I like the premise of having Rocky as a supporting character here, and I'm good with Michael B. Jordan as Apollo's son.

Looks promising.

The only thing I'm really worried about is the fight choreography - ppl ALWAYS seem to sleep on this in action flicks, but it's SO damned important.

took my son to see it this morning. Let him pick out of this and The Good Dinosaur he wanted to see Creed first. Only reason I was in was because Michael B Jordan. But man this was great. The kid has chops we all know that. He did a great job. But Stallone was really was great. The movie had heart. The boxing scenes were filmed beautifully. One of the early fights is done in one take. Or it looks like one take at least. My favorite moment was when Michael B Jordan was walking out to the ring for the final fight. The camera follows him out of the locker room and into the ring like in The Wrestler in a single shot. But the audio is what does it. The audience is so loud as he walks towards the ring. Then when he is inside the ring and the announcer is doing his bit. You hear the announcers voice echo through the ring just like you were in the ring experiencing the fight with them. Even during the fights you might here Rocky yelling out instructions from the left speakers then as they turn and dance in the ring the next time you hear him he is on the right. Overall a great flick. My son loved it. I loved it.

November 8th, 2005 The greatest night in the history of GD!

Stallone and Michael B are great in their own right and then you combine their chemistry, makes for some great moments. Tessa Thompson is a great compliment as well.

Coogler did his thing on this one...the pacing is tight, the script pays homage while still being corny (as Rocky always is) yet touching, and it's shot extremely well. The tracking shot in the first major fight is awesome, there are some excellent training/montage scenes, a nice throwback to the original running scene from Rocky that's updated, and the entire final fight, from intro to in-ring (and then combined with some great sound editing, especially as you can hear Rock from the corner shout instructions or encouragement here and there) is very well done. The soundtrack combined the infamous Rocky theme with modern tracks and does an excellent job of simmering with the scenes rather than being intrusive.

As a fan of boxing and Rocky, I was already enjoying myself...but then you add in the performances, pacing, and the level of technical excellence, makes for a really good watch. Kudos, I'll definitely be watching this again.

But this was the most fun I've had in the theater this year.

That quick cut to Apollo during the last fight...and Adonis' reaction immediately after...man, I lost it!

I lost it during the bike/4-wheeler scene.

I'll never listen to Hail Mary the same again.

Great camera work in and around the ring, but the sound was even more impressive.

Sly did his thing. MBJ did his thing. Coogler did his THANG.

So much great fan service.

Will probably see it again in a couple of weeks. Absolutely adding it to the collection.

Both films are basically a man facing down the idea of reaching for something higher in life and rising to that occasion.

I like that Coogler understands that idea and made a film that reflects it. Everything that works in Rocky worked here as well. The best films of the franchise all slowed down to focus on the characters moreso than the fight. While I believe there's an even deeper level that this film could've taken given the subject matter, I can't act as if the film didn't succeed at everything it attempted because it absolutely did.

MBJ and Stallone were both great in this movie. I like Stallone's performance a lot because he really carries the past events of the other films into this one well without overselling any of it. You don't have to see any of the previous films to feel Rocky's pain. MBJ pulled off the physicality of his role very well and was great at showing how hungry Adonis is for a father figure moreso than a shot at boxing.

And I like how this film took the cue from the original Rocky by letting Philly play into the film like a character. A lot of films feel like they could've happened anywhere and don't get to add any local flavor to the film as a result.

There's not a clear con to this film at all. I've read some reviews where the critic felt some of the scenes between Adonis and Bianca could've been cut but I have to disagree. This film is structured in a way where it's a sequel and a homage to the original so it makes sense that those scenes would be there since there was a lot time devoted to Rocky and Adrian in the original.

Re: Stallone not overselling. I thought the whole film did a great job of that. There's zero corniness, even in the love story. They didn't go too hard on the needing a father figure thing. They played it all just right. My second favorite film of the series.

