Ebert always felt like your straight-shooting smart older brother or dad. Kael had the same sense of passion and was a game changer in her own right, but stylistically, she felt more professorial.
Nothing wrong with that, btw, and Ebert rather liked Kael (the "fuck Pauline Kael" guy is clearly someone from the outside world making a quasi-joke, but plenty of critics are up in arms, as if the movie implies Ebert felt that way about her-- which he didn't, at all). Both had clear and strong voices, but Kael did feel more like an expert, whereas Ebert felt like less of an expert and more like a guy who just happened to be smart and know a lot. If that makes sense. Someone you could have a beer with.
