"Interracial Sex Scenes"

i'm not convinced that there are directors out there
who can treat interracial sex scenes other than freak shows.
(that said, i might have to rent jungle fever before i can say this with total confidence.)
but in traffic...'ol girl who got turned out by her black drug dealer? man, scenes with them were so awkward and uncomfortable to watch. it just looked like exploitation. like he was the big black crazed mandingo.
there were none in the score, which i thought was interesting...it woulda been nice to see Angela Bassett and Al Pacino get it on...just to see what the chemistry would have been like.
of course, monster's ball definitely did some old craziness...the sex was so raunchy that it was hard to believe they truly loved each other. I understood the desperation, but if i were a black man, i'd want to shoot billy bob after watching the way halle gets nailed in this movie. she's to black men what marilyn monroe was to white men when she was still alive. who the hell said it was okay to fuck her doggy style like an animal on screen?

i can't even think of a movie that has treated interracial relationships/sex scenes respectfully...
if you can, please share...

You have to look at it in the context of the movie. Yes dude went buck wild on her, but she was this prissy little girl from the burbs and he really was this dangerous drug dealing dude who wanted to abuse and humiliate her. It was supposed to be awkward and uncomfortable. Perhaps it would have been different if she was black, but not much different. The important part was that she was this becky who was in over her head dealing with people and things she had no business dealing with and she paid for it.

The extreme interpretation of it is that that scene was supposed to represent the nightmare for white parents: their nice, suburban daughters getting raped by the big black mandingo. Regardless, it was appropriate for the story.

I don't think that's an extreme interpretation, that's what I got out of it when I saw it. It made me uncomfortable the way they framed her christ-like.

Good explanation of it...

She didn't get get raped in the movie, but the white suburban parent's fear is that should would get fucked but the big black mandingo - but there's no way their sweet little daughter would ever do that voluntarily so it must be rape.

they showed them frolicking in bed in the movie but word has it what they shot was MORE racy..but cause they wanted to keep the PG-13 rating (and im sure some studio execs were uneasy with the racial pairings) they left it on the cutting floor. they shoulda kept it.

There was...um...

yeah, I think Brooklyn Babylon was the only one that even comes close, and the rest of the movie was pretty bad, and it was about interracial couples so that kind of disqualifies it huh?

Um...damn. You might have something there.

Actually, it's just the times. I mean, we just got out of the phase where entertainment people get a kick out of poking fun at African Americans being all cool and African American. I think America is still adjusting to the idea of 'integration'...or at least between black and white. Pretty soon it'll be Latino culture that gets shit on. Maybe at least.

I guess all I'm saying is, don't hold your breath.

In the movie Colors Sean Penn and that Latino chick (damn, why can't I remember her name?) had a proper love scene.

Angelina Jolie and Antonio Bandaras has a pretty respectable love scene, or rather lust scene.

I haven't seen Monsters Ball yet, but I have heard nothing but rave reviews about it. Could you have misunderstood the love scene? I misunderstand a lot of stuff about those artsy kind of movies.

Peace,

I just saw Monster's Ball, and I thought that the love scene was done very well. It started off as intense fucking and then it went to passionate love making. It was good.

Othello (1995) with laurence fishburne and irene jacob
Zebrahead (1991) with N'bushe Wright and Michael Rappaport
Mississippi Masala (1990) with Denzel and Sarita Choudhury
Mixing Nia (1998) with Karyn Parsons (i think she had love scenes with Eric Thal {white} and Diego Serrano {latino} in addition to Isaiah Washington (before you scream DAMN SHE A HOE! the film was about a biracial girl who goes on a self discovery type journey and finds herself--as well as three men who fall in love with her---for different reasons)
Nowhere (1997) James Duvall and Rachel True {i think they had a sex scene)

The Incredibly True Adventures Of Two Girls In Love (1995) Nicole Ari Parker {soul food} and Laurel Holloman {boogie nights, committed, zero}

those are few in which interracial love/sex was treated respectfully...i think.

one of the BESt interracial love stories EVER! Fuck Spike Lee and Jungle Fever, when I saw Zebrahead, I knew there werre some nuanced ways to see this historically loaded phenomenon.