Maybe it's because I have one son and one more on the way, but by the end of this shit I was in tears. Like not even stoic tears, I was damn near bawling.

Stallone and Jordan were both outstanding.

Very true to the Rocky series while wisely ignoring a lot of the more embarrassing parts of the franchise.

Although I think it's a great movie on it's own, even if you haven't seen the Rocky movies.

I really hope Michael B. Jordan wins an Oscar one of these days. He's an outstanding actor.

Like others have said, I think this could stand on its own. The only time I felt I needed to review the rocky movies was when Donny asked who won the third fight between Rocky and Apollo. I know Rocky said Apollo won, but I wondered if he was lying to protect Donny's feelings.

The cinematography surrounding Pretty Ricky's intro was outstanding. That was on par with Tyson's intro to Redman.

I like how they ended it too. Having Donny lose seems true to reality.

My other favorite part was when he was when he offered up the keys to his car. He didn't want to wear his head gear the first time, but that second time, had it on without prompting and got clowned by Wood Harris' character. That shit was funny.

Phylicia Rashad was good too. Hell, everybody was good.

It really hit all the notes it needed to hit.
The boxing was better than a lot of boxing movies, but it still wasn't realistic. Ain't nobody taking all those shots to the damn head. And someone who seems to win all his fights in 2 rounds or less, is not likely going 12 rounds with a champ who is 36-0 or whatever.
The timeline was also a little off. Rocky 4 was '85... so Michael B. is 30 years old... which seems really off for the story their telling.
But despite those nitpicks, it was really entertaining, charming, and even touching at points. I don't know if Stallone has ever been better. Michael B. Jordan was great and I hope this turns him into an A-list guy. Tessa Mae Thompson was good too. I hope this catapults her career as well, but I thought a little more could've been done more with her character.

My main takeaway from that scene was that Little Duke didn't want to train Donny because he knew Donny wasn't truly from the streets and assumed that he would never be able to develop the edge needed to be a great boxer.

There's this racial issue that I felt was at play in the scene that I feel many black men can attest to. It's something that Spike Lee touched on in the chicken scene in School Daze. Basically there's this semi-unspoken thing where being from the hood translates as 'being tough'.....more authentically Black.

I kinda wished that Coogler delved into that more because I feel that MBJ's performance draws on that too with his determination to stand tall on his own merit and to be recognized for it.

That is a general thing, not only black. For ex, It applied
to the white kids in 'Goodwill Hunting' too. Poor kids being
tougher than rich kids is one of the oldest cliches in the
world. If it manifest in more black communities it's because
there are more poor black people (by %) and fewer wealthy
black people (by %) than white, and by a whole lot, which is
just basic math playing out

No, that would have been terrible, overdone filmmaking.
Over-stated is underrated. You don't have to explain
every dynamic explicitly. Everyone with a brain in their
head understood that dynamic just fine.

Most fighters have no choice...they have nothing and boxing is their only way out of poverty. He's an educated kid with options...in their minds he doesn't need to fight which is why they don't want to train him (both Wood Harris and Rocky initially). It's not a race thing. You gotta have that chip on your shoulder to box...it has to be life or death for you to do what it takes.

that instrumental that was playing when Bianca met Donny? NIGGA!!! I was in the theater making the doo doo face...just copped the soundtrack but I'm not sure its on there.

There was another joint that seemed part of the score of the film that I really liked that I'm sure won't be on the soundtrack either.

That being said...very well executed and true to the OG Rocky franchise.

Sly did a real good job of embodying the things that we loved about Rocky in the 1st movie. MBJ did a good job of making Donnie very likeable in his own right.

I particularly liked the scene where Rocky was looking at Donnie hurting...and you can kind of see he was thinking about how he handled it when Mick came knocking on his door that 1st time. They did an excellent job of showing how time had given him wisdom and perspective.

