"Gravy Is Coming (Okaysports GD Post - November)"

I'm fucking READY for Thanksgiving, man. Gotta get back in shape but first lemme get all those carbs.

Going to New York next week for 8 nights (work related, but a lot of fun will be had). My wife's going too, and since I'll be working all day - she needs things to do during the day. She's never been to NYC. Any recs that aren't the obvious touristy things? Or what are some of the more touristy things she can skip? I've been, but not for a VERY long time so I might just do the typical stuff too.

Fall weather in California is the shit. Just thought ya'll should know.

Not that the King is limited. I assume He consumes both. But does He consume more of one than the other?

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Or skip turkey altogether if you're a commie. Just go for stuffing, mashed potatoes, rolls, green bean casserole, etc etc.

If you don't like Thanksgiving then WHATS WRONG WITH YOU

Gimme a break, if turkey was so good u wouldn't need all this shit to make it better.

Steak don't need no gravy, turkey is borderline unchewable without it.

Either does rub or any other thing people put on steak

Every steak is just cooked and eaten plain no matter how good the cook is, taste of the meat does not vary by how well it's made.

>Not sure why people try and stick up for Turkey
>
>It's not good, it's ok

and if my family was cool with frying one (something I really only see or eat at football tailgates), I'd imagine that they'd be cool enough to ditch the whole traditional route of TDay foods altogether and we just pick out something people actually enjoy otherwise.

But if I'm with my parents, pops & I are prolly just trying to find any/all dark meat & I'm still seasoning it up.

I don't even really fuck with gravy either, so that makes it that much harder for me.

I've finally in later adulthood gotten us off Christmas turkey, which is just cruel & unusual punishment only a month later (and two weeks after you get done eating turkey soup or sangies), or at least providing an alternative entrée.

In response to Reply # 3

My next door neighbors used to bring it over for Thanksgiving when I was a kid. They were Brazilian. After a couple repeats, this kind of got associated with Thanksgiving to me - more than turkey, which I never really cared for. By the time I was making my own Thanksgiving dinner, we just dropped the turkey entirely.

After that, we go a bit crazy. My wife and a friend, our third co-host, collaborate on a survey to all the invited parties about the menu items. After that, my wife is on pie, I'm on the bulk of the dinner items, and friend is on booze. We hole up in a place on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, get super drunk, and cook for a few days.

It kind of rules.

5. "Hosting Thankgivukkah. Should be epic, and also awkward"
In response to Reply # 0

for the first and only time EVER, thanksgiving and hanukkah overlap. we're combining the two for some awesome alternate recipes and celebrations.

Here's the awkward part.

typically, holidays have always been done with/by my dad's side of the family, because they're the ones who still live in NYC, with the exception of my one cousin on the other side and her husband/kids, who live in Harrison.

So I'm inviting my dad's side of the family, and my cousin and her family from my mom's side.

Plus, I'm inviting my mom....... and her boyfriend.

My parents split up 4 years ago, and my dad's side has seen her since then, and has invited her to family events (my dad lives in Arizona, so he wouldn't be there), but the invite has always just been to her (she doesn't talk about the BF in front of them, so they may not even know about him, but he obviously wouldn't have been invited anyway).

The two of them live together now, so I can't just not invite him. I have absolutely no idea how this is going to play out.

but on the other hand, sweet potato latkes and a turkey brined in manischewitz.....

I feel like I'm in uncharted territory here. This is the first time I can remember in my lifetime that Hanukah has come so early at the same time as Thanksgiving coming so late. Throw in my Mother's birthday the Saturday after Thanksgiving too makes this feel even stranger.

lived in Alabama two Christmas ago & her mother-in-law was toasting to our Christmakauh dinner (while my Catholic father sat there with this 'can't we have this one day?' in-law look on his face at the end of the table).

Fast-forward to two years later & my parents are going (I'm staying West) to visit them a their new house in Portland, ME for Thanksgiving & somehow that's falling on Chanukkah?

Seems like a crazy holiday date swing over a two year period, is Chanukkah now 18 days long instead of 8?

It's kinda hard to explain, but, essentially, the Hebrew/Jewish calendar is based on lunar cycles where the years are essentially 353 to 355 days long. Except every third year, is a leap year, where there's a whole extra month, making the year 385 days long. It's why the holidays are in December every year, but not exactly on the same day. Or something.

40. "it's the opposite of what Muslims do"
In response to Reply # 27

Muslims similarly have a lunar calendar, but they don't have the leap month, which is why Ramadan was in the middle of the summer this year, but 15 years ago it might have been in November. The calendar slips a little bit each year until it makes a full circle back to where it started.

Jews throw in the leap month every few years, I think it's like 5-10 days long. this keeps the holidays in relatively the same place.