On a different note, what was the name of that movie again about Mickey Rourke and Lenny's ex- (damn, I'm spacing on her name) set in New Orleans or something. The sex scene there, although highly problematic with the whole Voodoo black sex goddess thing happening, deserves honorable mention because I heard a rumor that THEY WERE ACTUALLY FUCKING when it was being filmed. *yikes*

in some ways
there was a lot of need between them and a lot of desperation
but the way she just...threw the pussy at him...was pretty shocking.
I didn't think they needed to be in the living room on the couch and then on the the floor. I thought it was interesting that when he performed cunnilingus we didn't see his head...(although I'm sure men enjoyed halle's facial expressions thoroughly...they were definitely...um, yeah. )

there was more love than lust, more aggression than tenderness...and I think the story suggested that they had a genuine need and love for each other, but the sex scenes eclipsed all that by making them seem like they were just two people from different sides of the fence ready to get their freak on...

man, and the food thing tripped me out. what's up with the chocolate ice cream and black coffee, billy? we knew you liked black women already. that's a given. angelina is the closest you can get without crossin' the line...jeez...talk about tacky!

and the movies in #7 are excellent examples (the ones I have seen, anyway).

Then also go see "He Got Game"--on the one hand you've got a pretty normal sex scene with Denzel and _____(the name's escaping me right now, the white model that was in Fifth Element), and a sensual sex scene between Ray Allen and Rosario Dawson. On the other hand you have Ray Allen getting freaky, porno-style, with these two really sexually agressive white girls (who look like they could be real life porno stars). Its an interesting take on white woman / black male sex as a counterpoint to what you see in "traffic".

I know what you're saying, though, nice examples are not seen often enough in big-budget films, and all it takes are one or two ignorant / raunchy ones that will stick out in your head. But I would also say that sex in movies in general is far from normal, outside of what some would deem "chick flicks" there's a lot of weird sex going on between the white folks too--the first examples I think of are "Basic Instinct" and "Crash".

I had no intention of seeing Monster's Ball because it looked ignorant in the trailers. Plus, they cast Puffy.

Followed that same new trend in stereotyping white women as the gentle dove who falls so low that *Gasp* she has to sleep with the evil black man to survive..

It's sad and what's worse is that white people refuse to see this as a trend in racism, they see it as necessary to prove a point...

Sickening...

The Score, they barely showed Angela and De Niro kiss, her role was futile and the first words out her mouth in the movie were something along the lines of "Unless you are going to fuck me"

White America isn't ready to deal with real sex and real love between black and white, all the other races can have thier free love moment but for now, black men and women are still animals to be assaulted or shown as the assaultors

That's why I said yes, go see jungle fever.

But I don't know who came up with this side idea that movies that focus on interracial relationships as the premise or main theme of the movie don't qualify. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be considered along with the rest. The topic is "interracial sex scenes".

all the more reason to include it...Its about interracial relationships, BTW, in one of which sex is a part, but its not like its some porno or something...

Its perfect for this discussion because its a counterpoint to how interracial sex is protrayed in some other films. A counterpoint provided by an African-American director...Just like Mississippi Masala is a good example because it has an interracial sex scene done by a female, Indian director (perhaps Indian-American, I forget where she's originally from).

Original post made the claim "all interracial sex is shown badly" on screen and these two films, along with the other exapmles listed, are evidence of why that is simply not true.

Now if you want to make the argument that interracial sex scenes done by white, male directors are always bad, then I agree Jungle Fever wouldn't qualify. Otherwise, you gotta look at the whole picture if you want to have an honest discussion.

Not to mention the ORIGNAL POST asked (paraphrasing) "can I make this claim if I haven't seen Jungle Fever?" and the answer is simply no...