I liked Tessa Thompson's Bianca....but she wasn't no Adrian. I guess that's unfair...and her scenes with MBJ were solid....but Sly playing off Talia Shire was some REAL shit. This just felt nice but I can see how critics are riding on their chemistry considering how central Rocky's love for Adrian was in the OG.

That being said...I'm going to see this shit at least once more in the theaters.

http://variety.com/2015/film/in-contention/yes-that-dazzling-boxing-sequence-in-creed-really-was-one-shot-1201650969/

Extended single takes — or “oners,” as they’re often called — are fairly popular as of late. An exciting sequence in an episode from the first season of “True Detective” had people buzzing in early 2014. Last year’s best picture Oscar winner, “Birdman,” was photographed and edited to appear like one shot, while the year before, “Gravity” dazzled with its CG-assisted single takes. (Emmanuel Lubezki won the best cinematography Oscar for both.)

And this hasn’t been limited to American cinema, of course. Sebastian Schipper’s “Victoria” took things a step farther than “Birdman” by actually capturing the entirety of the film in one uninterrupted, unassisted take, while László Nemes’ Cannes prize winner “Son of Saul” tells a harrowing Holocaust story with a series of extended takes, unique in that they are all focused on the face of actor Géza Röhrig.

If you saw “Creed” over the weekend, you witnessed another example as an entire two-round boxing match is captured in one exciting take. Shockingly, given the editorial tools at the disposal of filmmakers today, there was no post-production stitching employed to connect a series of takes together and provide the effect of a single shot. “Everybody thinks we’re cheating, but that is one shot,” cinematographer Maryse Alberti says.

SEE MORE:Cinematographer Maryse Alberti on Distinguishing ‘Creed’ in the Footsteps of ‘Rocky’

The 25-year veteran might not have been the most obvious choice for Ryan Coogler’s “Rocky” spin-off, but in films like “The Wrestler,” she has shown a propensity for the kind of realism the 29-year-old filmmaker was after. That realism comes to a head in this riveting sequence.

“A movie like ‘Raging Bull’ is gorgeous, but it’s not what we wanted to do,” Alberti says. “Ryan very much wanted to stay in the realm of reality and seeing the boxer alone in the ring. Once you’re in the ring, you don’t have teammates. You are alone. There’s no one to lean on. That was kind of the idea.”

Alberti, who shot the film digitally on the Arri Alexa camera, is quick to credit her steadicam operator, Ben Semanoff. He was tasked with physically pulling off the feat in the ring, moving from actor to actor as the intense choreography (courtesy of fight and stunt coordinator Clayton Barber) tells a story that builds to a breathtaking punctuation. Coogler shot 12 takes of the sequence, with the tenth take being the one used in the film.

Lighting, meanwhile, wasn’t a major concern given the environment. “Once you’ve lit a ring — and I’ve learned how to light a ring from John Duncan, who has a lot of experience in lighting live boxing events and did the lighting of the ring for us — it’s lit everywhere, evenly, if it’s well done,” Alberti says. “One of my concerns was that we’d be truly able to get close to the boxers without shadows … I was trying to always bring the camera back to the drama and the intensity of the face.”

There are actually a number of extended shots in the film, which Alberti says helps penetrate the inherent manipulation of filmmaking. And that, she surmises, is what you can achieve with a well-intended, well-executed oner.

“With one take, I think you don’t need to rely on movie editing to dictate emotion,” she says. “When it’s well done, when it’s not virtuosity, when it’s not too self-aware, it’s powerful. Sometimes the virtuosity of one take can take away from the richness, but in ‘Creed,’ you are in the ring with this boxer and I think it’s emotionally powerful.”

I grew up watching the Rocky films and am a huge Stallone fan, this was really great.

Some things I really liked:
-Stallone was fantastic, and could end up grabbing some nominations for this one.

-For that matter, Michael B. Jordan pretty much saved his career that could have tanked if this was bad following Fantastic Four.

