"Road To Perdition"

I saw this movie tonight, and I must say it was quite good. I really liked to see it, and Tom Hanks was excellent as I cannot recall when the last time (if ever) that I have seen him be dark. Also, I was quite astonished at the skill of the kid who plays his son, he was excellent. Paul Newman, shit you know he was good, he is Paul Newman. And the guy who played his son was damn creepy ( I cant remember the actors name off the top).
Now the story: OK, I liked it but lets face it, it wasnt try to have all kinds of twists, so if you are one of those people who predict movies all the time, you should be able to peg this one pretty quickly. It makes no bones as to what will happen, but the road to it is quite good. Frankly, I didnt like that they made an actual town in the movie be named "Perdition", it kind of made it seem like they were dumbing it down so people would think it really just meant they were on the road to this town (which they were). If you dont know the meaning go to a dictionary.
Anyways, all in all I really liked this movie and would definitely recommend it.

when you've got tom hanks (best active actor) and paul newman (2nd best active actor) in the same movie, you know it's going to be great, and it was.

pretty good. It kinda dragged a bit, but that's probably cause of my short attention span.

Cinematography was something else; I dug that scene where Tom Hanks pulls out the machine gun and just unloads. And Jude Law is nuts

Very good movie, but I thought it should have been about 15-20 minutes longer. Also don't know if I buy all the comparisons to The Godfather movies. But still...Hanks is great, as usual. Newman is great, as usual. The kid was great. Conrad Hall (cinematography) was fantastic, as usual. The score (Thomas Newman) was amazing. Jude Law was GANGSTA. Again the only knock against it was that I felt it was too short at 2 hours (!). I needed more father/son bonding stuff besides the bank robbery montage (which was funny) and their finishing dinner together. Will definitely see it again, though.

i loved it.

first off, conrad hall's cinematography, to me, made the movie even better than it would have been on its own. the story, the acting, the score, etc, was all there, but the one element that pushed it over the top is the cinematograhy. the darkness that characterized the first half gave way to a lightness in tone, and spirit, which propelled the story during the second half. a lot of the set direction had me and this one guy behind me going 'oh, wow' every few scenes, and, since the movie took place in 1931, all the clothes looked bad-ass as fuck. the long jackets and hats makes for an imposing silhouette.

the movie did drag a bit, but on the whole, it went by at a pretty good clip. everyone acted well, even the little kid, but i felt that the movie belonged to paul newman, even if his role isnt that big.

its good times. best movie i've seen this year (not saying much, really, but i really liked minority report, too)

This is really a Mobster flick for real!!!!!!!

The Irish mob in Rock Island, IL during The Great Depression....

Tom Hanks and Paul Newman......

The only knock is that in the scene where they are entering Chicago, and you see the buildings and City Hall at the end of the street, the "L" train that passes by wasn't around actually until the 1980s.......so much for having historical accuracy!

please. gangs of new york looks pretty iffy. i saw a 20 minute trailer that Scorsese made and i wasnt too impressed. leonardo dicaprio and cameron diaz had absolultely no business being anywhere near that film. daniel day lewis looks spectacular, but he usually is.

that being said, i thought road to perdition was great. i think i had really low expectations though because i sort of thought American Beauty was a fluke. not that it wasnt a great movie, but that Mendes got lucky. i still think that to a certain degree, but now with perdition i realize he knows how to visually tell a story and make it interesting.

was not blown away. It was okay.

I was expecting more of a raw hard hitting storyline. More of a "gangster" flick like Scareface, Untouchables, Goodfelles. Gun play was too important in this film. Cold Slug a mufo!!! There are suppost to be gangsters, Hollywood gangsters.

Young Boy who played Hanks son was impressive. The Father son relationship was okay. But like I said, I was expecting thugs and thug activity...The Wardrobe was cool

Hanks was okay. He's known for his morally upright and respectable characters I could not buy the "bad" character he played in this flick.

I think the fact that they were from a small town and knew most of the folks, all the cliched gangsterism from other films, that usually take place in urban ghettoes, is not really neccesary or common place with Hanks' and Newman's characters.

because I was just going to puke if this entire post was dedicated to saying how great Tom and Paul and Jude and the movie was, because, you're right. . . too damn predictable!!! It had gaps in cinematography that just pissed me off because I wanted this movie to be GOOD damnit and I didn't go looking for 'em, they just jumped out at me. This can't be compared to American Beauty - it doesn't even come close.