And that's why I put a 'paraphrase' disclaimer, BTW, cause I knew I wasn't quotin you exactly...

It's all love but I don't see "in the movies I've seen" disclaimer in your original post...If that was implied I certainly didn't get that implication, based on the first paragraph 'specially:

i'm not convinced that there are directors out there
who can treat interracial sex scenes other than freak shows.

Great topic, BTW...

I actually liked that they didn't have a sex scene in "the Score". It didn't really fit the tone of the film. And I think it was nice to see her get respected and not objectified in that way.

I'v heard repeatedly that De Niro has a black wife, BTW. So it also makes me wonder if he had anything to do with her being cast, i.e. was the part written for a black actress? Not to insinuate that Angela couldn't have gotten the part solely on her skills, because we all know she is a phenommenal actress, but you know how Hollywood works...

Oh yeah, and I think in "Cruel Intentions" Sean Patrick Thomas gets it on wiht one of the white girls, but I think they do more of a fondling-and-cutaway thing. And obviously in "Black and White", Power has a little menage in the park with the freaky white chicks, but that movie is based in part on the black sexual myth...But they seem more into each other than they are to him.

It's nice for us black men to talk about what's "good" for black women, but once you accept the fact that you can't control anyone's actions, it's rather liberating to let black women do whatever they want to do!

I think that RedEye summarized my thoughts on Traffic quite nicely.

As for Monster's Ball, I can't see the ignorance or insensitivity in that movie that has been alluded to. MOVIE SPOLIER NOW: I mean, when Billy Bob and Halle get it on at first, they are not yet in love. So it was not a love scene, it was purely a sex scene. And because of the grainy film and dull colors, it gave off a documentary-feel (i.e., Kids).

It was straight lust and desire. It is assumed that Billy Bob's wife is long gone, so he only has sex with that prostitute (whom he and his son both enter doggy-style only). This is what they knew -- doggy-style. It was not meant to be degrading at all (and I don't think it was).

Now had this scene taken place after Billy and Halle had truly fell in love, I could see your point...

She made two dozen or so movies in Spain, not to mention a several large and small american movies before this. If anything, she's the token, all-purpose ethnic - Italian in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Portuguese in Woman on Top.

Her ethnicity certainly doesn't come into play in Vanilla Sky, but it seems like everytime someone's ethnicity is a factor, people start scrutinizing the subtext to death. But when it doesn't come into play, like here or in MIB 2, either they are honorary whites or someone was scared to show a sex scene...or they are just sellouts. Of course, sometimes it is a factor but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

She's saying that, based on the roles she has played, Cruz is an honorary white. But Vanilla Sky is the only movie she's been in that I can think of where her ethnicity wasn't a factor in the story. Yes, they've fudged what that ethnicity was, but she typically doesn't play the generic exotic role. Can you name another movie? Blow, maybe. I don't know much about the movie, but my guess is that she was supposed to be Colombian, based on dude's real wife.

All the Pretty Horses - Mexican
Captain Corelli's Mandolin - Greek
Woman on Top - Brazilian

All of these were english-language productions where her ethnicity (however false) mattered to the movie.

I get what you're saying about the exotic minoroties, but Penelope Cruz is a bad example.

Thandie Newton would be a better example.

this right here? save for MI:2 and the upcoming The Truth About Charlie, and the date rape film she did for the BBC and probably Loaded and Young Americans (i dont think she had a love interest in either of these films), MOST of the work thandie's done her race was obvious and in the forefront. Flirting, Beseiged, Interview with a Vampire, Gridloc'd, etc.... so im not sure if thandie could be a real strong example i can see people using her as an example because to date she's only done two films in which her lov einterest was black (beloved {well danny glover wasnt her lov einterest so to speak but they knocked the boots} and gridloc'd) so who knows...

but penelope...yall most definitely right.