-When Adonis was coming into Philadelphia and The Roots came on the radio, I was stunned how great that was. It was as if Ryan Coogler had read my mind when making this film. Perfect.

-That long take boxing match was simply astounding.

-All of the boxing was pretty cool. Unfortunately, rewatching the first 5 movies, without the nostalgia, the boxing does look fake. At least with Rocky Balboa and this one, it looks legit.

-Speaking of legit, the use of HBO and ESPN was very cool with this too, making it all seem more realistic.

Can't say enough good about this, and honestly, I hope they continue with these movies like they did with the Rocky ones (i.e. releasing Creed II, Creed III, etc.)

I only know of the two spotty movies he's done (FF and that comedy with the buddies)...doesn't seem like enough to merit people saying his career was ever in danger.... I will say this...this movie is the biggest to feature him and he TOTALLY delivers, which he's done in even the not great movies like Red Tails and FF

YES...my head was nodding like a mofo...it's like he basically knew that Philly energy The Roots would bring and it was a great decision to bring us into Donnie's new world and the feel of the city...

And that was only until the main event. In that fight they went back to the old Rocky style where EVERY punch lands and with power. That's actually one criticism I have of the movie.

strip away the rocky aura and the amazing fight scenes and you still have an amazing movie about the relationship formed between Rocky and Adonis, and like many have said, it never felt forced or corny

Also, (SPOILERS)

I'm glad they did not kill Rocky, in the wrong hands they could have went for those cheap tears but they kept everything so perfect, up to having him adonis almost win, but ultimately lose

the soundtrack was fantastic (use of the roots when he gets to philly especially) but 3 other moments stuck out to me. 1. a whole generation of kids may look at hail mary differently, that entrance was too perfect. 2. during the bike scene, jhene aiko is like humming the rocky theme, that shit was fire and 3. the tessa songs were jammin so well done

keep seeing people push for nom's for stallone, mjb and cinematography, but damn, coogler killed it. I thought the fight scenes were fantastic, the voices coming from the corner, the all dark background round, the entrances, the way adonis gasps for that breath when we see apollo, loved it

oh, and pretty ricky did the damn thing, accent was perfect for a bad guy

Mary Anne Creed looking at the boy, conflicted, because of
the circumstances of his conception and because she saw her
husband in him, all at once.

Mary Anne Creed being the bigger person, and the hero of the
whole movie.

Rocky Balboa reaching up and grabbing a chair that he hides
in a tree near the tombs of Adrian and Paulie, and uses
to visit their grave site on their birthdays.

Adonis swallowing his pride, and watching the footwork and
punching form of his younger gym-mate.

Bianca removing her hearing-aid out and walking away in that
through-the-door argument scene with Adonis.

Adonis helping her twist her hair in a cuddling scene.

Rocky leaving Paulie's bedroom mostly unchanged since he died.

Rocky having soul food at his house for the first time ever.

Adonis working out in the hospital.

Everything about "Pretty" Ricky.

The shorts scene.

The camera's nervous pace during the final fight.

The suspense when Adonis was asked to count the # of fingers,
one eye almost closed

The recovery.

The reconciliation with his deceased father.

This motherfucking movie, man.

I took that scene as Rocky visiting every morning. That is why the chair is there. They know he will be back in the morning.

I forget which critic pointed this out, but in a worse movie, that earpiece "pays off" at the end in the plot, with some moment in the story that requires her to not hear something at a key point, or something similar.

Instead, it's character. Sure, there's the symbolic parallel between her future and his, but Coogler doesn't ever spell it out for us as if we're dumb, nor does he try to tie it into a story beat in a corny way. It simply exists. The way that character traits do in real life.

Terrific storytelling. Trusting the audience. Building the characters. Letting them breathe.

He's such a natural filmmaker, man. He's going to continue to make great films.