In response to Reply # 0

The last 4 or 5 years or so, me and my best friend from my hometown have been running a 10K on Thanksgiving morning down in Belmont Shore in LB before we go off to our usual family activities. Pretty good way to get that appetite extra rolling before stuffing your face (and feeling at least slightly less guilty about it). Running that + usual Thanksgiving lunch at my folks' house = passing out extra hard by the afternoon football game... I haven't actually run that much lately though so I need to get back on my grind there.

I hadn't done the tour guide thing in a while but she was from South Africa and it was her first time in the States so it was fun.

The #1 thing to do in NYC, shape permitting, is to walk. Walk everywhere. Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. Walk from Midtown to the Financial District. Walk all over the East and West Village. Walk Central Park. Walk Brooklyn. Walk Williamsburg. Walk the BK waterfront.

And eat, obviously. For $15-20 entrees you can eat some of the best food of your life.

The Empire State Bldg is still cool after all these years for me but go early, the wait can be long.

The Statue of Liberty tour isn't worth it to me. There are other ferry/boat tours around the harbor and they don't involve waiting in line for hours and hours.

There's hop on hop off buses.

That's off the top of my head.

- The highline as others have mentioned is a great stroll
- There's a great exotic burger place on 16th and 8th
- Great bike trail between the Westside highway and the Hudson River. Goes from Lower Manhattan all the way to Riverside Park (my fav spot in the city) on the Upper West Side (UWS)
- Milano Market at 110th and Broadway....incredible hero sandwiches. If you're a Seinfeld fan, you may recognize a certain diner near there.
- Central Park is always a must walk
- Some people swear by the food on Bleeker st in West Village but I found it all to be a bit overrated (esp Mahmoud's...meat was tough, the spicy sauce is just stupid heat...this coming from an Indian person used to heat)

Will add more as I think of it

I've never actually done it.

and yeah, if you're up for biking, that's the best way to see central park.

There's also a bike path that basically runs for about 100+ blocks down the West side of Manhattan, between the road and the river. It's an amazing and easy ride.

Early evening with the city lit up (this shot is from said walk: http://kayceephoto.tumblr.com/post/18610516519).

And in the middle of the day when it's packed.

I love it any way I see it. Though I'm a big advocate of getting up early on a weekday and walking around the city from Washington Square northward while the city "wakes up."

28. "Shameless plug time: Doing a live podcast today"
In response to Reply # 0

Actually, I've been on it for the past three weeks. This is the fourth episode I've co-hosted. It's called "On the Roof", done by my homie. It streams live every Friday, from like 6 to 7 p.m., Pacific Time. At http://www.alldayplay.fm/.

DISCLAIMER: The site sometimes acts weird for reasons beyond my knowledge or control. There used to be a consistent archive of old episodes for all the different shows, but again, there's been something going with the site and I don't know what's up.

It's definitely different from my own podcast the HedRush (which I haven't been able to do in over a year). First, we mostly play new music. But it's diverse enough, so you'll hear 2 Chainz followed up by Oddisee, and then Devin the Dude, Black Milk, J-Zone and Danny Brown played later on. We have done throwback education shows on The D.O.C. And we'll likely do another theme show next week. Second, it's my homie Tim Diesel's show, and I co-host and contribute in whatever ways I can. So it's a lot less of me bumping my gums, which is a good thing.

So yeah, check it out if you feel so inclined:

started in Meatpacking. went down the Hudson river walk to the WTC area, walked back up to Meatbacking, walked back down toward the Supreme Court buildings. then just walked north all the way to Central Parked, walked all the way thru that up To Harlem.

but yeah, definitely took the A south to Meatpacking again lol.

that was a really cool walk. walking all the way thru Central Park is fun, there's a lot of things you can miss.

i lived there for 4 months. i loved it, but wasnt really for me. cant escape the noise, no nature. NEED MOUNTAINS, GRASS, AND CACTI

In response to Reply # 0

Not sure how this is going to work out.

Little history, dude loves playing racing games. Back in the day we had this game on the SNES called Top Gear. Dude would be up until 2 AM playing. Then when my brother and I got a Playstation, we introduced him to Gran Turismo, and that blew his mind. He was like, "I can make adjustments to my car and then go race it? It has real cars?"

Fast forward to a couple months ago, dude is retired and looking for stuff to do (says my Mom). He calls me and out of the blue, "Are there any good racing games out? What's up with that new XBOX I heard about on the news?" So, he's not ready for a new Xbox, but I found a 360 used for $100. Copped Forza Motorsport 4 from Amazon for $30 and sent both his way.

I'm really curious how he's going to a) adjust to the controller and b) adjust to the amount of things he can do in the game. He's a tech guy, but not so much with video games. He has a nice HD surround setup, so I think he'd appreciate this. The research I've done on the game shows that you can adjust just about everything. So in theory he'll really like it. He's a car guy, how can he not?

Forza is a great racing series and yes you can do any tune-up you can imagine. Hell, once you're done tuning up, you can tune-up your tune-up on test tracks.

Like Gran Turismo it's a simulator, it's as close to real racing you can get. People who aren't patient with this game give up within a week.

In response to Reply # 0

i slacked on plane tickets so looks like i'm driving.