if thats what im saying...probably, but im out of it today. i was more talking about the fact that you were saying Thandie Newton could be used as an example in this when i dont think shes really done enough films to be used as evidence...save for theones ive named, her characters ARE obviously black. actually scratch LOADED and YOUNG AMERICANS off the list (i think her character is black in those films)...but: MI:2 The Leading Man the BBC date rape biopic, and The Truth About Charlie i think THESE are ones in which her race isnt an issue--i wont say she's treated as an exotic, but there is never any VERBAL mention of her being black (obviously, there's a visual mention).

who knows who cares? Thandie can ACT and thats all thatmatters...penelope--well you be the judge.

that was more for morpheme and jvictoria. I know Thandie is a stretch, but she has done more stuff where they don't bother to mention (or at at least don't make a big deal of) her race. Plus, take into account her personal life, and I can see how people could say she is an honorary white. At the very least, I wouldn't expect her to show up in a Spike Lee movie or anything.

Penelope Cruz, aside from Vanilla Sky, I can't think of a movie she did where the character's ethnicity wasn't important to the movie.

If her character in Captain Corelli's Mandolin wasn't Greek, the movie would be over. Who cares if a black person has ever been asked to play a greek person?

It certainly can be argued that Spanish people are not "persons of color" (not my contention) or that Greeks are not ethnics (maybe not Greek-Americans, but certainly Greeks in Greece).

But we're only talking about Penelope Cruz because someone said she was an honorary white because she plays roles where her ethnicity wasn't an issue. And I disagree.

I certainly see the point of the original post. I just think Penelope Cruz and her career is a bad example.

there are few black women in films that can get the honorary white woman title. Whoopi (because SHE is constantly beating on my last nerve playing androgynous, sexually undesirable characters and whenever she's in a dress, she's a buffoon. But white audiences love her like she's one of their chicks.) the light girls...like vanessa williams and michael michelle...they can get the honorary white woman title cuz you can pretty much forget their black unless it comes up in the movie.
basically, thandie is too damn brown. it's not about the person's character as much as what they symbolize (or don't...)

this is what i hate more than anything--just because thandie is married to a white man, black people cant see her as doing "black roles" or whatever....i sometimes feel like she COULD be doing so much more in hollywood--IF folk werent so hung up on her being a biracial black british woman married to a white man...what does that have todowith anything? then again who knows...maybe thandie never thought that doing work with black directors was even an option for her BECAUSE of her being half white, being british, being educated at cambridge, MARRIED to a white man, etc. was in the cards for her...i dont know. iwould never think of her asbeing honorary white, but then iSEE why black folk would. dumbness...

I'm just speculating, guessing who is more likely to be labeled an honorary white. I don't think of her that way, but I could see how others might, moreso than Penelope Cruz, whose accent is so heavy you can never ignore her ethnicity.

But then again, I don't think she wants to be thought of as a "black actress." I have no quotes or anything to back that up, and I don't think she's trying to hide the fact that she's black (as if she could), but looking at her career up to this point, I don't think she is interested in playing roles in which her blackness is important. Can't fault her for that. Being black certainly can hold your career back, she doesn't need to add fuel to that by calling attention to her race. We have to remember, she's mixed AND she's not from America, and so being black can mean something vastly different to her.

i agree thats why i like her somuch she forges ahead doing STRONG roles..nothing wrong with being in "black films"but i think in the roles thandie chooses she at leasts extends the definition of what a black actress can do in cinema. i add Rachel True to that equation also because her entire career (Rachel's) has BEEN playing characters in which her blackness wasnt the main issue (the david chapelle weed movie, CB4 and the Julie Dash MTV movie are examples in which her being black was probably tantamount to the role she had..but that's just me)..and like thandie, she gets that "honorary white" tag also...it dont help mattersthat the way she sounds throws people off. i dont care...theyre both talented actresses that id love to work with someday.

hell id kill to have parts in films in which the characters race wasnt a big issue....or just KILL to have a part.

word...and when Latina women in movies are cast in these psuedo-exotic roles being multi-purpose and what not, they tend to blur the line between being exploited and being an honorary white girl. salma hayek...rosario dawson...& let's not forget jennifer lopez. there are a few actresses who don't fall into this category (rosie perez for one) but overall, it seems to me that this is a common pitfall for latinas, especially in big-budget films.