This scene created a visceral and audible reaction from the sistas in the audience when I went to see it. No lie that shit made me miss my ex. It was so simple and subtle. in other directors hands that shit comes off corny or overly "cutesy"... what am I saying, most directors don't know to add that fucn scene in a (Black) movie.

may I also add the scene of young dude on the bike saying you Creed's son, right after Adonis gets out of jail and Coogler lets a Lil' tension set in and then bam "yeah" and kid just mashes out on the bike

I also like the shot of Adonis' last run with all the dudes on the bikes and atvs

i agree with you and Rob above, i can handle a little cheesiness but then scene did go a little long at the end there. also, i remember thinking in the theater that MBJ only has one way of showing excitement and kind of laughed about that. had me thinking back to some scenes from FNL.

I'm not even a bike dude and hate to see those little fuckers riding on the streets, but that scene had me so damn hype

In response to Reply # 69

Cheesy means you didn't think the emotion in it was authentic. Even if it was flagrantly cinematic and not rooted in naturalism, the emotion is unflinchingly sincere. The whole movie is so remarkably sincere, even when events and emotions are heightened from where they'd be in a more realistic depiction.

I think people conflate cheesy and earnest too often. I'm told far too often, both in life and on this board, that movie scenes involving an unironic embrace of sincere emotion are "cheesy." Sign me up for cheesy then, cuz I fucking loved it.

As mentioned, just about every beat the movie needed to hit, it hit right out the park. The cinematography was excellent, the pacing was great, the acting was on point from everybody (Stallone and MBJ played off each other extremely well), the sound editing and score were top notch. As mentioned, Hail Marry takes on a whole new life. I do like how they only have snippets of the Bill Conti score here and there. But by time 'Going The Distance' hits everybody in the theatre was hype as all get out.

Go see this movie. It deserves to win

That is a beautiful film. I'm in absolute awe. Three or four times I felt the eyes well up. The shorts. Gawd. The mistake line, yo. That shit felt like a punch in the stomach. And that into the Rocky Theme? Get the fuck out of here. And then a broken Rocky returning to the top of the art museum steps one last time? Fuuuuuuuuuck.

And big ups to Ludwig. That fucking score was NASTY. Soundtrack was ill too. Man, when he first gets to Philly and "The Fire" starts? Cot damn.... I love my city, man.

That film IS Adonis. It's not just a sequel in name. It's earned and surpassed it's place in the series. I-II-BALBOA-CREED is a fucking beast of a saga (I love 3 & 4 too, but they're just on a different level).

The shit that gets everybody hype in the movie is Going The Distance (and it has the illest horn movements. You have to listen to the two movements play in the left and right speaker. Bill Conti was a BEAST):

First time was with Rocky telling Donny that he'd give everything up just for another day with Adrian. Second time was in the ring before the big match, where Rocky tells Donny that he loves him and he's family.

And the thing is, I've never been a huge Rocky film fan like that, but this shit got to me. And was absolutely excellent. Better than I thought was possible. And more heart than any movie I've seen in a while.

Great film.

In response to Reply # 98

That SAG Best Ensemble nomination is always great for a film's Oscar buzz. And I *really* doubt the Academy has it in them (in a really good year, imo) to nominate *two* black movies. I'd be surprised.

Many movies get a "we'll acknowledge the film through nominating a single stand-out performance" treatment. This is one of them. Sly, politically, has a really good chance to win-- action movie star revitalizing his career, giving his best performance in ages, sentimental, old man, etc.

As far as picture? I'd say, outside of Spotlight and Carol, I wouldn't say anything is a surefire lock for a Best Pic nom, so anything *could* happen-- but I'd bet today on The Revenant, Room, Brooklyn, and The Big Short all getting nominations, Mad Max: Fury Road after that, and The Martian, Bridge of Spies, Straight Outta Compton, Inside Out, and *maybe* Steve Jobs in the tier after that. I'd put Creed, in terms of likelihood, sadly behind all of these-- even though I liked it more than all but three or four of these.