I knew Jude's character was coming back except I was trying to figure who he'd be working for since the dynamics had changed significantly. I even knew what the boys last lines were going to be at the end "when people ask me whether Michael Sullivan was a good man . . " or something like that "I just tell them that he was my father." ha! I could've helped write that script.

Micheal jr's performance was lacking - I didn't cry where I should've and i'm the biggest sucka for those scenes that are just supposed to make you cry. Paul did a fine job "God help me", as did the guy who played Rooney his son (very creepy guy), as did Jude - he was nasty. them nails were just GROSS. I must say I was quite disappointed with Tom's performance. There didn't seem to be any depth to him. My favorite part was of him teaching his son how to drive and playing the piano. Now _that_ was moving.

I'm off to rent a movie and console myself.

lol. I don't know what a gap in cinematography is, but what I was trying to say was that there were a couple of scenes (it's not as fresh in my mind now, but this is what I can remember): the scene after they get home to find wife and Peter shot - they're leaving and Sr. is telling Jr. that this isn't their home anymore - Jr. is left standing looking at the house and Sr. jumps into the car, then he turns around and Jr. is in the back seat all ready to go. I dunno but that lapse in coordination jumped out at me. maybe I was just being picky and this is actually an element of editing and cinematography that I am ignorant of, but nonetheless, it's what caught my attention. The other part I think they could have done away with - to maybe preserve the "integrity" (I'm using the term loosely here to refer to what had been built up as the tone of the movie to this point) of Chicago in that period (and the darkness of the movie) - was cut the flying birds from the scene showing the skyscrapers as they arrive Chicago. I mean, it made it look too much like a set - I thought it was overkill and unnecessary; it didn't add anything of value to the scene (for me).

This is all a matter of interpretation of course. I just thought the movie wasn't particularly "masterpiece" quality.

peace,
ak

Except about the "gaps in cinematography", I'm not sure what you're referring to there. But yeah, I thought the script was weak, the kid was bad, and there was really no point. Was it supposed to be asking "is there honor amongst thieves?" Was it supposed to be a father-son thing? Was it supposed to pose questions about being a gangster and going to heaven? Or was it just a half-hearted, well-shot mishmash of all of those? Jude Law and Paul Newman's son were good though, I agree. The ending was predictable, and I felt no emotion at all, I didn't especially care who lived and who died.

Great piece of work. I liked the feel of it. The music is what reminded me of American Beauty, but it really is a good movie.

American Beauty is good, but it doesn't seem as good as I thought a few years after watching it. I wonder if the same will happen with this movie.

Good work. And Jude Law IS good in this.

>Why did they go back to the house?

After Sullivan killed his "father" and "brother" he may have figured that there was no more danger. I don't think he realized Law was still alive and after him, esp. after the shoot out in the hotel room. The beach house was a logical place since they had no other place to go.

>Who DIDN'T know he was going to die while looking out the
>window?

I knew he was going to die when the dog ran out and no one else came.

>Son sees his father nearly dead, with the killer in his
>face, and a gun in his hands.....and still CAN'T shoot?
>errrrr

I was in a similar situation when I was 12 and had a gun in my hand, the gun went off by accident and the bullet went into a wall before I aimed at her but I couldn't shoot again. I realized then that I would never use a gun again. I would never put myself in a situation where I had to use a gun. Little Michael Sullivan must have realized that he was not going to be like his father, that fear and hate would not rule him the way it did the others. The cycle of violence ended with him...it was over.

Also, Sullivan was living a life that would end in hell, or death. Live by the gun die by the gun. Little Michael decided that he would live a different life. He made a choice...his father's sacrifice opened a door to allow him to make that choice.

>the ending makes my nerves hurt the more i think about it.

I loved the ending, esp. how the kid took control of his life and his destiny.

The kid kills Macguire in the graphic novel. He then joins the priesthood, spending the rest of his life trying to atone.

The reason they changed it, I suppose, is because the movie now is all about Sullivan's efforts to save his son's soul, to make it so that Mike Jr can make it to heaven (remember that line?), and they thought having the kid kill someone would have him be tainted -- can't get into heaven after you've killed someone. It's kind of a harder ending to pull off if in a movie.