Of course, sometimes
>it is a factor but

Yeah, but what kind of cigar is it? Who made it? Actresses and characters in movies, overall, aren't just faces on a screen...if it were that simple, a lot of cats in Hollywood wouldn't get paid. If a movie is good enough, it can change someone's life or perspective about themselves...but when the same kinds of roles are assigned and keep popping up it gets a little redundant.

>But there is a difference between
>analyzing subtext and projecting subtext.

right. but when you're watching a movie there's a fine line between the two. I lean towards analyzation, particularly when it comes to films, because i like to pick their plots apart...the writer in me pays particular attention to character because i'm always interested in the full person. hollywood, for the most part, does not lend itself to dimensional roles for latina women (definitely not black women, very often anyway) & that's my bottom line.
projecting subtext would be saying: penelope cruz is the typical spanish flunky in every movie she's been in. they might as well put a maid's uniform on her and hand her a rosary. i'm outraged. i'm leaving the theater. i'm boycotting all movies with penelope cruz in 'em.

analyzing subtext is: interesting how penelope is always in american movies with johnny depp, tom cruise, nick cage...if i didn't know better, if you turned down the volume and checked them out without listening for the hint of an accent, i'd swear she was a ethnically-inspired sexier than life white girl.

that's all i'm saying.

70. "she's ethnic"
In response to Reply # 66

in the American typecasting sense. It's like the difference between an Italian person and a guy of Italian descent. You know?

Roberto Begnini is Italian
Nicolas Cage is of Italian descent.

Nicolas Cage is not ethnic, and was horrible as an Italian in Captain Correlli's Mandolin.

Unfortunately - or fortunately - blacks can't lose their ethnicity, no matter how well they speak. European white - like the Spanish - can. But Penelope Cruz hasn't and probably won't. Because her ethnicity is why she works over here.

The Wesley Snipes flick...Really bad movie, IMO.

But I don't honestly remember any details of the love scenes (with Wesley and the white actress or his Asian wife and the other guy).

Just throwing another flick out there.

Peace,

but that's just Wesley in general. He's usually on some mandingo shit in his sex scenes, not in a particularly negative way, and regardless of the race of the recipient of his sexual energy...He's just FUCKIN.

The sex scene with the white girl was more tame.

I actually liked the movie the first time around, but less the second. Also in another Mike Figgis flick "Time Code" there's a scene with Salma Hayek and a white dude.

I remember her all "yes, no, faster, slower, etc.", but I also remeber her getting it from behind...So yeah she was talking a lot but she was also in a sexually submissive position (and getting FUCKED). He did get her off (I think...I haven't seen it in a while but it was a hot scene).

I meant Wesley getting buck as in "buck wild" as in "passionate". In a lot of his sex scenes he's having enthusiastic, passionate and/or athletic (sometimes even agressive) sex, even when he's not initiating it...the two that popped into my head were "Jungle Fever" and "Mo Betta Blues".

More simply put, Wesley often seems to find a way to get freaky on the screen.

I don't see anything wrong with enjoying your work.

Just 'cause I'm an argumentative bastard, I saw the scene again this weekend...They start off doggystyle and then switch to her on top...

She is definitely verbally in control, though...The scene is focused on her climax not his...So she is dominant, but it does start out with her in a submissive position...

