I feel the same about Bol Bol.
The NBA has not known what to do with this type of player since Ralph Sampson. Sampson was lucky to have Hakeem early on, but the system was still plugging him in as a center/power forward. The Chicago Bulls were frustrated by Brad Sellers, another perimeter player who happened to be 6'11".
Wemby and Bol Bol are clearly wing players, and what they lack in footspeed/vertical jump they make up for in size, so the effect is the same. A step back is a STEP back...a cross over is too far for you to recover, and a first step towards the rim might be the ONLY step they need to get to the rim.
That being said, they need a bodyguard, because the immediate thing I would do if I played them is put them on the block with someone who can physically tax them. Embiid and Jokic immediately come to mind, but it could even be Jared Allen that wears them down. So you need a guy, a 6'9" 250 pound Bam Adebayo type, who can be the hammer who guards those bigs, who mixes it up on the boards and lets Wemby do his thing. That is precisely what Milwaukee did for Giannis, who we can't even fathom ever being bullied now. But the acquisition of Brook Lopez, who before being with the Bucks was considered soft on defense and a non rebounding, score first center. Now he is all NBA defense, and while his rebounding numbers are not anywhere near the top of the league, his presence allowed Giannis to develop into the monster we now see by putting Lopez on the block. If Wemby gets a similar player on the Spurs frontline, he can then get attuned to the speed of the NBA, and then like Giannis, build his physical tools out to prepare him to dominate. This is the formula to him fulfilling his potential. ------------------ One Hundred.