That's the problem of Jews making movies about Catholics.

I thought the movie was well shot and looked beautiful, but that was about it. Paul newman was weak. I thought the boy didn't do anything that spectacular. Tom Hanks was drier than ever, the the ending with the little happy-go-lucky speech by the boy was corny as hell to me.

Somehow the movie didn't make me feel anything for any of the characters. And the use of 'revenge' as a motive to show your son how good of a father you are just didn't work for me. I don't buy it that it takes this kid to see his dad shoot people, go rob banks with pops and then see him get shot in order to form some sort of bond with him.

the whole theme of the movie to me is about Choices, and the movie doesn't do anything to show you that they made the right one or the wrong one. Sullivan merely made a choice which forced him and his son to live with the consequences. Granted, they blasted your family, but were they really any better off?

And what was up with the Capone references?

What was the point of them robbing banks?

Did sullivan REALLY think paul newman would choose his orphan ass over his real son?

What did Jude Law do in the diner that tipped off sullivan?

.... too many holes and/or shit thrown in for no apparent reason for the film to completely work for me. BUT, it looked pretty.

How did taking Capone's money relate to knitty or Newman's character?

In response to Reply # 30

Nitti was Capone's right hand man in dispensing out hits and maintaining order within Capone's Organization. When Nitti says "We are looking out for our interests" he's saying that in terms of the Chicago Mob that Capone runs. Think of Nitti as the head hit man that delegates work to other hitmen, such as Hanks's character.

Sullivan went ask Nitti to look the other way as he went and did what he had to do?

I thought it was well established there and throughout that Sullivan couldn't kill Rooney's son because the Rooneys were being protected by Capone (for whom Nitti worked). Nitti didn't like Rooney's son (whose name escapes me), but let him live because of the elder Rooney's position within the Capone organization. But younger Rooney was a pain in the ass, and all Nitti needed was a good enough reason to wack him.

That reason was that Sullivan made it economically dangerous for Capone to keep protecting him.

Furthermore, Nitti was protecting the younger Rooney because of the elder Rooney's position within the Capone organization. He wasn't protecting the elder Rooney, though that was implied. It wasn't spoken because no one, not even Sullivan, thought it would come to that. Sullivan loved Rooney, Rooney loved Sullivan. But once Sullivan understood that Rooney wasn't going to give up his son, he had no choice. Then once he killed Rooney, Nitti had no reason to protect the younger Rooney. More than that, he had an incentive to have him killed, because the dude was a prick and Nitti didn't want him inheriting his father's business.

The part that was unclear was that Sullivan's bank robbing exploits didn't work -- he didn't make Nitti give up Rooney. And this was never explicitly said. After the bank robbing didn't work, Sullivan switched to plan B: get proof that young Rooney was ripping his father off. That was in the scene when the bank manager said Capone's representative already withdrew the money. Sullivan asked who it was. And when he said the name, we were supposed to remember that that was the accountant from the earlier scene at Rooney's house, and that he would have the records Sullivan was looking for. But that realization happened off-screen.

Also happening off-screen was fact that Nitti had set that up as a trap for Sullivan, by putting the accountant in an obvious location and then having Maguire (Jude Law) across the street. But I didn't mind that little surprise.

everybody can kill the godfather comparisons, though. not even close.

SPOILERS!!!

the voiceovers at the end of the movie killed it, though. You already knew that Tom Hanks wanted to make sure his son got to heaven, that's what the fucking dialogue with Paul Newman in the church basement was about. Spelling it out with a voice narrative is tacky and overkill.

Furthermore, the ending would have been better if the kid had killed Jude Law. Maybe I just like unhappy endings, but it would have been fitting if Tom Hanks had done so much to prevent his son from being like him, and then he kills somebody anyway.

everything about this movie was 'very well done', i'd say. the cinematography in particular was breathtaking in parts. the acting, top notch for the most part, the pacing, almost perfect, the direction, excellent. i haven't seen such a well-rounded movie in a long time.

for this reason, there's a good chance i may forget it immediately.

i thought jude law's character was extremely underdeveloped, but thats one of very few gripes.