Same for actor-- you have to consider the politics even more for that. They like nominating stars, people who've earned their position in their mind, people with some serious cred and/or showy roles. Leo and Eddie have the showy roles, and everyone else has been established for years-- Will, Cranston, Fassbender, Depp, or maybe guys like Caine or McKellen. Young men very rarely get nominations unless it's a super-showy role, and they didn't really cyse MBJ getting punched in the face for real enough to make people go "oooh he's so method, he's so brave" often enough to make him a consensus contender. I think he'd be more likely to slip in than the movie, and I'd looooooove for it to happen-- but again, I'm insanely skeptical.

Again, the numbers don't like-- the Academy is overwhelmingly old, overwhelmingly male, overwhelmingly white. The Academy giving the "acknowledgement" nomination to Creed through the old white man makes *perfect* sense.

The acting was good for the most part too. I think the tear jerk moments you guys kind of overblown so when i saw the movie i was like meh. The one scene where most of you cried was far from being a Fresh Prince "Why don't he want me?!?" me scene. It was good. Just wasn't amazing. Michael B Jordan was amazing otherwise. I believed him in that role.

The only real problem I have with the movie is ...well its really fucking stupid that this kid got a title shot after 1 fight LOL. Dude had 1 fight and went to HBO. NOT to mention this kid was self taught and after a few weeks was ready to have his first fight. Now in the next one (if they do it) we are supposed to believe he's more of a seasoned fighter. I kind of with there was more of a natural buildup and that his biggest fight was something more realistic.

If this movie wasnt part of the Rocky series and he wasn't playing Apollo's son I would put this on par with Southpaw. Those things make this movie more fun and brought me back to my childhood.

To Creed:
Creed had 15 fights, was not entirely self taught, and had tons
of natural ability, so there's that

But the main point is this:
Pretty Ricky was getting ready to hit the pen,
and so the fight was really just a cash grab publicity stunt
for the champion to say goodbye to his British fans

In those circumstances, great fighters pick tin cans all the
time. Apollo was a tin can with a NAME that could generate
some PPV purchases, get some last minute freedom

It's no less silly than Apollo Creed picking Rocky Balboa in
the original Rocky

The movie did a decent job at clearing that up, as there is no way that would have happened otherwise. The world just finds out Apollo has a son, and the champ just fucked up his last legitimate money fight, so this was at best a publicity stunt to make some cake before he went to the pen. Convenient to the plot, yes, but it worked, so I wasn't mad. As was mentioned, echoes of the original Rocky yet again.

he wasn't 1 fight in but he had accomplished nothing...just a club fighter who gets beat down for scraps. he had as much a chance at a title fight as Adonis did. they're just revisiting the theme of a nobody getting a title shot because he's known as a sure thing and going the distance...the difference here is that Adonis was marketable due to his last name and they actually created a circumstance where the Champ needed to fight someone right away and he happened to pop up out of the blue. It makes way more sense than Apollo randomly picking the bum south paw from Philly.

As far as tear jerker moments I didn't get teary eyed from sadness...i got teary eyed during the damn dirt bike run cause it made me feel the way the old Rocky movies made me feel. that was a nostalgia moment. they made it their own while capturing that old feeling. I rewound it and watched it again and still got the same feeling. That shit got to me.

The framing is incredible in the first one, and the sound is immaculate in the second. A co-worker of mine who boxes (amateur, and in his spare time, but he spars a lot) said he'd never felt more like he was in a professional boxing ring than he had during that climactic fight.

Never got around to seeing in the theaters, ordered the Blu Ray just off the strength of MBJ, Coogler and the critical acclaim.

MONEY WELL SPENT.

Every bit as good as the original Rocky. Stallone acted his ass off, MBJ acted his ass off, Tessa Thompson acquitted herself exceedingly well. Everything about the movie: the tone, the pacing, the humor, the way it's shot, the heart was off the meter.

Loved it. Glad I added it to the collection.
