is I am going to see, if I can find somewhere in Atlanta that this is playing...

energy and pacing and "style points"...in that it's like Pulp Fiction witht the different stories as well...Goodfellas, too.

However, where "Pulp Fiction" is "pulp fiction," "City of God" is about life in the slums of Rio at ann "arm's length" exploration. Many people praised it for giving them a view of something they never knew existed.

Sure there is some "Pulp" influence in some scenes but to call it another Pulp Fiction is kind of a misleading description. If anything It's more comparable to "Goodfellas" in terms of storytelling style. And as you mentioned, most people would never know this place ever existed had it not been for this movie

I haven't really seen anything playing there. I hear The "Quiet American" is great though. I've heard mixed things about "The Shape Of Things". City Of God is playing at that theater? I didn't see it on there

SPOILERS
SPOILERS

I absolutely adored this film. It was a very stylishly shot film, but that wasn't the only thing that held up and carried it. The tales were heartbreaking but solid and so was the acting. I was watching a documentary on Brazil and there was a guy from Cidade de Deus who said that after the film came out, it was really hard for people from that favela to find work and stuff because people thought that that was all that went on there and that everyone from there was a drug dealer or gang member. But things calmed down after a while he said. As for Benny's farewell scene, I was heartbroken after that, even though I knew it was coming and was inevitable. Ned's story was also tragic, the fact that he didn't want anyone killed but then found that he had no other choice. For me the scariest part was seeing the smile and the pleasure on Lil Ze's face(while he was still known as Lil Dice) as he went around killing all those people in the beginning and then seeing the runts do exactly the same thing to him and knowing that the vicious cycle would continue.