#1 it shouldn't make any difference. a sex scene is a sex scene. As long as it fits within the context of the storyline, it really doesn't matter how raw or wild it is or who the actors are and what race they are. Is anybody complaining about the rauncy sex scenes that Michael Douglas and Glen Close did? Or Michael and Demi? If those two actresses were black then we should be mad? Or are you projecting your own discomfort with interrracial relationships onto the film? (I'm just exploring not accusing)

#2 The words sex and respectable should not share the same space. Sex is allowed to be raw and free of taboo between consenting adults. I truly hope i never have any respectable sex or else i'm giving it up forever.

it shouldn't make a difference, but it does. if billy bob thornton had been pluggin' the shit out of catherine zeta-jones or j. lo or somebody, that would of been a different thing. but the black body is already so oversexualized that directors tend to have a hard time being as neutral with its depiction as they are when it comes to white folks.

As
>long as it fits within
>the context of the storyline,

context is key. did you see monster's ball? the context was kinda ill...

>those two actresses were black

nah, i wouldn't be mad about that. it's not about white on white vs. black on white. i'm saying that there seems to be some awkwardness in films (which i think comes from society as a whole) when it comes to sex, particularly between black people and white people.

>Or are you projecting your

I think there might be something to that, actually.

>#2 The words sex and respectable

Yeah...the only problem i have with that is that when it's all flowery and lovey-dovey and stuff between white folks and all raunchy, exoticized back-breaking sex between interracial couples. (i'm not saying this happens all the time, but i just haven't come across a lot of interracial sex scenes that have treated the intimacy respectfully.)

it is an assumption, i'll give you that. white directors more than black directors, if i had to decide.

I
>mean how do we really
>know whether or not they
>are having this subconcious problem?

again, i think they're a product of american society (can't speak for other societies since i've never lived anywhere else, though i wonder how interracial sex in films is viewed in other countries...how, say, british directors deal with sex, but that's another discussion)and might not think about the subconscious issues they bring to their scenes.

that's true. the black body is exciting, but it is tiring to see it oversexualized all the time. not just in interracial sex but in general...more on that later...

if i implied that, i didn't mean to. i guess i'm trying to figure out if there is a way for interracial sex to be treated as delicately and sensually as same race sex on the screen. there have been some examples here that i need to check out before i can make anymore generalizations.

word, part of it is my personal issue...then i think there is the whole "i am black woman hear me roar" mentality that i bring when i go to movies...i'm not uncomfortable watching it when it's done halfway decently...(mississippi masala, for example) but when it's raunchy, i have issues with that.
the monster's ball scene made me think of a slavemaster raping a slave. that might sound extreme, until you see it.

it can't/won't be done right until we see it more. people aren't comfortable with this so it won't be shown/done comfortably until we become so. same for objectivity.

Whenever a camera is focused on anything, it takes on an importance that otherwise may not exist. In other words, the images that are shown on the screen are chosen for the aesthetic weight and emotional impact that they have and what they can convey to the audience. That is true with _any_ image, not just interracial relationships/sex. In a 120-minute movie, there are only so many images that can be used, so we as the audience are accustomed to finding meaning in each shot.

So in some respects, interracial relationships/sex are going to be used as a symbol for something until the audience as a whole is inured to the concept, which isn't the job of the filmmaker (although art may change societal norms, I don't think it does so quickly or efficiently).

As long as my boyfriend and I turn heads or are looked at askance in any part of mainstream America (or wherever), as we are in all but a few places, interracial relationships/sex on screen are going to have a real charge for the audience.

IMO.

Peace.

97. "RE: Interracial Sex Scenes"
In response to Reply # 0

my two bits:

i think that sex scenes in general are genuinely a dissapointment, but then i treat sex as less about the act and more about what gets you there.

a good sex scene would be one that picks up in the middle, during a moment of complete self awareness for the viewer and the viewed actors. one that doesn't even put into play all that performance and message making that most directors try to insert into the "build up".

its the same reason i hate love movies, interracial or otherwise, because the movies always end with the love. what happens next?

this american life did an interesting "love story" about an interracial couple called "take a negro home tonight."

here is the link to it. http://www.thisamericanlife.com/pages/descriptions/98/105.html

yours, donkey