I have private information at the JO that some people are getting laid off next week, but it is generally people that should be let go. First time in my life where i am having to look at it from that side of things. It will be interesting to see the morale this month.

Taking my dad to MNF skins vs 49ers on the 25th. I wanna cop him a jersey because he has never been a jersey guy, skins fans RG3, Almor, Kerrigan or Sackpo which one you think? The first pro game i ever went to was MNF second year at fedex my dad gave my mom her birthday card which had Skins 49ers tickets in the card and a copy of the check for the seats. My dad is notoriously cheap and spent $300 on two tickets. I think i sat there shocked for a little bit and then asked why my mom got to go to see the 49ers and not me. they laughed and said the tickets where for he and i and gave my mom the real present. So this year that we are playing on MNF again at fedex i gave him a card and a copy of the check for tickets for his birthday. I hope we win but i don't care if we lose on Nov 25th because that is gonna be a great game.

For like the 3rd month in a row life is looking up Murf.

I get it- everybody's doing belgian stuff, so now he's got hipster-rage to match his anti-hop crusade. But seriously - a) go to the dudes that were doing Belgo-American so well that Duvel bought them lest they have to compete with them. b) their dubbel, saison and quad are probably among my favorite American offerings of Belgian styles. c) The brewery is literally the most idyllic brewery in the states: http://cache.wanderfly.com/images/user/9f2/i-274224622_f9ce98afdf36535217b8ddcc097a36e5_b.jpg

I just personally don't like belgian for more than 1 beer at a time.

However my concerns stand:

1. Too much of the craft scene is belgian, and too much of restaurant beer lists are devoted to belgian because it's easy for people who don't like beer to drink.

2. Too many belgian beers have high alcohol content.

Ommegang is quality shit, but it's not for me.

I don't put saisons in the same group as I do wit or wheat beers, or that belgian-y yeast flavor.

Also I'm still not clear on what exactly a saison is. They can vary widely in style.

and while Dark Saisons and Rye Saisons are delicious, they're not, in the strictest sense of the word, a saison.

A saison should be a light, effervescent ale with a really nice farmhouse yeast. citrusy if any dominant hop flavor.

And I brew a damn fine one with jasmine green tea.

I don't care what the calendar says, I'm not ready for winter beers. I'm still drinking like it's July, and I kinda don't mind it. Everytime I pass by a new winter lager in the liquor store, my eyes just glaze over.

Anyone else ever have the urge to drink out of season?

Been doing it since I could leave the house by myself. And since it's hotter than balls on a fat man in the summer, I carry 2. but I do sometimes get the "old man/southern gentleman" thing (although I don't think I'm either).

Front left pocket, my phone (Galaxy S3)
Front right, my keys (occasionally a mint)
Back left, handkerchief
Back right, wallet

I HATE having stuff in my pocket...it really bugs me so I always keep it to a minimum. If someone is with me and has a bag/purse, I will always ask them if I can throw my stuff in there. I really hate having stuff in my pockets lol.

If you actually leave it in your back pocket while sitting, the added pressure in that acute area, over the course of time and repititions, can lead to compressing the nerve (most commonly sciatic pain). Really try to take your wallet out while sitting, it's not worth risking any unneccessary nerve pinching.

In response to Reply # 88

Right pocket = wallet, cell phone (usually 2, 1 personal, 1 work)
Left pocket = keys, remote for gate access

I had a moment over the summer

a friend was visiting for a week

so I had massive amounts of Kush on hand

morning...smoke...eat...smoke...beach

on the way to the beach, panic starts to set in because I thought I left my wallet at home

turns out I was so high, I simply put it in the wrong pocket

HAHA!

and I think it is going to succeed. Trying to get a jump on these papers, but with the holidays coming up and my girl trying to get me to go out to Baltimore to see her family, seeing my family here, etc., it's tough.

With college basketball starting today I may have to cut out some sports. I know, cry me a river, but I'm seeing why I talk myself out of getting NBA League pass every year. Just don't have the time.

The pay isn't bad, but your first few years at

and then bounce for a 9-5 in-house gig.

And I hate to say it because I love the idea of the space, and I love that there has been a dedicated spot for the masters of the craft for so long.

I was trying to work with them for a photo shoot back in October (ended up shooting in Williamsburg). I had a few solid ideas that would have been made better by having the scope of 5Pointz to work with.

I reached out to them weekly and then daily to try to get a permit from them to shoot. They didn't get back to me until the morning of my shoot, with some convoluted shit about how "they're trying to protect the artists."

Then, when the first inklings came that someone would be trying to buy the space, they finally started trying to get their landmark status. . . and it didn't seem like that was ever a priority.

I know, I shouldn't be surprised, if their focus is indeed on getting good artists in, but it didn't really seem like they did anything at all to REALLY protect the space.

In LA it's been the best weather, this late into November, that I can remember. It just dipped below 70 (during the day) for the first time on this past Saturday.
